On September 8, I attended a rally at Old City Hall to draw attention to Climate Change. Candidates running for both City Council and School Trustee were there along with more than 250 concerned citizens who showed their support for the rally. GUELPH TODAY and the Tribune did a terrific job covering this event. Their pictures showed the diversity and age range of all who attended. The Rally was organized by “RISE for REAL Climate Action”. Those of us who signed a pledge to protect and preserve Mother Earth for all generations to come carried signs, and under the talented leadership of James Gordon (a great friend and Member of the GWSA), we sang the chorus to one of his songs. We belted out “we must get off, we must get off, we must get off of fossil fuels”. We actually said OIL. September 8 was a world wide event. More than 900 rallies took place around the world from Fiji to Paris, Lisbon, Bogota, San Francisco. In total, it was across 7 continents. The support is growing to protect our wonderful earth. If you want more information on this topic, or if you want to meet and chat about it, please contact me. My card is at the front counter. My Updates from September and more exciting dates to look forward to in October, November and December: 1. Volunteer Appreciation Event, September 13 This year the Volunteer Advisory Committee, chaired by Becky MacDonald, City of Guelph staff member, organized a NEW venue to recognize the Volunteers associated with the GWSA and other City programs. This luncheon was quite different from the traditional evening Gala dinner that has been an annual event for more than 15 years. It is always good to try different approaches to anything we have been doing the same way for many years. After a new approach is tried, it’s important everyone has an opportunity to evaluate the pluses and minuses of the changes. Please ask at the front counter for an evaluation sheet and let us know your thoughts and suggestions regarding the NEW Volunteer Appreciation Event. This input will assist us in planning for next year. 2. Advance Municipal Voting Polls: October 12, 13, 14 Evergreen Seniors Centre. Please get out and VOTE. Vote Day October 22. For more information go to: GUELPH VOTES 3. The Day Before: November 9 at 2 p.m. The GWSA Silvertones will be providing a wonderful Tribute again (Continued on page 4) NOTE: Disclaimer—The Sentinel and the GWSA do not necessarily agree with or support statements in the Sentinel made by advertisers, or submissions by writers.
