Use Lentils To
Beat High Blood
Pressure
The humble lentil is a wonder ingredient used
to add protein and texture to a whole host of
dishes from curries to soups and stews. And
now the lentil has been recognised for its role in
helping keep blood pressure in check. An animal
trial has found that lentils could provide
a useful tool in keeping blood
pressure at safe levels. Of course,
anyone worried about their own
blood pressure should speak
to their own doctor and should
continue taking prescribed
medication unless
instructed otherwise by
a medical professional.
Music Improves
Relationship With
Kids
If you're a parent whose teenagers spend family
road trips with ear buds firmly in place, you may
want to encourage them to unplug, then turn
the car radio to something the whole family can
enjoy. It just might do wonders for your future
relationship with your son or daughter, according
to a new study from the University of Arizona.
Researchers have found that young men and
women who shared musical experiences with
their parents during
childhood, and especially
during adolescence,
report having better
relationships with their
moms and dads as they
enter young adulthood.
The research is published
in the ‘Journal of Family
Communication.’
Have You
Washed Your
Hands, Doctor?
When it comes to the examination
room at your health care clinic, you
might think that avoiding infections is
out of your hands. But experts at The
University of Texas Health Science
Center at Houston reveal how all of us
can help make a difference in infection
control. Hand hygiene, hailed as the
cornerstone of infection prevention,
is an issue prone to inconsistency
and lack of oversight but cleaning,
sterilisation, and high-level disinfection
is a must. Says senior author Dr Luis
Ostrosky, patients can
do their own part to hold
healthcare practitioners
accountable. “Our mantra
is ‘It's ok to ask’ – ask
your doctor or nurse if
they washed their hands
and if the instrument
they are using on you is
sterilised. People need to
be their own advocates."
Moonlighting
Bad For Family
Contrary to the belief that people who
hold two jobs, or moonlight, are not
as dedicated to their secondary job as
single job holders, research published
in Springer's ‘Journal of Business
and Psychology’ has found that dual
jobholders are equally committed as
an employee of both establishments in
terms of performance. However, says
the study led by Brian Webster of Ball
State University in the US, having two
jobs may contribute to higher levels
of work-family conflict, especially due
to the time that dual jobholders spend
away from their homes. Says Webster,
“Although dual jobholders don’t appear
to be hurting the organisations in which
they work, they may instead be hurting
their lives outside of work.” Researchers
urge that instead of discouraging
moonlighting, organisations enact
policies that help dual jobholders strike
a healthy balance between work life and
home life.
