Lotus For
Mind, Body
& Spirit
Lotus flower and its leaves have
a great spiritual symbolism in
many cultures, including the
Hindu and Buddhist spiritual
thought. However, lotus is also
a contributor to our physical
wellbeing. Lotus flowers are
known to block the absorption
of fats and thus help lower
cholesterol. Lotus flower tea
is soothing and helps alleviate
anxiety. Lotus root with its high
insoluble fibre content can keep
hunger at bay for hours. It is also
very low in sugar, which helps
keep insulin levels low and allows
fat oxidation to occur more often.
Vitamin C is the most abundant
in the lotus plant. It is a powerful
antioxidant to neutralise harmful
radicals and involved in the
production of collagen needed for
strengthening the organs, skin
and blood vessels. It contains
Vitamin A, which improves the
health of hair, eyes, and skin.
It can also prevent macular
degeneration, assist in healing the
wounds at a fast pace, and reduce
inflammation.
Frequent Saunas
Reduce Risk Of
Stroke
According to a new study, the first of its kind, from the
University of Eastern Finland and published in the journal
‘Neurology’, frequent sauna bathing is associated with
a reduced risk of stroke. In a 15-year follow-up study,
researchers found that people taking a sauna four to
seven times a week were
61% less likely to suffer a
stroke than those taking
a sauna once a week.
The researchers feel that
sauna bathing led to a
reduction in blood pressure,
stimulation of immune
system, a positive impact
on the autonomic nervous
system, and an improved
cardiovascular function. The
benefits were similar in both
men and women.
Mindfulness Benefits
Teamwork
If you think mindfulness is a solitary activity, think again.
New research from the UBC Sauder School of Business
suggests that team mindfulness would reduce or even
prevent conflicts. Team mindfulness refers to a shared
belief within a team of focusing on the present moment
and ensuring members interact with one another without
judgment. Says lead author Lingtao Yu, “Given that more
companies are employing a team-based organisational
structure, where team interactions are critical and
stress levels are high, we hope to design an evidencebased
team mindfulness program that organisations
can offer. We believe teams may benefit from doing
meditation or yoga together, and setting aside time to
share experiences so that team as a whole becomes more
mindful.” The study was published in the ‘Academy of
Management Journal’.
