scientific 54 wellness Brain Stimulation Reduces Suicidal Thinking In Chronic Depression A specific kind of brain stimulation, called bilateral repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), has been found to be effective in reducing suicidal thinking in a significant portion of people with hardto-treat depression, according to a study published in ‘The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry’. A non-invasive form of brain stimulation, rTMS directs magnetic pulses at a targeted area of the brain. While left unilateral rTMS is the most common type, the findings suggest that targeting the right frontal lobe may be key to treating suicidal thinking, says first author Dr Cory Weissman. The promising findings give hope to people suffering from other mental illnesses like post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. It's estimated that about 90% who die by suicide have a mental illness. Noise Worsens Vascular Disease With an increasing level of noise, the incidence of atrial fibrillation also increases dramatically, says a new study published in the ‘International Journal of Cardiology Scientists’. Scientists from the Department of Cardiology at the Mainz University Medical Center have found that the incidence of atrial fibrillation in subjects with extreme noise annoyance reactions increases to 23%, compared to just 15% without this environmental impact. In extreme noise pollution, aircraft noise comes first with 84% during the day and 69% during sleep. Says study leader Omar Hahad, “The study shows, for the first time, that noise annoyance caused by various noise sources during the day and night is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Overall, we have been able to demonstrate a stronger influence of annoyance caused by nocturnal noise on the heart rhythm.” New 'Stability Protein' For Cancer Treatment Researchers from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, have characterised a new protein called ZUFSP, which is important to the genetic stability of our cells. All our cells contain genetic material, DNA, which controls the activity of the cells. If the genetic material is damaged, cancer cells may develop. Therefore, many proteins and enzymes are responsible for stabilising and protecting our DNA against permanent damage and mutations.
