fashion happy shopper... We’ve all done it. Excitedly ordered an item of clothing online, only for it to arrive looking far from how it appeared on the website. Today, shopping is so easily done at just the click of a single button, but when it comes to your wedding dress, we think that significant time should be spent in store rather than opting for a quick online solution. A wedding dress is one of the most sentimental – not to mention expensive – garments of clothing that we’ll likely ever purchase, so shopping for it should be an experience that’s as special and unique as the dress itself. Here in New Zealand we’re spoilt for choice, with boutiques showcasing some of the most beautiful rails of wedding dresses that we’ve ever seen. Call us old fashioned, but we don’t think your wedding dress should arrive in the post – delivered by someone who has no idea what precious cargo they possess. So, gather your bridesmaids and enjoy every single second of sifting through the rails, sipping champagne, trying on options, sipping even more champagne, and ultimately, picking a dress that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. We know what you’re thinking… you’ll head to the bridal shops to try on some dresses, only to order the exact same one online at a later date, at a fraction of the price. But, before doing so, you may wish to carefully consider the costs that will occur further down the line, after you click to make that seemingly obvious, initial purchase. Additional costs, such as, but not exclusive to, delivery and alterations are certainly bound to occur and, more often than not, once these extra costs are applied, you’ll wonder why you didn’t pick a more personal, supportive and overall, more cost-effective shopping experience. However, let’s say you fall in love with a dress online that you’ve dreamt of your whole life. A whopping majority of wedding boutiques will endeavour to order it in, just for you. So, you can pick from a wider online range, whilst ultimately benefitting from the aftercare that comes only when you shop with a physical bridal store. If we haven’t managed to persuade you just yet, let’s consider the additional risks that occur when you say ‘I do’ to buying a wedding dress online. • A high percentage of online retailers won’t entertain the idea of refunds, or even exchanges. • When you buy online, your dress is unlikely to fit as well as a shop-fitted one would. • If you don’t order far enough in advance, your dress may not even arrive in time for the big day. • Most likely, it may arrive with the fit, colour and overall style differentiating somewhat from how it appeared online. So, consider buying in store and benefitting from on-site professionals who are on hand with endless advice and recommendations. After all, it seems crazy to think you would ever risk paying so much money for a dress you haven’t seen, let alone tried on, doesn’t it? 16
