Defense drives the girls soccer bus
By Daniel Kane
and Anne Marie Tobin
If it’s true that defense wins championships,
the Lynnfield girls soccer team may
be onto something.
Monday at Manchester-Essex, the
Pioneers fought their way to a 1-1 tie.
Abby Lucich scored the only goal, assisted
by Emma Montantile, in the 19th minute.
Amberly McCarter made seven saves.
On Friday, Oct. 12, the Pioneers
posted their third shutout in their last
four games (and fourth in the last six) to
run their winning streak to four games,
defeating Cape Ann League archrival
North Reading on the road, 2-0.
Montanile scored the game-winning
goal in the 30th minute, with junior
Anna Maria Ferrante notching the assist.
Ten minutes into the second half, junior
captain Tori Morelli added an insurance
goal, also from Ferrante.
“That game is always a battle for us,”
Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said of
North Reading. “It’s North Reading, so
for us it’s like Red Sox-Yankees. It (was)
a home game so they (were) up for us
and ready. It’s always a great battle,
that’s how I see it.”
With the win, the Pioneers improved
to 10-2-1 (9-2-1 CAL) to remain two
games behind CAL Kinney Division
leader Masconomet (12-0-1, 11-0-1
CAL), who the Pioneers will take on in
their next game Friday, Oct. 19 at home
on the stadium field on Senior Night (6).
The Pioneers punched their ticket to the
Division 3 North tournament Tuesday at
home with their third straight win.
“It’s great,” Vermont said of clinching
a spot in the tournament. “As a team you
want to get that done as soon as possible.
Now looking ahead we can continue to
work and improve and also focus on getting
a higher seed.”
Molly Ozanian, Montanile and Ferrante
each had one goal for the Pioneers. Ashley
Mitchell and Emma Ricciardi each had
one assist, both on perfectly placed passes
in front of the net.
“I thought we moved the ball well
today,” Vermont said. “We were attacking
and attacking well throughout the game.
We had some great opportunities on some
corner kicks and great passing.
“Those are the things we work on a
lot at practice so it’s good to see that it
pays off,” Vermont added. “I thought the
line that helped the Pioneers to a tie
Monday and two wins last week.
d zfense was strong, it’s always good to
get a shutout. In the midfield we found
the marks and moved the ball well so
overall it was a great win for us.”
The Pioneers went on the offensive
early and found the back of the net after
the first few minutes. On a Lynnfield
corner kick Mitchell placed the ball right
in front of the Triton goal, Ozanian lept
into the air and deflected the kick off her
body to put Lynnfield ahead 1-0.
Lynnfield added another goal with
13:42 remaining in the first half. After
controlling an inbound pass, Montanile
turned and ripped a far, arching shot that
slipped above the Triton goalkeeper to
extend Lynnfield’s lead to 2-0.
Meanwhile, several attempts at a scoring
chance by the Vikings were quickly shut
down by the Pioneer defense.
McCarter also made several aggressive
stops, one of which came when a
Triton attacker slipped by the Pioneer
defense with 24 minutes left to play.
McCarter made a sliding stop to steal
possession and shut down the Vikings’
best scoring chance of the day.
The rest of the second half was more
of the same as Lynnfield moved the ball
well and controlled a majority of the
play before adding another late goal.
With a few minutes left in the second
half, Ricciardi carried the ball up the right
sideline before sending a perfect pass across
field that Ferrante finished with a header
goal to extend the Lynnfield lead to 3-0.
THE SCHOOL FOR BOYS
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield field hockey
team split two games last week.
On Friday, Oct. 12, the
Pioneers improved to 11-2
with a solid 4-0 win over North
Reading. Two days earlier on
Oct. 10, Lynnfield traveled to
Triton and came up short, 3-2.
Against North Reading, the
Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead
in the first half, thanks to a big day
from junior Lily Rothwell, who
scored two goals and assisted
on two others. Her effort gave
Lynnfield coach Mamie Reardon
the luxury of resting many of
her starters and giving her bench
some much-need minutes.
“After the loss to Triton, this
game was a nice bounce back
win,” Reardon said. “We just
didn’t have it against Triton and
were totally flat and didn’t play
our game at all,but we took care
of it yesterday with a good day
of practice. Today we came out
with a lot of energy and got back
to playing our game, so that was
good. We took the ball wide,
which is something we are always
working on we had good
sticks and stops and our finesse
game was on point. I couldn’t
be happier with their effort and
I was happy I got all the seniors
and juniors into the game.”
Sophomore Maddie Murphy
opened the scoring with a goal
off a corner just two minutes
into the game. Rothwell earned
an assist on the play.
Three minutes later at the 25:09
mark, senior captain Ashley Barrett
doubled the lead to 2-0, with
Rothwell credited with an assist.
With 3:46 left in the half,
Rothwell cashed in on another
corner with Ashley and Brianna
Barrett, also a senior captain,
earning assists.
“There was just beautiful
passing on that goal, so both
Brianna and Ashley deserved
assists,” said Reardon.
Rothwell wrapped up the
scoring with her second goal of
the contest, this one with only
seven ticks left on the clock.
Lynnfield outshot the Hornets
8-1 and held an 11-0 edge in corners.
Senior Emily Dickey picked
up the win in goal with one save.
Triton 3, Lynnfield 2
At Triton, the Pioneers
dropped their second game of
the season. They dominated
possession and held a 9-5 edge
in corners and 16-5 edge in
shots, but still came up short.
Sophomore Jenn Flynn
staked the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead
at the 20:25 mark of the first
half. Ashley Barrett was credited
with an assist.
Triton bounced back with two
goals over the final five minutes
of the half to take a 2-1 lead into
halftime.
The Vikings picked up where
they left off in the second half
and bumped the lead to 3-1 at
the 23:22 mark. Rothwell cut
the deficit to 3-2 on a corner
(from Ashley Barrett) with
18:39 to go, but that was as
close as the Pioneers would
come the rest of the way.
Lynnfield’s next game is
Senior Night on Thursday, Oct.
18 against Pentucket on the stadium
field. Game time is 6 p.m.
