ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion As a
Strategy for Growth
by Alejandr a Guzm an
@aleguzm an
Our goal is to create a beloved
community, and this will require a
qualitative change in our souls as
well as a quantitative change in our
lives.
? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
There is plenty of evidence that
communities that embrace
diversity, equity and inclusion
(DEI) perform much better than
those which do not. As the United
States becomes a minority
majority country, being able to be
inclusive will be fundamental for
the prosperity of our nation.
Earlier this year the Brookings Institute released
research results stating that economic inclusion may be
the key to lasting growth and prosperity. Their
publication shows that the relationship of growth and
prosperity to inclusion grows larger and stronger over
time.
To advance in DEI, it is important that we embrace
changes at an individual level but most importantly that
we change organizations and ultimately systems.
Understanding the underlying cause of the
lack of diversity and then acting upon it is key.
I belong to organizations where we have
looked at our teams and realized the
executive team members and leadership are
not representative of the communities we
serve. Intentionality becomes relevant in
these situations, so in some instances, we
have slightly changed procedures to
guarantee we truly embrace DEI.
New Orleans has the fortune of being home to
organizations that understand the need for
diversity, equity and inclusion. These
organizations also help others achieve their
goals in this regard. Founded in 2017,
Beloved Community is a New Orleans based
organization committed to building a new
4
ecosystem that can sustain equitable, diverse schools,
businesses and neighborhoods. Their name is inspired
by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. teachings. He promoted
the concept of inclusiveness, both economically and
socially, through the notion of the ?Beloved Community.?
He stated that achieving economic and social justice is
necessary for a healthy society.
In their first year of operation they have reached more
than 1,575 students, over 170 school faculty, and more
than 2,000 youth. Beloved Community has helped
multiple organizations obtain a
budget increase allocated to
diversity, equity and inclusion
initiatives.
Beloved Community is building a
diverse voice in local leadership
across education, housing, and
the corporate sectors. They are
devoted to making sure that the
commitment to real solutions to
support DEI remains long after
any individual leader, local legislation, or funding stream
is gone. Most importantly, they are true believers that
people change systems, which is why they offer
capacity building programs to support, build and sustain
the path for growth. You can find more about their
services at wearebeloved.org.
Until next time!

Diversidad,
igualdad e
inclusión como
estrategía de
crecimiento
Por Alejandr a Guzm án
Existe suficiente evidencia
que las comunidades que
consideran la diversidad, la
equidad y la inclusión (DEI)
tienen un mejor
desempeño que aquellas
que no lo hacen. A medida
que los Estados Unidos se
convierte en un país con
mayoría de minorías, el
lograr ser inclusivos será
fundamental para la
prosperidad de nuestra
nación.
fortalece con el tiempo.
Para avanzar en DEI es
importante que llevemos a
cabo cambios a un nivel
personal. Pero aún más
importante es llevar a cabo
cambios a nivel
organizacional y,
últimamente, a nivel de
sistema. Es clave entender
cuáles son las causas
subyacentes de la falta de
diversidad y actuar sobre
ello.
Nuestra meta es crear una "amada
comunidad" lo cual requiere cambios
cualitativos en nuestras almas, y
cambios cuantitativos en nuestras
vidas.
? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Este año, el Brookings
Institute publicó los
resultados de un estudio,
afirmando que la inclusión
económica es
probablemente la clave
para el crecimiento y la
prosperidad de forma
permanente.
Su publicación muestra que
la relación, tanto del
crecimiento y prosperidad,
con la inclusión, crece y se
Formo parte de diversas
organizaciones en las que
hemos tenido que vernos
en el espejo y darnos
cuenta de que nuestros
equipos y miembros del
nivel ejecutivo no son
representativos de las
comunidades a las que
servimos. Es en estos
momentos donde la
intencionalidad se vuelve
relevante. En algunas
instancias hemos tenido
5
sirviendo a instituciones educativas a promover vivienda
económica, y a distintas corporaciones.

Get movin'!
by Christopher Ard
Mobility has always been a problem
for humans. Our earliest ancestors
used to carry things back and forth
with nothing but their body strength.
Eventually, someone invented the
wheel. The wheel transformed
humanity. No longer did people have
to carry everything. Now, they could
roll things where they needed them to
be. Fast-forwarded a few hundred
years and man began to power their
machines with steam, coal, and
wood. Bicycles were invented so
people could pedal themselves
across town. Then Henry Ford
invented the assembly line and
started producing automobiles that
nearly anyone could afford.
Of course, man wasn?t only tied to
the ground. Humans took flight over
the last several hundred years
through advances in physics and
engineering. We were now able to
get to most places on the planet,
compared to our ancestors who
could only dream of transporting
water from the river to their villages in
jars balanced on their heads.
All these advancements influenced
how and where we settled. Most
major cities are near a river or an
ocean? the world?s original
highways. Later, as we changed
transportation styles, we were able to
settle places like Las Vegas and
Denver? far from sources of water.
The look and feel of our cities are tied
to transportation and density. If your
city developed in the 1900?s, chances
are, there are large highways for the
movement of cars. It?s likely difficult
to get around without a car. The
population is likely to be more obese
because people walk less. If your city
was settled before the invention of
the automobile, like New Orleans and
most cities in Latin America, you?ll
notice narrow streets, smaller homes,
and distinct neighborhoods because
people were used to living within a
more confined area.
Take some time to learn about the
new transportation methods
available to us in New Orleans and
you?ll see just how similar we are to
Latin American and European cities.
As I write this article, I am on my way
to Florence, Italy, and Berlin,
Germany? two older and dense
cities. I personally like visiting these
places because they allow me to
walk easily everywhere. I don?t have
to rent a car, and I can walk around
and see everything the city has to
offer.
Luckily for me, I live in New Orleans,
which gives me the same advantages
in my everyday life. We live in a
small, big city? all the amenities of a
large city, but in a compact area.
When the weather is nice, I can walk
to work, or to the French Quarter, or
just to get a cup of coffee. Besides
destressing, the exercise is good for
my heart, and helps me maintain my
weight? although I probably could
lose a little more.
For those of us who have been here
since before 2005, our methods of
urban transportation have changed
drastically. Most of us remember
when the only option was the bus or
your personal vehicle. The streetcars
were an Uptown thing and not close
to our homes. Today, the City of New
Orleans has over 100 miles of bike
lanes and counting. Recent safety
measures that have been
implemented are making walking and
biking in New Orleans safer for
everyone. It?s true that some people
are complaining about this new
addition to the driving experience in
New Orleans, but like every other
city? we change.
Take some time to learn about the
new transportation methods available
to us in New Orleans and you?ll see
just how similar we are to Latin
American and European cities. Rent
a Blue Bike and visit the new Moon
Walk along the river. Catch the
streetcar from the cemeteries to
downtown. Ride through Mid-City on
a dedicated pedestrian path called
the Lafitte Greenway.
Autumn is here. Get outside and
enjoy your pedestrian-friendlier city!
Lafitte Greenway Bike Path. Photo: Lafitte Greenway.org.
8
corazón y me ayuda a mantener mi
peso, aunque probablemente podría
perder un poco más.
Quienes hemos vivido aquí desde
antes del 2005, podemos notar un
cambio drástico en el transporte
urbano. Antes, las únicas opciones de
transporte eran un vehículo personal
o el autobús, pues los tranvías eran
exclusivos para el área de Uptown y
no transitaban cerca de nuestras
casas o en otros barrios.
Hoy en día, la ciudad de Nueva
Orleans cuenta con más de 100
millas de carriles para bicicletas.
Recientemente, se instalaron
postes para estacionar las
bicicletas, y se han
implementado medidas extras
de seguridad para proteger a
transeúntes y ciclistas.
Es cierto que algunas personas
se quejan de esta nueva
incorporación a la experiencia de
conducir en Nueva Orleans, pero
como todas las demás ciudades,
debemos cambiar.
Tómese un tiempo para conocer
los nuevos métodos de
transporte disponibles en Nueva
Orleans y verá lo similares que
somos a ciudades de América
Latina y Europa. Alquile una
bicicleta azul y visite el nuevo
Moon Walk a lo largo del río, o tome el
tranvía desde los cementerios hasta el
centro de la ciudad. Recorra Mid-City
en el sendero exclusivo para peatones
y ciclistas llamado Lafitte Greenway.
peatones!
HEALTH CHECK
It is Flu Season: Protect Yourself and
your Children
by Arturo GastaNaduy, M.D.
The ?Flu? is a highly
contagious respiratory
disease caused by the
Influenza viruses. It
usually comes during
the Fall and Winter
months and attacks
millions of people.
Most illnesses are
mild-moderate.
However, about a half
million persons require
hospitalization and
between 12,000 and
56,000 die from it each
year. People exposed to
influenza become ill in 1
to 4 days with sudden
onset of high fever, chills,
fatigue, body aches,
headache, sore throat,
cough and nose
congestion. The illness
lasts between 7 to10
days and resolves
gradually.
Influenza complications
could be moderate like
ear and sinus infections
or severe like pneumonia,
inflammation of the
heart, brain, and muscles,
and generalized infection.
The complications are
produced by the virus
itself and by co-infection
with other germs.
Severe disease and death
are more common in
infants and small
children, adults over 65
years, pregnant women
and persons with chronic
conditions like asthma,
diabetes, cancer, heart
disease, etc.
Influenza vaccine is the
most effective way to
prevent the illness and its
complications. Everyone
older than 6 months of
age should be vaccinated.
Yearly immunization is
needed because the
viruses change with time.
The best season for
vaccination is the Fall.
Influenza can be
diagnosed with a nose
swab sample and doctors
can prescribe medicines
to treat it. These
medicines do not prevent
the disease, but they can
make it less severe, and
to be more effective, they
should be given during
the first two days of the
illness.
You can prevent the
spread of influenza by
vaccinating yourself and
your family members,
and by following simple
steps like covering your
mouth and nose when
coughing or sneezing,
hand washing and
avoiding contact with sick
people.
respiratoria altamente contagiosa
personas enfermas.

Needing an about-face, Liliana moved
from Mexico City to New Orleans in
2015.
South of Eden
by Leslie Almeida @nola.eats
Bad habits are hard to break, especially
when they are the kind associated with
food. We eat our feelings, snack while
bored, and overindulge; in a city like
New Orleans, it?s difficult not to. Our
food-obsessed society has even
associated certain days of the week
with food-themed hashtags, such as
#MeatlessMonday and #TacoTuesday.
Coincidentally, Liliana Ruiz-Healy
knows a thing or two about both of
those topics.
Liliana, a native of Mexico City, is the
proprietor of South of Eden, a vegan
pop-up serving authentic Mexican
recipes with a healthy approach. Each
Sunday, her team takes over the
kitchen at Good Karma Cafe, another
vegan eatery, located in a building that
shares space with Swan River Yoga. It?s
more than fitting that South of Eden
sets up shop there; Liliana, a Culinary
Nutritionist and Health Coach, prefers
to describe her menu as plant-based
rather than vegan, emphasizing that
eating meat-free does not necessarily
equate to eating healthy.
As a teenager and young adult, Liliana
Liliana, a native of Mexico
City, is the proprietor of
South of Eden, a vegan
pop-up serving authentic
Mexican recipes w ith a
healthy approach.
the mind and body from within. Her
strategy is one she implemented and
has seen work for herself.
?I dealt with a lot of eating disorders
and body image issues for many years.
This led me to depression, anxiety,
fatigue, and pre-diabetes. I went to
psychiatrists, dermatologists,
dietitians, you name it.?
With no solution in sight from medical
professionals, Liliana did her own
research. She experimented with
omitting meat and animal by-products
from her diet and
began to see
improvements in
the condition of her
skin, energy levels
and overall health.
But, with traditional
recipes calling for
meat, lard and
dairy, where does a
vegan fit into a
Mexican
household?
?I think at first they
?I was pretty stuck with my life and felt
I needed a big change. This seemed a
little tricky to do back home, since,
well? in order for big changes to
happen, you need to break away from
the routine, the normal, the
comfortable. I was ready for a new
adventure, and New Orleans captured
me on my first visit.? Soon after, Liliana
became certified as a Health Coach
from Dr. Sears Health Coaching School,
and as a Culinary Nutritionist from
Plantlab Culinary School, focusing on
herbalism, Chinese medicine and
Ayurveda.
In 2017, she earned her certification in
Plant-Based Cooking and Desserts
from Plantlab, perfecting her
technique with raw foods. Liliana?s
aspirations as a nutritionist and as a
chef led to the creation of South of
Eden. Her menu, while meat-free,
showcases dishes that are as appealing
to the eye as they are delicious.
?Plant-based food has a place in
high-end cuisine, with beautiful
ingredients, plating and techniques. I
just want to do what I enjoy the most,
to share the flavors I grew up with in
Mexico, and breaking the idea that
Liliana Ruiz-H ealy (2nd fr om r ight) with the team at South of Eden.
Mexican food is burritos, margaritas and nachos.?
The menu at South of Eden is quite varied, offering Mexican
comfort dishes, twists on brunch classics, and house made
baked goods. The satisfyingly crunchy chilaquiles feature a
bright chile salsa and a vegan almond cream that can pass
for the real deal. For those that prefer their brunch
resemble dessert, options like the high-protein Belgian
waffle with dairy-free coconut whipped topping placate the
sweet tooth with ingredients you won?t feel guilty about
enjoying. Also, on the menu is a menagerie of coffee, herbal
teas, and intriguing beverages such as a kombucha ice
cream float or beet latte.
Such a diverse and creative menu calls for an equally
talented staff. Liliana doesn?t hesitate to commend her
all-female team, noting that vulnerability and the ability to
communicate are as necessary as basic knife skills.
?South of Eden is a team. I don?t like to take full credit, and I
can?t. They really hold it down. They are patient with me,
they understand my brain, they make all my ideas take
shape, and they have amazing ideas and knowledge.?
@southofeden_nola. South of Eden pops-up Sundays at 2940 Canal Str eet.
cacao brew. "The goal is to open our own brick and mortar
in the future, and at some point, take this concept back
getting creative.?
Los malos hábitos son difíciles de
romper, especialmente cuando se
trata de malos hábitos alimenticios.
Comemos nuestros sentimientos,
merendamos cuando estamos
aburridos, y además, nos
excedemos, sobre todo en una
Ciudad como Nueva Orleans.
Liliana Ruiz-Healy, originaria de la
Ciudad de México, es la propietaria
de South of Eden, un pop-up
vegano que sirve auténticas recetas
mexicanas con un enfoque
saludable. Cada domingo, su
equipo toma el control de la cocina
en Good Karma Café, otro
restaurante vegano, ubicado en un
edificio que comparte espacio con
Swan River Yoga. Tiene sentido que
South of Eden esté ubicado ahí,
pues Liliana es nutricionista
culinaria y asesora de salud, y
prefiere describir su menú como
?basado en plantas?, en lugar de
vegano, enfatizando que comer sin
carne no equivale necesariamente a
comer saludable.
En su adolescencia y juventud,
Liliana luchó contra los efectos
mentales y físicos de una dieta
deficiente. Hoy en día, prepara
platos que son agradables al
paladar, pero que nutren la mente
con una estrategia que ella misma
implementó y ha visto funcionar de
primera mano. ?Lidié con muchos
trastornos alimenticios y problemas
de imagen corporal durante muchos
años. Esto me llevó a la depresión,
la ansiedad, la fatiga y a la
prediabetes. Fui a psiquiatras, a
14
dermatólogos, a dietistas, a lo que
te puedas imaginar?, comenta
Ruiz-Healy.
Sin ninguna solución a la vista por
parte de los profesionales médicos,
Liliana hizo su propia investigación.
Ella experimentó omitiendo la carne
y los subproductos animales de su
dieta, y comenzó a ver mejoras en
la condición de su piel, los niveles
de energía y la salud en general.
Pero? ¿Dónde encaja un vegano
en una familia mexicana?
"Creo que al principio pensaron que
era una locura, pero mientras más
tiempo pasaba, las bromas se
detuvieron, y vieron que iba en serio
con esto. Aun así, mis padres
apoyaron mucho en este viaje?,
comenta Liliana.
Ruiz-Healy se mudó de México a
Nueva Orleans en el 2015. ?Estaba
bastante estancada con mi vida y
sentía que necesitaba un gran
cambio. Estaba lista para una nueva
aventura, y Nueva Orleans me
cautivó desde mi primera visita?,
comenta. Se certificó como asesora
de salud de Dr. Sears Health
Coaching School, y como
nutricionista culinaria de Plantlab
Culinary School, centrándose en
herboristería, medicina china y
Ayurveda.
En el 2017, obtuvo su certificación
en cocina basada en plantas y
W affle belga de South of Eden.
postres de Plantlab, perfeccionando
su técnica con alimentos crudos.
Las aspiraciones de Liliana como
nutricionista y como chef llevaron a
la creación de South of Eden, un
concepto de menú sin carnes, que
presenta platos atractivos a la vista
e igualmente deliciosos. ?Solo
quiero hacer lo que más disfruto,
compartir los sabores con los que
crecí en México, y romper la noción
de que la comida mexicana son
burritos, margaritas y nachos?,
comenta Liliana.
M ar i Chavez and Liliana Ruiz-H ealy
El menú de South of Eden es
bastante variado, y ofrece platos
clásicos mexicanos, con
variaciones en los brunch y postres
caseros. Los chilaquiles son
crujientes, y junto a su colorida
salsa de chile y una crema de
almendra vegana, se convierten en
un plato que satisface.
Para quienes prefieren un brunch
dulce, hay opciones como el waffle
belga, con alto contenido de
proteínas, y el batido de coco sin
lácteos alivia el gusto por lo dulce
con ingredientes que se pueden
disfrutar sin culpa.
¿Dónde encaja un
vegano en una fam ilia
m exicana?
El menú también ofrece una
combinación de cafés, infusiones
de hierbas e intrigantes bebidas,
como el batido de kombucha, o el
latte de remolacha.
?South of Eden
es un equipo. No
me gusta tomar
Realmente este
equipo de
mujeres me
impresiona. Son
pacientes
conmigo,
entienden mi
visión, hacen que
todas mis ideas tomen forma y
tienen ideas y conocimientos
sorprendentes?, comenta
Ruiz-Healy.
Los horarios de los domingos en
Good Karma se han extendido
recientemente de 2 a 5 p.m. Si se le
hace difícil coincidir con los horarios
de este pop-up, puede encontrar
productos de South of Eden en el
mercado de Crescent City, los
martes, y en el de Mid-City, los
jueves. Estos productos incluyen
yogur sin lácteos, kimchi, tinturas,
sopas y una infusión de cacao.
?El objetivo es abrir nuestro propio
local en el futuro, y en algún
momento, llevar este concepto a
casa en México. Mientras
lleguemos allí, seguiremos siendo
creativos?, puntualiza Ruiz-Healy.
OUT & ABOUT
Thank sgiving
By Angela Hernandez
When it comes to celebrating
holidays, there are many that
translate well as they are universal
holidays. And then, there are some
that we adopt and make our own.
Growing up in the United States I
never realized that holidays such
as Thanksgiving don?t exist in my
parents?countries. And yet my
parents and grandparents came to
this country and embraced this
holiday for what it represents: The
act of giving thanks and family.
For me, Thanksgiving means
driving 5 hours to Houston to visit
with my tios y primos. It means
?estrenar? a new outfit even if all
you are doing is chasing after your
baby cousins or sitting in the living
room chatting with your aunts. It?s
the smell of pernil that?s been
cooking for hours and trying to
steal a spoonful of arroz con
gandules when nobody is
16
watching. Or finally, hearing my tio
announce that the food is ready,
but making sure that first we give
thanks to God for all the good He
has done for us.
I couldn?t help but
laugh at how true
som e of these
observations are and
how strange m y
Thanksgiving traditions
m ight seem .
And I can?t forget my second
favorite part of the night, after
eating, of course? we take
pictures! Taking pictures can last
over an hour as we make sure to
take every group photo possible.
First, the Hernandez and then the
Posas, the Aranzazu and the
Valladares. Now all the first cousins
and now the new generation. It can
be annoying, but at the same time
my Thanksgiving wouldn?t be
Thanksgiving without it.
Local TV personality and DJ Felipe
Estrada never celebrated
Thanksgiving before moving to the
United States. In fact, the first time
he celebrated the holiday was
while visiting family in Orlando,
Florida when he was 15 years-old.
Although the holiday was strange
to him, he remembers trying sweet
potato pie for the first time and
really liking it. ?At first I didn?t get it,
but the following year I ended up
understanding the whole concept,?
said Estrada. Since his first
Thanksgiving, Estrada?s family
continues to celebrate the holiday
as a fusion of his two cultures,
stating that at his table there is
always a turkey and the Honduran
stape, sopa de caracol (conch
soup).
EatenPathNola?s Nicole Caridad
Ralston had a different experience
while growing up in South Florida
with her Cuban family. From a very
young age, Ralston loved to help
her mother in the kitchen. ?Our
menu was very different. We
always had a turkey, but we also
had congri, yuca, platano, so it was
a mix,? said Ralston. Even now the
food blogger loves to cook and
volunteers to prepare the turkey in
a mojo, whether she is spending
time with her family in Florida or
with her husband?s family.
It also never occurred to me how
my Thanksgiving experience
differed from that of my non-Latino
friends. I recently had a non-Latino
friend tell me that she thought it was so odd how we
dress so fancy or how we eat so late. Another friend
told me that he was shocked because his family tends
to be distant, but he was surprised at how his Latino
friend?s family made him feel right at home. I couldn?t
help but laugh at how true some of these observations
are and how strange my Thanksgiving traditions might
seem.
While Thanksgiving might not be a universal holiday
and our traditions vary from person to person, one thing
is for sure: Thanksgiving has a universal message, one
that everyone can relate to regardless of the cultural
barrier.
As humans, sometimes we can get so wrapped-up in
our daily lives that we forget to be grateful. In some
ways I think this holiday is necessary to slow down for
at least one day to recount the good things in our
life? and if it comes with a side of pernil and arroz con
gandules, why not?
Día de
Acción
de
Gracias
extrañas a otras personas.
gandules? ¿Por qué no?
Thelma
Ceballos-Meyers:
Challenge
Completed
COVER STORY
by AnaM ar ia Bech
Thelma Ceballos-Meyers is the number one State Farm Agent
in Louisiana, a great accomplishment for any insurance agent.
It?s an even greater accomplishment for a Latina who beat the
odds after becoming a teenage mother.
Ceballos-M eyer s displays sever al or iginal ar t pieces fr om local New
Or leans ar tists thr oughout her office.
Chances are that you have driven by one of the many
billboards with her name and face on display, but what you
don?t know is that to get all this recognition and achieve
success, there have been great sacrifices.
Ceballos-Meyers ?did everything backwards,? she claims, when
referring to the fact that she had a baby at 16, finished high
school two years after, and got married years later. ?I did not
become a statistic,? is what she prides herself on when
reflecting on her accomplishments and analyzing the outcome
of many other teenage mothers.
Ceballos-Meyers is a very energetic person with a great smile
all the time. She is a hands-on type of boss who will greet you
in the office, serve you water, answer the phones, and close
shop. Even after a steady business and a good financial
position, she gets in early and stays up late if necessary. When
business is slow, she joins her team to hand out flyers from
door to door. Ceballos-Meyers does not sit still.
She met her husband Craig Meyers
when she worked at the Sheriff?s
Department. After working there for a
while, she wondered what else she
could do to end the paycheck to
paycheck financial cycle. She
attempted to be a medical assistant,
but cleaning wounds was not for her.
She really wanted to be a court
stenographer, but classes got canceled
because enrollment was low. She then
moved on to work as a secretary at a
State Farm Agency. Always the hardest
working person in the room,
Ceballos-Meyers kept looking for a way
to bring more money home.
?When I tell you, I couldn?t buy a pack
of gum, that is an understatement.? As
a single parent, Ceballos-Meyers had to
work hard to provide for her daughter
Jessica. For many years, they had just
enough. ?People live a lifestyle that
they cannot afford, but they miss
what?s more important,? and for
Ceballos-Meyers, providing a good
education for her daughter was
priority. She chose to pay for private
school and forgo nice things for herself
like a better car or an expensive
handbag.
Being a young mother grounded her.
Going out was not an option because
even though she found a great support
system in her parents and
grandmother to help with her child,
they would only take care of Jessica for
work and school-related activities.
While working at State Farm,
Ceballos-Meyers began realizing that
agents could earn good salaries. In her
former boss she found a mentor and a
voice of encouragement who kept
reminding her that she had all the
capabilities to become a successful
agent. State Farm paid for her school,
so she attended Tulane University,
where she got an associates degree in
Business Administration and
Marketing. 2007 was the year she
graduated, and the year she became a
State Farm Agent.
Ceballos-Meyers had a lot of
encouragement and support from her
former boss, but she also heard
negative reasons from other agents as
to why she should not attempt her
own agency. ?There are no clients, they
used to tell me. I said, let me figure
that out.?
Ceballos-Meyers had noticed that
21
Ceballos-M eyer s at wor k in her office located at 501 W hitney Avenue in Gr etna. Photo: Daniel Er ath
in her area there was no one tapping
into the Hispanic market. After
Hurricane Katrina there were so
many questions about insurance.
People, including herself, were so
confused with coverages, and she
noticed people in the Hispanic
community were totally lost. She was
ready to fill a need while also
carrying out her mission to
educate her community.
?State Farm gave me the
opportunity, and I was willing
to out-work anybody else
that they were going to give it
to.? On December 1, 2007,
just a few months after
becoming an agent, she
opened the doors to Thelma
Ceballos-Meyers State Farm
Agency, along with three
full-time employees and her
daughter, who worked
part-time.
?There was no Latina State
Farm Agent. I?m the first, and still the
only one after 10 years. From day one
our goal was to educate our clients
about their policies and the financial
services.? She knew her grandmother
and mother were known in the
community, so she dragged them to
all of her events, and that?s how
Ceballos-Meyers began to market
herself.
Ceballos-Meyers believes in brand
recognition and early-on she
22
advertised in various media while
sponsoring several community
events. After just three years in
business, she opened the doors to
her new beautiful facility on 501
Whitney Avenue, where the agency
has operated for the last seven years.
Ceballos-M eyer s (left) with her father , Cesar and her daughter , Jessica.
Her team now consists of seven
full-time employees who can help
customers in English, Spanish and
Vietnamese. Besides the auto, home,
property, business, life and health
insurance policies, the Thelma
Ceballos-Meyers State Farm Agency
also offers financial services.
Ceballos-Meyers remembers the first
agency years of 12 to 14-hour long
days. She jokes about getting to work
at seven in the morning and having
moments where she would cry and
pray that things were going to go
right that day before getting out of
her car. Having a supportive husband
was key to her success and she
makes sure to give credit to her
husband Craig. ?He knew I did not eat
sometimes because I was so busy, so
he would bring me lunch.? Together,
they would clean the office every
Sunday, and if something needed
fixing, ?Craig was my fix-it guy.? She is
also grateful about having assembled
a great team. ?Team is everything. I
cannot do this by myself,? she says
and reassures that if anyone was to
attempt their own agency, she would
be happy to share her knowledge,
but ?the most important thing is to
remember is that it takes a lot of
work.?
Positivity and high energy are evident
traits in Ceballos-Meyers. To relieve
the mental stress from the job and to
stay fit and healthy, she makes sure
to work out every day. She started
running in her 40?s. Now that her
team is established, and business is
steady, Ceballos-Meyers devotes
some time to training and competing
in triathlons, a passion she
began at 44. ?When you hang out
with people who work out, they
are so much more positive than
people who don?t. Their outlook
in life is so much different and I
admired that, so I wanted to be
like them, and I began to do
triathlons.?
Ceballos-Meyers did not know
how to swim well then, so she
asked a lady at her gym to give
her some tips. She ventured into
her first triathlon where she had
to swim 300 yards in a pool. ?I
was exhausted,? she laughs,
while adding she still had to bike
and run. But like with any other
challenge in her life, she overcame
and now competes all over the
region.
Always learning new things and
challenging herself is the way
Ceballos-Meyers achieves things in
life. In looking for ways to help her
clients, she discovered AARP
discounts. When she realized there
were no Spanish AARP volunteer
instructors in the state of Louisiana,
she took charge, spent the
time in training, and became
one. She volunteers her limited
off hours to provide free
classes to adults aged 55 and
over, who get a 3-year discount
just by attending the class.
?Which agent takes the time to
tell you if you take the class
you can save money??
Ceballos-Meyers asks while
adding that the experience has
helped her know clients better
and people see her willingness
to help.
Ceballos-Meyers gives back to
the community in many ways.
She has served on the boards
of multiple organizations,
including the Jefferson
Workforce, the Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce and
the AARP Diversity Council,
among others. She also
supports many charitable community initiatives.
Ceballos-Meyers is in a happy place. After all the
sacrificing during her youth to provide for her daughter,
she can now devote time to her hobbies. She is an atypical
Ceballos-M eyer s com petes alongside her husband, Cr aig M eyer s.
grandmother of three, who
enjoys spending time with her
family. The New Orleanian,
who is the second child of a
Guatemalan father and a
Nicaraguan mother, enjoys
traveling and going to festivals.
She loves to dance, even
though she does not get the
chance to do it that often. She
eats healthy food, but can?t
resist a Guatemalan breakfast
with chirmol, black beans and
hand-made tortillas.
Her goal is to keep her
company going strong and to
invest intelligently, so she can
secure a decent retirement.
She emphasizes the
importance of planning for
retirement and is happy to
guide people in that respect.
?Thelma actually cares,?
Ceballos-Meyers says when asked about what people
should know about her. She knows the importance of
receiving the right advice and getting a helping hand. ?I
honestly want to help. If I can help within reason, I will.?

Thelma Ceballos-Meyers
clientes. Ceballos-Meyers no se queda
quieta.
"State Farm me dio la
oportunidad, y estaba
dispuesta a superar a cualquier
otra persona a la que se lo
entregarían?
Conoció a su esposo Craig Meyers
cuando trabajaba en el Departamento
del Alguacil. Después de haber estado
ahí varios años, se preguntaba qué
más podría hacer para mejorar sus
finanzas. Intentó ser asistente médica,
pero limpiar heridas no era para ella.
Lo que realmente le interesaba era ser
taquígrafa de la corte, pero las clases
se cancelaron porque la inscripción
era baja.
En ese punto, llegó para trabajar
como secretaria en una agencia de
State Farm. Siempre fue la persona
más trabajadora en la sala.
Ceballos-Meyers siguió buscando una
manera de llevar más dinero a casa.
"Cuando te digo que no podía comprar
chicles, eso es un eufemismo?, comenta
Thelma. Como madre soltera, tuvo
que esforzarse mucho para mantener
a su hija Jessica. Durante muchos años
tuvieron apenas lo suficiente para
vivir. "Las personas viven un estilo de
vida que no pueden costear, pero
omiten lo más importante?, reflexiona
Thelma. Y para ella, la prioridad era
una buena educación para su hija.
Eligió pagar un colegio privado, y
renunciar a lujos para sí misma, como
un mejor auto o un bolso costoso.
Ser una madre joven la centró. Salir no
estudios. Cuando sus amigos salían,
Ceballos-Meyers estaba en casa
pensando cómo balancear un
presupuesto.
Mientras trabajaba en State Farm,
Ceballos-Meyers comenzó a darse
cuenta de que los agentes podían
ganar buenos salarios. En su exjefe
encontró un mentor y una voz de
aliento, que le recordaba que tenía
todas las capacidades para
convertirse en una agente exitosa.
State Farm pagó por su educación, y
así pudo asistir a la Universidad de
Tulane, donde obtuvo una licenciatura
en Administración de Empresas y
Mercadotecnia.
"State Farm me dio la oportunidad, y estaba dispuesta a
trabajaba medio tiempo.
"No había ninguna agente Latina en State Farm.
medios mientras patrocinaba eventos comunitarios.
servicios financieros.
Juntos, iban a
Comenzó a participar corriendo
comencé a hacer triatlones?, comenta Thelma.
>>
20 Ceballos-M eyer s after com pleting the 2018 Cr awfishm an Tr iathlon in Bush, LA. pidió a una señora en su gimnasio que le diera algunos 25
consejos. Se aventuró en su primer
triatlón, donde tuvo que nadar 300
yardas en una piscina. "Estaba
agotada", ríe al recordarlo, y agrega
que todavía faltaba la parte de
ciclismo y atletismo. Pero como con
cualquier otro desafío en su vida, lo
superó, y ahora compite en toda la
región.
Aprender siempre cosas nuevas y
festivales. Le encanta bailar, aunque
no tiene la oportunidad de hacerlo
tan a menudo. Le gusta comer
saludable, pero no puede resistirse a
un desayuno guatemalteco con
chirmol, frijoles negros y tortillas
hechas a mano.
Su objetivo es mantener su compañía
a flote e invertir de manera
inteligente para asegurar que en un
futuro pueda retirarse
decentemente.
"Honestamente
quiero ayudar. Si puedo ayudar dentro
de lo razonable, lo haré?, puntualiza.
ALEXEY
MARTi
By Jorge Fuentes
The presence of Alexey Marti is impressive. He has a
thunderous voice, he is a robust man with a guarded but
kind smile, a sincere handshake, and a pleasant and
entertaining conversation.
He arrived in New Orleans 10 years ago from Havana with
the music of Cuba in his arms. Alexey is a percussionist
and composer, and currently in high demand in the city.
He started playing the conga drums when he was a child
within his family environment, sharing with his uncles, but
he plays any percussion instrument placed in front of him.
He knows in depth the African traditions that are passed
from person to person on the island. "I'm self-taught," he
says. "I studied with Oscar Valdez, ex-vocalist and
percussionist of Irakere." As if that training wasn?t enough,
part of his education came by witnessing the rehearsals of
the members of the renowned Afro-Cuban fusion band,
and to rehearse by himself 10 or 12 hours per day. "The
virtuoso becomes," he says with great confidence adding
the saying "to eat fish you have to get wet."
Marti further studied in the jazz program at the University
of New Orleans (UNO). At the close of this edition, he is
putting the final touches to his second album, entitled
"Mundo."
This work is more accessible, more folkloric, and it shows
how many different things can be done with the root of
music," he explains.
The 14 singles that comprise Mundo include compositions
influenced by genres such as ballad, samba, bossa nova,
and salsa, as well as traditional African, Haitian and Cuban
rhythms.
"Anthropology plays a very important role for the
musician," he emphasizes. The making of the album also
reflects its cosmopolitan aspect, since it was recorded in
New Orleans, Miami, New York, Havana, Brazil, Puerto Rico
and Spain. The album is being published this November.
When saying goodbye, Alexey tells us that he has another
album to come. It will be a salsa one this time, coming in
January of next year, which clearly shows that he is a
prolific creator.
"A piece becomes universal when it can be played in
different genres and cultures," he concludes by adding
"and when it produces the same feeling in different
people," Marti concludes.
28
When asked about the focus of his new work, Alexey
says that "it is an album of reuniting with the spirits.
La presencia de Alexey Martí es
imponente. Tiene una voz de
trueno. Es un hombre robusto de
sonrisa guardada pero amable, de
un apretón de manos sincero, de
conversación nutrida y amena.
Llegó a New Orleans hace 10 años
desde La Habana con la música de
Cuba en sus brazos. Alexey es
percusionista y compositor, y se
encuentra con mucha demanda en
la ciudad.
Comenzó tocando las tumbadoras
desde niño en el entorno familiar,
con sus tíos, pero toca cuanto
instrumento de percusión se le
ponga enfrente, y conoce a fondo
las tradiciones africanas que se
transmiten de persona a persona
en la isla. ?Soy autodidacta?, dice,
?estudié con Oscar Valdez, exvocalista
y percusionista de Irakere.?Por si
fuera poco, parte de su educación
era presenciar los ensayos de los
integrantes de la reconocida banda
de fusión afrocubana, y ensayar
por su cuenta por diez o doce
horas al día. ?El virtuoso se hace?,
dice con mucha confianza, ?Para
comer pescado hay que mojarse.?
También estudió en el programa de
jazz de la Universidad de New
Orleans (UNO). Al cierre de esta
edición, se encuentra poniéndole
los toques finales a su segundo
disco, titulado ?Mundo?.
tradicionales africanos, haitianos y
cubanos. ?La antropología juega un
papel muy importante para el
músico?, enfatiza.
La realización del disco también
refleja su aspecto cosmopolita, ya
que se grabó en New Orleans,
Miami, New York, La Habana,
Brasil, Puerto Rico y España. El
disco se publica este mes de
noviembre.
culturas?, finaliza diciendo, ?y
cuando hace que la gente tenga el
mismo sentimiento?.
VIVIR MEJOR
P.O.W.E.R. By Andrea Mejia
Fidelity Bank
A few years ago, Tammy O'Shea,
Marketing Manager of Fidelity
Bank, had the vision of creating a
program for businesswomen and
clients of the financial institution.
Although it took time to convince
the Board of Directors, thanks to
the presence of Katie Crosby as
Chairman of the Board and the
perseverance of O'Shea, who
believed in her dream, P.O.W.E.R.
(Potential of Women
Entrepreneurs Realized) became a
reality in October of last year, and
already counts with almost 400
members.
Its director, Liz Broekman, has
given her soul, life, heart, and even
her wardrobe, to this powerful
initiative, which has as its main
objective to generate growth
opportunities for business owners
so that they can prosper and
engage in powerful businesses.
Broekman believes that the
program has been very successful
because "women take care of each
other. It is part of our nature."
P.O.W.E.R. holds informational and
educational seminars for its
members. The "P.O.W.E.R. Hour" is
very unique. At the end of every
quarter, a group of around 10
members participate in a powerful
hour at a particular branch, where
they have breakfast together, and
discuss a particular topic. This
30 setting serves as an opportunity
to get answers, share experiences
and learnings, and generate new
ideas for developing their
businesses.
At Fidelity Bank they welcome you
in a friendly way, and you do not
feel that you enter a regular bank,
but you feel part of a community.
To be a member of P.O.W.E.R. you
just need to have a bank account
with Fidelity Bank. Membership
applies to female business owners
and partners, executives, directors,
or leaders of nonprofit
organizations.
As a member of P.O.W.E.R. you are
added to a directory where other
members can find and
recommend you, which is the most
valuable part of this program for
entrepreneurs, since a
recommendation is essential for
businesses to thrive.
P.O.W.E.R. sponsors events of
organizations, such as New
Orleans Business Alliance
(NOLABA), American Business
Women Association (ABWA), NABO,
the Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce, among others, and
their directives make sure to
support the initiatives of its
members.
Through P.O.W.E.R., women
entrepreneurs are featured in
marketing campaigns, which
serves as additional exposure for
their businesses. Activities like
"happy hours," seminars and
executive lunches are part of the
benefits for women in P.O.W.E.R.
Beyond these benefits, it is fun
that checks, cards and other
materials are purple, a feminine
color that identifies us as powerful
women, and that makes us feel
unique and important. What are
you waiting for, as a woman
entrepreneur, to be a part of this
powerful program?
Aunque
obtener respuestas, compartir experiencias y
Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA), American Business
importantes. ¿Qué estás esperando tú, como mujer
emprendedora, para formar parte de este poderoso
programa?
TECH TALK
Black Friday & Cyber Monday
What is Black Friday and Cyber Monday? These are the
days when stores have their lowest prices of the year.
Black Friday started back in the early 1950?s and was
introduced to get stores out of the year-end?s red
numbers and get them to profit. Cyber Monday started
in 2005 as a need to get the most out of the long
weekend and to profit from those who prefer to shop
digitally and avoid the crowds.
This year?s Black Friday is on November 23rd and Cyber
Monday is on the 26th. These take place after
Thanksgiving opening the holiday shopping season.
These special offer days happen with stores lowering
their prices on most of their electronic items for deals
that entice people to camp outside the store fronts.
Most of the time stores have limited quantities of stock
on their best deals, which creates the high demand.
It is worth noting that big brands have special models
that do not include all the features, so they can have
these discounted items on these days.
You can find out ahead of time which items will be on
sale in a store through apps and local newspapers.
Some people refrain from purchasing electronics during
the whole year, waiting for these days to score a great
deal.
Which of these days is better for shopping? Black Friday
has better deals, but stock is limited, and you must be
there fighting the crowds to take advantage of the
deals.
With more and more stores closing and filing for
bankruptcy because of online retailers having better
deals, it all points towards eventually having an only
online-sale holiday in the future. Last year?s ?Black
Friday? sales fell 4% while ?Cyber Monday? sales rose
18% as people were shopping comfortably from a
computer and avoiding the crowds.
