Mouth Cancer Action Month
13
by Sheila Macintyre
Practice Owner at Kilbarchan Dental Practice
Kilbarchan Dental Practice is once again supporting
Mouth Cancer Action Month - a charity campaign which
aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving
thousands of lives through early detection and prevention.
In the UK, more than 7,800 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year
and globally there are in excess of 300,000 new cases every year.
The number of people being diagnosed with mouth cancer has grown by
around a third in the last decade and remains one of very few cancers which
are predicted to increase further in the coming years.
Although risk factors such as smoking are heavily linked to the disease, mouth
cancer can affect anyone – that’s why it’s so important that we all know what
to look out for and what preventative measures we can take:
- Don’t leave a mouth ulcer unattended for more than three weeks.
- Don’t ignore any unusual lumps or swellings or red and white patches in your
mouth.
- Visit your dentist at least once a year, even if you wear dentures and particularly
if you smoke and drink.
- Maintain a healthy diet. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg and cutting down
on smoking and alcohol consumption will certainly help lower the risk.
- Early detection could save your life. If you notice any changes in your mouth
speak to a dentist or doctor immediately.
5 Marathons in 5
days
My dad, Laurence Christie (aged 63 from Bridge
of Weir), arranged a charity event to raise money
for Stand Up to Cancer in the Cancer Research
shop, Linwood. He’s been running 5 marathons
over 5 consecutive days with members of the
public, staff and friends and family taking small
stints to let him grab a drink/help out in the shop
with tills etc. You see celebrities doing all these
things and getting massive publicity but he’s
just quietly gotten on with it and enjoyed every
second (well maybe not the chafing).
Day one my dad did 22.4 miles averaging 6.1mph,
wife Liz and Cancer Research volunteer Chris did
3.8 miles taking the full marathon 1 to 4hours
41mins 30secs. All this at a 10% incline.
Day two my dad did 22.4miles and members of
the public and Cancer Research staff made up the rest of the 26.2 marathon
taking it to 4hours 52mins and 20secs. Today a wonderful 80 year old survivor
happened to be in the store, did a few minutes stint (think he was scared what
his wife would say if he did any more) and shared his story. Also at a 10%
incline.
Day three my dad had help from a few Houston residents (my friends roped in)
meaning he only had to do a mere 13 miles himself of the total 26.2. Totalling
4hours 12mins between them. Today they discovered that the treadmill had
been at a 10% incline for the past two days.
Day four my dad did 20 miles with volunteers taking on the other 6.2. 4hours
20mins.
Today I’m taking my children in to “help Grandad out”. So his average speed
may be slightly dented (not by the kids, by me). I wanted to give him a big
shout-out because we’re all so proud of him. My dad has been volunteering
several days a week in the Cancer Research shop during his retirement. He
had already begun organising this event when we actually lost a family member
to the horrendous disease, so this gives it all the more meaning. My dad is a
wonderful example to all and my boys are lucky to have him.
He opened a just-giving page (probably the most surprising achievement that
he managed to work out how, heehee) to try and raise some money for this
amazing cause.
