Strathgryffe Squash Player wins
European Junior Title
John Meehan, a member of
Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash
club won his first European
Junior Squash title, taking the
Boys Under 17 Nordic Junior
Open held recently in Malmo.
His performance in the quarter
finals was watched on a live
stream by many Strathgryffe
members, when John moved
into his first European tour
final, up against the U17 top
ranked junior in Europe and number 1 seed, another Czech player Marek
Panacek.
The final was again streamed live so Strathgryffe squash players, including
one in Miami, were able to see John in action as he attempted to bring a
European squash title to Houston for the first time.
Despite the best efforts of his opponent John had enough in the tank to take
the 3rd game 11-9 and with it his first European title. Not one to rest on his
laurels, the day after winning in Malmo John was back on court in Houston
passing on his skills as he took a squash camp for the next generation of
Strathgryffe juniors.
Kilmacolm Golf Club
Prestigious Scottish Event “Scottish Women’s County Finals” held at
Kilmacolm Golf Club
In mid-September, Kilmacolm Golf Club were delighted to host the Scottish
Women’s County Finals comprising the top four qualifying county teams in
Scotland playing against each other over 3 days. Two of our own members
Megan and Eilidh Briggs were in the Renfrewshire Team and the club
were delighted Renfrewshire qualified making it an even more exciting
tournament. In challenging weather, Aberdeenshire were worthy winners
just holding off the close efforts of the other three teams.
All teams highly praised the condition of the course and the warm welcome
received in the clubhouse. The Club were very grateful for the support of
all the volunteers and supporters for this prestigious event.
Kilmacolm Golf Club Ladies
On the Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September Romy Erskine made
her Scottish debut in a U16/14 friendly against Wales at Ratho Park. She
lost her Saturday morning foursomes match but bounced back to win her
afternoon singles and Sunday single match to be Scotland’s top point
scorer. Sadly the team lost but all the girls had a fantastic time.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
Thank you to all the ladies for their tremendous support of the Macmillan
Coffee morning that was held at the club on Friday 28th September. We had
some superb bakers from our ladies members and the final amount raised
was an amazing £856.26. Thank you also to Lynda Bradley, the kitchen
staff for the tea and coffee supplies and to our wonderful hostesses, Sylvia,
Carolyn and Netta, without them the event would never have happened.
Macmillan Cancer Support is such a worthwhile cause and we are delighted
we could take part in the Worlds Largest Coffee Morning.
Paisley Pirates
55
Paisley Pirates have
added a cosmopolitan
element to their team
with the addition of
three foreign players
to their ranks for the
Scottish National
Ice Hockey League
season. Austrian
Felix Huber, Finn Sami
Harju and Slovak
Karol Divok have all
been signed following
a change in the rules which now permit a maximum of two foreign players
in any match, the remainder of the team roster made up from the usual
local talent.
The club faces tough challenges at Braehead Arena in November with
the visits of Dundee Tigers on Sunday 4th November, Dundee Comets
the following Sunday (11th November) with Aberdeen Lynx providing the
opposition on Saturday 1st December. All Sunday matches commence at
5pm, with Saturday fixtures starting at 6.30pm.
Walk of Hope for Scottish
Huntington’s Association
On 15th
September
Margaret
Moncrieff and
friends did a
sponsored Walk
of Hope along
the banks of the
Clyde in Erskine
to raise funds
for Scottish
Huntington’s
Association
(SHA).
SHA is the only Scottish charity dedicated to helping people affected by
Huntington’s disease (HD). A diagnosis of Huntington’s can be devastating
news, meaning as it does that you will very gradually become more
dependent on care over the course of 15 to 25 years. In addition, it is
genetic and every child of a person with the condition has a 50% chance of
inheriting the disease. This means that other members of your family may
also develop the condition.
In layman’s terms HD is
like having motor neuron
disease, Parkinson’s and
elements of Alzheimer’s
– all at the same time.
While there is no cure,
there are now real
hopes of a treatment
but it will be many years
before these drugs are
available. Even once
treatment is available,
the families affected by
HD will continue to need
the support of SHA.
Donations to date
amount to £1,500 which
is a marvellous result.
Very many thanks to
all who contributed. As
ever, further donations
will still be welcomed
directly or at the following
