26 Bridge of Weir Primary School Thank you to everyone who came to parents’ night. It was good to share the children’s progress. In addition, your support at the Book Fair will help us buy exciting class novels. On the subject of books, all classes have been chatting with their teachers about their favourite authors and genres. Each class is to have a brand new reading corner, which we hope will encourage a lifelong love of reading. We’re looking forward to a visit from the Book Bus to help us choose new titles. And it’s that time of year again; the Christmas Fayre is on the evening of Thursday 22nd November. There’ll be stalls run by pupils and local businesses. Please come and support them all. Our school reporters have been busy this month. Here are their efforts: Macmillan Cake by Alice Ferguson (P7b) When pupil, Rebecca Paterson, heard people across Britain were hosting cake sales to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, she loved the idea and asked to hold one at school. She had lots of volunteers eager to help out. There was lots of preparation. Balloons and bunting were put up. Pupils brought lots of home baking, and the tables were soon covered with a delicious selection of home-baked cupcakes, brownies, pancakes, cookies, and flapjacks. The girls worked hard all day and raised a whopping £180.66. Well done to everyone who helped. Edinburgh Castle by Tristan Mills (P6) In October, both P6 classes went on a brilliant trip to Edinburgh Castle where they were able to see Mons Meg, one of the largest cannons in the world. It was massive! The pupils all said it was a great experience. They even got to stand in the very room where Mary Queen of Scots son, James, was born. Science Centre by Alexander Higgins (P4) Primaries 4, 5 and 7 were lucky enough to visit the Glasgow Science Centre for a special school trip. They went on the hamster wheel, played Mindball and even controlled solar panels! While they played at BodyWorks, they learned about organs in the human body, blood and heart rates, DNA, and stem cells. At Powering the Future, they learned about renewable and fossil fuels, electricity and light. The P4s even got to make batteries in a real-life lab. It was a great day, and everyone agreed they know lots more about science. Kilmacolm Playgroup Playgroup is enjoying a busy term of learning. We enjoyed the story of the Gingerbread Man and decorated our own gingerbread biscuits and made fantastic door hangers. We have also been looking at different modes of transport and we have been learning our road safety. We had our own Zebra crossing and the children took it in turns to be the lollipop person enforcing all our road safety rules. Playgroup is open to all children from 2 years 4months and operates on a Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 9.30am - 11.30am. Spaces available. Our baby & toddler group on a Wednesday 10am - 11.30am is open for all new parents /carers to drop in for a cuppa and a chat while your child enjoys a play. The Advertizer Duchal Nursery School We’ve had a really busy time recently. There’s been music, mud, water play, strolls in the park, arts and crafts and baking! We’ve been introducing the children to some classical music listening to Mozart and Berlioz. They loved making their own music, some loud, some quiet, some fast, some slow. Everyone was amazed at what different sounds can be made, and loved using the glockenspiels. We have even created our very own Duchal Marching Band! Our wonderful new “mud kitchen” has been a big hit and the children have spent lots of time in our garden being very imaginative and creative playing with it, as well as having lots of water fun with our new outside aqua flow and being arty on our new chalkboards. Madame, our French teacher, has been spending time introducing the children to French, and they all thoroughly enjoyed their French Breakfast. We are very lucky to have such talented staff with such diverse experiences which the children are really benefitting from. We can’t wait for our Halloween Fancy Dress Party on Saturday 3rd November, it’s on from 10.30am – 12.30pm and is open to all families with pre school children – come along for some spooky arts and crafts, Halloween games and lots of fun – we look forward to seeing your costumes!!. At playgroup, children have the opportunity to develop their social skills, independence, creativity, numeracy, literacy skills and many, many more….. What’s not to like, when all of this can be done through play! The children had great fun developing their creative skills by designing some lanterns for Halloween. They also showed enjoyment while experimenting with a range of malleable activities such as shaving foam and coloured spaghetti with hidden rats, spiders and some other spooky creatures. Do you have a child aged between 2.5yrs to 5yrs old? Then why not let them come along and experience the fun! Everyone welcome from Langbank and surrounding areas. Playgroup is held on a Friday morning (term time) in Langbank Village Hall and we currently have spaces for children aged 2.5yrs to 5yrs. November 2018 t: 01505 613340 e: info@advertizer.co.uk St Columba’s School, Kilmacolm World Renowned Artist Hosts Workshop We were delighted to welcome the world-renowned Artist and art educator Ian Murphy to the School. In addition to twenty four of our own artists we invited the Head of Art from Kelvinside Academy to join us with eight of her keenest pupils who participated in an engaging workshop hosted by the artist. Students were taught to consider how to hold the drawing tool and the kind of action each movement would make as a result. They learned how to prepare grounds, to add pictorial images whilst considering composition, to distress the paper, to add energy and movement to paper, to work in layers, to subtract and add again through a constant rhythmic process leading to the creation of confident and personal responses - a very productive and informative day indeed! Active-Learning Junior 3 have been studying ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’, by Jill Tomlinson. To further the children’s knowledge of British owls, they ventured to Muirshiel Country Park to learn about the appearance, sounds and habitats of the various owls to be found in Britain. All the pupils agreed it was the best trip they had ever been on! Junior 6 had a fantastic active-learning session to support their WW2 topic. They created Anderson shelters and gas masks and made sandwiches and scones for their VE Day tea party to which parents and grandparents were invited. The Gift of Giving In the lead up to the festive season, Junior School will be focusing on its charitable work, supporting the Renfrewshire Foodbank and the work of the charity Social Bite. Both charities support those in crisis and need in our own communities in Scotland. To support both of these charities, Junior School will be gathering foods for Renfrewshire Foodbank and Senior School will be collecting for Inverclyde Foodbank. Junior School children will be participating in the ‘Wee Sleep Out’, where the children will spend the night sleeping in the School. Whilst this is not outdoors, the Junior School Hall floor will give a small flavour of the discomfort felt by those who experience homelessness on a daily basis. With Christmas and the time of giving fast approaching, it is important to understand the importance of giving gifts rather than receiving. Christmas Fayre: Saturday 8th December, 2pm - 5pm - Community Event We are looking forward to hosting a Christmas Fayre at Senior School on Saturday 8th December from 2pm - 5pm. Entry to this family event is free and open to the wider community. If you or someone you know is interested in taking a stall please contact Kay Cameron on kcameron@st-columbas. org who will be happy to book a stall for you and discuss any requirements. The cost for an L-shape stall (180cm x 120cm) is £35 and we offer free stalls to charitable organisations. Open Days: Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th November, 9am - 3pm There is no better way to experience the true atmosphere of St Columba’s School than to come and see it for yourself. If you missed our Open Morning, you are most welcome to visit our Open Days on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th November from 9am - 3pm. Our open events provide the perfect opportunity to see our Early Years, Junior and Senior Schools in action.
