Habits
A habit is a routine or behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to
occur subconsciously. For example, brushing your teeth before you go to
bed or putting the kettle on when you go into the kitchen first thing in the
morning.
We are all creatures of habit, and we all have different ones. The only thing
we probably all have in common with them is that we all have some bad
ones we could afford to lose.
Bad habits are hard to break, here are my top 5 tips to help you potentially
break yours.
1. Understand. Understanding why we have bad habits in the first place is
important. A lot of them can be formed out of stress and/or boredom. Be
conscious about when a bad habit is happening and acknowledge how you
feel at that time.
2. Replace, don’t eliminate. You can’t just eliminate a bad habit, you
must replace it with a new one that provides a similar but healthier benefit.
For example, if you eat chocolate when you become stressed, it is almost
impossible to give that up. You need to insert a new habit to help handle it.
3. Start small. Be patient. Instead of making big dramatic adjustments, try
focusing on one habit at a time and take small improving steps to change it.
For example, you can’t go from having a chocolate biscuit with every cup of
tea to absolutely nothing – it won’t last long term. Try changing the biscuit
initially to something with less calories in it.
4. Remind yourself. When willpower fades we fall into our bad habits.
Often towards the end of the day when you could be at your weakest point.
Set reminders to avoid situations before it is too late.
5. Change your environment. Changing your route to work to avoid going
past the Starbucks or changing your walk round the office to avoid the
vending machine will help stop you gravitating towards them as you would
usually do. Avoid the triggers.
Everyone has their own habits, some good, some bad. Find the ones you
want to change and take the steps to do so.
