PAULA ABDUL<br />
Paula Abdul is a rare superstar.<br />
Despite her remarkable career,<br />
immense talents and global<br />
popularity, she is as accessible as<br />
she is iconic, as sweet <strong>in</strong> person<br />
as she is on TV and as authentic<br />
as she is extraord<strong>in</strong>ary. So it’s no<br />
surprise that her fans are ecstatic to<br />
see her first solo tour <strong>in</strong> twenty-five<br />
years.<br />
It’s been thirty years s<strong>in</strong>ce her first<br />
mega-hit, seven-time plat<strong>in</strong>um<br />
album “Forever Your Girl” captured<br />
us, with s<strong>in</strong>gles such as “Straight<br />
Up”, “Forever Your Girl”, “Cold<br />
Hearted”, and “Opposites Attract.”<br />
But Paula was no stranger to the<br />
enterta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>in</strong>dustry before<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g a mega-star. Her mother<br />
was a concert pianist and she<br />
studied ballet and jazz at a young<br />
age. While <strong>in</strong> college, she was a<br />
Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader,<br />
which led her to be discovered by<br />
the Jacksons. She was signed to do<br />
the choreography for the video to<br />
their s<strong>in</strong>gle “Torture” and eventually<br />
several videos for Janet Jackson and<br />
various other artists.<br />
Paula graciously made time for my<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview while rehears<strong>in</strong>g for her<br />
tour, f<strong>in</strong>e-tun<strong>in</strong>g every detail and<br />
prepar<strong>in</strong>g to perform for her excited<br />
fans.<br />

Japanese Anime Primer<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g the most out of Japanese story<br />
tell<strong>in</strong>g, its conventions and term<strong>in</strong>ology<br />
can be great fun but very confus<strong>in</strong>g. But for<br />
this primer, we will focus on the basics.<br />
Anime and Manga are actually two<br />
different storytell<strong>in</strong>g media. They both<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong> Japan, and are closely related,<br />
but are ultimately two different th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Anime which is literally "animation" when<br />
written as a loanword <strong>in</strong> Japanese) are<br />
Japanese animated cartoon videos. These<br />
air on television or are released to home<br />
video. Most people outside Japan use the<br />
term solely to refer to Japanese-orig<strong>in</strong><br />
series. Similar to Spongebob Squarepants<br />
or other American cartoons.<br />
Manga ("whimsical draw<strong>in</strong>gs") are Japanese<br />
comics similar to Spiderman. Manga are<br />
often used as the basis for anime so they<br />
are really now quite <strong>in</strong>terrelated and only<br />
the medium is differentiated<br />
Hentai ("pervert") is anime and manga<br />
pornography. But there are numerous<br />
subgenres of Hentai. For example a work<br />
depict<strong>in</strong>g lesbian sex might be described as<br />
"yuri hentai", but <strong>in</strong> Japan it would just be<br />
described as "yuri" and yaoi "male-male".<br />
These subgenres can be further classified<br />
with additional terms, such as heterosexual<br />
or homosexual types. Tentacle erotica is as<br />
you would expect a depiction of tentacled<br />
creatures and sometimes monsters<br />
(fictional imag<strong>in</strong>ative or otherwise)<br />
engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> sex.<br />
Bishōnen is Hentai that depicts young<br />
men whose beauty (and sexual appeal)<br />
transcends the boundary of gender or<br />
sexual orientation. Its roots stem <strong>in</strong> ancient<br />
Japanese literature, the homosocial and<br />
homoerotic ideal. The aesthetic of the<br />
bishōnen began as an ideal of a young<br />
homosexual lover. <strong>This</strong> is all significant<br />
because this medium is ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g popularity<br />
and LGBT acceptance <strong>in</strong> a world wide<br />
community. For American teens, they are<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ally see<strong>in</strong>g positive LGBT <strong>in</strong>fluences and<br />
queer character development.<br />

It's nearly<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g and some elections<br />
are not f<strong>in</strong>ished yet. The caravan is now<br />
mass<strong>in</strong>g on the border as the military<br />
moves <strong>in</strong> to protect us. But who will<br />
protect us from a battle force?<br />
We've been travel<strong>in</strong>g far<br />

We huddle close<br />
Hang on to a dream<br />
Its hard to th<strong>in</strong>k they want to <strong>in</strong>vade us,<br />
when it seems like they want to be us.<br />

thought this out, I say with a gr<strong>in</strong>. <strong>This</strong><br />
will surly prove an epic fail or and colossal<br />
mistake. For one, the military is not<br />

will be made by people with guns. The<br />
right is call<strong>in</strong>g it an <strong>in</strong>vasion, the left<br />
sees a humanitarian crisis. And it is a<br />
humanitarian crisis, just like separat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
families, homelessness, crime and drugs<br />
and LGBT suicide are all a crisis.<br />
No liberal I know advocates<br />
for open borders, but that does<br />
not make it a bad idea, just a different idea.<br />
But this President has made a bad mistake<br />
by characteriz<strong>in</strong>g liberals as OK with crime<br />
and open immigration and other Liberal<br />
Demonizations. Because it's not true and<br />
the truth aways comes out. Also, Donald<br />
Trump is a fool and should be ignored. He<br />
is a pro at unpaid publicity and advertis<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
And it earned him a base that cares more<br />
about what he says than what he does.<br />
Sadly, his base is conditioned to believe his<br />
lies are versions of the truth. And lots of<br />
them are actually racist, even though they<br />
are sure they are not.<br />
The Perils of Privilege<br />
“Privilege” when used as an accusation is<br />
nearly impossible to disprove. And a great<br />
way to brand the opposition <strong>in</strong>to a zero<br />
sum argument, as they say today. In my<br />
day it was the "When did you stop beat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
your wife?" question. But it also manifested<br />
racism and nationalism that lead to hate<br />
crimes.<br />
The Power of Inherited Advantage.<br />
The left needs to align itself with the center In order to w<strong>in</strong> them back from Trump,<br />
because people are never more likely to we have to get them power to see the<br />
change, or convert to new ways of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g real power they have. Its the long road<br />
or act<strong>in</strong>g, than when it means jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the and ignores th<strong>in</strong>gs like impeachment<br />

A true Hollywood yearly tradition, the<br />
parade attracts more than one million<br />
<strong>in</strong> attendance each year, with larger than<br />
life <strong>in</strong>flatable character balloons, award<br />
w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g bands, colorful equestrians,<br />
ornate floats, popular characters/novelties,<br />
celebrity filled cars and, of course, Santa<br />
Claus mak<strong>in</strong>g the much heralded trek<br />
down the over three mile parade route.<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g is one of the best-loved<br />
American holidays, one that often br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
back lots of memories. But this day would<br />
not be complete without the traditional<br />
DDG touch so lets have a go with this<br />
family tradition.<br />
Black Friday was used <strong>in</strong>1961 to describe<br />
the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and<br />
vehicle traffic that would occur on the day<br />
after Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the National Turkey<br />
Foundation, approximately 690 million<br />
pounds of turkey were consumed <strong>in</strong> the<br />
United States dur<strong>in</strong>g Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />
National Chicken Federation calls that a<br />
bold face lie and <strong>in</strong> fact they say Turkey<br />
causes more flatulence.<br />
Benjam<strong>in</strong> Frankl<strong>in</strong> proposed the turkey<br />
as the official United States bird, and<br />
was not happy when the bald eagle was<br />
chosen <strong>in</strong>stead. In Truth, the Turk’y is<br />
<strong>in</strong> comparison a much more respectable<br />
and edible. Thomas Jefferson called<br />
thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g ridicules and so Benjam<strong>in</strong><br />
Frankl<strong>in</strong> named the male turkey “Tom” to<br />
spite Thomas. Ah those were wild days of<br />
political rancor back then.<br />
Even J<strong>in</strong>gle Bells was orig<strong>in</strong>ally a<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g song but the pesky Christians<br />
took over it like everyth<strong>in</strong>g else and made<br />
it a Christmas song. There are rumors the<br />
Pikachu Day will be the newest religious<br />
holiday as there are 65 million Sunday<br />
followers. However a Pikachu does not taste<br />
like chicken its more like plastic<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce 1947 the National Turkey Federation<br />
has given the President a turkey every year<br />
as a gift and although it has usually ended<br />
up on the d<strong>in</strong>ner table, George H W Bush<br />
was the first president to officially offer it a<br />
pardon. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1970 protesters have gathered<br />
at Plymouth Rock to commemorate a<br />
“National Day of Mourn<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

Fabeyonce "Be Happy for You"<br />
I never thought that "Fabeyonce" would be a<br />
queen that got the opportunity to be known by<br />
many others, and honestly, I'm so grateful and<br />
excited to be work<strong>in</strong>g alongside many amaz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
enterta<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />
I work so hard every chance I get, when I'm on<br />
stage or at home putt<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g together<br />
for the next book<strong>in</strong>g, I remember be<strong>in</strong>g booked<br />
maybe once a month and I loved it. Now I'm<br />
booked at other venues and trust me, the feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is amaz<strong>in</strong>g. I do give thanks to everyone who<br />
has helped me along the way and that will never<br />
change.<br />
But one th<strong>in</strong>g that blows my m<strong>in</strong>d is how much<br />
my so-called friends have all changed. I try to<br />
look at this <strong>in</strong> two different m<strong>in</strong>d sets but I can't<br />
seem to understand. I support all my friends<br />
when they perform and drive a distance to see<br />
them when I'm not perform<strong>in</strong>g or work<strong>in</strong>g my<br />
job and I have fun do<strong>in</strong>g so. I hang out with all<br />
of them. It's the same as we always do.<br />
But now it seems like many have become bitter<br />
with me and tend to not want to be happy that<br />
I'm gett<strong>in</strong>g out of one spot and perform<strong>in</strong>g at<br />
other venues out of town and do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />
push<strong>in</strong>g myself to be known and just do<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
damn thang.<br />
I th<strong>in</strong>k the issue is that I'm such a positive<br />
person and I let them know that work pays<br />
off and it's <strong>in</strong> the best <strong>in</strong>terest to keep mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
forward and many don't know how to. I say<br />
to all my friends be the best you can be and<br />
don't let anyone tell you different. Be you be<br />
tough and don't ever worry about what others<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k, that's what I do. But I guess not everyone<br />
is the same and not everyone is built to keep<br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g ahead. Whenever my friends get the<br />
opportunity to perform at venues around, I'm<br />
thrilled for them and like, girl your gonna slay<br />
the stage and they’re gonna love it. But that's just<br />
me. I know where I came from and I know how<br />
it feels to be nervous enter<strong>in</strong>g a place you've<br />
never worked, and the crowd doesn't know<br />
you. The best th<strong>in</strong>g to do is give them what they<br />
came for, "A Show". No turn<strong>in</strong>g back. Lights on,<br />
music play<strong>in</strong>g, you come <strong>in</strong>, do your number,<br />
say thank you and you’re done.<br />
When do<strong>in</strong>g what you love, it’s the best feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ever. When your <strong>in</strong>vited to go out of town and<br />
share what you do with others who are gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to know who you are, is like butterflies <strong>in</strong> your<br />
tummy and they don't stop mov<strong>in</strong>g around. To<br />
all my girls, work hard, play hard, be respectful,<br />
and be true to who you are. Don’t be a follower,<br />
be a leader. That's what's needed more than ever.<br />

THE ART OF THANKSGIVING -<br />
DON'T TALK POLITICS<br />
Don't allow Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g to leave you <strong>in</strong><br />
a fowl mood, although this is the primary<br />
food of this holiday. The rule is don't talk<br />
politics dur<strong>in</strong>g Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>This</strong> year is<br />
especially contentious follow<strong>in</strong>g the midterm<br />
election. And for Native American<br />
people, they are still be<strong>in</strong>g persecuted<br />
as demonstrated <strong>in</strong> the North Dakota<br />
election as the Republican North Dakota<br />
Congress implemented a new law prior to<br />
the election prevent<strong>in</strong>g Native Americans<br />
from vot<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
In 1939, there were two Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
President Frankl<strong>in</strong> Roosevelt moved<br />
the holiday from the last Thursday of<br />
<strong>Nov</strong>ember to the second to last. He did<br />
this to give retailers an extra <strong>week</strong> for<br />
Christmas shopp<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>This</strong> is a move<br />
that Republicans would f<strong>in</strong>d positive<br />
today. However, due to the antipathy the<br />
Republicans had of Roosevelt, 32 states<br />
refused to change the date of the holiday<br />
call<strong>in</strong>g it a Republican holiday that needed<br />
to rema<strong>in</strong> on the traditional date. It wasn't<br />
until 1941 that Roosevelt signed <strong>in</strong>to<br />
law that the official date of Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
would be the second to the last Thursday<br />
of <strong>Nov</strong>ember.<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g is the most orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
American holiday. Traditionally the<br />
President pardons two turkeys for<br />

have to see how this goes for him. His<br />
family is known for shoot<strong>in</strong>g turkeys and<br />
other wild animals and Trump himself<br />
has noth<strong>in</strong>g to do with animals, and they<br />
with him. recall the video of the bald<br />
eagle attack<strong>in</strong>g him at his desk? Animals<br />
have a clever sense of what <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
people are all about. . Trump’s table<br />
centerpiece last Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g was a large<br />
claim shell stuffed with what one reported<br />
said, looked like "hurricane wreckage".<br />
Anyway, if Mueller has his way it may not<br />
be just the turkeys need<strong>in</strong>g a pardon.<br />
Let us hope that follow<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g, next year will be a better<br />
one with a political scene where our<br />
Representatives and Senators are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
together for the benefit of all people and<br />
we have a President that is aware of the<br />
basic needs of people not just his personal<br />
selfish priorities.<br />

How does it feel to be tour<strong>in</strong>g<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>?<br />
Right now, I’m just try<strong>in</strong>g to put<br />
the last m<strong>in</strong>ute touches and tweaks<br />
on the show. I’m at a dance studio<br />
rehears<strong>in</strong>g with the dancers. I really<br />
enjoyed tour<strong>in</strong>g last year with New<br />
Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men,<br />
so I thought it’s time to do a show<br />
and reconnect with my fans.<br />
With an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary career<br />
that <strong>in</strong>cludes two multi-plat<strong>in</strong>um<br />
albums, six #1 s<strong>in</strong>gles, two<br />
Grammy Awards, five MTV<br />
Awards, four American Music<br />
Awards, two Emmy Awards,<br />
two People’s Choice Awards,<br />
a Teen Choice Award and two<br />
Kid’s Choice Awards. Is there<br />
less pressure on you now as a<br />
performer or more so because of<br />
your icon status?<br />
I th<strong>in</strong>k the pressure is more from<br />
me to do a great show, you know<br />
most of the dancers are almost<br />
half my age, so I have to be <strong>in</strong> top<br />
shape.<br />
What made you decide to do this<br />
tour?<br />
It was time to go back on the stage<br />
and do what I love. You know, at<br />
the height of my career, I had to Tell me about your fans.<br />
disappear for seven years to recover They are great, you know, I so<br />
from a plane crash. I was tour<strong>in</strong>g grateful and lucky to have people<br />
and it was toward the end of my who have been with me throughout<br />
tour, we were leav<strong>in</strong>g St. Louis to my career, so I wanted to do this<br />
go to Denver on a 7-seater private show and connect with them aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

So I spent seven years gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
better, than this show came along,<br />
American Idol. In fact, I had one<br />
of my surgeries while judg<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
American Idol.<br />
Millions have been your fans<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of your<br />
career, and whole new younger<br />
generations love you from<br />
American Idol too. Did you<br />
have to focus on a particular<br />
demographic when plann<strong>in</strong>g your<br />
show?<br />
When I was record<strong>in</strong>g and do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
shows, I had a very diverse<br />
demographic fan base. Then I<br />
had an accident that forced me to<br />
disappear for seven years. Then<br />
came this show, American Idol, and<br />
I got a whole new wave of young<br />
fans, so it’s cyclical.<br />
What can audiences expect to see<br />
<strong>in</strong> the show? Any surprises?<br />
They get to see a great show, have<br />
fun and a good time. I do a mix of<br />
retro stuff that people like but also<br />
new material too.
Get Out! is the premiere LGBT<br />
magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the greater New<br />
York area, so I would be remiss<br />
if I didn’t ask you about your<br />
gay fans.<br />
I wouldn’t have my career if it<br />
wasn’t for my gay fans. I have<br />
always been very close to the<br />
community, as a dancer, a<br />
choreographer and musician. They<br />
have been there with me through<br />
thick and th<strong>in</strong> and stayed with<br />
me, always loyal. I love the (gay)<br />
community.<br />
Do you miss American Idol?<br />
American Idol was a great<br />
experience, even with the<br />
dysfunctional family that we were.<br />
I had a great time with Simon<br />
Cowell, Randy Jackson and all the<br />
talented people that came through<br />
the show. You know I never had<br />
a big brother, so I learned a lot<br />
from Simon. He taught me how<br />
to go deeper and be strong. I was<br />
always strong, but he helped me a<br />
lot. In fact, we had a m<strong>in</strong>i reunion<br />
a couple of <strong>week</strong>s ago at Simon’s<br />
house.<br />
Should we look forward to a new<br />
album <strong>in</strong> the near future?<br />
I’m wait<strong>in</strong>g to see the response to<br />
this tour and how th<strong>in</strong>gs turn out,<br />
so maybe. I’m start<strong>in</strong>g to work on a<br />
few th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Tell me a secret-a good one!<br />
I know, I have a huge fear of<br />
elevators. I th<strong>in</strong>k because I was<br />
stuck <strong>in</strong> one with my mother when<br />
I was a little girl. What happens is<br />

my assistant and started laugh<strong>in</strong>g<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>, all of sudden a heard a voice<br />
say, “Paula?” I turned around and<br />
it was my dad half way around the<br />
world, at the same hotel and at the<br />
same time.<br />

<strong>in</strong> Riverside County. Your participation<br />
<strong>in</strong> this survey will benefit veterans like<br />
yourself by help<strong>in</strong>g Riverside County<br />
develop better support systems to help you<br />
access the services that you and your fellow<br />
veterans need and have the right to.<br />
The survey should take only about 10<br />
m<strong>in</strong>utes to complete. We encourage you to<br />
answer all the questions, but you should<br />
feel free to skip any questions that may<br />
make you feel uncomfortable.<br />

experience, knowledge and use of veterans’<br />
benefits, your health and access to<br />
health services, health risks, and overall<br />
