That is how it happened for me, the
mechanized scooter folly can now be
recorded in the history books and in 100
years from now, it will be allowed in the
Texas school books and in 1000 years they
may return to Palm Springs. Maybe I have
hope that a compromise can be found.
During the rigorous training that consisted
of a 3 minute power point, it was QA
time. I had not heard the city make any
statement about these. One suck up said
the city is really fast to address safety issues
licensing and what not. The answer was
simply that all was OK and dammit, that
was good enough for us. Now let us play
with the scooters!
"At 9 pm start capturing birds, charge
them over night. At 4 am start releasing
them. Thats about it. Any questions."
Nope! Now we grabbed the scooters and
collectively didn't tell anyone. Some of us
teased it to Facebook. The city woke to a
horror story. 20,000 scooters littered the
city, one story said. It was 200. There will
be massive accidents and severe injuries.
Probably a child will be killed or mauled.
They demanded the City restore sanity.
No injuries reported and kids cannot rent
them. By 9pm we stared collecting them.
Then for me, THE disaster. 4am wake up? I
quit my job at Planet Bingo writing gaming
software because they wanted me there at
7am.
there is no quiting in a gig. Like UBER, just
stop doing it.
So we seemed to have been caught napping
for about 2000 years. Hello! Hey, we should
be planning for the one constant called
"change". 2000 years ago, changes took a
few hundred years. Now, its more like a few
hundred minutes.
Big PR gamble or Classic Coke debacle,
perhaps Bird has done us a favor by
getting everyone ready for a future that is
inevitable.
From what I learned, I recommend the
following areas be considered for approval.
• Taxing, licensing, and insurance that
will not significantly increase the ride
cost.
• Limiting the total numbers of each
company and increasing over time.
• Mapping the town to set up go or
no-go zones, including as less traffic
side streets, schools and other areas
that might track vandalism or the
under 18 group.
• Escalating civic penalties for bad
behavior
• Adding a novice mode that limits new
users the scooter under a certain speed
and used as a penalty for misuse of
some aspects, like no go zones.
With luck, we will be able to live to see the
future we want and keep the past we want
