The summer months have a number
of events around the UK featuring
Spanish horses but the most significant
are without doubt the UK National
Breed show for PRE horses held in late
July, and the UK National PRE Basic
Evaluations held in late August.
The National Breed Show was the 3rd
organised by the recently created
organisation, GBPRE, who are following
in the footsteps of 30 years of National
Breed Shows organised by the British
Association for the Purebred Spanish
Horse (BAPSH Ltd).
This year the Breed Show provided
a large range of Dressage classes
regulated by three different governing
bodies, ANCCE, British Dressage, and
MCI; plus ANCCE Morphology classes,
Ridden Showing classes, and trial
classes for the Spanish disciplines of
Doma Vaquera (Cowboy Dressage)
and Alta Escuela (High School). Sadly
there were no Show Jumping classes
which disappointed exhibitors and
spectators who have really enjoyed the
excitement of these classes in the past,
especially the very popular ‘Horse and
Hound’ jumping class.
The ANCCE Morphology classes
which are qualifiers for the World
Championships in Spain (SICAB
November 2018) were not strongly
supported this year, with just 25
owners entering 43 horses for the
judge, Jose Ramon Fernandez Villegas,
to assess. After 2 days morphology
(conformation and in-hand movement)
and functionality (ridden movement)
judging, the major Championship titles
were awarded approximately 50/50
between imported horses and Britishbred
PREs.
PRIMADONNA (above), a 12yr old grey
mare bred at Rocky L Stud, Oxon, won
the National Champion Mare title for
her owner Christine Reale of Spiritosa
PRE Stud, which follows on from her
2017 and 2016 Reserve Champion Mare
titles.
The 2018 Reserve Champion Mare was
another grey, 4yr old JARETA XAENERA,
bred and owned by Jo Jarrett of the
long established Jareta PRE Stud in
Monmouthshire. Junior Champion
Colt went to BACCHUS NSHL, bred
and owned by Mrs Nadia Lister, with
Dorset based studfarm Yeguada Lago,
The 2018 National PRE Basic Grading
for Breeding Approval was held in mid-
August at the centrally located Unicorn
Trust, Stow-on the Wold, and organised
as usual by BAPSH Ltd. This was the
33rd annual PRE Grading held in the
UK and there were 39 horses entered
for assessment ranging from 3 years 1
month to 9 years 5 months in age.
Four horses withdrew resulting in 9
stallions and 26 mares presented for
detailed inspection over 3 days by
the Spanish Grading Delegate, Pablo
Rivera. It was unusual to have only
4 Spanish-bred horses presented for
Evaluation with the remaining 30 horses
bred by British Studfarms; a really
pleasing indication of the recovery of
PRE breeding across Britain after the
economic crash 10 years ago.
Highest marks for Breed Quality(8/9)
and Harmony (8/9)went to Spanishbred
3yr old Perlino filly BECA VINYET
owned by Mrs Eileen Brooks of the CR
Stud, established 30 years ago. This is
an unusual achievement for one of the
rarest colours and Beca will be put in
foal in 2019 to a bay CR Stud homebred
stallion.
