The summer months have a number<br />

of events around the UK featuring<br />

Spanish horses but the most significant<br />

are without doubt the UK National<br />

Breed show for PRE horses held in late<br />

July, and the UK National PRE Basic<br />

Evaluations held in late August.<br />

The National Breed Show was the 3rd<br />

organised by the recently created<br />

organisation, GBPRE, who are following<br />

in the footsteps of 30 years of National<br />

Breed Shows organised by the <strong>British</strong><br />

Association for the Purebred Spanish<br />

Horse (BAPSH Ltd).<br />

This year the Breed Show provided<br />

a large range of Dressage classes<br />

regulated by three different governing<br />

bodies, ANCCE, <strong>British</strong> Dressage, and<br />

MCI; plus ANCCE Morphology classes,<br />

Ridden Showing classes, and trial<br />

classes for the Spanish disciplines of<br />

Doma Vaquera (Cowboy Dressage)<br />

and Alta Escuela (High School). Sadly<br />

there were no Show Jumping classes<br />

which disappointed exhibitors and<br />

spectators who have really enjoyed the<br />

excitement of these classes in the past,<br />

especially the very popular ‘Horse and<br />

Hound’ jumping class.<br />

The ANCCE Morphology classes<br />

which are qualifiers for the World<br />

Championships in Spain (SICAB<br />

November 2018) were not strongly<br />

supported this year, with just 25<br />

owners entering 43 horses for the<br />

judge, Jose Ramon Fernandez Villegas,<br />

to assess. After 2 days morphology<br />

(conformation and in-hand movement)<br />

and functionality (ridden movement)<br />

judging, the major Championship titles<br />

were awarded approximately 50/50<br />

between imported horses and <strong>British</strong>bred<br />

PREs.<br />

PRIMADONNA (above), a 12yr old grey<br />

mare bred at Rocky L Stud, Oxon, won<br />

the National Champion Mare title for<br />

her owner Christine Reale of Spiritosa<br />

PRE Stud, which follows on from her<br />

2017 and 2016 Reserve Champion Mare<br />

titles.<br />

The 2018 Reserve Champion Mare was<br />

another grey, 4yr old JARETA XAENERA,<br />

bred and owned by Jo Jarrett of the<br />

long established Jareta PRE Stud in<br />

Monmouthshire. Junior Champion<br />

Colt went to BACCHUS NSHL, bred<br />

and owned by Mrs Nadia Lister, with<br />

Dorset based studfarm Yeguada Lago,<br />

The 2018 National PRE Basic Grading<br />

for Breeding Approval was held in mid-<br />

August at the centrally located Unicorn<br />

Trust, Stow-on the Wold, and organised<br />

as usual by BAPSH Ltd. This was the<br />

33rd annual PRE Grading held in the<br />

UK and there were 39 horses entered<br />

for assessment ranging from 3 years 1<br />

month to 9 years 5 months in age.<br />

Four horses withdrew resulting in 9<br />

stallions and 26 mares presented for<br />

detailed inspection over 3 days by<br />

the Spanish Grading Delegate, Pablo<br />

Rivera. It was unusual to have only<br />

4 Spanish-bred horses presented for<br />

Evaluation with the remaining 30 horses<br />

bred by <strong>British</strong> Studfarms; a really<br />

pleasing indication of the recovery of<br />

PRE breeding across Britain after the<br />

economic crash 10 years ago.<br />

Highest marks for Breed Quality(8/9)<br />

and Harmony (8/9)went to Spanishbred<br />

3yr old Perlino filly BECA VINYET<br />

owned by Mrs Eileen Brooks of the CR<br />

Stud, established 30 years ago. This is<br />

an unusual achievement for one of the<br />

rarest colours and Beca will be put in<br />

foal in 2019 to a bay CR Stud homebred<br />

stallion.<br />
