Spring has finally sprung and as we look<br />
forward to brighter days, our attention turns<br />
to outdoor life which is reflected in much of<br />
our community section this month.<br />
Easter marks a significant time in the church<br />
calendar and in the community section you<br />
can find all the details of the annual carrying<br />
of the cross through <strong>Norden</strong> village to Knowl<br />
Hill which takes place on Palm Sunday,<br />
14th <strong>April</strong>.<br />
Save <strong>Bamford</strong> Greenbelt held their protest<br />
march on Saturday 2nd March and on pages<br />
72 and 73 there are some great photos of<br />
this very important event. Please read the<br />
article as residents are urged to get involved<br />
and support this vital community cause.<br />
GREAT NEWS – after four years and a huge<br />
amount of hard work, Friends of Heritage<br />
Green have finally succeeded in protecting<br />
the Green as a recreational space for the<br />
local community and Mark Hope writes all<br />
about it on pages 74 and 75.<br />
There are some important ‘Friends of<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong>’ events listed on page 82 and<br />
another significant date for your diary is the<br />
annual <strong>Norden</strong> Carnival which this year takes<br />
place on Saturday 15th June. Theme to be<br />
announced in the next issue, if you would like<br />
to get involved you will find all the details on<br />
page 65.<br />

Heywood Tanks Waged<br />
War on the Winter Hill Blaze<br />
The West Pennines Area of the Military Vehicle<br />
Trust (MVT) is proud to have an association with<br />
Heywood Tanks, a group of enthusiasts who not<br />
only have some interesting military machines,<br />
but also have ideals that include helping others<br />
where they can. Steve Garrett, a mechanic in<br />
the Army who volunteers with Heywood Tanks,<br />
describes the organisation as having a “Moral<br />
Compass”. Dale Haigh, the inspiration behind<br />
Heywood Tanks, simply shrugs his shoulders<br />
and says, “You know when something needs<br />
doing and when it’s right to help - We just get<br />
on with it.”<br />
Cast your mind back to the evening of 24th<br />
June when fire crews tackled a fire on the<br />
Saddleworth moors. The next day the fire<br />
reignited and rapidly escalated, Greater<br />
Manchester Police declared it a major incident<br />
and evacuated a number of residents from<br />
their homes. Support was drafted in from fire<br />
and rescue services across the UK, helicopters<br />
were deployed as were soldiers from the Royal<br />
Regiment of Scotland (4 SCOTS).<br />
Thursday 28th June, the same day 4 SCOTS<br />
were deployed on Saddleworth Moor, a fire<br />
broke out on Winter Hill and fire crews from<br />
Greater Manchester joined Lancashire Fire and<br />
Rescue Service to fight the fire. The incident<br />
escalated and was declared a major incident<br />
by police on Saturday 30th June.<br />
Needless to say, the fire service was stretched<br />
in many directions! Heywood Tanks wanted to<br />
offer their help, but how do you contact the fire<br />
service without ringing 999?<br />
Steve Garrett said, “We decided to offer our<br />
help after seeing the fire-fighters on the NEWS,<br />
crossing the moors with 20 litre knapsacks and<br />
pumps. We have a metal box on tracks, capable<br />
of carrying 2,000 litres of water and getting<br />
pretty much anywhere on the moors, and after<br />
much investigation, we were finally able to<br />
contact Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to<br />
offer our help.”<br />
At this stage the fire had been blazing for<br />
around two weeks, leaving the ground<br />
smouldering and burnt. The group sent a<br />
Shielder, which was then equipped to carry<br />
2,000 litres of water and pumps, to help with<br />
the operations.<br />
Steve continues, “We went up on Friday 6th July<br />
and were there until Wednesday 11th July.<br />
The fire crews really appreciated it, and I<br />
enjoyed helping them out. The fire service was<br />
absolutely fabulous, they looked after us and<br />
were really enthusiastic about the Shielder,<br />
which they fuelled up and agreed to cover the<br />
cost if there was any damage. Everyone was<br />
keen to get on board to get the job done.”<br />

“It’s hard to describe the level of heat exhaustion.<br />
The physical heat was tremendous and the<br />
destruction on the moor was like a scene from<br />
the Somme. The ground was cracking from the<br />
heat and in places it was like walking on a<br />
barbecue, fire hoses, which are made of sturdy<br />
stuff, would melt into the ground!”<br />
Steve believes using the Shielder made a<br />
significant difference to fighting the fire, “It was<br />
an honour and a pleasure to have taken part. It<br />
was nice to see the area get behind everyone;<br />
local businesses brought food and water, which<br />
was well received. Mountain Rescue Teams and<br />
other organisations got involved and I’ve had<br />
the pleasure of working with some exceptional<br />
fire-fighters from many stations all over<br />
the country.”<br />
Whilst the management to extinguish the fire<br />
was well planed, Steve passionately believes<br />
the fire-fighters job was hampered by the lack<br />
of suitable equipment for the task in hand,<br />
“These days it seems there’s more specialist<br />
equipment, required for such tasks, in private<br />
ownership.” Steve wonders if organisations like<br />
the MVT might be able to keep an asset register<br />
of equipment people are willing to offer in<br />
the event of an emergency. I guess MV owners<br />
would have to balance registering their pride<br />
and joy (and the money they’ve invest in their<br />
hobby), against having their vehicle detailed on<br />
a register that emergency services could easily<br />
access to understand what’s available<br />
(capabilities and so on), where it’s available<br />
and how quickly it could be deployed.<br />
No doubt there are other issues, like insurance,<br />
damage, providing suitably qualified personnel,<br />
etc. However, having a register of equipment<br />
that could be deployed quickly seems a<br />
suggestion worthy of further discussion.<br />
Perhaps we should open up the debate?<br />

Rhubard & Custard Loaf Cake<br />
INGREDIENTS<br />
160g butter<br />
190g caster sugar<br />
3 eggs<br />
1.5 tsp vanilla essence<br />
3 level tbsp custard powder<br />
200g self raising flour<br />
45g soured cream<br />
50g crystallised ginger<br />
275g forced rhubarb<br />

METHOD<br />
1. Oven gas 3 or 170°c. Line a 900g loaf tin with parchment paper.<br />
2. Cut some of the rhubarb into lengths to fit the width of the<br />
tin, cut the rest into chunks 2cm long. Toss all the rhubarb in<br />
30g sugar and set aside.<br />
3. Beat the butter and remaining sugar until light in colour, beat<br />
in the eggs one at a time. Beat in the vanilla essence, custard<br />
powder and a pinch of salt and fold in the soured cream.<br />
Fold in the flour and chopped rhubarb. Reserve the longer<br />
pieces and juices.<br />
4. Pour into the prepared tin and level the top. Place the rest<br />
of the rhubarb on top and sprinkle with the finely chopped<br />
ginger if desired.<br />
5. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 10 mins until cooked through. Test<br />
with a skewer. Cover lightly with foil if the top is browning too<br />
much after 50 minutes. Cool in tin for ten minutes then carefully<br />
lift onto a wire rack until cold – keep upright.<br />
6. This cake needs eating soon after it is made. Store in an<br />
airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days or cut into slices, wrap<br />
individually and freeze for up to a month.<br />

The Cross is a Plus!<br />
At school I used to dread the teacher marking my work and putting a cross (X) in<br />
my workbook. After all, I had tried so hard to get it right. The good effect it had on<br />
me was that I wanted to get the right answer all the time, but it didn’t feel good<br />
when I got it wrong. And, of course, I didn’t want to make the teacher cross, did I?<br />
Then when I grew old enough to vote I thought it funny that I had to put a cross (X)<br />
– rather than a ‘tick’ - on the ballot paper next to the person I wanted to win.<br />
So some people find it odd that the main symbol used by Christians is a cross (+),<br />
and, when you think about it, is even odder that it’s a reminder of one of the most<br />
painful forms of death invented by the human race – Crucifixion.<br />
Once again, this year a group of Christians from local Churches will carry a cross<br />
through <strong>Norden</strong> on Palm Sunday (14th <strong>April</strong>) and, weather permitting, put it on<br />
Knowl Hill. So why a cross? Christians believe that, in dying on a cross at the<br />
hands of mankind, Jesus offered all our wrong-doing to God and forgave us, so<br />
that we may be truly freed from all the errors we have made in this life. (While<br />
dying He said, “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they do!”) Had that<br />
been the end of the story, we could be mistaken, but Jesus rose from the dead<br />
(which is what we celebrate at Easter) and promised everyone the opportunity of<br />
freedom today and eternal life after our natural death.<br />
Of course, all religions ask the question, “why are we here?” and rightly<br />
encourage people to respect God and do what is right (in spite of some of the<br />
horrors carried out in the name of religion). Only the Christian faith claims to offer<br />
God’s free forgiveness for those who ask Jesus for it. And millions know the<br />
freedom of that forgiveness.<br />
You see, the Cross shows us a plus sign “+”; where we can think of the vertical<br />
part showing God’s love coming down to us, and the ‘cross bar’ showing how we<br />
need to reach out in love to help and forgive one another. Perhaps you wear a<br />
cross - it’s not a “good luck charm”, but a real reminder that God loves you and<br />
has a purpose for your life.<br />

Save <strong>Bamford</strong> Greenbelt<br />
Over 400 Residents Protest Against Plans<br />
to Develop on <strong>Bamford</strong>’s Greenbelt<br />
Over 400 <strong>Bamford</strong> residents came out<br />
in force, in a co-ordinated month of<br />
protests across Greater Manchester to<br />
oppose the GMSFs plans to develop<br />
on Greenbelt Land.<br />
Children, Pets, & adults met on the Village<br />
Green in <strong>Bamford</strong> and then walked with<br />
their banners and loud hailers across the<br />
targeted publicly accessible Greenbelt land<br />
that has been ear marked for development<br />
for 450 executive homes. This is the 3rd<br />
march in 2½ years since the first draft was<br />
released and is abundantly clear that the<br />
anger and passion hasn’t wavered in<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> to stop this development.<br />
Prior to the start, Sean Clowes, Chairperson<br />
of the Save <strong>Bamford</strong> Greenbelt, appealed<br />
again that if residents want to stop this, they<br />
must take their opportunityto have their say<br />
by submitting their concerns on the GMSF<br />
consultation portal.<br />
Since the public forum the SBGB committee<br />
have secured meetings with Andy Burnham<br />
along with the head of Rochdale council<br />
Alan Brett and local MP Liz McInnes. Each<br />
of the meetings has been productive<br />
however the communities need the<br />
evidence that the elected members are<br />
doing everything in their power to represent<br />
the public who voted for them to avoid the<br />
loss of any Greenbelt land. There is still a<br />
way to go but at least the groups are now in<br />
dialogue which is starting to feel more like<br />
a consultation process.<br />
There are stillmany concerns over the 2nd<br />
draft plans especially around the base<br />
forecast 2014 ONS figures which are<br />
controversially being used instead of the later<br />
2016 version which reflect a significantly<br />
lower forecast population increase.<br />

Adopting the 2016 statistics would<br />
potentially negate the need to develop on<br />
any Greenbelt sites and is major focus<br />
across the groups, which has now invoked<br />
a Government petition to be raised.<br />
Further to this there is also a complete<br />
scientism and lack of evidence that<br />
brownfield or urban development sites<br />
have been fully exhausted and that the<br />
councils are doing everything in their power<br />
to support this. A recent study by one of the<br />
members of SBGB committee has<br />
uncovered a further additional 12 sites that<br />
may suitable and has now been provided to<br />
the local MP.<br />
Finally there is the issue of availability<br />
currently Peel Holdings own only 1/3 of the<br />
land on the <strong>Bamford</strong> development site with<br />
the rest being owned by local landowners,<br />
one of those David Mills whose family have<br />
farmed the land for over 100 years and<br />
recently addressed residents at <strong>Bamford</strong>s<br />
open forum advising that he and his family<br />
hadn’t asked for this and don’t want it. They<br />
feel under constant threat that potentially<br />
compulsory purchase may be invoked.<br />
This scenario has been put forward to each<br />
of the above leaders all of whom have<br />
indicated that CPO should not come into<br />
play in circumstances were peoples homes<br />
and livelihoods would be impacted who<br />
don’t want to sell. However, in the absence<br />
of a firm commitment the future for these<br />
residents is still uncertain, we have<br />
requested from Andy Burnham for firm<br />
policy to be implemented within the GMSF<br />
that would protect people’s homes and<br />
livelihoods from CPO.<br />

HERITAGE GREEN ON THE<br />
MAP AND ON THE GREEN<br />
After over 4 years, the Friends<br />
of Heritage Green have finally<br />
protected Heritage Green as a<br />
recreational space for the benefit<br />
of the local community.<br />
Mark Hope, a spokesman of the<br />
Friends of Heritage Green said:<br />
”It has been a very exciting few months,<br />
after campaigning long and hard,<br />
everything has finally slotted in to place.<br />
“On 17th October 2018, we attended<br />
Rochdale Council’s “Full Council<br />
Meeting” in the chamber at the Town<br />
Hall, chaired by the Mayor in all his<br />
finery, to witness the Council voting<br />
to register Heritage Green as a<br />
Village Green.<br />
“On 6th February <strong>2019</strong>, Heritage Green<br />
was finally entered in to Rochdale<br />
Council’s register of Town and Village<br />
Greens, making it official that Heritage<br />
Green had been saved and protected<br />
for the long term.<br />
“Yesterday (Wednesday 27th February<br />
<strong>2019</strong>), a marker in the form of 2<br />
millstones and a plaque was installed<br />
by Rochdale Council to commemorate<br />
registration as a Village Green. The<br />
marker looks great and literally marks<br />
the final chapter in our journey to save<br />
and protect Heritage Green for present<br />
and future generations of men,<br />
women, children and animals from<br />
<strong>Norden</strong>, Caldershaw and other nearby<br />
neighbourhoods to enjoy.<br />
“I visited this morning to admire the<br />
marker and spoke to about a dozen<br />
interested and grateful residents who<br />
were walking their dogs, going to<br />
school and generally getting on with<br />
their day on and alongside the playing<br />
field. It filled me with great pride that<br />
we had come so far and achieved so<br />
much and I will glance at the marker<br />
every time I go by and think –<br />
‘We did that!’<br />

Mark summarised how the journey<br />
had come to an end by explaining<br />
what made Rochdale Council finally<br />
register Heritage Green as a Village<br />
Green:<br />
“The land was compulsory purchased<br />
by the Council, along with surrounding<br />
land, for building council houses in the<br />
1950’s and Rochdale Council could<br />
have used the land for Council housing<br />
or alternatively laid it out as a proper<br />
managed recreational space but did<br />
neither and instead we, the community,<br />
without the stated permission of the<br />
Council, used the open space for our<br />
pleasure and recreation for decades<br />
and in so doing have earned the right to<br />
continue using it in just the same way.<br />
“Whilst this has all been terribly<br />
complicated, and taken forever, the<br />
simple truth is that the field is a<br />
community recreation facility and<br />
should always stay as just that and<br />
by using it and fighting for it, the<br />
community has ensured that it will.<br />
“I would like to thank all members of<br />
the Friends of Heritage Green,<br />
interested members of the community,<br />
local businesses, the local media,<br />
MP Liz Mcinnes, the 3 Ward<br />
Councillors, Mike Holly, Jim Gartside<br />
and Peter Winkler, Council Officers<br />
and Rangers who have assisted with<br />
the maintenance and development of<br />
Heritage Green and the installation of<br />
the marker and anybody else that has<br />

years curator of the Titanic in Lancashire Museum.<br />
His talk will cover the building of the Titanic, and a<br />
detailed look at the sinking and its aftermath.<br />
When the Titanic was launched it was said to be ‘almost<br />
unsinkable but in the early hours of <strong>April</strong> 15th<br />
1912, whilst on her maiden voyage, the passenger<br />
liner Titanic collided with a gigantic iceberg in the<br />
Atlantic Ocean. The sinking of the Titanic produced<br />
worldwide shock and outrage.<br />

The Brownie Pack needs new leaders.<br />
This is a very rewarding volunteering<br />
position and is full of fun!<br />
The 3 current leaders have over 80 years’<br />
experience in Guiding between them but due<br />
to other commitments have to finish in July.<br />
We do not want this pack to close. <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Chapel currently has Rainbows (girls 5-7)<br />
and Guides (girls10-14). Rainbows start the<br />
guiding journey, the girls move into Brownies<br />
and then progress to Guides. Closure of the<br />
Brownie pack would affect both of these<br />
groups.<br />
The current leaders will give any help needed<br />
and no previous experience is necessary.<br />
By becoming a Brownie leader you can<br />
share your passions and skills with the girls,<br />
empowering them and giving them new<br />
experiences. You become a role model and<br />
help girls to realise their full potential.<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />
50g butter<br />
3 carrots – peeled and grated<br />
2 shallots – chopped fine<br />
1 clove garlic<br />
Small knob fresh root ginger - chopped<br />
100g mashed potato<br />
2 eggs<br />
50g Creamy Lancashire cheese<br />
200ml tomato passata<br />
4 leaves fresh basil – shredded<br />
25ml crème fraiche<br />
To Serve<br />
A selection of summer vegetables,<br />
blanched:- Fresh peas, Broad beans<br />
Carrot and Creamy<br />
Lancashire Timbale<br />
Makes 4 Ramekins<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Heat the butter and sweat off the carrots, garlic, shallot and<br />
ginger for 5 minutes until softened.<br />
2. Add the potato, eggs and cheese – mix well and season.<br />
3. Line ramekin dishes with food wrap and fill the ramekins with<br />
the mixture then cover.<br />
4. Bake in a bain marie 180ºc for 20 minutes.<br />
5. Heat the passata, basil and crème fraiche.<br />
6. Warm through the vegetables.<br />
7. When ready to serve – un-mould the<br />
timbales onto plates, spoon around the<br />
sauce and top with the market vegetables<br />
– It’s a summer sensation.<br />

Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Following the Annual General<br />
Meeting in February, Friends of<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> now have plans in place<br />
for what we hope to do in <strong>2019</strong>.<br />
First though, an update on the plans for the<br />
Community Garden at the back of <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Green, which is best summed up as ‘no change<br />
yet.’ Environmental Management at RMBC<br />
have helped us with detailed plans of what<br />
we want to do, and are currently applying for<br />
funding on our behalf, to get at least the basic<br />
clearing of the site, path laying etc, done, but<br />
the Council wheels turn slowly, so at the<br />
moment no change. Watch this space.<br />

Great Spring-clean and Litter<br />
pick around the Green Belt.<br />
There has been much activity concerned with<br />
Save <strong>Bamford</strong> Green Belt recently, but rather<br />
less so about looking after it in the first place.<br />
The undergrowth and hedges have recently<br />
been cut back, and a shocking amount of litter<br />
exposed. Public spirited members of the public<br />
are already helping to collect it, as are Bridge<br />
Football Club, but we hope to clear all of it by<br />
a concerted effort on the 6th of <strong>April</strong>, before<br />
the undergrowth grows back and hides it for<br />
another year. Please spare an hour to help,<br />
many hands make light work, and let’s return<br />
this precious resource to the way it should be.<br />
Meet on <strong>Bamford</strong> Green, 10.30am, we will go<br />
ahead unless it is absolutely pouring down, in<br />
which case, same time, same place following<br />
week, or first fine Saturday.<br />

decided.) ‘Allo ‘allo versus Eyup!<br />
Bowling Club, with competing teams<br />
representing Rochdale and Tourcoing. We<br />
hope to expand this to include a French<br />

food, possibly fancy dress, so you don’t have<br />
to be on a team to attend. Onion sellers and<br />
Clogs and Flat caps welcome! Details are yet<br />
to be worked out, but if you would like to be<br />
included in either the Bowling or Boules teams,<br />

Green Belt Protest Walk, so <strong>Bamford</strong> Dog<br />
Walkers are going to hold a fun dog show since<br />
there are so many. Nothing serious, Waggiest<br />
tail, simple agility, recall alley, fastest Bonio<br />
eater etc. Date to be decided.<br />

Details to be discussed, but probably involving<br />
Kids Fancy Dress, Treasure Hunt etc. On<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> Green, with POSSIBLY also something<br />
in <strong>Bamford</strong> Bowling Club in an evening.<br />

We have already booked the Brass Band again<br />
for this growing-in-popularity Community Event,<br />
