IF ANGKOR WAS A MASTERPIECE SYMBOLISING THE ANCIENT KHMER
CIVILISATION AT THE PEAK OF ITS PROSPERITY, TONLE SAP WOULD BE A
CREATION BY GODS WITH ITS OWN ANNUAL NATURAL CYCLE. THIS VAST BODY
OF WATER, LOCATED SOUTH OF SEAM REAP, HAS BORN SILENT WITNESS TO
THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ANCIENT CITY FOR OVER A MILLENNIUM.
Henri Mouhot, the famous French
explorer who traversed the great
lake on his way to Angkor in the 19 th
century, likened the lake to a violin
on the plains of Cambodia. The neck
of the violin is the Tonle River that
connects the lake with the Mekong
River.
Tonle Sap hosts a natural
phenomenon that unfolds annually
right from the meeting point of the
Tonle and the Mekong Rivers.
In the rainy season when the
Mekong overflows its banks, the
Tonle River plays a role in siphoning
the overflow of water from the
Mekong River into the lake. The lake
is like a big reservoir stretching as
far as the eye could see. In times of
drought, the water from the lake will
flow back into the Mekong River for
automatic replenishment so that the
river’s water levels are not dropping
too low. This cycle of mutual
replenishment happens annually.
Travelling to Tonle Sap from
Siem Reap is quite easy. A taxi ride
for 20-30 minutes will get one to a
pier where visitors need to travel by
boat for another 20 minutes along
a narrow waterway before reaching
the lake and the fishing village of
Chong Khneas, one of the floating
communities in Tonle Sap.
Tonle Sap is home to dozens of
big and small floating communities.
Each community is like a city where
people live on boathouses or rafts
in the middle of the lake. Chong
Khneas boasts a fish market, shops
and an ice-making factory, a petrol
station, a battery-charging shop,
a church, temples and schools.
Visitors might want to take
another boat ride for one hour
to another attraction: Prek Toal
Bird Sanctuary right in the middle
of Tonle Sap. The lake not only
sustains people’s lives but those of
waterfowl and birds as Southeast
Asia’s main stopover station for
migrating birds.
Those who don’t enjoy taking a
boat ride may want to travel by car
for 40 minutes to Kampong Phluk,
another must-go destination in
any Tonle Sap tour. Accessible by
road, Kampong Phluk is a village
set on the shores of the lake. In the
rainy season, the road is completely
flooded. Locals live in houses built
on stilts, which are rightfully the
real attraction of the village.
Tonle Sap is a natural wonder
that continues to draw tourists
from near and far.

提 琴 把 亦 是 连 接 此 湖 和 湄 公 河 东 南 部 的
河 道 , 并 被 称 洞 里 河 。
在 洞 里 河 与 湄 公 河 的 交 汇 处 , 便 是
洞 里 萨 湖 的 奇 妙 现 象 的 起 始 。
在 丰 水 期 , 湄 公 河 泛 滥 , 洞 里 河 运
载 巨 大 水 量 向 西 北 流 入 至 洞 里 萨 湖 ,
形 成 一 望 无 际 的 水 域 , 直 到 旱 季 , 洞
里 河 便 会 回 流 , 带 着 巨 大 水 量 流 至 湄 公
河 , 让 湄 公 河 不 过 于 干 涸 , 而 这 种 彼 此
交 换 且 施 肥 滋 养 的 循 环 , 每 年 都 不 断
的 发 生 。
要 到 洞 里 萨 湖 旅 游 也 是 轻 而 易 举 之
事 , 从 暹 粒 出 发 仅 需 20-30 分 钟 路 程 ,
再 转 乘 汽 船 约 20 分 钟 , 您 将 遇 见 辽 阔
的 水 域 和 宗 克 尼 港 的 渔 村 , 亦 是 洞 里 萨
