through <strong>Norden</strong> Village and the three<br />
day Rochdale Harriers event on the 7th,<br />

I am delighted to be your Labour Candidate for<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> ward in the local election on 2nd <strong>May</strong><br />
I am a father of two children who have both attended local schools, I’m a local businessman and I’m a parent<br />
governor at Matthew Moss High School. I have strong links with the community, and I Know the high<br />
standards the community expects from me.<br />
As a good listener, I will take your concerns to the Council, standing up for the residents of <strong>Bamford</strong>,<br />
Broadhalgh,Brimrod, Oakenrod, Marland, Oulder Hill & Sudden.<br />
Since being selected I have been talking to people in <strong>Bamford</strong> and Oakenrod. I strongly support the “Save<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> Green Belt” Campaign “. I joined in the protest march on 2 March <strong>2019</strong> and subsequently met<br />
members of the hard working campaign committee. Whilst the reduction in the new houses to be Built from<br />
750 to 450 is welcome it is still not acceptable as the focus should be on developing brownfield sites and<br />
protecting the ever diminishing sports facilities, especially the football pitches which are essential in keeping<br />
our children healthy. Along with the Labour action team I will continue to lobby the Council and the GM<br />
<strong>May</strong>or Andy Burnham who visited <strong>Bamford</strong> last year.<br />
I will continue to support residents along with Senior Labour<br />
Councillors on issues including<br />
• The ongoing serious parking issues around the shops at Oulder Hill and the surrounding streets.<br />
• The fight to keep the path between Rochbury Close and Northdene Drive pedestrian only.<br />
• The number of increased Burglaries, traffic problems and anti-social behaviour and the effect the<br />
reduction on police officers is having in dealing with the largest reported crime increase in a decade.<br />
• Safety issues on the footpath near Pegasus Court<br />
Last year the Council funded<br />
• Improvements in Highway maintenance including the resurfacing of Midge Hall and Oulder Hill Drives<br />
with more to come.<br />
• Investment in clean and Green Teams to deal with “Grot Spots” and removing rubbish.<br />
• A Traffic Survey costing £5000 around Sandy Lane, Bury Rd and Roch Valley Way to look at a potential<br />
Pedestrian Crossing.<br />
• The very popular, successful and prize winning “In Bloom” initiative which brightens up <strong>Bamford</strong> and<br />
<strong>Norden</strong>. I am delighted that in the Local Labour Manifesto just launched commits to Investing £1 Million to<br />
extend Clean and Green Teams and to continue with “In Bloom” initiatives” despite savage cuts to<br />
Rochdale’s funding by the Tory Government<br />
Remember in 2018, Labour came very close to beating the Conservatives in our ward. I need your support<br />
to achieve a swing to win this year. For far too long 3 <strong>Bamford</strong> Conservative councillors have rested on their<br />
laurels while ignoring some serious issues in our ward.<br />

appear. The exact same thing is happening with government underfunding of<br />
Council services. I will always stand up for your public services and public servants.<br />
WHAT I HAVE TO OFFER<br />
• Most of my working life has been spent as a public servant. If elected, I will serve<br />
all of the residents of the ward to the best of my ability.<br />
• On your behalf I will maintain a constant scrutiny of Council services to ensure<br />
the highest possible standards.<br />
• I will bring a fresh pair of eyes to look for solutions to problems that never seem<br />
to get solved – such as speeding vehicles through the village and on the estates.<br />
• I will be a strong Labour voice in a Labour Council and make sure <strong>Norden</strong> –<br />
including Caldershaw, Red Lumb, Birtle and Ashworth - gets its fair share<br />
of resources.<br />

From The Archives<br />
A FEW LOST ROCHDALE SHOPS<br />
Those who can remember the variety in<br />
the streets of towns in the North West<br />
will look back fondly to a time when<br />
Rochdale’s Yorkshire Street and Drake<br />
Street offered something distinctive and<br />
different to the streets of Bury or Oldham.<br />
I could have picked Diggle and Taylor<br />
or Stock Liquidators, Lovick’s or Jimmy<br />
Duck’s, but I’ve gone with shops<br />
I remember with some affection.<br />
Iveson’s<br />
Standing in Drake Street, this store was<br />
architecturally unmissable with the tower of<br />
the Trafalgar Buildings at the corner of Nelson<br />
Street. Founded in 1810 Iveson’s vied with the<br />
Co-op across the road in attracting footfall into<br />
town for its domestic ware, its furniture and<br />
carpets. Iveson’s was thought to be the classier<br />
store of the two, possibly because it was a<br />
family concern, and was prominent in the<br />
promotion of its goods through the Observer.<br />
At its height the store employed 62 people<br />
from warehouse staff to shop assistants and<br />
office staff. Its range of goods was impressive,<br />
at one time shoppers being able to view an<br />
entire furnished bungalow in the store with<br />
over 4000 prospective shoppers coming in to<br />
see it. Not only did Iveson’s sell household<br />
fixtures but it carpeted many of the cinemas<br />
in town, equipped company boardrooms and<br />
furnished the <strong>Norden</strong> Riviera dance hall and<br />
picnic areas in 1936.<br />
The last of the Iveson family Anne (then<br />
Slater) and John oversaw the closure of the<br />
store in 1984, Anne having worked first as a<br />
cashier and eventual owner. She was with the<br />
company for over 49 years. The building was<br />
demolished in 2013.<br />
Senior’s<br />
On the corner of Yorkshire Street and Baillie<br />
Street, Senior’s provided family clothes for<br />
generations. In 1919, the founder Sydney<br />
Senior had previously rented rooms above<br />
Wild’s gent’s outfitters but started to sell made<br />
to measure men’s suits for those demobbed<br />
from the army. He made a success out of<br />
small beginnings and by 1921 was able to buy<br />
out Wild’s and open the shop under his own<br />
name. Maintaining its sewing rooms, it soon<br />
became known for its bespoke tailoring and its<br />
eye for the latest fashions. So successful was<br />
Senior’s that the premises were extended to<br />
form a large store from three smaller ones.<br />

Joining the business in 1958, Anthony Senior<br />
carried on the family tradition of producing<br />
quality clothes. By 1960 the company expanded<br />
and to meet the fashions of the day set up a<br />
ready-to-wear department on site. However,<br />
by 1999 the menswear department which had<br />
been at the heart of Seniors closed down and,<br />
on Anthony Senior’s retirement in 2001, so too<br />
the ladieswear section.<br />
Redman’s<br />
Situated on Yorkshire Street, Redman’s<br />
was one of the main grocery competitors to<br />
James Duckworth’s although its provisions<br />
were distinctive and different. A large store,<br />
Redman’s seemed to be specialists in cooked<br />
meats and that smell was the first thing that<br />
hit you as you entered the shop. It was a smell<br />
which was carried through the store and into<br />
a large café that was a meeting place for many<br />
shoppers in Rochdale.<br />
But Redman’s had certain products for sale<br />
that other shops didn’t have. I remember there<br />
being wire baskets containing what were<br />
promoted as ‘continental foods’ where you<br />
could find such strange delicacies as<br />
chocolate ants (goodness knows what they<br />
were !) and frogs legs which came in small<br />
sardine-type tins and which tasted of chicken.<br />
Haworth’s<br />
One of the most prominent spots for a shop<br />
in Rochdale was on the South Parade just<br />
around the corner at the bottom of Drake<br />
Street. Owned by three generations of the<br />
same family, Haworth’s operated from this<br />
site for many years with the first Haworth,<br />
Edwin, opening ‘The Toggery’ in 1896 to sell<br />
menswear. Edwin was joined by his son<br />
Alfred in the company, expanding the shop<br />
over the years by taking over adjoining<br />
premises and setting up new and different<br />
departments – even launching a popular<br />
ladies hairdresser’s. The store sold both<br />
men’s and women’s clothes and at their<br />
height was the place to go if you wanted<br />
quality clothes in town. Geffrey Haworth<br />
continued the business after the war but<br />
Manchester shopping in the 1960’s and<br />
the rise of a new youth culture with which<br />
Haworth’s never really kept up, led to the<br />
shop’s decline. Haworth’s was eventually<br />
sold in 1984, falling between two stools in<br />
terms of its size - it was neither big enough<br />
as a department store nor small enough to<br />
maintain trade as a local specialist retailer.<br />
With the prospect of an ever-bigger shopping<br />
centre at the heart of Rochdale and the rise of<br />
on-line shopping, it could be said that the days<br />
of the independent family store are over. That<br />
might be the case, only the names remaining<br />
of a town with ‘local shops for local people,’ a<br />
phrase that has sadly become only a sit-com<br />
joke. However, let’s hope for distinctiveness,<br />
style and shops that reach out to Rochdale<br />
with our future new shopping centre.<br />

Great British Spring Clean<br />
Volunteers from around<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> turned out in force<br />
with litter pickers at the<br />
ready for the annual <strong>Norden</strong><br />
Great British Spring Clean on<br />
Saturday 23rd March.<br />
This year’s clean-up, part of the Keep<br />
Britain Tidy campaign, was once again<br />
hosted by the Friends of <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee<br />
Park, who have held the event for the<br />
last four years.<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park, St Paul’s Parish Hall/<br />
Blackpits, Greenbooth Road, Red Lumb,<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> Village and behind Ashbourne<br />
Nursing Home, were all treated to a<br />
good old-fashioned spring clean by<br />
local residents and volunteer groups<br />
such as, Friends of <strong>Norden</strong><br />
Jubilee Park, Birtle Trust, Friends of<br />
Rooley Moor Road, Friends of Heritage<br />
Green, NEEVA <strong>Norden</strong> Environmental<br />
& Economic Village Association, The<br />
Friends of Ashworth Valley, Horse and<br />
Farrier, Rochdale In Bloom, and<br />
Streetwise Magazines.<br />
Other groups involved in the clean-up<br />
covered Birtle, Caldershaw, Ashworth<br />
Valley and Rooley Moor.<br />
After some hard work tidying the<br />
village, volunteers were treated to a<br />
well-earned bacon sandwich at The<br />
Old Library Community Cafe, where<br />
Jo Hallett prepared food and hot drinks<br />
free of charge.<br />

Bridge who will tell us what L S Lowry was really like<br />
from her own artist’s perspective.<br />
LS Lowry (1887-1975) studied art at night school<br />
whilst working as a rent collector. His work is<br />
associated with “matchstick men”, but he also painted<br />
landscapes, portraits and surreal images. A very<br />
private man he turned down honours on 5 occasions<br />
and was often seen as an enigma.<br />
This is the last of this year’s season. We will have a<br />
short break until September and announce details of<br />

Lamb cutlets with a red<br />
wine and redcurrant jus<br />
Served with crushed Jersey Royals, pea puree and green beans<br />
Ingredients - Serves 2<br />
4 small lamb cutlets – trimmed and<br />
bone partly exposed<br />
1 sprig Rosemary finely chopped<br />
125mls red wine<br />
½ lamb stock cube<br />
1 tbsp redcurrant jelly<br />
Salt and black pepper<br />
½ teaspoon butter and ½ tsp plain flour<br />
made into a paste- beurre blanc<br />
To serve<br />
200g Jersey Royal potatoes, boiled<br />
and lightly crushed<br />
100g frozen peas, + 10g butter<br />
75g steamed green beans, broccoli<br />
or spinach<br />
Method<br />
1. Dip the trimmed lamb cutlets into the chopped rosemary and pan fry<br />
in a hot frying pan for 3-4 minutes each side to brown.<br />
2. Place in an ovenproof dish and place in the oven at 170 °c gas 4<br />
for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cover. Leave to rest.<br />
3. Meanwhile wash and boil the potatoes and peas for 10 -15 minutes.<br />
Puree the peas and lightly crush the potatoes.<br />
4. Place red wine, redcurrant jelly and lamb stock in a small saucepan<br />
and reduce by half by gently boiling. Add a teaspoon of the beurre<br />
blanc and whisk in well. Add more if a thicker consistency is required<br />
or a little cooking water to make it runnier. Season with salt and pepper.<br />
5. To serve: Place the crushed Jersey Royals on a plate, spoon the pea<br />
puree next to them (if this is too stiff add a knob of butter and a little<br />
cooking water), Arrange the cutlets on top along with the extra<br />
vegetables and trickle the jus around the edge. Serve piping hot<br />
– if necessary place in the microwave for 1 minute until steaming.<br />

On a cold wet Sunday last October, Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong> volunteers braved the elements to plant<br />
Daffodil bulbs on <strong>Bamford</strong> Green. Well done, volunteers!<br />
Bowls/Boules Social Evening<br />
We now have a firm date for the above event, which is Friday, 14th June, time to be confrmed,<br />
but starting early evening, at <strong>Bamford</strong> Bowling Club, organised jointly with Friends of Turcoing<br />
group. <strong>Bamford</strong> Bowling Club have, obviously, a beautiful bowling green round the back, but<br />
turns out they have a Boules pitch as well! Who knew?<br />
It will be a knockout competition, teams of 2 will play short matches against another team of 2,<br />
at both, or either, bowls or boules, until eventually there is a winning team from each, who will<br />
then play each other at both sports. Simples!<br />
Total beginners at both sports are welcome, it’s just a bit of fun, and all you need is a partner.<br />
Equipment will be provided, and food will be available, either a barbeque if it’s a fine evening, or<br />
in the clubhouse if not. This is a perfect opportunity to try your hand at something new, you never<br />
know, you might have a hidden talent, and even if you havent, we expect it to be a fun evening.<br />

NORDEN WI FOUNDED MAY 1999<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> WI began after several women had<br />
made enquires to Lancashire Federation of<br />
Women’s Institutes at events they had<br />
attended in the Lancashire and Lake District<br />
areas where the WI had a presence.<br />
Several meetings were held at Butterworth Hall in<br />
Milnrow, advertised in the Rochdale Observer, with<br />
two Voluntary organisers for the Federation, Mrs<br />
Muriel Deal and Mrs Margaret Davies. It soon became<br />
apparent that most of the ladies were from the<br />
<strong>Norden</strong>, <strong>Bamford</strong> and Shawclough areas so a further<br />
meeting of interested ladies was advertised and a<br />
planning meeting was organised at St Pauls Church<br />
Hall in <strong>Norden</strong> on7th April 1999.<br />
Six ladies agreed to serve as committee members<br />
- Mrs Heather Williams, Mrs Rosemary Nunwick,<br />
Mrs Jackie Barber, Mrs Jackie Harrison, Mrs Lillian<br />
Lunn and Mrs Margaret Slade. We were told all<br />
about setting up a WI, the ‘committee’, the Lancashire<br />
Newsletter Hotpot, Subscriptions - £14.50, holding<br />
meetings and an AGM.<br />
There were enough members to get a WI started and<br />
our first official meeting was held on <strong>May</strong> 5th 1999.<br />
Twenty six ladies attended and a speaker Mrs Netta<br />
Brodick, the Editor of Hotpot, gave us an interesting<br />
talk about a holiday spent in a horsedrawn caravan<br />
in Southern Ireland. Mrs Deal and Mrs Davies agreed<br />
to be joint presidents until our AGM in October. Mrs<br />
Williams was appointed as secretary, Mrs Nunwick –<br />
Treasurer, Vice president- Mrs Slade, Mrs Harrison<br />
was our press officer and Mrs Harrison our<br />
speakers hostess.<br />
The second meeting on June 2nd was opened with<br />
the singing of the first verse of the WI anthem<br />
JERUSALEM, unaccompanied. Eighteen fully paid up<br />
members and eight prospective members attended.<br />
The speaker was Mr White, an ex police officer who<br />
gave an interesting talk about his interest in Walking<br />
Sticks. Refreshments of tea/ coffee and biscuits were<br />
served and a raffle for <strong>Norden</strong> WI funds was held.<br />
The business part of the meeting informed us of<br />
events that were happening in the Lancashire<br />
Federation which all members could apply to attend.<br />
A group Meeting of local WI’s- Shuttleworth in<br />
Ramsbotton, Greenmount and CockeyMoor and<br />
Longsight had been attended by some members<br />
and they were made very welcome.<br />
The next two months meetings saw our membership<br />
grow to twenty seven members and seven visitors<br />
and included a talk about a Trip to Japan and a<br />
Bodyshop demonstration. In October we held an<br />
AGM for <strong>Norden</strong> WI.<br />
A record of the last meeting is read at each meeting<br />
for approval by the members and then signed as<br />
a correct record. At the AGM the President gives<br />
a review of the year’s events and highlights and a<br />
financial report is presented. At our first AG meeting<br />
we had £545.50 in the bank from Membership fees<br />
and raffles and expenses were £41.35.<br />

An Independent Financial Examiner is also appointed<br />
to audit our accounts. The business also included the<br />
ballot for a President and committee members.<br />
The committee then appoint a treasurer, secretary,<br />
refreshments host etc from their midst. The<br />
committee consisted of eight members as we moved<br />
forward. The year 2000 was LFWI’s 80th Year and<br />
several events were taking place starting with a<br />
service at Blackburn Cathedral and jamboree at<br />
Houghton Tower<br />
As the years have rolled on members have listened<br />
to speakers and Demonstrators on all sorts of<br />
subjects, cookery demonstrations, hanging basket<br />
demonstration, flower arranging, painting<br />
demonstrations and sessions where we could have<br />
a go, meals out, parties, fashion shows, talks on<br />
reflexology, meetings about the resolutions put<br />
forward at the National AGM,the history of<br />
magistrates courts, games evenings, quizzes, pets<br />
as therapy, food additives, Jewish family life, food<br />
tasting evenings, history of Uncle Joes Mintballs,<br />
trips to the theatre, annual craft and produce show<br />
in Garstang, etc. We always open our meeting with<br />
Jerusalem, have the minutes read and approved,<br />
listen to LFWI business and items sent through from<br />
NFWI. We enter teams into the Annual LFWI fun quiz<br />
and send a delegate to the annual meeting of LFWI.<br />
We tend to enjoy a meal out in January, an annual<br />
trip out for members to places like Chatsworth,<br />
Leighton Hall, Blackwell in the Lake district Renshaw<br />
Hall where some of us encountered Barry Humphries<br />
aka dame Edna Everedge and we celebrate<br />
our birthday.<br />
We have recently raised over £600 to go towards the<br />
cost of a commemorative Bench for <strong>Norden</strong> Village.<br />
It will be placed outside <strong>Norden</strong> Old Library for<br />
members of the public to use. The council have<br />
match funded this project and will maintain it for us<br />
over the next 10 years. A big thank you to all<br />
our current members and supporters.<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> WI were also represented at the Armistice<br />
Day Parade at <strong>Norden</strong> Cenataph- some of you will<br />
have seen our contribution of a hundred knitted and<br />
crocheted poppies on display. We walked in <strong>Norden</strong><br />
Carnival as well dressed as Calendar Girls!<br />
The motto for the WI is INSPIRING WOMEN – it used<br />
to be FOR HOME AND COUNTRY, both bringing women<br />
together and forming friendship and community spirit<br />
in our individual areas. I have been a member from<br />
1999 and thoroughly enjoy all I get involved with.<br />
I have always said that you get out of the WI what you<br />
are prepared to put in and I do hope any women in<br />
this area of Rochdale will feel they can be part of our<br />
organisation and join with us to contribute and get<br />
out of it what they want. We currently have a Craft<br />
group, Walking group and outings group in addition<br />
to our Monthly meetings which are held at Cutgate<br />
Baptist Church on the first Wednesday of the month.<br />
We meet at 7.30pm for a 7.45pm start and meetings<br />
last 1.5 to 2 hours. 2020 is LFWI’s Centenary and we<br />
are proud to be a part of this organisation. Please<br />
come along and join us – see if you like what we do<br />
