Milnrow Wellbeing 

& Yoga Festival 2019 

MILNROW PARK - SUNDAY 21ST JULY 

In July this year the village of Milnrow will be 

holding it’s very own Wellbeing and Yoga Festival 

in the very picturesque Milnrow Memorial Park. 

In partnership with Friends of Milnrow Park, Root 

to the Soul, Ellen Kay Yoga and the International 

Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM) the event 

is the first of its kind for Milnrow and is designed 

to bring awareness of all things wellbeing to the 

many visitors expected on the day. 

So, what can visitors expect? 

Firstly, a fantastic setting for the event. Milnrow Memorial Park is situated adjacent to Newhey 

Road and has lots of green space and is well blessed with a myriad of well-established trees 

which will all be in full leaf when the event takes place on Sunday 21st July. The area will be 

decorated with many colourful Tibetan style prayer flags that local Primary School children 

have decorated to give the whole site a real festival feel. 

As the event name suggests, the Festival will incorporate Yoga and this will consist of 

timetabled sessions throughout the day, carried out by professional yoga teachers, for both 

seasoned yogis and for those who are curious and would like to try a taster session, these 

sessions will be available for all ages and will be carried out on the grassed area of the park. 

Running alongside these sessions will also be Pilates sessions, again delivered by a qualified 

tutor and again, these will be for existing practitioners and those curious types who would like 

to try a new exercise. There will also be opportunities to sample different types of exercise and 

keep fit with a range of activities including Tai-Chi, Zumba, boot camp and a Ladies only gym. 

What about food and drink? 

There will be a variety of food available to enjoy on the 

day and in keeping with the theme of the event this 

will consist of delicious Vegan and Vegetarian menus. 

We are welcoming Los Antojitos who will be providing 

delicious Mexican Street food, Dough & Co who will be 

serving their range of wood fired oven pizza and Dirty 

Franks, delicious and unique hot dogs. For the sweet 

tooth, Vegan cakes will be available from Bee Kind 

Bakery and Sally’s Bakes. Delicious tea and coffee will be 

provided by the wonderful Bloc, look out for their bright 

yellow Land Rover. 

Along with providing opportunity for fitness, the main theme of the Festival is wellbeing, 

therefore, there will be a range of holistic therapists on hand including The Buddha Hut, 

The Therapy Rooms and Root to the Soul to provide Reiki, Reflexology, Massage, Indian Head 


Massage and more, again, all carried out by experienced 

and qualified therapists. Also, on hand and available to offer 

advice and services will be Hydro therapists, nutritionists, 

mindfulness coaches and meditation experts. 

There will also be the chance to take part in the very unique 

art of Chakradance, a wellbeing practice using music, dance 

and moving meditations to heal and balance the chakras. 

Is there anything for the younger 

visitors? 

Of course. There will be a Woodland Treasure Hunt, face painting and a chance for them, 

courtesy of Gordon Rigg Garden Centres, to take a plant pot, some compost and get their 

hands dirty planting their own vegetable plant or flower. Also, on hand will be face painting, 

a dance troupe and Zen Children’s Mindfulness. 

There will also be many varied retail stands at the event selling a wide range of holistic themed 

gifts including yoga cushions, clothing, soya candles, art, crystals, essential oils from Neals 

Yard, personalised gifts and organic skin care products from Tropics and Weleda. 

Other areas of the festival will be a relaxing chill out zone where visitors can take a break from 

the sessions, have a drink, something to eat, mingle and chat with old and new friends and 

just enjoy the atmosphere of the event. It is hoped that we will have a local singer, Taylor Dee, 

available to keep us entertained with some soulful acoustic songs. 

Admission to the event is free and is open to visitors from 10am on Sunday 21st July.

It’s Been a Hard 

Day’s Night!

You would be forgiven if you had 

thought this story was about to lead 

into another discussion on Brexit. 

Fortunately you would be wrong. 

A recent news item has reported the 

discovery of, in Mexico, a reel of film 

footage depicting the first ever live showing 

of the Beatles on ‘Top of the Pops’. Which 

got me thinking about Rochdale’s connection with the ‘Fab Four’ 

and various other artists. 

‘Town Meadows‘, now home of the Police Station, was once the 

site of the Circus and Hippodrome Theatre, the venue for popular 

music hall and circus acts of the nineteenth century. Years after the 

demise of the Theatre, Beatles’ song writer, John Lennon, spotted 

a poster in a second hand shop, from 1843. The Pablo Fanque 

Circus Royal poster was the basis of the song ‘For the Benefit of Mr 

Kite’ which is featured on 

the Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ 

album. It is rumoured that 

the original poster is in the possession of Yoko 

Ono and is possibly the only one still left in 

existence. So check your lofts- if you find one it 

might be worth a few quid. 

Walking towards the Old Post Office, past the 

Cenotaph, if you glance to your left across the 

well manicured (whispering) grass lawns, you’ll 

see the ‘Town Flats’ where Don Estelle off ‘It Ain’t 

Half Hot Mum’ and Bill Oddie’s (The Goodies) 

Mum both once lived. 

A bit further on, after the Town Hall on your right, 

you will see ‘Our Gracie’ who was recently 

described as the ‘Madonna’ of her time.

Moving swiftly on and walking over the Bridge, you will approach the Regal Moon where 

you’ll find a connection with the Iconic 70’s Band ‘10cc’ The next time you’re in 

Wetherspoons and your at the bar, look up at the piano player and cast your eyes across 

to the former Picture House balcony to a musical stave with the words “ From Rochdale 

to Ocho Rios” this is the title of a song on their (10cc) best selling album ‘Bloody Tourists’ 

(excuse the language) the song represents the Group’s description of their travels from 

when they lived in Bamford and journeyed to and from their recording studios in Dorking 

and Ocho Rios a town in Jamaica. 

Coming out of the pub and turning left past the Riverside building 

and the new shopping development, look down past Mecca Bingo 

towards its car park where you will find the site of the Cubi-Klub, all 

now disappeared into the mists of time, this Rochdale version of the 

Liverpool Cavern once boasted the famous Rolling Stones, however, 

only two members managed the trip to Rochdale and the gig was 

infamously cancelled. 

A quick skip and a hop onto Water Street 

then turn left up Baron Street, then 

halfway along you’ll come to Kenion Street 

on your right, with a blue plaque showing 

the building used to record famous 

Manchester bands of the eighties such 

as ‘Joy Division’ and ‘The Fall’. 

About turn and you’ll see another plaque 

telling you where Grace Stansfield, ‘Our 

Gracie ‘once lived. Which brings me onto 

probably our most famous modern day 

recording artist - Lisa Stansfield. But you’ll 

have to get the bus up Edenfield Road to 

view her former house. 

I hope you have enjoyed our ‘musical 

mystery tour ‘ around Rochdale and if 

you’re hungry for more present day events 

look no further than a short walk into the 

Town Hall Square where you will find the 

yearly venue for the August Feel Good 

Festival, sporting many different groups 

that cater for a kaleidoscope of musical 

tastes. ‘We hope you do enjoy the show!’

Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group 

Take a walk over Whitfield to Dunwood, 

an area of Newhey and Shaw, that is 

the subject of SAVE THE GREENBELT 

campaign. 

This is a moderate walk, with some lengthy 

inclines; ascents and descents; some stiles, and 

some not well waymarked field paths. OS Map 

OL21 or A to Z Newhey to Shaw covers the route. 

Have suitable walking shoes or boots, and clothing 

to protect you depending upon weather 

conditions. A hiking pole, and mobile phone are 

worth taking, as well as a camera to record images 

of this area of outstanding beauty. 

THE ROUTE 

Leaving the Library entrance, turn left and proceed 

along Newhey Road, under the motorway bridge, 

past the Memorial Park and down to the junction 

with Elizabethan Way. Go across the main road 

and proceed down Bentgate Street which brings 

you to the entrance of Ellenrod Farm. 

Continue through the farm gate and across the 

bridge spanning the River Beal. Observe the 

stables and Farmhouse, circa 1733, right and 

Garfield Lodge Fishing Lake in the field left. Take 

the steady climb up the paved field track taking 

time to rest and admire the views. The track 

brings you to Garside Farm, circa 1697; proceed 

through the small gate, left of the steel field gate, 

and continue up the track and over a stile in the 

fence by a field gate. Cross the field to another 

stile by a field gate, then turn left, over 

another stile and proceed up a path bordered 

either side by stone walls. Two further stiles bring 

you up to an open meadow, bear to the right which 

brings you to a gate in the wall with waymarker 

signs. This path forms part of Rochdale Way, a 

National Trail. Admire the finest panoramic views 

from this junction, encompassing Crompton Moor 

to the west, Newhey, Milnrow and Ogden to the 

north and Rochdale to the south with the 

background of Brown Wardle and Middle Hill 

extending to Scout Moor and Knowl Hill. These 

views are priceless and certainly make the walk 

worthwhile.

Continue in the direction of Crompton, passing the 

Trig Point 92788 over on the right, at an altitude of 

253 metres. Here we cross a meadow of special 

biological importance, the neutral grassland 

supports abundant types of flora, wild flowers and 

grasses and is a habitat for rare species of moths 

and butterflies. 

The path beings you to a man-made pond; the 

local farmer has obviously harnessed the many 

natural springs in this area to create a watering 

station for grazing livestock. From the pond 

continue down a rough track, to a stile, leaving 

the Green Belt Area and emerging onto Moss 

Gate Road. 

Follow the waymarker signs into the park’s dense 

wooded area. The path is at a high level so take 

great care as you follow its route which zig zags 

down the steep hillside emerging onto the park’s 

main path at Jubilee. Exiting the park gate brings 

you onto A663 Milnrow Road. Take care 

crossing at this junction; there is busy traffic and 

the sight line is poor due to the bends on Jubilee 

bridge. Proceed back along Milnrow Road and 

Shaw Road to Newhey, Milnrow Memorial Park and 

Milnrow Library. This walk distance is 4.5 miles. 

Turn left and proceed to Whitfield Hall. On the 

right observe the ancient architectural windows 

of the stone barn. As the road bends prior to 

Whitfield Dairy Farm it is necessary to take 

the path right, to circumnavigate the farm and 

adjoining field; follow the enclosed field left, round 

through steel container storage area and left again 

emerging onto Smallbrook Road at the top of 

Dunwood Park.

Talk Group. Our walks are designed for 

people of all abilities and ages, who wish 

to gain the health benefits, both physical 

and mental, from walking in a safe and 

social group. Based at Milnrow Library 

we meet every Monday (except Bank 

Holidays) from 9.30am leaving out at 

10am. It is free and friendly and led by 

Volunteer Walk Leaders.

From The Archives 

CLEGG HALL 

If you are driving towards Milnrow 

from the Smithy Bridge side, take a 

right off Wildhouse Lane onto Branch 

Road. Go as far as you can go and 

there by the canal, is Clegg Hall. 

The large Grade 2 listed building stands on 

the site of a much older building thought 

to have been occupied in an area known as 

Little or Great Clegg which gave the hall its 

name although no Clegg families having 

ever lived there. The original hall was built 

by Theophilus Ashton, a lawyer and one 

of the Ashtons of Little Cleggat some time 

between 1610 and 1618. It was described in 

a 1626 survey of Rochdale halls and 

buildings as “a faire capital messuage (an 

old term for dwelling house with land and 

outbuildings) built with free stone with all 

new fair houses of office there-unto 

belonging with gardens, fishponds and 

divers closes of land”. In the same record 

there was also mention of barns, stables, 

courts, orchards, gardens, folds and pigeon 

houses. All are agreed about its grand 

stature with its 2 storeys, its bay windows 

and an imposing entrance porch 

and portico. 

Subsequent owners were John Entwistle 

of Foxholes (and of Entwistle Road fame) 

and the Fenton family from Crimble who 

operated flannel factories adjacent to the 

hall. Water from Hollingworth Lake 

powered Fenton’s Clegg Hall Mill which 

stood close to the canal. Weavers cottages 

nearby housed some of his workforce. 

In the 19th century James Tweedale had 

a cotton mill on the same site and in 1879 

Thomas Wilson bought the mill to spin 

cotton waste. By the 19th century, Clegg 

Hall itself had reverted to a domestic 

dwelling from its role as public house 

when the license was removed because 

the building was becoming too dilapidated 

to continue trading in beer and ales. Later 

inhabitants included one Sam Gartside who 

was born at Clegg Hall and lived there in 

what must have been some squalor from 

1917 until 1939. 

Best known about Clegg Hall is its 

haunting. The earliest accounts of the 

Boggart of Clegg Hall appear in the early 

20th century in Reverend Oakley’s ‘In 

Olden Days’ and concern the murder in 

the original hall in the 13th century of two 

nephews (although some say a niece and a 

nephew) by Richard, the brother of Henry 

de Clegg, the master of the house who was 

away fighting in one of the Crusades. On 

his return, the wicked brother looked to kill 

the father too so that he could secure the 

hall for himself whereupon one of the dead 

boys could be heard calling ‘Father 

The occupancy of Clegg Hall was not 

always domestic. By the late 19th century it 

was used as a country alehouse or inn with 

local working people lodging in its rooms. 

A Charles Turner owned the hall in the 18th 

century and at that time it was the Hare and 

Hounds although better known locally as 

Black Sloven after Turner’s favourite horse. beware!’ which woke him up.

Some versions claim that the waking Henry 

then killed his wicked brother. Since that 

day, so the story goes, the boy’s ghost or 

boggart can be heard in Clegg Hall alerting 

his father to the potentially ghastly deed. 

An alternative version is that the boggart is 

the wicked uncle Richard himself, ridden 

with guilt and walking the corridors of the 

hall at night bewailing his crimes. The room 

where the murder of the two children was 

committed – known as the Boggart 

Chamber - was supposed to be the most 

haunted place in the hall and one in which 

no-one dared sleep! In recent years 

Milnrow’s MAD Theatre Company held 

a ghost hunt in the hall to promote a play 

about the story of Henry de Clegg and the 

haunting which they later performed at 

Ellenroad Steam Mill. 

As is clear from the details of the haunting 

story, the hall now standing was not the 

original. In fact, buildings on the site have 

been gutted by two fires, one in the early 

1900’s and another in the 1950’s although 

regardless of the fire the house had been in 

poor condition for some time. In the 1920’s 

it was described as ‘a ruined hall’ even 

though, by all accounts, Sam Gartside was 

still living there! After World War II the hall 

had lost its impressive portico over the front 

door and much of the roof was missing too. 

Many people remember the ruins in the 

1950’s as still having the upper floors more 

or less intact although rooms on the ground 

floor were sometimes used by a local farmer 

to house cattle. 

Restoration to its original state has 

continued into the 21st century, notably by 

Mr Jason Stead who was also in charge of 

restoring Healey Hall. The scale of the task 

of renovating Clegg Hall can be guessed 

by noting that at its worst, trees were 

growing from the inside walls and through 

the floorboards. 

However, work went ahead and currently 

the building has been restored to a remarkable 

degree, preserving it for those interested 

in local history and ghost hunting! Whilst 

some of Rochdale great houses have gone 

such as Bamford Hall and Summer Castle, 

Clegg Hall stands as stately as ever beside 

the Rochdale Canal.

A quick and easy recipe, perfect for the 

coming season of afternoon teas! 

Buttermilk 

Scones 

INGREDIENTS 

450g self raising flour 

¼ tsp salt 

100g cold diced butter 

85g caster sugar 

Pot buttermilk (approx. 300 ml) 

2 tsp vanilla extract 

Splash milk 

METHOD 

1. Pulse the flour, salt, butter in a food 

processor until there are no lumps 

(or rub in with fingers). 

2. Add and pulse in the sugar. 

3. Gently warm the buttermilk and 

vanilla. 

4. In a large bowl mix together the dry 

and wet ingredients alternately. 

5. Bring the dough together with a knife 

and then fingers. 

6. Press dough out till 4 cm thick. I don’t 

use a rolling pin to avoid too much 

messing with the dough. 

7. Cut out scones and brush with a 

splash of milk in the buttermilk pot. 

8. Cook at 200°C for approx. 10-12 

minutes until just golden on top.

MILNROW AND NEWHEY CARNIVAL 2019 

IS ALMOST UPON US! 

Milnrow and Newhey will be the place 

to be on Saturday 22nd June 2019 as 

many people line the streets to watch 

Milnrow and Newhey Carnival parade 

and attend the summer fete 

afterwards at Milnrow Memorial Park. 

This year the committee are delighted to 

announce that Springhill Hospice and 

Rochdale Heartbeat will be their chosen 

charities for 2019. 

Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, 

with the Deputy Mayor of Rochdale. 

Moorhouse Primary, Crossgates Primary, 

Newhey Community Primary and St Thomas 

C of E Primary Schools are along with 

numerous trailers, cars, dancing groups and 

walkers including Bam Designs is a unique 

garment printers based in the heart of 

Milnrow Village, who can design and print 

garments from t-shirts to shopper bags, 

hoodies to suitcases and even Umbrellas! 

No Job is to big or small for them, catering for 

all kinds of sports clubs including gymnastics 

and also specialising in the design and print 

of Dance School uniforms. 

The parade terminates at Milnrow Memorial 

Park where there will be live music from New 

Identity, which is a five piece local iconic pop 

party band covering hits from Duran Duran, 

Spandu Ballet, Barry White, Robbie Williams, 

Bruno Mars plus more. Not to be missed! 

At the park there will be a funfair for all ages, 

paintball and crazy golf. A wide variety of 

stalls include children’s clothing, handbags, 

accessories, face painting, glitter hair to 

name but a few. 

There will be many stalls to tempt your taste 

buds too, one of which is Mrs Barber’s Bakery 

who are a specialist in making cupcakes for 

all occasions. They produce themed cupcakes 

and indulgent flavours using quality 

ingredients and love to create something 

special for every customer. Julie creates each 

cupcake from her home in Milnrow where 

she has a 5 star food rating. The bakery has 

just celebrated it’s 4th birthday and is looking 

forward to being back at the carnival again 

this year. There will be around 20 flavours to 

choose from including a gluten free option. 

They will have cupcakes that include 

favourite chocolates like Gooey Rolo, 

Malteaser Madness, Crunchie Crunch, or 

Kinder Bueno, along with more traditional 

flavours like Lemon Meringue, Jammie Dodger 

and even one that looks like an ice-cream! 

The only problem you will have on the day is 

deciding which one to pick? 

Kaizen-Do Karate will be holding exciting 

demonstrations and board breaking 

throughout the day at the park. The 

award-winning Academy will also have lots 

of Sensei’s at the event who will deliver mini 

taster sessions for anybody who would like to 

take part. Anybody who wants more

Rhubarb and Almond Frangipan 

Serves 6 

INGREDIENTS 

4 tablespoons apricot jam 

300g puff pastry 

200g butter, at room temperature 

200g caster sugar 

4 eggs 

Almond essence 

200g ground almond 

50g plain flour 

2 sticks rhubarb 

200ml stock syrup 

METHOD 

1. Line a rectangular tray 30cm x 20cm with greaseproof. 

Roll out the pastry and line the tray, brush the apricot 

jam over the base. 

2. Beat together the butter and sugar until it is light and 

fluffy, beat in the eggs one at a time, add the almond 

essence, almonds and flour and mix in. 

3. Spoon the almond mixture on top of the apricot puree 

and level off. Bake in a moderate oven 160°c for approx. 

25 minutes until filling is lightly risen and golden. 

4. Remove from the oven – leave to cool, then portion. 

5. Take the rhubarb and cut into 5cm long sticks – poach 

gently for approximately 10 minutes until tender. Place 

on top of the frangipan. 

6. Warm gently just before serving and serve with a 

generous scoop of rhubarb and custard ice cream.
