Turkey’s foreign trade gap
falls 67.4% in Q1
Turkey’s foreign trade deficit in
the first quarter of this year fell
67.4% year-on-year, the country’s
statistical authority announced.
The figure totaled some $6.8 billion
from January to March, improving
from a $20.7 billion deficit in
same period last year, according
to the Turkish Statistical Institute
(TurkStat).
Turkish exports rose to $42.2
billion, up 2.7% on a yearly
basis, while imports slipped to
$49 billion, down 20.8%. The
exports-to-imports coverage ratio
rose to 86.2% in the first three
months of this year, up significantly
from 66.5% in the same period
last year. The country’s foreign
trade volume reached $91.3 billion
between January and March,
down 11.4% annually, according
to the data. Exports to EU countries,
the country’s main trading
partner, remained almost unchanged
at around $21.3 billion.
More than 50% of Turkish exports
in the first three months of the
year went to the EU. The Near and
Middle Eastern region was the
second-largest export market for
Turkish products with some $7.8
billion, followed by Africa with
nearly $3.9 billion.
Germany remained Turkey’s top
export market by country, receiving
$3.9 billion worth of Turkish
goods, or a 9.3% share of total
exports. It was followed by the
U.K. with $2.64 billion, Italy with
$2.4 billion, and Spain with $2.1
billion.
Turkey imported the most from
Russia ($5.25 billion), China
($4.24 billion), Germany ($4.16
billion), and the U.S. ($2.48
billion) in the same period. In
March, Turkey’s exports fell 0.4%
on a yearly basis to reach $15.5
billion, while imports went down
to $17.6 billion, a 17.8% decline.
The main partner country for
exports in the said month was
Germany with $1.4 billion,
followed by the United Kingdom
with $855 million, Italy with $827
million and Iraq with $782 million.
On the other hand, the top
country for Turkey’s imports was
Russia with around $1.97 billion,
followed by Germany with nearly
$1.62 billion, China with approximately
$1.41 billion and the U.S.
with $940 million. Last month,
the foreign trade deficit dropped
63.1% year-on-year to reach
$2.1 billion. Meanwhile, Turkey’s
exports reached an all-time high
of $168.1 billion, a 7.1% year-onyear
increase in 2018, supporting
the decrease in the foreign trade
deficit by 28.4% to $55 billion.
On the other hand, imports went
down by 4.6% to $223.1 billion
last year. According to the government’s
new economy program announced
in September last year,
the country aims to reach $182
billion in exports by year-end.

Akdemir Machinery at
Interzum Cologne with
its AK2020 spring frame
wrapping machine!
Growing fast at home and
abroad, Akdemir Machinery
will attract attention with its
AK2020 spring frame wrapping
machine that will be displayed
at Interzum Cologne
17
Aiming to produce the best for its customers in
order to obtain maximum efficiency, the company
focuses on R&D activities. Akdemir Machinery will
bring together its AK2020 spring frame wrapping
machine which was developed as a result of these
studies. The machine is able to reduce the area
covered in the storage area and storage space by
15/1, depending on the type and size of the products
such as paper and spring frame that are used
in beds, sofas, furniture and textile products.
Osman Akdemir, Foreign Trade Manager of Akdemir
Machinery, stated that Interzum had a very
important place in the sector and added, “We
are also very happy to be a sough after machine
manufacturer in this sector and we are glad to
promote our new products that are manufactured
for the new markets and new potential customers.
We believe that this will give us a lot of opportunities
to collect information, to make sales and
to establish new relationships for us in our future
works. Interzum also contributes to the promotion
of the companies.”
“The mattress sub-industry will continue to grow!”
Evaluating the industry’s current situation, Akdemir
says, “The mattress supplier industry has succeeded
to move its development to the next level with
the technological developments in recent years.
This sector, that forms the basis of the main product
groups, is far more important. In other words, if
the distance pieces of your products are maximally
efficient, your product groups will be so reliable
and solid. In recent years, the development of the
sector has gained more importance and it entered
into self-development. If we benefit from technology
in the maximum level, our development process
will be better.”

Macro
benefits from
micro pocket
coils for the
industry!
Recognized as the most innovative supplier of quality components,
SPINKS SPRINGS design and build its own machinery to produce
game-changing products.
Established in 2009, Spinks
Springs is a leading supplier of
unique, micro pocket coils to the
furniture and bedding industry.
Spinks Springs is part of Yorkshire-based
family bed manufacturer
Harrison Spinks, and through
continuous investment in technology,
is regarded as the industry’s
most innovative suppliers of
quality components.
For 10 years, Spinks Springs have
been shaping the industry through
true innovation. They pioneered
the invention of the original
micro coil product, Posturfil, which
was not only a total redesign
of the classic pocket spring,
but it completely changed the
way the springs themselves are
produced. With a team of on-site
engineers who not only produce
the award-winning components,
Spinks Springs also has a dedicated
Research and Development
team based at their manufacturing
facility in Leeds (UK) who design,
build and maintain the machinery
21
to make these micro coils. The
Posturfil product is a low height
micro coil that can be used for a
wide variety of applications from
mattresses and upholstery, to
transportation seating and even
footwear. They are flexible, pressure
relieving and easy to customise,
producing unrivalled levels of
comfort and support.
Since the invention of the original
Posturfil product, Spinks Springs
have developed the micro coil
further, using finer wire to create
products with higher spring
counts, after it was discovered
that this provides numerous
advantages. The company’s own
state-of-the-art wire drawing
facility helps Spinks Springs draw
the finest wire within the industry,
which has enabled the world’s
smallest micro pocket coil products
to be developed. This lightweight
product contain an industry-leading
1000 coils per m2.
As well as a variety of different
spring counts, Spinks Springs
offer micro coil products pocketed
in a range of different fabrics.
This fabric offering includes the
award-winning breathable 3D
spacer fabric, which allows greater
levels of comfort and ventilation,
making it perfect to use within
furniture or bedding.
Spinks Springs has continually
invested in the latest manufacturing
technology, designing and
building its own machinery to produce
new products and improve
its processes. This has enabled
22
the company to produce fully
customisable sheets of springs,
using their Springs Anywhere
technology. Springs Anywhere
offers complete customisation,
with firm, soft or no springs able
to be inserted in any pocket.
Whether you wish to create
targeted zonal support, or create
a more structured edge with firm
coils around the parameter of the
sheet, Springs Anywhere allows
you to create different feels with
distinctive levels of comfort and
support. You may even wish to try
the unique ‘checkerboard’ configuration,
or the ‘Diagonal Airflow 4’
where every 4th pocket is missing
a coil. These create airflow channels
across the sheet, perfect for
use in mattresses.
Spinks Springs are constantly
looking at ways in which to improve
the products and processes
within the furniture and bedding
industry. With an ethos of continuous
reinvestment, Spinks Springs’
components and machinery
continue to push the boundaries
of innovation in the sector whilst
also highlighting high quality
British manufacturing across the
globe. The company’s impressive
growth in the last three years
led to it being awarded a 2018
Queen’s Award for Enterprise for
International Trade and parent
company, Harrison Spinks received
a Queen’s Award for Enterprise
in Innovation. They have also
recently been awarded a 2019
Queen’s Award for Enterprise in
Sustainable Development, highlighting
the company’s mission to
be ever-more sustainable in their
innovations.
For the last three years, Spinks
Springs’ team of expert engineers
have been working on technology
which will change the way the
world will sit and sleep in the
future, reducing the need to be
reliant on petrochemicals. This
new technology will be unveiled
at Interzum 2019, and looks set to
be the most exciting development
the industry has seen since the
invention of the micro coil.
They will also be unveiling the
next generation coil-within-a-coil
product, after parent company
Harrison Spinks pioneered the
original coil-within-a-coil over 20
years ago. Visit them in Hall 10.1
VEOCEL introduces
Eco Cycle Technology
to drive circularity in
nonwoven applications
Lenzing’s pioneering Eco Cycle technology involves upcycling
up to one-third of pulp from cotton scraps, e.g. from garment
production, in addition to wood pulp sourced from sustainably
managed forests
25
Lenzing Group (Lenzing) announced
the introduction of Eco
Cycle technology under its specialty
nonwoven brand, VEOCEL.
Eco Cycle technology is a testament
to the VEOCEL brand’s
commitment to driving sustainability
and circularity in the nonwoven
industry. The technology involves
the upcycling of a substantial
proportion of pre-consumer cotton
scraps, e.g. from garment production,
and mixing with sustainably
sourced wood pulp, to produce
pure new virgin VEOCEL branded
lyocell fibers for nonwoven
applications.
“Since the inception of the
VEOCEL brand, we have been
pioneering the development
and application of sustainable
nonwoven technologies and
applications. Eco Cycle technology
encompasses our commitment to
providing the industry with sustainable
raw materials and driving
circularity in the nonwoven industry
ecosystem. Promoting circular
economy will be a key strategy of
the Lenzing Group in the long run.
Eco Cycle technology will enable
us to a bold new step in driving
the discussion of circularity of
natural botanic materials in the
ecosystem,” said Jürgen Eizinger,
Vice President of Global Business
Management Nonwovens, Lenzing
AG.
Eco Cycle technology leverages
Lenzing’s award-winning efficient
26
closed-loop production process to
produce virgin VEOCEL branded
lyocell fibers with upcycled
pre-consumer cotton scraps and
wood pulp from sustainable
sources. The process recovers
more than 99% of the solvent
and water in a closed loop and
repeatedly feeds it back into the
production process. This results in
extremely low levels of emissions
and absence of optical brighteners
in the VEOCEL branded
lyocell fiber production.
“Produced using an environmentally
friendly and sustainable
process, VEOCEL Lyocell fibers
are certified clean and safe. With
Eco Cycle technology, these fibers
for nonwoven applications offer
nonwoven roll-good manufacturers
a convenient way to contribute to
the circular economy without the
necessity to engage in mechanical
recycling which possibly produce
harmful byproducts and emissions.
This holistic approach enables us
to set new benchmarks in circularity,”
Eizinger added.
VEOCEL branded lyocell fibers
have been certified Biobased®
by the United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA). Blending
VEOCEL branded Lyocell fibers
with other fibers adds a greater
degree of smoothness and
absorbency to nonwoven fabrics,
and will significantly improve the
liquid absorbency in wet wipes,
offering a more convenient way to
clean surfaces.

Comfytex’s innovative
mattress fabrics exhibit
in Interzum Cologne!
Kuçukler Textile is ready to promote three new products developed
by its R&D team and village technology products, an award winning
item in Interzum Guangzhou, by displaying in Interzum Cologne.
Exporting its products to 64 countries,
Comfytex based the success
and the quality of the products on
R&D investments. With these, the
company claims a leading position
in international competition.
Mukremin Kucuk, Kucukler Textile’s
Sales and Marketing Manager,
informed us about their plans for
the Interzum fair and the products
they are going to exhibit in the
event.
Would you mention about the
collection you have planned to
show in the fair?
Preparations for the fair are
running for about two years.
Since there will be visitors from
many countries, we made specific
group of products for their specific
regional needs by considering the
trends and fashions. Besides, we
developed innovative products
31
in our functional and specific yarn
lines thanks to the activities of
our R&D team. We will take three
new products in total, in addition
to the two new products that are
awarded in Interzum Guangzhou
that reduce CO2 and increases
O2, produced with village technology.
Mukremin Kucuk, Kucukler Textile’s
Sales and Marketing Manager
You said you were working for the
fair for two years; so, tell us why
the fair is so important for your
company?
Germany hosts one of the most
important fair events for the
sector with its developed industry
and deep rooted fair tradition.
Coverage of the fair is not limited
only with Europeans, and makes it
possible to introduce our products
to wider target groups.
32
What are your expectations from
the fair?
Comfytex products are exported to
64 countries. We expect that with
the new and innovative products
of our company we will be able
to export more of them in these
countries.
How do you evaluate the
developments in the mattress and
its supplier industries?
The mattress industry is growing
steadily. Rate of growth may be
different in certain regions. In
some of the non-saturated markets
sales are growing the most.
In Turkey the furniture industry
grows in parallel with the growth
of the construction industry.
Likewise, the growth in mattress
suppliers runs in parallel with the
growing sales in the mattress
industry.
What are the recent investments
and new prospective products in
line?
At the end of last year we doubled
our factory space by acquiring
the land in the neighbor. We
have an investment plan for the
next three years. Innovation is
important for our company. We
update our collections four times
in a year. We export 80% of our
production. Our aim is to build a
world brand from these grounds
by improving our global power of
competition.
34
Awaiting for world
to meet in Interzum!
Supporting the
mattress industry
with its product
range, Ruba
displays its products
at Interzum
Cologne.
The company exports all of its
products to all over the world with
its young management team.
Taking pride with its highest
quality products and services,
advanced technology machinery
yields, advanced production
capabilities, improvement and
efficiency at production, Ruba will
showcase its competitive products
in the most important show. We
got opinion of Oguzhan Oguz,
General Manager of Ruba prior to
Interzum Cologne.
What do you plan for Interzum
Cologne? Would you mention
about the products you will exhibit
in the fair?
Interzum Cologne is organized every
two years and we know that
it is the most important exhibition
for the mattress industry. In order
to be successful we believe that
we have to prepare very carefully
and extensively. Because of that,
we started to prepare long time
ago. We exhibit primary commod-
35
ities of mattress components. We
trust our products’ quality, expert
team and our long time experience
in the mattress industry.
The visitors can find steel wire,
bonnell springs, felts, woven mattress
ticking and knitted mattress
ticking fabrics in our stand. So, we
believe that the visitors who want
to produce mattress can find all
basic mattress components in our
How important is this fair for Ruba
and for the industry?
Interzum Cologne is the biggest
exhibition for the mattresses industry.
Every two years many visitors
flow to this leading fair. We
believe that the exhibition adds
prestige to its exhibitors. Mattress
producers come to the exhibition
in order to see new technologies,
to source new products and to find
new suppliers.
This is the first time for our company
to be an exhibitor at Interzum
Cologne. We are very happy
and excited to meet with related
36
professionals coming from all over
world. We believe that it will
bring prestige to our company and
it will help us to build up cooperation.
We do not think that this
is just a simple fair; we consider
Interzum as a venue for us to meet
with the world.
What are your expectations from
the fair?
As I explained, this is the first
time that we are here and we are
prepared well with our products
and our expert team. We export
all of our products to 30 countries
all over the world and we expect
to meet with our current customers
in order to discuss about how
to grow up our cooperation and
to show our products. Also, we
would like to meet with potential
customers in order to introduce
our company and products. We
believe that Interzum will make us
more powerful.
What do you want to say about the
development of the mattress subindustry?
The mattresses are very important
for people because all people live
in bed minimum 6-8 hours a day.
So, we believe that we are operating
in a very important
industry for
people’s
health. Because of that we always
think to develop raw materials of
mattress components in order to
help mattress producers.
The mattress industry has become
more important in last 10 years
because now users are making
researches in order to find the
best solution for sleep. Consciousness
of the consumer has been
increasing all over the world and
this helps the industry to grow up
healthily.

very useful platform to be able to
this fair?
Meeting with many foreign participators.
Having a vision about the
future of the sector.
How do you consider the
development of the mattress subindustry?
The industry has made significant
progress over the years as
it blends its experience from the
past with technology. More and
more platforms where the experts
of the sector speak up and the
innovations that provide solutions
to all the needs of the sector
should be developed.
What are your latest investments
and new products?
We are constantly in search for
new product ranges. As for the
investments, we will continue to
grow and increase our capacity
while maintaining our quality
which is a big topic for us considering
this is the reason why
our customers prefer to make
business with us. We will proceed
“The future”
begins
again with
interzum in
Cologne
42
On 21 May 2019, the future of
furniture production and interior
construction begins again in Cologne.
interzum inspires the global furniture
supplier industry. This is where
decision makers, opinion leaders,
disseminators and trendsetters from
all over the world keep up with the
innovations in the sector, seek out
and establish new contacts. The facts
alone speak in favor of this leading
international fair, with more than
1,700 exhibitors coming face-to-face
with an anticipated 70,000 visitors
from over 150 countries. Around 80
per cent of them come from abroad,
making interzum the most international
industry event in the world. Exhibitors
present their innovations across
190,000 square meters of exhibition
space.
interzum is an opportunity for the
supplier industry to reveal all its innovative
power. What’s staying? What’s
coming next? Divided by theme
into three topic areas, the event is
optimally organized to make trade
fair attendance a success, because
44
161 Turkish
exhibitors
representing
all segments of
the mattress
and furniture
industry will
showcase a
broad range
of competitive
products at this
world arena
where the future
of the industry
begins, 21-24
May 2019.
its structure brings the stakeholders
in the value chain
into close contact – and gives
exhibitors and visitors alike
a good overview. The largest
exhibition area at interzum
2019 will be occupied by
the “Function & Components”
product segment. In Halls 3.2,
4, 5, 7 and 8, the industry will
show how customers’ increasing
demands in the areas of
technology, energy efficiency,
comfort and convenience can
be fulfilled. These points will
be addressed by the product
segments of light and lighting
systems, semi-finished
products for storage, kitchen,
office and frame furniture,
fittings, locks and furniture
46
components. Even more
convenient, individual, digital
and connected – these are the
expectations for the interiors
of the future, and this is the
reason why solutions to these
requirements will be the focus
of attention in the technical
and functional components
segment.
The conservation of resources,
sustainable raw materials
and cradle-to-cradle concepts
– these are but a few of the
trends addressed in the Materials
& Nature segment in Halls
4.2, 6 and 10.2. This is where
a comprehensive presentation
of versatile materials for
furniture design will again be
offered, including wood, veneer,
parquet, interior design
and furnishings, decorative
surface design, decor papers,
laminates, wood-based materials,
high-pressure laminates,
solid surface materials, edge
trims, surface treatments and
finishes, embossing cylinders
and sheet metal.
Climate-regulating upholstery
fabrics, energy-efficient cutting
machines for foam materials
and leather that make optimal
use of materials, weatherproof
outdoor fabrics: nowadays,
success comes from innovative
ideas, high-performance materials
and ultra-efficient processing
by means of advanced
technology and machines.
In the Textile & Machinery
segment in Halls 9, 10.1 and
11, the quality leaders and
innovation drivers from across
the entire value chain will
again be presenting their
latest developments. These include
machinery for upholstery
and mattress manufacture,
upholstery materials, upholstery
accessories, materials for
covers, leather and adhesives.
48
In a new development for
2019, Hall 10.1 will serve as a
central connecting hub for the
Textile & Machinery segment,
reinventing itself in terms of
structure. The entire segment
is thereby setting standards
for a successful future. With
this new clustering, the Textile
& Machinery themed area is
growing even more closely
together. The three segments
mean that visitors can also
look forward to an optimal
structure throughout the trade
fair, designed to give a quick
and compact overview of the
trends and new developments
in the sector. “Today, success
is the result of innovative
ideas. With the new concept,
we’re boosting the trade fair’s
function to offer orientation
and transparency,” says Matthias
Pollmann, Koelnmesse’s
Vice President Trade Fair
Management.
50
With a range of special exhibitions,
the trade fair also
explores global megatrends
such as individualization,
mobility and digitalization.
The leading industry platform
is thereby an important source
of inspiration for designers,
architects, product developers
and other planners.
With the newly established
“Tiny Spaces – Living in Compact
Homes“ piazza, interzum
is addressing a highly topical issue. After all, living space is
becoming increasingly scarce in the world’s congested urban areas,
with rents continuously rising. How comfort can be combined with
small living spaces is and will remain a highly relevant issue - and
not only for the interiors industry. interzum has attracted a range of
high-profile companies to appear in the piazza: Atim, Blum, Hettich,
Hommel, Häfele and Pessotto will present their responses to the
52
specific requirements of living
in tiny spaces. As suppliers to
the furniture industry, they will
provide important new inspiration
for developments in interior
design.
The “Disruptive Materials –
Changing the Future” piazza at
the upcoming interzum (21 to 24
May 2019) will be devoted to
these materials and production
methods. The Berlin trend-forecasting
agency HAUTE INNOVA-
TION will showcase some of the
latest materials innovations and
disruptive technologies at the
trade fair. The exhibition will be
divided into four main areas of
focus: biological transformation,
resource efficiency and sustainability,
digital and smart materials,
and production-related
materials innovations. Featuring
over 100 exhibits across roughly
400 square meters, the “Disruptive
Materials” piazza will be
among the major attractions at
54
interzum. The “Trends in Surfaces
& Wood Design” piazza
in Hall 6.1 will present product
solutions for interior architecture
and the furniture design
of tomorrow. The piazza will
be highlighting how innovative
surface materials broaden
the range of options available
to the industry. Pioneering developments
in interior architecture
and furniture design will
be concentrated into one area
here. The “Surfaces & Wood
Design” piazza is curated
by the interior designer and
trend expert Katrin de Louw.
With her Trendfilter® agency,
she has already been responsible
for a special exhibition
on the topic of surfaces at the
last edition of interzum. The
piazza is divided into sections
addressing the key words
“Sustainability”, “Customized”,
“Haptic”, “Lightweight”, “Digital
Printing”, “Anti-Fingerprint”
and “Wood & Stones”. It is
not just wood and materials
that will be presented in the
special exhibition, but also
related product groups such as
furniture handles or upholstery
and decorative fabrics.
Visitors will have the opportunity
to experience innovative
solutions for life in mobile
living environments. All the
trends in the mobile sector
are highly relevant to interzum
because new materials
and innovations in function,
machinery and lightweight
design are required to put
them into practice. Indeed,
the requirements for mobile
spaces are often even more
demanding than in a typical
residential context. The
special event area in Hall 10.1
will host impressive exhibits
and highlight examples from
the Maritime, Aircraft, Railway
and Automotive areas.
56
How can the expectations of
furniture production and interior
design be served by means
of digitalization? And what
role do interzum’s products
and solutions play in this? interzum
2019 addresses these
questions in its new “Digitalization:
Focus on Consumer
Trends!” piazza. This is where
interzum’s exhibitors will
showcase a product or service
they offer, or a best-practice
example from their everyday
business. Physical products
with digital components will
be presented, as will new
business models and solutions
in which digitalization
influences design, production,
sales, logistics or recycling.
A special area in Hall 3.2
has been dedicated to the
subject of digital printing as
a complement to the piazza.
The broad spectrum of potential
uses of digital printing will
be shown in a demonstration
ranging from the design concept
to the finished piece of
furniture and thus including all
the important process steps
required for the integration of
this groundbreaking technology
into furniture production
and interior design. The
entire process will therefore
be shown, from the choice of
decoration and its transfer
into the computer programs to
the actual printing stage and
the subsequent finishing step.
There will also be a presentation
of a selection of leading
specialists in the field. In this
way, visitors will discover how
digital printing technology
can be integrated into their
processes, what process steps
have to be taken into consideration
and what expertise is
available.

Yataş Foam is preparing
to make a fast progress
on exports with
investments
Having
the distinction
of
being the first
foam factory in
Anatolia, Yatas Foam
is preferred in Turkey, especially
in Kayseri with quality products.
Since its establishment, Yatas, a
global brand in bedding, furniture
and home textiles, has doubled
its investments.
With 43 years of experience in
the sector, Yatas Group continues
to grow by extending its active
areas and expanding its targets.
Yatas Foams are used in all sectors.
We talked about the activities
of Yatas Foam Industrial Sales
Group Manager Mehmet Ozenc.
As
a leading
brand in the bedding
sector, we know that you started
to produce foams. How do you
evaluate your company’s move in
this direction?
Yes, it is true. The basis of Yatas
is Suntas that was established in
1976. It is the first foam factory in
Anatolia. In 1996, it was the first
company traded in Istanbul Stock
Exchange in this field. Even today,
our company, which shows the
success of the foam factory investment
having a high investment
and operating cost, made great
contributions to the sector and
the region. Products
of the company are sold
in Kayseri and vicinity and have
been used and preferred especially
in Turkey. In the following
periods, emphasis was placed on
the production of bedding, home
textiles and furniture. Finally, in
2017, we invested significantly
in the foam and our capacity was
tripled. When we look at this
development, we always perform
the firsts thanks to our quality and
service-oriented employees. With
its 43 years of experience and its
corporate identity our company
made great contributions to the
industry and in the coming years
we will continue to service successfully
to our customers.
69
Mehmet Ozenc
Can you tell us about the variety
of foams you produce? What are
the main features that make your
products noticeable?
In our factory, we produce foams
for the furniture, automotive,
footwear, textile, sound insulation,
and lamination industries.
Foams are actually used almost in
all products that we have in living
spaces. But we are not able to notice
this because several coatings
are made on this basic product.
What makes Yataş Foam different
is the quality of our products,
together with our product diversity,
and our quality bar is always
high, independent of changing
economic and social conditions.
Could you tell us about your
monthly production capacity?
We have production and cutting
capacity of 50 thousand cubic meters
per month. The investment we
have made on the latest systems
and machines is ready for the
infrastructure that will increase the
capacity to 100 thousand cubic
meters as soon as possible.
Could you tell us about the new
types of foam you have recently
produced? What kinds of foams in
the sector are more demanded?
The main market of the foam
sector is the furniture sector. Foams
between 14 dn and 45 dn are demanded
in the furniture industry. In
the automotive sector, non-flammable
foams and late-yellowing types
and laminated foams are used in
the textile sector.
Which countries do you export to?
We started our export activities at
the end of 2018 with the completion
of investments. We export our
products to Georgia and Israel.
Foam is one of the most difficult
products to export due to transportation
costs. We have invested on
vacuuming and pressing machinery
which eliminate this disadvantage
and we continue to do so. It can be
exported to several countries starting
from our neighboring countries
to America by using these pressing
techniques. We aim to increase the
number of countries from 2 to 5 by
the end of 2019.
What are the fairs you have
attended in Turkey and abroad? Is
there a fair in the near future for
you to attend?
Since our capacity did not support
70
higher sales until 2017, we could
not participate in domestic and
foreign trade fair organizations.
However, as I mentioned before,
with the increasing capacity and
renewed technology with the
investments in 2017, we aim
to attend 2 fairs in a year as
of 2020; one domestic and the
other in abroad. The fairs we will
participate will be in the concept
of suppliers or material fairs.
What do you want to add about the
foam industry?
6.5 million m3 of foam is made
annually in Turkey. This corresponds
to almost 145,000 tons
of raw material. All of these raw
materials are imported from
abroad. Almost all of the inputs
are imported and almost 85% of
the product cost is composed of
raw material, raw material supply
process and production constraints
due to external dependency and
threats as well as being extremely
affected by exchange rate fluctuations.
These are the biggest
problems of the sector. As the
producers in the foam industry, the
only way to provide added value
to our company and our country is
to make use of the resources most
efficiently and act export-oriented.
As Yatas Foam family, we are
striving to use these raw materials
in the most efficient manner
to use the national resources of
the country in accordance with its
purpose. Unfortunately, due to
price and competitive wars, the
quality of foams produced in the
markets are lowered in order to
reduce the cost, and make them
attractive to the users at first
glance. However, the products
made with these foams have a short
life span or a refund. Producers faced
big financial and moral losses due to
this preference of theirs to get price
advantages.
Finally, I recommend that the users
should be aware of the raw material
costs, the largest part of end products,
and emphasize on the quality of
the foams they use in their products.
The appearance of foams may be
the same, but their quality cannot be
clearly understood by their appearance
only. When we devote a part of
our time to quality measurement and
learning, we can learn how to test
by touching and looking closely. The
price is obviously important for the
costs of end products and for competition
but this is not only dimension.
Our expectations from the sector and
customers are that they have to use
high quality raw materials, produce
high quality products, and extend
this quality culture into the sector
and not waste the national resources
of the country.

Mert Machinery sets
sail to new markets in
Interzum Cologne
Growing with years of experience Mert Machinery is proud to
be a known brand in global markets. The firm is to introduce its
high technology machinery to visitors at international fairs.
One of the most sought after
firms Mert Machinery turns every
step in new markets as a new
opportunity. “Contacting with new
companies as buyers and becoming
a famous brand are important
factors for us,” says Pinar Yaltir,
International Sales Official of
Mert Machinery. She responded
our questions prior to Interzum
Cologne fair.
What do you plan for the Interzum
Cologne? Would you mention
about the products you will exhibit
in the fair?
By following recent trends and
changing needs we design new
machinery and upgrade the present
ones in our product line. We
are ready to display our products
and customer services in the fair
in order to get maximum returns.
73
We completed our strategic plans.
We decided on our expectations,
the target markets and our positioning,
the location of the booth
and the machinery that will be
exhibited.
Among the products that we are
going to display in the fair are
multiple needle chain sewing
machinery that we are the first
and sole producers in Turkey and
that has the best performance on
both quality and price label, the
double ram quilt machinery that
we started to make with our long
years of experience, full automatic
mattress rolling packaging machinery
that will be exhibited first in
the fair and the mattress tape
edge machinery, which one of the
complementary machines for the
mattress industry.
How important is this fair for your
firm and for the industry?
For us fairs are doors opening to
the world. We are one of the first
firms among machinery manufacturers
participating in this fair.
This will be our eight participation
this far. Each year we have got
even higher satisfactory feedbacks
in the fair. Firms, especially
those in Europe, want to trust the
74
firm and their perceptions about
the firms that regularly take place
in the event are becoming higher
and higher.
Potential buyers who are interested
in buying goods and services
for their needs visit to the fair
venue by their own consent and
benefit the attraction power
of the fair organization for the
relevant customers. Visitors are
special buyers who have a natural
interest for the goods and services
exhibited in the fair so have
higher potential for establishing
commercial contacts and contracts.
And, fairs have several other
facilities for both participants and
visitors.
Interzum Cologne fair, an important
meeting point for the global
mattress manufacturers keeps its
position of being the most important
fair for the sector. It keeps its
contributions by getting together
the buyers and sellers who may
sign profitable sales contracts.
Fair is both offer many opportunities
to help them to get information
about customer, their needs
and demands and in their promotional
efforts. Today, in order to
be successful in a market of high
competition the firms have to utilize
the several marketing tools effectively.
One of these marketing
tools and media, is specialized
and focused fairs that address the
right audience. Interzum is one of
the best examples of these kind of
fair events. When used effectively,
75
it is the best way to enter a new
market and a new country.
What are your expectations from
the fair?
Being a worldwide brand Mert
Machinery has great contribution
on the national economy and
employment in the country. Our
company has become a leader
in its field with the experience it
accumulated.
Every fair event that we participate
in abroad increases the
number of export markets. With an
aim to increase the brand awareness
of the company and deliver
our brand we targeted to take
place new fair each year.
We are aware of the fact that, it
is not sufficient to produce quality
products for the markets and sell
them in these markets for being
successful. Because, consumers
can come across the same products
at varying price and quality
and have the freedom of choice
among several alternatives. We
know this and we do not sell only
machinery to our customers but of-
76
fer them services and maintenance
quarantees. Selling goods is easy,
continuity of services is important.
We know also that providing satisfying
services is difficult, so we
empower our sales teams. New
markets means new opportunities
for us.
As Mert Machinery, we are a
dynamic, flexible, easy going, and
world watching company. Fairs
held in abroad are especially
important for machinery manufacturers.
Because, visitors can find
opportunity to attend demonstration
of our machinery in live
performances. Then they easily
and immediately compare our
offerings with products and price
performances with other company’s
products and decide at the
moment what to buy.
How do you comment on the
development in the suppliers of
mattress industry?
Slowdown in the national and
international markets is indispensable.
However, mattress industry
is able to overcome the problems
by developing innovative products
and most suitable offerings. Because,
mattress has now become
more than a product meeting basic
needs but a special item that
enrich the quality of life of the
people.
Is there any new products or
investments you made recently?
Innovation has become a culture
in our firm. Long range plans of
our firm is designed by targeting
to be one of the leading actors in
the market. As you know, we have
been operating in our new factory
of 10,000 sqm equipped with
latest technology that employs
about 100 workers. We speeded
up the preparations for R&D activities.
From now on, production and
R&D teams will act independently.

The industry sticks
to Sefa Chemical’s
exclusive products!
The leading brand of the adhesive industry, Sefa Chemical attracts
attention with its products that are used in various sectors. Firms
in the mattress, packaging, carpet, hygiene, textile, printing and
construction industries do not give up Sefa Chemical.
Increasing its number of products
day by day following always
the latest technology, the firm
highlighted that they care first for
the human health. The interview
made with Ramazan Celik, Board
Chairman of Sefa Chemical is as
follows:
Which sectors do you offer services
from the day of establishment?
SEFA CHEMICAL has been providing
services for beds, furniture,
packaging, hygiene, carpet, filter,
textile, printing and construction
83
sectors since the day it was
founded.
Can you tell us about your
production capacity and product
range?
With a daily production capacity
of 40 tons, we produce glue,
which is known as hot and cold
having various varieties. We can
classify our products under four
main categories. These are Solvent
Based Adhesives - Hotmelt
Adhesives - Water Based Adhesives
and Spray Aerosols. These
are divided into different brands.
What are the main features of your
products?
It can be used for single surface.
Owing to its single surface use, it
provides more economical consumption
by using less adhesive.
Solvent Based products are
non-flammable. There is no odor
problem in our products.
Can you tell us about the use of
adhesives in the bedding sector?
Adhesives are indispensable in
the bedding sector. Particularly,
the majority of the firms which are
operating in the bedding sector
and attaching importance to
quality, are the Sefox customers.
Sefox is an effective product for
the healthy adhesion of products
and the prevention of odor problems
in the end user. Especially,
the fact that Sefox products’ being
inflammable makes our brand one
step ahead in terms of occupational
health and safety.
Ramazan Celik
Could you tell us about your
laboratory and R&D activities?
In order to develop the brand
and products, Sefox develops its
laboratory and R&D activities day
by day. In our laboratory where
renewed technology is used, the
tests of the products are carried
out continuously.
Since its foundation, SEFA CHEM-
ICAL Company started to offer all
84
kinds of adhesives to the furniture
industry. The number of products
has increased day by day and
has always followed the latest
technology. It is the only company
in Europe that can produce all
different types of adhesives and
has this infrastructure.
How do you evaluate the adhesive
sector due to the development of
technology? Can you evaluate the
general situation of this sector in
our country?
The mattress market in Turkey is
95 percent comprised of spring
mattresses and 5 percent are
foam beds. The investments made
by the mattress manufacturers
vary between 60 thousand dollars
and 60 million dollars; Approximately
4 million mattresses are
sold annually.
The bedding industry recorded
a great success in recent years,
both in and outside Turkey with
R&D supported innovative products
thereby offered more than
4 million mattresses to its final
consumers. China, USA, Germany,
Belgium and Poland are the
leading countries in the exports of
bedding and similar products. The
countries that import the most are
the countries as the USA, Japan,
Germany, UK and Canada. Our
country has an important place in
the world in this industry. Turkey
is among the countries that made
the most exports of these products
to Germany, Iraq, Romania, Italy,
etc.
In the last 10 years, Turkey attracted
the attention of the world with
structural reforms, export-oriented
growth and big investments. Turkey’s
furniture exports continued
to grow day by day. So much so
that the country has a big target
of being in the top-five in the
world by 2023 in furniture production.
85
What is the importance of adhesive
production for the sector? How do
you evaluate yourself at this point?
As in every market, the competition
in the market is increasing
day by day, but thanks to the
continuation of its development in
Sefox innovative products, Sefox
adhesives are found one step
ahead of their competitors and
gained a follow-up audience and
trust. Significant investments in
water-based and aerosol production,
which are growing day
by day in the adhesive sector,
will play an important role in the
future for Sefox.
As a manufacturer of adhesives,
which environmental factors do
you pay attention to?
As a result of a long R&D studies,
Sefox Contact adhesives, which
are indicative of the importance
of human health, removed the
Toluene which caused occupational
diseases from the production
stage and offered the new
Toluene-free formulation, which
was open for 15 minutes. Sefa
produces chemical adhesives by
paying attention to environmental
health. Toxic chemicals such as
benzene, ethylene and dichloride
are not used.
Raw materials used in the production
of adhesives should not
harm human health and nature.
Hazardous wastes generated
during production are destroyed
by our company without damaging
the nature. There is no waste
in anyway.
Which countries do you export to?
Do you have any target market?
We export to more than 65
countries in the world. In a sense,
every country in the world is our
target market.
Could you tell us about the fairs
you attend?
We take part in 3 international
fairs namely Interzum China, Interzum
Germany and ISPA America
outside Turkey, and 2 in domestic
market namely Sleep Well Expo
Istanbul and Imob.

Frankfurt:
The hotspot
for hightech
textiles
Technical textiles for all applications and a wide range of textile
technologies: from 14 to 17 May 2019, Techtextil brings together
more exhibitors from even more countries than before.
Around four months before it
opens its doors, Techtextil is
almost fully booked, exceeding
once again booking levels for the
previous event at the same time
of year. With its trend theme,
‘Urban Living – City of the Future’,
the leading international trade
fair also takes a look ahead to
see how technical textiles will
shape urban life in the future.
“Every two years, Techtextil
mirrors the range of applications
for textile materials. Leading
international experts from the
most diverse industries – be they
from architecture, the automotive
industry, medicine, the fashion
industry or personal protection
– come together at Techtextil in
search of lightweight, durable and
sustainable materials”, says Olaf
Schmidt, Vice President Textiles
and Textile Technologies, Messe
Frankfurt.
The suppliers at Techtextil represent
the complete spectrum of
technical textiles and nonwovens.
There is a significant increase in
the number of suppliers in the
fields of technology, as well as
fibres and yarns. Suppliers of
woven fabrics, coated textiles
and functional apparel textiles
are also strongly represented. All
areas of application for textile
materials are covered. In particular,
representatives from industry,
architecture and construction, the
fashion and clothing industry, the
87
automotive sector, aerospace,
Textile solutions for life in the city
of the future
In collaboration with ‘Creative
Holland’, the Dutch creative
industries, Techtextil is dedicating
an exhibition space to life in the
city of the future with the ‘Urban
Living – City of the Future’ special
event. According to the United
Nations*, nearly 70 percent of all
people are expected to be living
in metropolises and megacities by
2050. This poses new challenges
for living and mobility concepts,
as well as food supplies and
health services provision. Functional
apparel, with smart functions
for example, could also play
an even more important role in
people’s everyday lives in the future.
The Techtextil and Texprocess
exhibition area will be presenting
88
examples of textile applications.
In addition, an accompanying
complementary programme will
offer insights into the industry.
New: Techtextil Forum provides an
open platform for exchange
On all four days, the trade fair will
offer a new format of lectures, discussions
and interactive sessions
with the Techtextil Forum. The
forum, which replaces the Techtextil
Symposium, will take place
directly in exhibition Hall 4.1 and
all Techtextil participants will be
able to access it free of charge.
Trade visitors can look forward
to contributions in the following
thematic areas: sustainability,
digital transformation, smart textiles,
urban textiles, composites,
and technical textiles in medical
technology. In addition, both the
Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress
(GFC) and the textiles competence
centre at the General Association
of the German Textile and
Fashion Industry (Gesamtverband
der deutschen Textil- und Modeindustrie
e. V.) are organising a
thematic block.
Focus on sustainability
Sustainability is one of the central
themes of the upcoming Techtextil
and Texprocess. For the first time,
the two fairs will be showcasing
their exhibitors’ efforts towards
sustainability. The Techtextil and
Texprocess Innovation Awards give
prizes for sustainable textile innovations
and processing approaches.
In addition, the Texprocess
Forum will offer a thematic block
exclusively around the theme of
sustainability in the textile and
89
fashion industry, with an offshoot
of Fashionsustain, Messe Frankfurt’s
conference about sustainable
textile innovations.
Techtextil and Texprocess are
sharing an exhibition hall for the
first time
In May 2019, Techtextil and the
parallel Texprocess will be sharing
an exhibition hall for the first
time. In Hall 4.1, Techtextil will be
showcasing some of the suppliers
of woven, laid web, braided and
knitted fabrics, coated textiles,
and nonwovens, as well as selected
suppliers of textile machines.
Suppliers of functional apparel
textiles and the ‘Digital Textile
Micro Factory’ mark the transition
to Texprocess, which will be
showcasing different production
lines for clothing, shoes, and the
processing of technical textiles.
In addition to these, exhibitors
for product preparation, finishing,
textile logistics, internal material
flow and textile refinement, as
90
well as providers of sewing solutions,
will be there. In the shared
hall, visitors will get an insight
into the entire production process,
from raw material to finished
product.
In parallel with Techtextil, Texprocess,
the leading trade fair for the
processing of technical textiles
and nonwovens (14 to 17 May
2019), will provide insights into
all the stages in textile processing,
including textile finishing and
digital printing. Texprocess is also
recording an outstanding level of
registrations, above those for the
last event.
manufacturing on the other.
Pointing out that they had
modern manufacturing facilities
with quality control system and
manufacturing equipment at world
standards, Ilknur Karakas, Foreign
Trade Manager of Yapı Lider
Kimya highlights that they would
be more active with their product
variety and projects in the exclusive
interview she granted to us.
Full text of the interview follows:
Which sectors have you been
serving since your first day in
business?
Yapı Lider Kimya is one of the
leading companies of the adhesive
industry thanks to its product
experience, customer-oriented approach,
and especially for its high
quality products. The usage areas
of our products are rather widespread.
Our adhesives can stick
everything no matter soft or hard.
93
Its inflammable feature and application
with spray gun provide
usage easiness in manufacturing
lines. For this reason our products
are preferred especially in the soft
furniture industry. Our adhesives
are also widely used in the construction,
isolation, automotive,
shoe, and etc. industries.
Would you mention about your
production capacity and product
variety?
We have modern manufacturing
facilities with quality control system
and manufacturing equipment
at world standards. Our capacity
has constantly been increasing by
realizing distinctive progresses in
innovative product development
with basic ideas as innovation,
R&D and branding, and improving
existing products, and programming
new projects. Responding
the demands immediately no
matter where it comes from,
foreseeing any possible problems
and offering solutions are the
main features differing us from our
competitors.
What are the basic features of your
products?
The most important feature of our
products is being inflammable
and non-glare. These annihilate
the risks to happen during application.
Thanks to its economical
usage it is cost effective.
94
Would you mention about the
usage areas of adhesives in the
mattress industry?
Recording a continuous development
through R&D and
design, the adhesives are an
inevitable product group for
the mattress industry. It’s an indispensible
item to stick layers
such as foam-to-foam, foamfelt,
foam-fabric, foam-quilting,
felt-felt-fabric, etc.
What about your laboratory and
R&D studies?
The controls and quality
controls of raw materials and
produced materials are regularly
done. We make the manufacturing
with the raw materials
which are approved by our quality
control department. The products
that are approved by the quality
control department can proceed to
packaging and packing process.
The quality control process is a
system that we place extreme
importance. Our R&D department
has constantly been working on
improving the current products,
to develop new environmentally
friendly products and to form new
projects.
How do you evaluate the
adhesives industry in line with the
development of technology?
For the development of technology
is not limited only to one
area it positively every up-todate
changes affect the adhesive
95
industry in direct proportion. Our
products provide usage comfort
with technologic developments.
They can be used confidently in
manufacturing fields. They provide
labor comfort and saves money
and time.
What is the importance of
adhesives for the sector? How do
you evaluate yourselves at this
point?
Adhesives are an indispensable
part of the manufacturing industry.
For this reason Yapı Lider Kimya
family has been continuing its operations
in 51 countries including
Turkey mainly with PO-MAX and
with other brands. We are grateful
for the manufacturers who prefer
PO-MAX, CREAFOM, F-X and other
brands of our company.
What kinds of environmental
factors do you care as an adhesive
manufacturing company?
We are trying to take precautions
in order not to allow the nature to
be damaged for personal interests.
Developing environmentally
friendly products is the first priority
of our R&D department.
Which countries do you export? Do
you have any target markets?
We have exports to 51 countries
in Europe, America, Asia and Africa
and to Russia. We are targeting
to export mainly to export to
South American markets and to all
areas of the world.
Would you mention about the fairs
you participate in?
We care to be as an exhibitor or
visitors at world fairs held especially
in the furniture and mattress
industries. We take part in all
fairs such as ISPA and Interzum
which are considered as the most
important events of this sector.

Wood and forestry
products industry
in Turkey
The Turkish furniture sector,
which has a very high locality
ratio, has been generating a
foreign trade surplus for the last
15 years, and the local furniture
sector started to increase these
figures more because the furniture
sector is one of the fastest
growing sectors in the last 17
years and that reaching $10
billion in exports is among their
2023 targets.
Furniture production in Turkey
dates back to the 19th century
and was done in small workshops
as artisan production.
However, by the rapid globalization
and all other aspects,
present furniture industry is
becoming a fashion sector.
In Turkey, furniture is produced
both in workshops and industrial-scale
manufacturing units.
Furniture production is highly

fragmented among a large
number of small workshops.
These small workshops play an
important role in producing hand
carved and handmade furniture.
Workshops are flexible establishments
in nature and have
enough capacity and labor force
to expand their production line
in order to supply large orders.
Turkey has a total land area
of close to 80 million ha. Forests
cover 27.2% (21,2 million
ha) of the country land area.
Turkey has one of the richest
floras in the world with 9,000
herbaceous and woody plant
species. The major tree species
used for roundwood production
are Calabrian pine (Pinus
brutia), Crimean pine
(Pinus nigra), Scots
pine (Pinus silvestris),
beech (Fagus
orientalis), fir
(Abies bornmülleriana/alba/nordmaniana),
spruce (Picea orientalis),
cedar (Cedrous libani), and
oak (Quercus).
Turkey’s large milling and wood
manufacturing industry is in a
position to supply wood products
to regional markets in the
Middle East, particularly those
countries that lack a wood
manufacturing sector
sector of their own. Turkey is
also in a competitive position
to supply semi-processed wood
products and furniture to the EU
as a result of its relatively lower
labor costs. Turkish forest product
based industries, such as the
panel and furniture industries,
have increased their capacity
over the last decade, allowing
them to take advantage of
these regional opportunities.

Large-scale furniture firms produce
standard models by using
automated mass-production
techniques and most of their
production is oriented towards
export.
In accordance to data from
Turkish Statistical Institute (Turk-
Stat), in 2012 furniture production
was realized as 10,3 billion
Turkish Liras. According to the
recent General Census of Industry
and Business Establishments
106
(2012), the furniture sector employs
151.904 people and the
industry has 33.924 companies
manufacturing various furniture.
Moreover, capacity data of The
Union of Chambers of Commerce
and Commodity Exchanges
of Turkey (TOBB) reports 40
companies who have over 250
employees and 155 companies
who have over 100 employees.
Besides, Istanbul Chamber of
Industrys list of the top 500 industrial
establishments of Turkey
includes six furniture companies.
Furniture production in Turkey is
concentrated mainly in İstanbul,
Ankara, Bursa (İnegöl), Kayseri,
İzmir and Adana. The most
important furniture production
districts are İstanbul and the
region of Bolu-Düzce, which is famous
for its production of wood
products.
The well-known furniture-manufacturing
district in Turkey, called
“Siteler”, is located in Ankara.
The number of registered small
and medium sized enterprises
in “Siteler” is over 10,000. In
Ankara, there are many labor–intensive
small enterprises manufacturing
classical-handmade
furniture and there are about
10 major furniture manufacturers
who have mass-production
capabilities.
The wood industry is developing
rapidly in the Bursa-İnegöl area,
the third most important furniture
production region, which
is surrounded by forest areas.
The furniture industry of the
İnegöl area is small sized but
has great potential to improve
itself. Another important furniture
region is Kayseri, which has
large capacity for the production
of sofa beds, couch beds and
107
seven of the twenty two largest
manufacturers of Turkey are
established here. İzmir also has
a furniture production districts
called “Karabağlar and Kısıkköy”
which supply furniture to the
Aegean Region.
Production
In Turkey, furniture production
can be classified in accordance
with materials used as
wooden furniture (massive and
veneered), metal furniture and
others. Wooden furniture has
a major share in total furniture
production. As it is known for
good quality furniture, the types
of wood used and plywood
inputs have to be taken into
consideration. The main types of
wood used in the manufacture
of massive furniture in Turkey are
ash, beech, oak, pine, linden
and mahogany. In veneered
furniture, oak, beech, walnut and
mahogany are used.
Turkish furniture factories use the
latest technologies in producing
furniture, which is always up to
world standards. Since 1990 the
application of advanced technology
and the use of CNC benches
in the Turkish furniture industry
have been increasing. Today, all
of the large enterprises in the
furniture sector use CNC benches.
Most companies are equipped
with modern machinery which
allows the production of good,
export-quality products. Quality
control starts from the stage
when the raw material is produced
and continues till the end
of the packaging process. Most
of the companies have already
obtained ISO 9000 certificates
and other required quality certificates.
The large scale firms comply
with world standards in their
packaging processes. In packaging
PE, PP, foam, poly-urethane
and cardboard boxes are used.
Many of the large companies
have special packaging sections.
As with many other consumer
products, furniture production is
sensitive to changes in fashion.
Since furniture design is an
important aspect of marketing,
Turkish designers are constantly
following consumer preferences
in foreign markets and introduce
new designs and make model
108
variations and improvements.
Turkish furniture manufacturers
and exporters are aware of the
fact that market trends and consumer
behavior play an important
role in the development and
design of new products. Since
Turkey has a strong textile industry,
Turkish furniture manufacturers
have the advantage of being
able to use and to monitor a
wide range of colorful new fabric
collections as upholstery.
Exports
Turkey’s furniture exports have
had an upward trend in recent
years. In the last ten years,
exports of Turkish furniture increased
from US $ 684,5 million
in 2005 to US $ 2,2 billion in
2015. This is mainly due to
improvements in capacity, quality and design. The export figure for
2014 was US $ 2,4 billion, representing an increase of 8% with respect
to the previous year. On the other hand, the export figure for
2015 was US $ 2,2 billion, representing a decrease of 7% compared
to the previous year. Main export
products were: wooden furniture for
bedrooms (excl. seats) wooden furniture
(excl. for
offices, kitch-
109
ens and bedrooms, and seats)
and seats for motor vehicles. In
2015, Turkey exported furniture
to 201 countries throughout
the world. The main markets
for furniture exports were Iraq,
Libya, Azerbaijan, Germany, and
France. In recent years, Turkish
furniture companies have been
establishing showrooms and
depots in increasing numbers
in most of these countries. The
Turkish contracting sector is one
of the major sectors exporting
services. Turkish contractor companies
who have undertaken
construction work abroad have
completed many housing complexes,
tourism projects, hospitals
and health center projects,
most of which were decorated
with Turkish furniture.
Turkish furniture is designed and
made from the highest quality
materials to ensure comfort,
performance and attractive
appearance for a very long life.
Different styles are produced
such as classical, traditional and
contemporary. With its designers
and architects combined with
its flexible production capacity,
the Turkish furniture industry is
able to satisfy the requirements
of all individual markets all over
the world.
Today, with all these aspects of
the furniture industry, Turkey is
among the most promising furniture
suppliers in the world.

Eximbank to provide TL
loans for non-SME firms
to boost exports
Türk Eximbank, which provides
loans in local currency to small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
exporting in Turkish lira, will from
now on grant loans to non-SME
companies as well.
In a statement, Trade Minister Ruhsar
Pekcan said significant efforts
have been made in recent years to
improve trade in local currencies.
She pointed out that the share of
the Turkish lira in exports rose from
4.5 percent in the first two months
of 2018 to 4.8 percent in the first
two months of this year.
Pekcan said Türk Eximbank has
continued to provide TL loans to
exporting SMEs with affirmative
interest rates compared to market
figures. She added that the bank
channeled Turkish lira sources to
SMEs in August 2017 and provided
additional credit support of about
TL 10 billion to SMEs, including
TL 2.1 billion in 2017 and TL 7.7
billion in 2018, adding the said
support will continue to increase in
2019.
The trade minister said that Türk
Eximbank’s loan facility in Turkish
lira was planned to be diversified
and increased by taking into
consideration the importance and
growing potential of trade in local
currency in the upcoming period.
On providing loans in the local
currency to non-SME companies,
Pekcan said: “For this purpose, the
current Turkish lira loan program for
SMEs exporting in the local currency
will continue.”
She said for non-SME companies,
on the other hand, a previously announced
loan program will be put
into operation as of April 22, 2019.
The loan will have a one-year
maturity period and a six-month
interest rate payment based on
the Central Bank of the Republic
of Turkey’s (CBRT) daily weighted
average funding rate. “We believe
this opportunity will contribute to
the development of trade in local
currencies,” said Pekcan.

Turkey’s consumer
confidence climbs 6.9%
in April from March
Turkish consumers’ confidence in
the economy rose by 6.9% in April,
the country’s statistical authority
announced. The consumer confidence
index stood at 63.5 this
month, up over four points compared
to March, according to data
from the Turkish Statistical Institute
(TurkStat) and Central Bank of the
Republic of Turkey (CBRT).
In April, the general economic situation
expectation index increased
by 4.8% to 82.4 points from 78.6
in March, as the number of consumers
expecting a better general
economic situation in the next 12
months rose. The financial situation
expectation of households index
increased by 5.1% compared to
the previous month to 82.2 in April,
indicating an increase in the ratio
of people expecting a better financial
situation in the next 12-month
period. The unemployment expectation
index rose 7.8% compared
to the previous month to 63.5
points, indicating a rise in the ratio
of people expecting a decrease in
the number of unemployed persons
in the next 12 months.
The probability of saving index
increased by 18.3% from 22.0 in
March to 26.0 in April. This increase
shows that the possibility of consumer
savings in the next 12-month
period increased from the previous
month. On nearly 20 economic
and financial criteria, consumers’
assessments and expectations for
the next 12 months are measured
in monthly tendency surveys.
The index is calculated from the
survey results on a range of 0-200,
with above 100 indicating an
optimistic outlook, and below 100
a pessimistic outlook. In April, the
index for general economic situation
expectations stood at 82.4,
surging 4.8% from 78.6 in March.
In 2018, the consumer confidence
index value hovered between 72.7
and 57.6 -- the highest being in
July and the lowest in October. The
country’s statistical authority will
release the next survey results on
May 21.

Progressing
story of
adhesives used
in mattress
manufacturing
Would you prefer
water-based or
hot melt? Where
does the Turkish
market stand at this
industry? Pros and
cons…
Adhesives have always been
used to bond the various mattress
components together. However,
as a result of these changes,
adhesives’ role in the manufacturing
process has become even
more important. For example,
new materials, such as fibers and
foam types, are difficult to bond
together. This has meant that the
adhesives used must now possess
both increased bonding strengths
and increased application use.
As a matter of fact, the mattress
industry has been transferred
from simple spring construction
to more complex construction and
new materials in recent years. The
changes included more than fibers
and foam types. They have now
increased in roll-coating process
and all-foam units. The increased
use of foam comfort layers in
beds, the rising popularity of
all-foam models and the intense
competition within this just-intime
industry has heightened
the demand for fast-curing glues.
They help manufacturers move
product rapidly off the production
floor and into roll-pack or bagging
machines—and onto the delivery
truck, en route to customers. The
mattress story from the smallest
raw material to the full production
line is a combination of values to
end up with the best mattresses.
115
When it comes to putting a mattress
together, adhesives play an
essential role in making things
stick. Changes in mattress construction
have required adhesives
to change their tack. Mattress
components now are more varied
than ever and bed makers have
come to depend on two main
classes of glues: water-based and
hot melt to hold it all together.
Whether one-component or
two-component chemistries, roll-on
or spray applications, today’s
improved adhesives offer faster
drying times, better bonding
strength, cost efficiencies, improved
flexibility and increased
application ease, industry suppliers
say.
When it comes to speed, the latest
water-based formulations give
hot melts a run for their money
and are faster drying than ever.
But the two glues have their own
distinct uses in mattress and foundation
construction, suppliers say.
What’s in store for the future?
Ever faster, automated production
lines. Adhesives suppliers predict
that, whether manufactured on
an automated production line or
hand assembled and sprayed, the
demand for compressed and roll-
116
packed mattresses will continue
to grow, and, with that, the need
for a high-tack, flexible bond with
quick drying times will continue.
Also, the industry is now using
faster and more automated production
lines in addition to more
practical and better quality auxiliary
materials in order to keep up
with rising demand.
Adhesives are among the important
auxiliaries that the sector use
during manufacturing and these
materials have always been used
to bond the various mattress components
together. However, as a
result of the construction changes,
adhesives’ role in the manufacturing
process has become even
more important.
For example, new materials, such
as fibers and foam types are
difficult to bond together. So, the
adhesives used must now possess
increased bonding strengths
and increased application use.
Furthermore, from the standpoint
of speed, adhesives need to offer
fast drying times, more flexibility
117
and cost efficiencies. Hot melts
are one type of adhesive in
particular that have been able to
keep up with mattress manufacturing
changes. For instance, hot
melt adhesives have fast holding
power and don’t need drying
time. These adhesives are popular
in bonding foams, pocket coil
assemblies and bonding fabrics
and fibers.
When you think of the process of
manufacturing a mattress, the use
of hot melt adhesives may not
immediately spring to mind, yet
these adhesives can be used in
many different aspects of mattress
production including:
•Laminating layers of foam
•Fixing insulation layers
•Joining blocks of foam
•Fixing fabrics
•Fixing pillow-tops
Choosing the right application
system can make a big difference
to the cost and they can be modified
to suit specific projects. Hot
melt adhesives make assembling
mattresses quicker and easier.
Suppliers also agree that these
adhesives and specific application
118
systems can help reduce the cost
of the manufacturing process. The
experts have examined enough
mattress assembly lines to know
that slow production processes
means money wasted. So, when
applying these materials, quality
spray guns or automatic applicators
can save significant time and
money. Because they are easy to
handle, many manufacturers use
adhesives for joining foam around
mattress springs, attaching cushioning
foam and insulation to the
interior of the mattress body and
keeping pillow top cushioning and
upholstery fabrics in place.
That’s important with the more
complex mattresses being assembled
today. Customers want
features like additional comfort
layers of gels and foams, which
need to be carefully attached
to the interior mattress structure
using a fastening system that is
non-toxic.
Hot-melt adhesives have a number
of advantages for the mattress
manufacturing process including:
•Ability to handle high volume
applications
•Non-flammability
•Not requiring special ventilation
•Fast drying time
Meanwhile, water-based adhesive
suppliers promote recent product
innovations, which focus on faster
dry times and innovative application
methods that are faster and
more economical.
We have interviewed some
Turkish adhesive manufacturers
and suppliers to have an indebt
look over the industry so that the
importers and exporters may find
a better way for themselves in this
lucrative and very fast-developing
market.
119
Quality of mattress
fabrics directly affect
sleep quality
In line with growing mattress industry, fabric manufacturers fire up
their innovation efforts.
Due to chaos of daily lives, fast
consumption, haste to reach
somewhere and trying to focus
on several points concurrently
we cannot spare time to rest.
Night sleep is the most suitable
period to be refreshed, but most
of us awaken tired and exasperated.
At this point, the innovations
made by the mattress manufacturers
and their suppliers
who strive to improve the quality
of sleep, become a savior. In
2017 the most popular topic in
the mattress industry was based
on the choice of foam or latex. In
2018 we focused on spring and
fabric technologies. The following
is our assessment about the
most popular topics on mattresses
compiled from the interviews
we made with leading producers
of mattress fabrics in 2018.
Global warming affects seasons,
not the sleeps
In recent years, we started to
have hotter days in summer and
colder days in winter. There are
some other countries like ours
that were subject to unusual
climates during the year. Changing
climatic conditions may
cause some difficulties to enter
in sleep or shorten REM sleep
periods. It is possible to reduce
120
the effects of changing climate
but not so valuable as the direct
impacts of the fabrics used on
the mattresses.
At the end of these, innovative
products aiming to stabilize
the body temperature both in
winter and in summer has got
their place in product portfolio of
major manufacturers.
Are you sure that you got rid of all
stresses of the day?
Technology covers all stages of
our lives. We had been encircled
by technologic devices all
day long and spending our time
in enclosed spaces. So, static
electric accumulated during
the day triggers stresses and
negative emotions. Uncontrolled
stress spoils the quality of life
and sleep. Getting away from
these all-negative conditions for
a comfortable sleep is possible
only with better fabrics for
mattresses.
The materials that are used in
the production of smart textiles
are begun to be used in the
production of mattress fabrics.
Thanks to carbon fibers used in
the production, more flexible,
waterproof and static-electric-free
fabrics are obtained.
Some natural materials, like
the seed of cherry, can produce
121
positive effects on brain and
imaginations.
New innovations to protect hygiene
in mattresses
Cleanliness of mattresses is hard
to manage. Mites are hazardous
for health; they are invisible,
fed with human skin cells are
also hard to get rid of. There
are several products that help to
fight with mites but people do
not have enough time to spare
for cleaning their mattresses.
Anti-bacterial mattress fabrics
come to our rescue at this point.
Hygiene maximizes in the
fabrics the contain bacteria that
supports immune systems of
the body. They protect people
against microorganisms such
as bacteria, mold, fungi and
against stains.
Skin repairing effect
Human skin is highly prone to
be irritated and deformed. So,
tissues that contact our skins are
important. The fabrics that prevent
fatting and celluloids by facilitating
the circulation of blood
in veins offer healthy outlook
on skins were among the best
innovations of the year. Those
fabrics that protect against
wrinkling on skin by keeping the
moistening balance of skin were
among the successful innovations
of the year in 2018.

on the surface of a mattress
over time, due to the compression
of materials by the human body.
Bonnell: A knotted, round-top,
hourglass-shaped steel wire coil.
When laced together with crosswire
helicals, these coils form the
simplest innerspring unit, also
referred to as a Bonnell.
Border: The vertical side or edge
of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt
borders are constructed by
stitching together the ticking, foam
or other filling materials and a
backing material. Commonly quilted
upholstery and insulating materials
(felt, urethane or other resilient
materials), and covered on the
top and sides with ticking and on
the bottom with a dust cover. It
is an important part of a bed set
Bulletin 117, which specifies a
vertical flame testing procedure for
bedding and furniture component
materials. Foam referred to as “Cal
117 foam” has passed this test.
Carbon: The principal hardening
element in steel. The higher the
carbon content, the harder the metal
and the more temper it will take,
thus giving longer “memory.”
as an insulator. May be glued or
sandwiched between plastic netting
to help hold it together.
Coil count: The number of coils in
an innerspring unit. Though the
count can effect weight distribution,
it is not the determining factor
for firmness. The count is usually
based on the number of coils in a
full-size unit.
Coils: The individual wire springs
that form an innerspring unit. See
124
Hourglass, Continuous and Offset
Coils.
Coir pad: An insulator pad made
surface, generally consisting of a
mattress resting on a metal mechanism.
Also called “sleep sofa” or
“sofa sleeper.”
Convoluted foam: Better known as
“egg-crate” foam that is specially
cut to produce hills and valleys,
giving gentle softness and more
surface comfort. Foam surface
treatment is available in multiple
patterns.
Cornell test: Devised by Cornell
University School of Hotel/Motel
Administration. Designed to test
cosmetic performance of bedding
sets, such as body impression or
support firmness. Two round surfaces
are pounded into the finished
product 100,000 times and checked
periodically for failure or changes.
Corner guards: Molded plastic or
metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings
secured to foundation corners
to prevent material damage from
the bed frame.
Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett
machine which combs cotton and
other fiber binders into a continuous
web or layer. Several such
layers combined are called cotton
“batt”. For compressed cotton felt,
thick layers of garnetted cotton
fiber are mechanically compressed
to reduce body impressions.
Cotton linters: The short fibers
adhering to the seed after the long
staple fiber has been removed in
the ginning process. Used in making
cotton felt.
Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning
or garnetting. These shorter
staple cotton fibers are blended
with linters to produce cotton felt.
Mattresses with a half-inch
crown are a half-inch thicker at the
center than at the edges.
Cushioning: Materials that lie
above the insulator and below the
fabric covering in an innerspring
mattress. These materials are typically
combinations of polyurethane
foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade
fibers.
Damask: Woven ticking produced
on a loom that has yarns running
at 90-degree angles to each other,
125
the warp and the weft. The damask
design is woven into the fabric
rather than printed on the surface.
Density: A measure of weight per
cubic volume, usually expressed
in pounds per cubic foot. Often
referred to when discussing foam.
Double tempering: Heating of wire
components, usually in an oven, after
they have been given shape or
form and have been electronically
stress-relieved. Refers to tempering
coils as well as border rods and
helicals in a complete spring unit.
Dual-purpose: A broad term used
to include all sleep pieces, which
can be converted to other uses,
including: convertible sofas,
high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc.
See Convertible Sofa.
Dust cover: A woven or non-woven
fabric attached to the underside of
a foundation to prevent the collection
of dust inside. May also be
known as “sheeting” or “cambric.”
Edge guard: Generally an extra
component added to the edge of a
mattress and/or box spring to give
support on the sides.
Engineered edge support: A special
design where the coils on the
outer edge of an innerspring unit
are actually positioned under the
border rod. Most units have the
coils recessed from the edge, which
can contribute to a “roll out of bed”
feeling.
Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring
a raised, squared-off surface
finishing treatment filled with soft
comfort layers and attached to the
mattress upholstery at the tapeedge.
Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material
woven, knitted or felted of
any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often
referred to as “ticking” or mattress
fabric.
that is stitched together to better
retain compression.
Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade
or natural fibers (wool, silk,
etc.) that are garnetted, needled,
carded and/or bonded together.
Often used in quilting panels for
mattress tops.
used on the top of a foundation
instead of ticking. Commonly offers
non-skid characteristics.
Flanging: The process whereby a
strip of fabric is sewn to the edge
of the mattress cover and, in the
assembly process, secured to the
perimeter of the innerspring unit to
prevent the cover and filling materials
from shifting.
Foam foundation: Consists of a
built-up wood slat frame covered
with a sheet of cardboard or similar
material, topped with at least 2” of
foam and covered with ticking.
Foundation: Any base or support
for a mattress, sometimes used as
a generic term for box spring. A
foundation may be made entirely
126
of wood or a combination of wood
and steel or steel springs. See Box
Spring and Foam Foundation.
Futon: A Japanese-style mattress
construction, consisting of a cover
and filling material, which is typically
cotton but can be innerspring
and/or foam.
Garnetting: A mechanical process
whereby short cotton fibers and/
or other fibers are combed into a
specific orientation and formed into
a thin web, which are then layered
to create a batting used as an upholstery
material. See Cotton Felt.
Gauge, coil: A measurement of the
diameter of the steel wire used in
coil construction. Wire gauge for
innerspring coils range from 12.5
to 17. The higher the gauge, the
thinner the wire.
Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic
foam that is infused with beads or
swirls of gel during the foam pouring
process.
Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle
tail or hog hair, which has been
processed and curled for use as a
mattress or upholstery filler.
Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic
sometimes associated
with worn out or low-end mattresses.
When weight is placed in the
center, the corners tend to rise and
bow in response to deep compression
much like a hammock. Terms
“dish” and “sagging” also used to
describe this phenomenon.
Hand: Term used to describe the
touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft,
smooth, etc.).
Hand-tied: The process of
hand-lacing the coils in a box
spring together with twine. Seldom
used, this process has been
replaced with modern technology
and new designs.
Headboard: An upright unit of
wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered
material, to be attached at
the head of a bed, usually with the
bed frame.
Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated
wire used in the manufacture of
innerspring units to join individual
coils to each other and to the
border rod.
High-contour mattress: Measures
9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9”
thick is considered “standard”; over
13” thick is considered “custom.”
High riser: Usually a frame or sofa
with two mattresses of equal size
without a backrest. The frame
slides out with the lower bed and
rises to form a full bed or two
single beds.
Hog ring: Metal ring used to
secure the insulator and flange material
to the innerspring unit. Takes
its name from its similarity to the
metal ring in a hog’s nose.
Hourglass coils: Coils that taper
inward from top to middle and outward
from middle to bottom, thus
resembling an hourglass in shape.
Employed in bonnell and offset coil
designs.
Hybrid: Commonly used industry
term for a mattress that combines
an innerspring unit with specialty
foams such as visco-elastic or latex.
Ideal weight distribution: Equalization
of support in such a way
as to eliminate pressure points
that cause discomfort resulting in
tossing and turning. Best achieved
with coil on coil construction and
properly designed insulation and
cushioning material.
Innerspring unit construction (for
mattresses): The spring construction
used as the main support system
inside an innerspring mattress.
Some common types are: pocketed
(see Marshall) and all metal (i.e.,
bonnell, offset and continuous
wire).
Insulator: Any material used on top
and bottom of an innerspring unit
to prevent the upholstery layers
from cupping down into the coils.
Some common types are: a fiber
pad, non-woven fabric, netting,
wire mesh or foam pad.
Knit: A basic polyester or nylon
ticking fabric produced through a
knitting process (tricot) rather than
weaving. Designs are printed onto
the surface.
Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire
used to form helicals.
Latex: A flexible foam created from
a water dispersion of rubber, either
from the rubber tree (natural latex)
or a man-made, petroleum-based
product (synthetic latex). Most
latex used in mattresses today is
127
a combination of natural and synthetic
latex rubber.
LFK: An unknotted offset coil with
a cylindrical or columnar shape.
Link fabric: A wire foundation for
bedsprings, cots, studio couches,
sofabed mechanisms and gliders.
So called because the fabric is a
succession of metal links.
Marshall: A type of innerspring
construction in which thin gauge,
barrel-shaped, knotless coils are
encased in fabric pockets. Also
known as “pocketed coils.”
Mattress: A manufactured product
to sleep on, consisting of various
resilient materials covered with an
outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic
term “matrah” meaning to throw
down. Early Arabs traveled with
their bedding and threw it down on
the ground or floor at night.
Memory: The ability of tempered
steel, foam or some fabrics to
return to their original state after
being compressed or stretched.
Mesh: Plastic netting generally
stretched across the face of an
innerspring unit as an insulator.
Microcoils: A low-profile metal
spring unit, typically with individually
wrapped coils, used in the top
comfort layers of a mattress.
Molded foam core (for mattresses):
A core made of flexible foam
is made in molds and used as the
main support system in a foam
mattress.
Mounting: Attachment of a box
spring unit to a wood or metal
frame.
Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing
process for which high
strength, lightweight, non-woven
construction fabrics are produced.
These fabrics are produced by
garnetting fibers, entangling or
inner-locking these fibers together
by a series of needles and then
mechanically bonding or fusing
them together via heat to produce
a fabric without glue or binders.
Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing
process used to produce
insulator pads and non-woven
fabrics whereby loose, garnetted
fibers are inner-locked by a series
of “needles.” This process usually
requires additional bonding to
keep the fibers in place.
Offset coils: An hourglass type coil
on which portions of the top and
bottom convolutions have been
flattened. In assembling the innerspring
unit, these flat segments
of wire are hinged together with
helicals.
Orthopedic: Generalized term to
imply set gives proper postural
alignment and support. Should not
necessarily mean hard or board
feeling. Proper support with a
degree of comfort to contour to the
body is best.
Panel: The part of the ticking that
constitutes the top sleep surface of
a mattress, as well as the bottom
of a mattress on a two-sided bed.
128
Pedestal-type metal or wood bed
frame: A low-profile bed frame
with a solid pedestal base underneath
each side of the frame,
instead of legs.
Pillow-top mattress: A mattress
featuring a surface finishing treatment
where a separate encasement
of soft materials is attached
to the entire surface on top of
existing cover and upholstery.
Plus 4 edge: Two border rods
engineered with one inside of the
other and designed so that they
make the edge 4% firmer than
the balance of the sleep surface
to eliminate that “roll out of bed”
feeling and edge sag.
Pocketed coil: See Marshall.
Polyurethane foam: See Urethane
Foam.
Print: A ticking fabric, which can be
a woven or non-woven sheeting,
commonly of synthetic fiber composition,
on which a design has been
printed.
Quilting: The surface treatment in
which the cover, foam and/or other
fibers are sewn together, using
various stitch patterns on quilting
machinery, including scroll or
panel quilters (single needle) and
multi-needle quilters.
Resilience: Surface liveliness and
spring-back ability.
Rollator test: An approximately
230 lb., six-sided roller is passed
across a sleep set to determine the
structural strengths or weaknesses
of the set and components (i.e.,
foam or quilt failure, breaking of
helicals and coils). The industry
standard to duplicate the life of a
mattress is 100,000 passes.
Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal
bed/cot with a frame that folds
in half with the mattress when not
in use so it can be rolled away into
a closet (or elsewhere) for compact
storage.
Sheeting: a woven or non-woven
fabric other than knits that have a
degree of sizing and are somewhat
stiff.
Side rail: A metal or wood rail,
which hooks into the outside edges
of a headboard and footboard
to provide the support base for a
foundation and mattress.
Sisal: A product of the henequen
plant formed into a pad and used
as an insulator. Named after the.
small port of Sisal in Yucatan.
Slats: Narrow strips of wood used
to support the coils in the box
spring frame. Also used in a bedstead
to support the box spring.
Sleep Products Safety Council
hangtag: Used voluntarily by
bedding producers since 1987, the
safety hangtag program provides
critical consumer information about
the safe use of sleep products.
Manufacturers certify that they use
the tag only on mattresses that
meet the Federal Standard for the
Flammability of Mattresses and
Mattress Pads.The tag is available
in a hangtag or permanent label.
Smooth top: A plain surfaced
mattress, neither tufted nor quilted.
Also called button-free.
Spring wire: Wire made from high
carbon steel, characterized by
toughness, strength and ductility.
Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge
for bedding industry applications.
Steel unit construction (for box
springs): The spring construction
used as the main support system
inside a box spring.
Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.
Straightline deflection: Pertains to
mattress innerspring construction
and refers to the constant ratio
between stress and strain, weight
and movement. The benefit is
that constant support is provided
regardless of the weight applied.
No bottoming out of soft spots.
Basically it means that two people
of unequal weight, sleeping on the
same mattress, receive the same
support.
Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress
ticking consisting of a top layer,
bottom layer and filling material
knitted together and intermittently
stitched to keep the filling yarns
stable.
Super zoned box spring frame: A
support, generally wood, attached
longitudinally to the underside of
a foundation for added support
where the main body weight rests.
Another important structural point
is that the vertical slats are turned
on edge for added strength. This
is extremely important on queen
sizes and for 4-poster beds where
typically no center support is
provided. Also known as a “center
rail.”
Tape: Fabric material that closes
over the rough-sewn edge where
the top and bottom panels are
joined to the border of a mattress
or box spring.
Tape edge: A specified type of
sewing machine designed to stitch
binding tape around the top and
bottom edges of the mattress,
joining the panels with the border
and closing the mattress.
Tempering: Heat treatment of
wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished
by electric charge,
oven heat or both. Also known as
“stress relieved”.
Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses
and foundations. Common
types include: stretch knits, woven
damasks, knits and nonwovens.
Torsion bars: A type of spring system
used in box springs characterized
by square-shaped wire forms.
Trundle bed: A low bed that is
rolled under a larger bed. In
some constructions, the lower bed
springs up to form a full bed or two
single beds as in a high riser.
Tufting: Consists of passing twine,
cords or tape vertically through
the mattress from top to bottom,
knotting and securing the loops
thus formed with tufts, buttons, or
lacing. The purpose is to hold the
mattress filling in place.
Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used
to bridge the “mouth” of the coils
on an innerspring unit to prevent
“pocketing” of insulation down into
the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.”
Also helps to distribute the body
weight of a person.
Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically
foamed) flexible urethane
used for mattress cores and as a
cushioning material. As a core, it’s
the main support system. Generic
term covering both polyester and
polyether foams.
Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens
attached to the sides and sometimes
the ends of mattresses to
permit the passage of air. Unnecessary
with normal high quality
materials used today, except for
hospital type mattresses with wetproof
covers.
Visco-elastic foam: Also known
as “memory foam.” Slow recovery
urethane foams that are temperature
sensitive. They conform to
the body and distribute pressure
according to body heat and dynamics.
Waterbed: A sleep system
employing a water-filled vinyl
bladder as its primary support
system. Original models relied on
rigid framing to contain the vinyl
components and were known as a
“hardside”. Newer styles consist
of vinyl components (bladder and
liner) typically encased in foam and
made to look like a conventional
mattress, usually paired with a
regular upholstered foundation.
Also called a “softside” waterbed.
All versions are sometimes referred
to as “flotation beds.”
Welded grid top: Basic wire
welded into a lattice to which box
spring coils, formed wire or modules
are fastened. Offers even
weight distribution, yet allows
some flex and give.
129
Wood bed: A bed with a headboard
and footboard made of
wood, having side rails of wood or
metal that support the foundation
and mattress.
Wood frame (for box springs): The
wood frame in a box spring on
which the spring construction is
mounted.
Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous
woven ticking with colored stripes.
The style was referred to as “ACA”,
the traditional designation for
the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped
ticking that has mostly fallen out of
favor and is seldom produced.
