Catholic, Marist and Bedean principles and values form the basis of a holistic education at the College. We aim not to make the College great but to ensure every boy has the opportunity to be great, and we endeavour to develop young men of Catholic hearts and minds through the experiences the boys have in their time here at the College. St Bede’s is a College for all…a place where gospel values are practised to help form principled men; a learning environment where everyone achieves; a place that teachers want to come to because of the strength of the community; a place also, where boys can embrace spiritual, sporting, cultural and community activities, which all combined shape boys into men. That’s the priority and that is in our DNA. Boarding at St Bede’s College is a tradition that goes back to the 1920s. Our rich history and tradition provides an excellent foundation to embrace the challenges of the modern era and prepare our boys to be Catholic leaders wherever life takes them. Today’s boarders enjoy life away from home at the only single-sex Catholic boarding school in the South Island. Like many other organisations in Christchurch, our campus has been broken and tested. The demolition of the Chapel seriously challenged us. It was the single most important building at St Bede’s College, and had symbolised the heart and soul of the College ever since the third Rector, Father Gilbert, converted it from the gymnasium in 1929. Makeshift holy places in the last eight years, including the present facility, are a poor imitation and far from ideal. But we knew it was important to have this sacred space – a place where we gather in good times and in bad. The time has now come to build a new Chapel, which will be opened in September this year. After the hard years, there is real excitement and anticipation about the prospect of the rebuild which will significantly transform the campus. As well as the Chapel, we recently opened a new Food Technology and Visual Art block and have extended the Gymnasium. The Performing Arts Centre will also be opened later this year. Demand for the Selwynbased tournament emerged from the difficulty faced by most students to travel into Christchurch for the Canterbury schools’ competition. Rolleston College hosted the first meet last week with teams from Darfield High School, Ellesmere College and Lincoln High School in attendance. Moots debated by the teams included “that there should be a right to do wrong,” “that women are more suited to a political life than men” and “that a little learning is a dangerous thing”. Lincoln High won two debates, Ellesmere College and Rolleston College won one each. Organiser of the competition and Lincoln High english teacher Tania Roxborogh said the students had a lot of fun at the first meet. SELWYN TIMES “The aim of this inter-school competition is to foster whakawhanaungatanga (relationships) as well as offer a platform for our district’s debaters to hone their speaking and debating skills,” she said. It is hoped as more teams are formed, and the competition expands, debates will be more frequent with enough teams to hold finals. Teams will meet once a term at one of the four high schools.
