SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday June 26 2019 15 News AT THE Ploughing group to mark 150th anniversary next month • By Gordana Rodden THE LINCOLN Ploughing Association will celebrate its 150 th anniversary this July, making it one of the country’s oldest sports clubs. It is believed the Lincoln group was formed in 1869 by the local farmers’ club. Keen participation was amassed over time with about 250 members being part of the association on the eve of World War 1. The association went into a recess over this period with many members sent overseas into battle. No competitions were held during the Great Depression or world wars and membership only started to pick up again after 1945. Ploughing has been a generational sport. Lincoln Ploughing Association chairman John Stalker took up ploughing not long after leaving school, with his son later following in his footsteps. The late Nicola Jones (nee Smith) followed in the footsteps of her father, using his gear when she started out. Jones excelled in the sport, representing New Zealand in Germany in 1997. Stalker said there were always STRONG: John Stalker competing on his vintage tractor, he took up ploughing not long after finishing school. a few women in ploughing, but Jones had been a standout and her death was a terrible loss for her family and the community. The New Zealand Ploughing Association is working with young farmers’ clubs across the country in an attempt to involve young people in the sport and ensure it continues. The inclusion of the first contemporary class at the 2019 LAUGH INTERNATIONAL COMEDY NIGHT New Zealand ploughing championships in May provided an opportunity for novice ploughers to compete with others of their level. The Lincoln Ploughing Association will celebrate its 150- year anniversary with an event in the paddock on the corner of Springs Rd and Tancreds Rd on July 6, near the site of the association’s first meeting. Matariki was always a time to remember those who have become whetu (stars), to make connections between the rangi (sky) and the whenua (land), to celebrate and rejoice. There are numerous stories of ‘Matariki’ giving perspectives and conveying differing versions that are part of a narrative about a group of stars seen above the horizon. The narratives located in these works relate to the land and sky, above and below us, on to the place we are located. We can stop and look upward and see the stories in action, moving from one group of whetu to another each bearing its own relationship to the whole cosmology.
