Clive’s inventiveness took over and he transformed old bike parts into two tandems. He stored the tandems at his business, Stewarts Gully Mini Golf and before long a couple asked to hire them. Clive who has a business background realised unique bikes could be a business opportunity. The Christchurch earthquakes hit entertainment businesses hard, as people did not venture out. Clive lost 60% patronage overnight. He decided to close the business, storing the bikes. A while later a holiday programme organiser rang to book a session of mini golf and bike riding. With the mini golf business closed, Clive agreed to take the bikes to Spencer Park for the children. It was the beginning of Pedalmania. Clive now has two trailers loaded with unusual bikes. Pedalmania frequently provides entertainment for parties and community events like A&P shows. He travels throughout Selwyn and beyond. He even has a booking for 2020 in Central Otago. Many requests are referrals with business having doubled each year for the first four. You may have seen the bikes at Selwyn District Council’s summer Picnics in the Park or at a school fair or visit. “As active prizes are popular these days, a Pedalmania party is often a competition prize,” advises Clive who says it is all about having fun – for the children, adults and himself. Novel bike ideas come from friends, research, and others who make suggestions. All the inventions are thoroughly tested for safety and durability. One child suggested a bike with a steering wheel so Clive now has one on each trailer. Another innovation was sparked by a parent who wanted to watch their child pedalling. This tandem has a rear adult bike and front child’s bike. The adult steers and brakes. Clive says ‘Bob’ is a popular bike. It has an eccentric back wheel which goes up and down as you ride. One bike makes you look like a Kangaroo. Its pedals go round together rather than opposite each other like a normal bike. The ‘Bendy’ bike is a favourite with adults. It pivots under the saddle and at the front wheel, so the front half can go in one direction while the back half goes in another. Also fun is the bike you pedal backwards to go forwards. As a result of a viral Internet post, the reverse steering bike is requested the most. When you turn left, the bike goes right, presenting a challenge only a few have mastered. It took Clive 12 days to learn how to ride it. People say Pedalmania is successful because everyone is equal – male, female, young and old. All can join in. “A friend once told me I’d never go out of business because I sell happiness. People often tell me they’ve had heaps of fun,” adds Clive.
