Award for elderly care group • By Gordana Rodden A LINCOLN programme that helps combat loneliness and isolation among elderly people was recognised at the Volunteering Canterbury awards ceremony last week. Community Care Lincoln services development coordinator Anita Brockhouse said everyone involved in the programme, known as Homeshare, was “absolutely rapt” with the award. “Our volunteers put in a lot of work, and for them to be recognised is just wonderful.” The programme caters for elderly and health affected people in need of companionship and social interaction. Ten returning clients meet in Lincoln every Tuesday from 10am-3pm for morning tea, lunch and activities such as quizzes, walks, and guest speakers – all for free. “My favourite day in the office is Tuesday because I can hear the gales of laughter coming down the corridor from the Homeshare group,” said Ms Brockhouse. Each volunteer works on average three of the four Tuesday’s a month, with many MILESTONE: The Homeshare group celebrating the fifth anniversary. of them helping out every week. They come from all walks of life, with different experiences, interests and strengths. “The volunteers actually get a lot out of it as well, it’s mutually beneficial and more like a family having fun together.” Ms Brockhouse said what made the Homeshare programme standout was the individualised attention offered to everyone. There was generally one volunteer per client, meaning each person’s unique needs were catered for. Volunteer co-ordinator Sue Silcock said the ratio ensured each client spent some quality time in conversation. Some with hearing or memory problems found it hard to initiate communication, making the personalised interactions invaluable. “It makes them feel valued and gives them all a voice. Our main goal is to make sure the session is personalised. They don’t come in and have to fit into a group, the group is there to embrace their individuality,” said Ms Silcock. Time spent at Homeshare often provided some time out for client’s carers, which Ms Brockhouse said was an important but hidden aspect of the programme. The group celebrated their five-year anniversary earlier this month and three of the clients have been in the programme since the beginning. Identity of cat shooter remains unknown • By Sophie Cornish THE TRAIL to find the person who has been shooting cats in Prebbleton has gone dry. Two-year-old Riko, who lives on Hodgens Rd, was shot on June 10 and lost an eye as a result of his injuries. A police spokeswoman said “inquiries were made in the neighbourhood.” “However, there are no further lines of inquiry at this time and the matter has been filed. Should further information come to light this would be looked into and actioned appropriately,” she said.
