This case-oriented panel will review simple to complex
methods of thumb reconstruction for congenital and
post-traumatic thumb absence. The cases presented
will illustrate key principles in thumb reconstruction.
Algorithms for optimal thumb reconstruction will be
presented.

118 Outcomes of Neve Decompression
This course will combine a review of outcomes
measurements for nerve decompression surgery and an evidence
based review of the outcomes that are achieved. It

This course deals with the etiology, diagnosis and
treatment of degenerative arthritis of the basal joint of
the thumb. Treatment modalities will be discussed
including arthroscopy, metacarpal osteotomy, arthrodesis,

The surgical outreach to help children in third world
countries provides children with new options for their
futures. It provides inspiration, challenges and meaning
for the Hand Surgeon.
Dr. Van Beek has served as President of the AAHS,
ASPN, ASRM and PSEF. He has traveled to numerous
countries and locations performing Hand and
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in under served areas or
teaching centers. His experience serves as an impetus
for him to encourage others to help provide care for
children whose futures are altered because of their
hands. His challenge is for health care providers to go
beyond their “comfort zone” something he considers
the “danger zone”.
