There’s a great article on page 40 which<br />
features our wonderful friend Jenny Neaverson,<br />
who was diagnosed with cancer 18 months<br />
ago. Due to her immense bravery, positivity and<br />
selflessness since her diagnosis, Jenny was<br />
nominated by her friends to attend an Ascot<br />
Ladies Day at Nutters, sponsored by Revilo<br />
Homes. Jenny is a true inspiration to everyone<br />
who knows her.<br />
We wish all the residents of <strong>Heywood</strong> and<br />
<strong>Hopwood</strong> a very happy Summer. Look out<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />
1 tbsp olive oil<br />
1 clove garlic – crushed<br />
4 x 200g halibut steaks – filleted,<br />
skinned and boned<br />
1 punnet roma vine tomatoes<br />
– halved<br />
100g fresh garden peas<br />
– podded and blanched briefly<br />
1 punnet baby herb shoots<br />
1 punnet roma tomatoes<br />
Mixed salad leaves<br />
10 new potatoes<br />
– blanched and griddled<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Mix together the olive oil and garlic and drizzle over the<br />
halibut steaks<br />
2. Heat a non-stick frying pan and seal the halibut on both<br />
sides until lightly coloured<br />
3. Remove from the pan and place in a hot oven 180°c and<br />
cook for 5 minutes or until cooked through<br />
4. Whilst cooking start to arrange the roma tomatoes, peas,<br />
shoots, potatoes and leaves on plates<br />
5. Remove the fish from the oven, finely grate some<br />
parmesan over the top, mix the vinegar, oil and sugar<br />
together, season, drizzle over the salad and finally top<br />
with the halibut.<br />

HEYWOOD IN BLOOM<br />
Monthly Update<br />
On Tuesday 16th July the Royal Horticultural Society judges<br />
came to <strong>Heywood</strong>.<br />
The two judges John Shepley and John Bilsborough joined the chair and vice chair<br />
of <strong>Heywood</strong> in Bloom Ellen Yates and John Carney to go on a tour which included<br />
the Phoenix Brewery, Railway Station, Fire Station and many Its Your Neighbourhood<br />
entries. It was a beautiful sunny day which made the day very enjoyable and a lovely<br />
lunch was laid on by Alison the owner of Queens Park café.<br />
The children of St Lukes school where very excited to show us all the planting and<br />
the Bee themed area they had prepared in the school grounds. The area was adorned<br />
with 100 bees knitted by the mother of one of the teaching assistants and looked<br />
very effective.<br />
The judges marked each entry and these results will be revealed at the awards in<br />
Southport at the end of October. On Thursday 18th July we will be welcoming two<br />
further judges for the visits to our parks, town centre, industrial park and crown oil<br />
ltd. This will finish with the marking for the town as a whole, which has brought us<br />
a Gold Award for the past three years running.<br />
Last year saw <strong>Heywood</strong> win twenty two awards in total eight of which were Gold.<br />

<strong>Heywood</strong> In Bloom Gardening Tips<br />
1. Long grass can now be cut without damaging bulbs. Cut it as short as you can and<br />
gather every blade for the compost heap. If you wish to add wildflowers, scarify<br />
(break up) the soil after mowing and sprinkle a wildflower mixed seed. Tread it in<br />
and flowers will start to appear next year.<br />
2. To encourage a second show of roses, remove all dead blooms. Pick off leaves<br />
affected by black spot disease and gently pick out aphid colonies on young buds.<br />
If you see small, grey insects with black and yellow markings, leave them they are<br />
ladybird larvae which feed on aphids.<br />
3. As the days get shorter sweet peas try to turn the flowers into seed. To slow this<br />
down and keep the flowers until September, pick every bud on each plant every<br />
8-10 days. Use scissors to cut the stems as long as possible and remove any seed<br />
heads promptly.<br />
4. This is the time to take soft cuttings, suitable plants include pinks, carnations,<br />
penstemons, rock roses, lavenders and other herbs. Gather cuttings on a cool calm<br />
morning or in early evening. Select healthy young shoots, have bags to hand to<br />
keep them fresh. Fill several small pots with compost, take the cuttings removing<br />
any lower leaves cut across the lowest leaf joint. Insert several cuttings into each<br />
pot and water thoroughly. Place the pots in a greenhouse propagator, a cold frame<br />
or on a windowsill. Rooting time depends on plant type and where placed.<br />

A Rochdale ‘brave soul’ enjoyed an unforgettable day out… thanks<br />

to a special horse-racing themed event hosted at the famed Nutters restaurant.<br />

Ladies Day Luncheon at celebrity chef Andrew Nutter’s award-winning restaurant,<br />
offering up their own table on social media for followers to nominate a worthy cause.<br />
