Brilliant books to keep you busy this month
Painful. Honest. Utterly heartbreaking.
You’ll read every page of Get Me to
21– all 436 of them – with your heart
in your mouth. It’s Gabi Lowe’s
agonising, courageous story about
trying to save her daughter’s life.
Jenna – who became the face of
organ donors in South Africa with her
#GetMeTo21 campaign – was young,
bright, articulate ... and had a rare,
degenerative lung disease. Pulmonary
arterial hypertension finally took her life
in June 2015 ... four months before her
21st birthday. An extraordinary tribute
to an extraordinary young girl, written
by a brave mother who hopes the
book will help others facing loss, pain,
challenges and adversity. MFBooks/
Jacana, R265
Jessica Pan was an unhappy introvert.
She wasn’t, she’s quick to point out,
unhappy because she was an introvert.
But she needed to do something about
the depression she was sinking into.
When she found herself in a sauna
– weeping, clutching a copy of Men’s
Health, ‘dressed as an assassin, reading a
guide to 8-minute abs’ and screaming
profanities at a spa employee, all to
win a free gym contract, she knew
something had to change. What would
it be like if, for one year, she lived as an
extrovert? Knowingly, willingly putting
herself in perilous social situations ....
those she’d usually avoid at all costs.
Sorry I’m Late - I Didn’t Want to Come
is Jess’s story of this painful, hilarious
year. Penguin, R320
Also well worth reading ...
Having two autistic children is every parent’s nightmare. Saving My Sons is Ilana
Gerschlowitz’s story, told with Marion Scher, of her determination to find a way
to help her sons. Her tenacity bore fruit in the form of answers from international
experts and she has gone on to greatly improve the lives of her own two boys
as well as to help countless children facing learning challenges. Essentially, she
discovered that autism is a treatable illness and that early intervention is vital.
BookStorm, R320
Steph is a federal agent ... one who
knows her job. She knows how to
interview people, and how to tell when
they’re lying. So when she finds a gun
in Zachary, her teenage son’s room, and
finds out he’s been in contact with a
terrorist group via email, she questions
him, and is convinced he’s telling the
truth that he has no idea about what’s
going on. But who, then, is setting up
her son? And why? Or is she just being
a typical mum and not seeing the truth
about her son? Keep You Close will
keep you guessing ... a chilling read by
Karen Cleveland. Penguin, R290
Another thriller for October ...
Megan Miranda’s The Last House
Guest keeps you on the edge of your
seat from the very first page. Alternating
between two summers of 2017 - when
a young woman is found dead on the
beach while her friends are celebrating
at an end-of-summer house party;
– and 2019, when her best friend is
still not convinced the death was an
accident, this is a chilling thriller – with a
wicked twist! Corvus, R313
THE PAINT IN HER
Even as a little girl, Bongi Bengu knew that one day she would work as an artist.
Little did she know, however, that her work would be displayed throughout the
country and that she would be able to add more than just a few awards to her name.
Born in Eshowe, Val de
Grace resident Bongi
Bengu left South Africa
when her family went
into political exile.
She attended school
in Switzerland and Swaziland,
obtained a BA in Fine Arts, Cum
Laude from Mount Vernon College
in Washington D.C. before returning
to South Africa and graduating with
a Master of Fine Arts degree from
Michaelis School of Fine Art, the Fine
Arts department of the University
of Cape Town. It’s a real mouthful,
we know. But Bongi Bengu is as
talented as she is beautiful and we
just had to find out more about this
amazing local artist.
She’s called the capital city home
for the past five years and even as a
child, art has always been a part of
her life. “As a child I was always asked
to illustrate for my father’s work
presentations and my sisters’ school
biology and chemistry diagrams so
I realised back then that art was my
calling,” Bongi explains.
For her, art is a very powerful
platform for creating dialogue
amongst people. “It can also be a
potent healing tool,” she adds.
Her very first solo exhibition was
at the AVA gallery in Cape Town
and was a presentation of the work
she completed as part of her MFA
degree at the Michaelis School of
Fine Art. The theme was examining
the role of African women and
power. Since then she’s exhibited
her both locally and internationally.
Bongi says she gets inspiration
for her work from everyday life
and experiences.
She primarily uses mixed media
in her work and explains that
she loves to combine different
mediums such as charcoal, pastel,
acrylics, oils and found materials
from nature. She’s even worked
with soil and says her style
evolves constantly.
She has lived in various countries
and can speak multiple languages,
and Bongi says the ‘international
component’ has definitely helped
in her work. “Because I have lived
in so many different countries, I
always feel at home wherever I
am and I always try to express a
universal message,” she says.
Her favourite local artist is Louis
Maqhubela and internationally she
follows the work of Kara Walker.
Her dream job? “Being an artist is
my dream job! I waited for years
to do this work. But now I would
also love to extend the experience
to others. I would love to be more
involved with teaching the youth
and grooming our future leaders,”
Bongi says.
And of course we had to ask. What
is the biggest stereotype people
usually have about artists? “I think
the worst stereotype about artists
is that they are ‘weird’. My question
usually is who defines what is
normal and what is weird?”
Bongi says.
Right now, Bongi is working on a
series of etching and litho prints.
Litho printing or lithography is a
method of printing using stones
or metal plates. “The series of
prints are inspired by the powerful
symbol of infinity that can help us
in various ways, but most especially
to create balance and harmony
within our daily lives.
Any advice for aspiring artists
dreaming of making it big in
the industry?
“Make sure you have a mentor that
can always help and guide,” she says.
“Especially since one of the most
difficult things about being an artist
is marketing and making sure one
gets enough exposure.”
“The best part about being a fulltime
artist is when work ceases to
be work because it is so fulfilling
and nourishing to the soul. The art
encompasses my whole life. It is like
breathing,” Bongi says.
Criticism is part of life as an artist,
but Bongi has some advice.
“Everything can work in one’s favour.
Bad criticism can give one great
publicity and also help one grow
enormously as an artist,” she says.
In her free time, Bongi loves to listen
to good music and dance. She also
enjoys Indian cuisine, especially
since it’s tasty and healthy.
If you want to know more or see
Bongi’s work, visit her website
YOUNG, SPUNKY
ADVENTUROUS
One look at Angeliz Venter is enough to tell you that this is no ordinary young lady.
She’s a 23-year-old student, part-time model and business owner. Pretty impressive, hey?
&
he Waverley beauty started
her business, KiCoco,
formerly known as Little
Gentleman, in 2016 while
studying B. Consumer Science:
Clothing Retail Management
at the University of Pretoria.
She made baby clothes as extra
production hours for her degree
before realising quickly enough that
there is a big market for baby and
toddler boys clothing.
In August of this year, she decided
to expand the business to boys, girls,
and unisex kids clothing up to the
ages of 10. She also added locally
produced baby vellies to the online
store. The shift in products prodded
Angeliz to change the name and says
it was inspired by kids around the
world and her love of coconuts and
islands. “All our designs are based on
inspiration gained from nature. We
strive to be sustainable and are a 100
percent no waste brand. We use all of
our off-cut fabrics in new designs and
repurposing them for pillow covers
and cushion stuffing,” she explains.
“I think starting a business so young
is the ultimate thrill and definitely
a good thing. Being so young I
don’t have the responsibility of
dependants and can take risks with
the business without worrying that it
will have an effect on anyone besides
myself,” Angeliz says.
Running a business, completing her
studies and working as a part-time
model is no easy task at best. “It gets
very difficult and tiring at times,
but luckily I am a very driven and
motivated person. I like to challenge
myself constantly and I think that
is what kept me going through
the last three years of running my
own business. I think the different
disciplines also helps keep my mind
fresh and prevents me from getting
overwhelmed too quickly,” she says.
Although she initially did all the
sewing herself, Angeliz these days
has a few students and a small scale
CMT (cut, make and trim factory) that
helps with production.
She designs everything herself but
says she gets her inspiration from the
people around her, especially moms.
The former Waterkloof High school
student was born and raised in the
capital and says she always knew she
wanted to one day work in fashion
and hopefully one day own her own
business. She just never expected it
to be this soon.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned since
starting my business is to rather do
things the long and right way instead
of the quick and easy way, because
you will always have to fix the easy
way later on.
But, what is it about clothing,
especially kids clothing, that
makes Angeliz so passionate about
the industry?
“The clothing industry is very
tough and competitive and seeing
little kids especially babies in your
designs, makes it so much easier.
They just add an extra element of
achievement to your designs,”
she says.
While still in school, Angeliz decided
to get into modelling, at first to boost
her self-confidence but it evolved
from there.
You might not expect this, but
Angeliz loves spending time in
nature, whether it is skydiving,
hiking, mountain biking or simply
reading a book.
She loves sushi and her favourite
coffee shop to grab coffee with the
girls is Aroma Gelato in Lynnwood
Road. “Nothing beats a cup of
coffee with a waffle and ice cream,”
she laughs.
When work gets the better of
her and it’s time to take a break, she
spends a night in at home, watches
series or for a proper pamper
session heads to Ingaadi spa for a
relaxing massage.
KiCoco will launch on 2 November 2019 in the Oh My Baby store in Menlyn Mall
FASTING – SAY WHAT?!
The latest craze in the health community is Intermittent Fasting and of course we had to
find out more. Just in case you would like to try it out.
K
elly
Stegen is a pro when
it comes to living a
healthy lifestyle. She’s the
creator of Kelfit Lifestyle
(now kellystegen.com), an
Intermittent Fasting specialist as well
as a pregnancy and breastfeeding
expert. The mom of two is also an
ISSA Qualified Sports and Fitness
Specialist and Nutritionist specialising
in nutrition and has coached clients
to be the best version of themselves
all over the world. “I have battled with
my weight my whole life. After trying
every diet under the sun, battling
with anorexia and having a baby
where I picked up 30kg, I decided
enough is enough. In 2009 I watched
my first fitness show and decided
that I also wanted to be on stage. I
then started my fitness journey. It
took me 12 weeks to transform my
body and I have never looked back,”
Kelly says.
WHY INTERMITTENT
FASTING?
“I am not a huge believer in fad diets
but two years ago I was introduced
to Intermittent Fasting and as a
coach I was very open-minded to
try this new way of life /pattern of
eating. It took me two years to get
it right and find the magic with
IF - and I lost 8kg and maintained
my goal weight ever since. I truly
believe this is a life-changing way of
life and can help women with eating
disorders and obsessive eating
patterns, it is relaxed and just so
easy to follow if done the right way.
I did a lot of studying on this topic
and developed my own programme
of IF which I started introducing to
my clients in February this year. My
clients have had enormous success
on the programme and I am very
happy with how the ladies’ and men’s
bodies responded to it,” Kelly added.
20 Get It Pretoria October 2019
WHAT IS INTERMITTENT
FASTING?
Intermittent Fasting (sometimes
referred to as IF) is an eating schedule
which alternates between fasting
and feeding. A time window where
eating is allowed is set whereafter
you are only allowed to consume
food during that period. The rest of
the time is spent fasting – meaning
NO food is allowed. But, as with
everything in life there are a few
rules key to make this a healthy and
productive health choice for you.
“For example, you may eat only
between the hours of 10am and
6pm, or 12pm and 8pm …whatever
suits you - the levels range between
beginner all the way to expert. IF is
not a diet in the conventional sense,
but rather, a pattern of eating - a
lifestyle,” Kelly explains.
WHAT ARE THE
BENEFITS?
“Intermittent Fasting has potential
benefits for your metabolism, disease
prevention, cellular repair and
psychological well-being. Studies
have also shown it can help with
depression, anxiety, stubborn fat,
hormone issues and more,” Kelly says.
It’s also the perfect choice for
someone who does not like to eat
breakfast and feel they are disciplined
enough to give IF a go. “It is so much
easier than the conventional 5 meals
a day diet, it is really nice food and
IF promises a lot of benefits, not just
weight loss. It is also good for your
mood, skin, sleeping patterns and
hormones, and there are so many
benefits to doing IF,” Kelly adds.
It is based on the 16:8 hour principles
for beginner level and 18:6 hour for
intermediate level.
“It really helps people who also have
high cortisol levels and stubborn fat
deposits that they cannot get rid of
(by lowering cortisol and balancing
hormones). Because your body learns
to utilise fats for energy and not
carbohydrates it helps to control your
hunger pangs as well,” Kelly adds.
The potential benefits of IF
include:
• Improved mental clarity and
concentration.
• Weight and body fat loss.
• Lowered blood insulin and
sugar levels.
• Reversal of type 2 diabetes.
• Increased energy.
• Improved fat burning.
• Increased growth hormone.
• Lowered blood cholesterol.
Let us help you put all this into a
practical and productive plan. Many
people are re-discovering this dietary
intervention. It can carry huge
benefits if it is done right: weight loss,
increased energy, reversal of type 2
diabetes and many other things.
“At Intermittent Fasting Online
I will guide you on what can be
drunk during your fast, what to
eat in your eating window and
more. If this is something that
you feel you would be disciplined
enough to do… getting started
is quick and easy and we have a
few plans to suit every lifestyle and
budget. IF has really changed the
composition of so many of our
clients bodies - they are loving the
IF lifestyle!” Kelly says.
MORE ABOUT IF AS
EXPLAINED BY KELLY:
What type of foods can one eat
when doing IF?
The plan is based on low carb/
higher fat… carbs are kept low but
not cut out completely. We also work
in one refeed day per week to keep
metabolism firing.

Can you still drink fluids when
fasting?
Yes, you may drink all teas, coffees
as long as they are black or made
with a dash of fat-free or almond
milk, no more than 1/2 cup of milk in
the fasting period, and to be drunk
neat or with 1-2 sweetener or xylitol.
Water is obviously allowed freely
during your fasting period.
Is the diet very strict on
Intermittent Fasting?
No - the diet gives you many options
and you can still eat out while doing
IF. It is a complete way of life and
very do-able. We refer to it as a
“pattern of eating.”
“Some people believe in eating
whatever you want in your eating
window - this is not the case. You
need to eat enough protein, veggies,
good fats and a select number
of carbohydrates - that’s where
someone like me comes in - a coach
can teach you what you need to
know. A lot of people try and do Keto
- doing Keto is super hard and trying
to keep your body in ketosis even
harder. My plan is so easy to follow
and the food is delicious,”
Kelly explains.
What if you like eating breakfast?
Then you just change the fasting
window, you eat breakfast and eat
for 6 to 8 hours and then continue
your fast after that so you would skip
dinner. You would need to decide if
breakfast or dinner is more important
to you and base your feeding
window around that.
Do you have to count calories on
Intermittent Fasting?
No, we don’t count calories at all…
it is a way of life and you listen to
what your body needs. We fuel
our bodies correctly with the right
amount of nutrients.
Doesn’t Intermittent Fasting slow
down your metabolism?
Surprisingly, research suggests that
the effect of Intermittent Fasting has
the same or less negative effects on
metabolism compared to traditional
dieting. The reason why many
think Intermittent Fasting improves
metabolism is due to less loss of lean
body mass and greater fat burning.
How much weight can you lose
while IF?
It is entirely dependent on your body
and how strict you are. Fasting for
16 to 20 hours a day can help you
safely lose 1-2kg of fat every week.
While losing this much weight every
week is great, it’s how it happens
that’s really cool. Losing weight with
Intermittent Fasting means that you
will never have to count calories or
plan and prepare several meals a day.
This is dependent on how your body
responds and how much weight you
have to lose as well.
Seeded pita chips with baked
Camembert and honey-roasted grapes
Every cook should have a few no-fail recipes they can turn to for
quick snacks to feed unexpected guests. These seeded pita chips
with baked Camembert and honey-roasted grapes is one of them!
Prep is only five minutes and your oven does the rest in under 15.
Spend more time with friends, less time in the kitchen – just the
way summer entertaining should be.
You’ll need:
1 Camembert; 1 clove garlic (peeled and sliced into slivers); 1 sprig
thyme; 1 large bunch red grapes; 2 tbsp honey; one packet of pita
breads
To make:
Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the Camembert in a round
ovenproof bowl that just fits the cheese. Make tiny cuts in the
cheese and stuff it with garlic slivers and thyme leaves. Cut the
pita breads into triangles, paint very lightly with olive oil and
dust with Tastebud Seeded spice blend. Place on a baking tray
lined with baking paper. Place grapes on another lined baking
tray. Melt the honey by microwaving it for 20 seconds and pour
over the grapes. Place the bowl with Camembert on the tray
with the grapes. Place both trays in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes
until the pita is toasted, the grapes roasted and the Camembert
oozing. (The grapes and Camembert will take the same amount
of time, but keep an eye on the pita chips as they may need to be
removed a few minutes earlier.) Serve right away.
Savoury potato pizza with rocket and pecorino
Potato pizza? You’ve got to be kidding! Actually we’re not. It’s a real thing and
Romans have been savouring it for ages. Of course they call it pizza con le
patate, which admittedly sounds a lot more impressive than potato pizza.
There is no tomato base and zero cheese, so it’s kinder to the waistline and
your vegan friends can come to dinner.
You’ll need:
For the pizza dough ... 400g bread flour; 100g semolina; 1 packet (10g) instant
yeast; ¼ tsp salt; 260ml lukewarm water; 40ml milk; 1 tsp honey
For the topping ... 1kg baby potatoes (sliced as thinly as possible using a
mandolin); 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary; garlic-flavoured olive oil; Cape Herb &
Spice Savoury spice
To make:
Mix the flour, semolina, yeast and salt. Gradually add the water and mix. Add
the milk and honey to the last bit of water and add to the dough. Knead for 12
minutes. Put the dough, brushed with olive oil, in a large clean bowl, cover with
cling film and a tea towel and put in a nice warm spot for an hour to an hour
and a half until the dough has doubled in size.
Knock it back to remove all the air, cut into 4 equal pieces and shape into balls.
While the bread proves, parboil the potatoes in plenty of salted water until just
tender – it takes mere minutes. Drain, dry and toss with a generous glug of
olive oil so everything is well coated.
To assemble the potato pizza, roll out dough on a sheet of non-stick baking
paper. Brush with garlic-flavoured oil.
Pack with potatoes, dust with Tastebud Savoury spice and sprinkle generously
with rosemary leaves. Grind over black pepper and give it a final tiny splash of
olive oil. Place the pizza with the baking paper (this makes it so much easier to
handle!) on a preheated non-stick baking tray or a hot pizza stone and bake at
200°C for 10 to 15 minutes until done.
Drizzle a bit of lemon juice and olive oil over the rocket, give it a grinding of
black pepper and pile onto the potato pizza along with a few shavings of
Parmesan or pecorino (not for the vegans!) Tuck in right away while it’s warm.
This recipe makes 4 medium potato pizzas.
Zesty prawn and
zucchini pasta
Eating light and bright is always a
good idea, but in summer we really
crave it. It doesn’t come much faster
or healthier than this prawn and
zucchini pasta – which is on the table
in under 15 minutes. The Tastebud
Zesty spice has intense citrus notes
– the perfect foil for the richness of
prawns and the slight earthiness
of zucchini. Add parsley and basil
for extra freshness and tuck in
knowing it’s not just tasty, but good
for you too.
You’ll need:
16-20 prawns (deveined and peeled);
a fat clove garlic (minced); extra
virgin olive oil; 800g zucchini ribbons;
Cape Herb & Spice Tastebud Zesty
spice, bunch of flatleaf parsley (leaves
only, roughly chopped); tiny basil
leaves for garnish
To make:
Heat a generous glug of olive oil in
a large non-stick frying pan. Add the
garlic and prawns and stir-fry until
cooked through. Remove the prawns.
Add another glug of olive oil to the
pan if necessary. Fry the zucchini
ribbons over high heat until just
done – it takes mere seconds, you
want it al dente not mushy. Dust the
zucchini with Tastebud Zesty spice,
add parsley and the prawns. Toss to
ensure everything is coated with
the spice.
Garnish with teeny basil leaves and
serve right away.
Serves four as a light meal.
ADVERTORIAL
ENTERTAINING
AT ITS BEST
Entertaining should most definitely not be a chore and with the help of Mareliz Pretorius Vereecke
and her team at Armar Catering and Event planning, a wedding is as easy as pie.
When it comes to seriously good food,
there is a lot to be learned from Mareliz
Pretorius Vereecke. She is a whiz in the
kitchen, can whip up food for hundreds
of people whithout batting an eye
and has the perfect venue to help
make your dream wedding even more
special. Yes, she can basically do it all.
“I have always been interested in the
hospitality industry and worked around
the country as a food and beverage
manager for an international hotel
group. After I got married I decided to
change my career and went full-time
into catering,” Mareliz explains.
Armar catering was born and since the
inception the team expanded and the
company is now offering a full catering,
hospitality and event planning service.
Pretty impressive, even if we have to
say so ourselves.
The cullinary magic takes place at
Armar’s state-of-the-art kitchens in
Pretoria North but Mareliz also aquired
a portion of a 210 hectare conservancy
property a few years ago within the
greater Dinokeng Big 5 Reserve where
Armar House opened its doors.
The house is the perfect escape from
the hustle and bustle of city life and to
experience the African Bushveld.
It’s easily accessbile from Pretoria
and Johannesburg and the property
even allows a unique game viewing
experience on foot or by 4x4. The
walking trails guarantee that you’ll
see game from close-by, which makes
for the most amazing photos.
Sightings will most likely include
giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, impala,
kudu and blesbuck.
As it shares a 2km border fence with
the Dinokeng Big 5 Reserve quite a few

sightings of rhino have been reported
by guests at the house.
Just imagine, with jackal calls at
night the only sound disturbing the
peace, you’ll definitely relax and get
to unwind.
The guest farm has 3 neat en-suite
rooms, each sleeping two; a family
room sleeping 4 to 6 and a 10-sleeper
“dormitory” with its own bathroom and
separate toilet. The latter is mainly for
kids or those young at heart. It also has
its own TV and DVD station.
The house also boasts an open-plan
dining room/lounge and a huge
‘Out of Africa Stoep’ overlooking the
watering hole. It’s self-catering with
a fully equipped kitchen, a sparkling
plunge pool, braai lapa and boma.
“Our latest acquisition is our rustic
Bushveld feel wedding venue that can
host up to 270 people. Our wedding
couples have some of the most
beautiful wedding photographs with
the wild animals at the watering hole
visiting and being inquisitive,”
Mareliz says.
The chapel can seat 80 people and
for close family that needs to stay
over for a few days, the venue also
has two self-catering houses offering
accommodation facilities for 36
people. There is also a braai area for
the guys. “The fact that this can remain
as a rustic bushveld setting or can be
turned into an upmarket venue with
draping, candelabra, loads of quality
crockery and cutlery and fresh flowers
makes this an easy choice for any bride.
The event planning can be part of the
package and it’s only a 45 minute drive
from Pretoria.”
The venue is fully licenced to cater for
all needs. So if you’re on the hunt for
the perfect wedding venue and want
to keep it small and intimate, this is
the venue for you. It can be viewed on
appointment.
And of course, with Armar specialising
in good food, the food selection can
range from traditional, to fusion and
even sushi - there is a fully trained
Sushi chef on-site.
Armar is well known for bespoke
themed menus including Italian,
Mexican, American to name a few and
a firm favourite for corporate functions.
Canapés will always remain popular as
it is easy to serve and easy to eat.
This way the guests can feast with
their mouths and eyes and still mingle
or network.
“It is always good to stay in touch with
trends and food fads, as we will offer it
to new and old clients to entice them.
That is why we have been given rave
reviews over the years.”
“Unfortunately there are many flyby-night
catering companies in this
industry and all potential clients
should ask for references before
signing on the dotted line. We have
been fortunate that we have catered
for the very best, including the King of
the Royal Bafokeng, and the late Mrs
Adelaide Tambo. We also do regular
corporate functions for cellphone
service providers and private bankers.”
She has worked on some amazing
events. Her favourite event was a
midnight Oscar award celebration
ceremony at Ster-Kinekor, timed to
tie in with the live Oscars taking place
in Los Angeles.
When Mareliz is not busy running
around catering for events, or hosting
guests at Armar House she loves to
relax and unwind with a glass of chilled
white wine and a bowl of quality pasta,
served with olive oil and parmesan
cheese. Yummy!
“With the rare luxury of having
time off, I love to read recipe books,
more recipe books and maybe
something by Kathy Reichs for a bit
of variety.
For more information, to get a quote or make
a booking call Mareliz on
DEETLEFS WINE ESTATE
A maiden voyage from Europe on
3 October 1752 was the start of a legacy
and set in motion the story of the second
oldest wine estate in South Africa owned
by the same family - Deetlefs Wine Estate.
Since then each of the seven generations
contributed in their own unique way to
the success of the winery today.
Situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof
mountains in the Breedekloof valley,
Rawsonville, the farm and vineyards
bear the indelible mark of the different
generations. But, just as the winery and
land bare a mark, the family has also
been shaped by the land.
“A golden thread runs through our
history, reflecting a boldly individual
approach, a strong set of values and
a long-term focus. Since 1994, we
put more focus on the international
markets and today more than 80%
of our wines are exported. Currently
it is my responsibility to create more
opportunities for generations to come
and to tell the story,” says owner and
winemaker Kobus Deetlefs.
Deetlefs Wine Estate has been exporting
their wine since 1999 and the estate
rakes in award after award for their
superb wine and winery. Five of their
wines scored top marks in the recent Tim
Atkin 2019 report (out of
2 115 wines tasted), three wines
achieved top awards at the China Wine
and Spirits Awards 2019. The Stonecross
Range from Deetlefs Wine Estate has
recently been awarded six gold medals
at the Gold Wine Awards 2019 and at
the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine
Show the Deetlefs Reserve Chenin Blanc
2018 received an amazing 88% and the
Deetlefs Familie 80%. To name only a few.
Their secret? Good agricultural practices
are a combined form of art, science, skill
and passion. “It’s something we take
very seriously here at Deetlefs Wine
Estate. These practices are the important
foundation assisting our winemaker in
producing wines of consistently high
quality,“ Kobus adds.
“One of the greatest challenges and
achievements was turning the familyowned
wine estate into a dynamic wine
group, based on the culture and values
of the Deetlefs family. Something that
was succesfully done.”
Cheers to rhinos & ellies
You know we Get It girls love a safari ... and are passionate about our wildlife. And
we’re not averse to a glass of wine either. So when we combine the two ... bliss.
This month we’re raising our glasses to wineries that embrace conservation. Cheers!
Balance, the quirky range of generous, everyday wines, has
been relaunched after a stylish makeover ... and besides
looking (and tasting) good, also supports desert elephant
conservation. With Hank the elephant as the wine’s mascot,
Balance has adopted the Elephant Human Relations Aid
(EHRA) as a corporate social investment initiative. For every
bottle sold, a contribution is made to fund the EHRA PEACE
project, an educational programme promoting the peaceful
co-habitation of local communities with desert elephants in
Southern Africa. Taking the project even further, the wine’s
packaging uses digital technology linked to an exciting
online game to support this initiative ... play and you can
win Balance Bucks to buy more wine, and a donation is
made on your behalf. There are two ranges ... the affordable
Classic easy-drinking range and the Balance Winemaker’s
Selection range ... all really lovely wines for a summer
celebration. Available from your local bottle store or online
for between R47 and R67. Details: Play the game and buy the
wine on balance.wine
We rather love the trend of
winemakers supporting nature
conservation ... and this month
we’re drinking Van Loveren Family
Vineyards’ latest vintage Rhino
Run wines. It’s a superb range of
great quality wines, celebrating the
magnificent rhino and the efforts
being made to save it. There are
five great wines in the range … the
Rhino Run Chardonnay 2017 (slightly
wooded, medium-bodied, created
in honour of the white rhino, and
ideal with creamy pasta dishes,
grilled sole, crayfish, or chicken);
Rhino Run Chenin Blanc 2018
(the perfect partner to herbed
mussels, grilled chicken or
pork); The Rhino Run Ian Player
2016 (a blend of Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot …
all ripe berry, cassis and
redcurrant); The Rhino
Run Cabernet Sauvignon
2017 (enjoy with rich
meat dishes, pork or
venison) and The Rhino
Run Pinotage 2017 (perfect
with red meat, rich stews,
curries and smoked foods).
Prices from around R60 to
around R71.
For a real treat, look for
the sixth wine ... a limited
release collector’s item, The
Last One Shiraz 2013. Only
1 215 bottles were released
... they sell for R1 215 each
and each is hand-bottled,
waxed and labelled,
featuring the signature
of cellar master Bussell
Retief on the label, and
beautifully presented in a
rhino-inspired box. Details:
