COSTAS BATTERED BY
SEPTEMBER STORMS
BUILDINGS destroyed, roads by Simon Russell
took the decision to close
closed, severe flooding,
schools while the storms were
cars washed away, trees ings while the roof of the fish raging, heeding their own advice
being blown over and tens
of thousands of kids told to
stay away from school were
among the issues as the
red and orange storm alerts
from the Met Office proved
to be devastatingly accurate
this week.
There was plenty of rain, but
the wind caused much of the
damage with an entire wall of
the Municipal Sports Centre
in Denia being knocked down
early on Thursday morning as
what was described as a tornado
passed through the Marina
Alta town.
Trucks were blown over,
trees blocked roads and windows
were blown out of build-
market, now a museum, was
badly damaged.
The local police in the town
were called out to over 50 incidents
at the height of the
storm, fallen trees being the
main reason but also snapped
electricity cables, trapped vehicle
and damaged buildings
among others.
Javea experienced an incredible
100 litres of rainfall
in the period from midnight
until 9am on Thursday morning
with winds reaching 108
kmph, among the highest ever
recorded there while the Marina
Alta area took much of the
brunt of the damage.
Most towns in the region
to avoid non-essential
journeys.
This signalled a disruptive
start to the new school year
and for parents who found
their children back home
just three days after the long
summer break ended.
While thankfully there are
no reports at this stage of any
fatalities or serious injuries,
the region will once again be
counting the cost of more devastating
weather, just a few
months after the Easter floods.
Many towns and beaches are
still awaiting repairs from the
storms of two winters ago and
will be keeping their fingers
crossed that this winter will
Another unhappy bunch
will be the tens of thousands
of people who have travelled
over to the area on holiday
hoping for some late summer
sun. Ironically the weather
in most of the UK this week
has been unseasonably warm
and sunny.
Turtle eggs hatched
NINE loggerhead
turtle eggs rescued
from a Valencian
beach in the summer
have been successfully
hatched in the
SINGER-SONGWRITER Camilo
Sesto, a massive Spanish star
who had his biggest successes
in the 1970s and 1980s, died
of heart failure at the age of 72
on Sunday.
Sesto's manager, Eduardo
two heart attacks.
100 million records worldwide over
The nest was found
stood little chance of
survival on the busy
province, so they
were carefully collected
and transferred to the
foundation.
The babies started
hatching at the end of
August and were sustaining
themselves on
the yolk of the egg as
they would in the wild.
They were transferred
to a water tank
started swimming
as usually their first
encounter with water
OVER 70 kayak enthusiasts
gathered in Marina El
to collect rubbish, most
of it tricky to reach trash
away from the beach.
The group had actually
been on the Marina Alta
beach for a fishing competition
and then decided to
spend some time doing the
good service afterwards.
They collected 25 kilos in
a dry run for the nationwide
kayak rubbish collection
that takes place this Sunday.
Niko Lenarts, fisheries
director for the Marina
El Portet thanked everyone
involved.
The new ambassador
meets the King
by Simon Russell
KING Felipe last week officially
received Britain’s new ambassador
in the royal courts, a ceremony
deep in tradition including
the ambassadors traditional
19th century state uniform that
only a handful of dignitaries are
permitted to wear.
The new man in the job, Hugh
Elliot, is very familiar with Spain
and its culture, and has a Spanish
wife who he met while he was
teaching in Salamanca University
back in the 1990s.
Both the King and Mr Elliot are
well aware of the looming Brexit
and the fact that the UK is the
biggest single investor in Spain,
not to mention the 300,000 Britons
living here and the 200,000
Spaniards in the UK.
Are you Brexit prepared?
It has certainly been the most talked
about subject in years, and as expats
we have lived through some worrying
times. The lack of clear guidance and
information has been a huge frustration,
but Chorus have ensured we’ve been
on the front line. Every month for the
last 2 years, Chorus have been on the
Brexpats in Spain advisory panel at the
British Consulate Brexit meetings, so
have had first-hand information from
the British Consulate and Ambassador
on how best to prepare.
Both the British and Spanish
governments have given clear advice
on the best way to ensure a smooth
transition for British expats in Spain,
and I wanted to use this article to pass
on as much of that information as
possible.
1. GET LEGAL
Make sure that if your intention is to
live in Spain more than 183 days, you
are resident (you might know this as the
green card or green paper, depending
upon when you took it out). This is the
No.1 piece of advice given by both the
UK and Spanish governments.
2. PAY YOUR TAXES
CORRECTLY
The rules on this are pretty simple, if
you live here, and are resident here
then you should pay your taxes on your
worldwide income in Spain. Many
people put this off simply because they
are not aware of the implications and
may believe they’ll be worse off. If you
have any doubts, get expert advice.
3. STAY CORRECTLY INFORMED
Don’t rely on information from friends
or neighbours. Go straight to the source
of information, my advice would be
to follow the governments website –
www.gov.uk/livinginspain here you
will find up to date information, and
also have the chance to register for
email alerts should anything change.
4. GET A SPANISH DRIVING
LICENCE
If you are a Spanish resident, then you
should have a Spanish driving licence.
Failure to do so could result in fines,
and in the result of a no deal Brexit
could even mean that your UK licence
would be invalid in Spain.
5. ENSURE THAT YOUR
FINANCES ARE IN ORDER
Pensions – most importantly, don’t
fall for scare-mongering! Sadly, many
firms in my industry are using Brexit
as a ruse to convince people to make
inappropriate pension transfers, often
to overseas jurisdictions. It’s incredibly
unlikely, under any scenario, that Brits
will lose access to their pensions. What
is a concern is that if you are living
in Spain, you should always have a
locally regulated adviser and hold
an appropriate pension product. We
also don’t know if pension freedoms,
which were introduced following EU
legislation, may exist in their same
form after Brexit. Now may be the time
to see what potential benefits could
be available from your existing UK
pensions.
Investments - If you are becoming a
legal resident in Spain, you should
also be aware that it is unlikely that
your UK financial adviser will have
the appropriate license to give ongoing
advice to you as a Spanish resident.
Equally as important, they may not
have the appropriate knowledge of
Spanish tax law, and Spanish compliant
products, to be able optimise your
finances and taxation moving forward.
It is so important to ensure you are
holding investment products designed
for Spanish resident, rather than those,
like ISAs, UK platforms etc, that are
designed for UK tax payers. Getting
this wrong can result in you overpaying
Newborn found in bin
AFTER a three year campaign,
Valencia has been
named as the World
Capital of Design for
2022, pipping Bangalore
in India to the post.
The steering committee
of the World Design
Organisation (WDO) have
paid visits to the city and
made the final decision
this Monday.
The designation is an
architectural one (not
fashion) based on the cities
transformation over
the years and awareness
of how design affects ordinary
people when done
well.
2022 will now see a
packed programme of
events throughout the
year which the city council
and WDO will now start
developing.
Recent holders of the
prestigious biannual award
include Seoul, Helsinki,
Tapei and Mexico City.
discover the corpse of a
newborn baby in one, and
immediately contacted the
authorities.
The sad find was made in the
Pla neighbourhood on Monday
and several National Police officers
attended the scene.
The baby still had its umbilical
cord attached and had
probably been dead for a few
hours said a spokesman.
The corpse has been transferred
to the cities Medical
Forensic Institute where an
Beware the
cherry pickers...
Successful investing is not about cherry-picking the latest
high-flying fund (there are plenty of examples where these
turn out to be over-ripe and over-valued).
Instead it is critical to ensure that your adviser matches
your investment portfolio to your personal appetite for risk
and overall financial planning objectives.
Confirm that they are personally qualified to advise on
both the investment and financial planning elements of
their recommendations.
At Blevins Franks, our first steps are to thoroughly assess
your risk tolerance and characteristics using a combination
of psychometric questions and other methodologies, and
to understand your needs in term of income, future capital
requirements and estate planning.
Only then do we start to construct a diversified portfolio
that is suitably aligned to your particular needs. We spread
the underlying investments across a range of asset types,
geographic zones and underlying investment managers so
that you are not over-exposed to any one area.
Mobile racket
A BIG GANG that robbed
at least 32 mobile phone
shops across Spain, including
outlets in Alicante
Province and the
Murcia region, has been
busted by the National
Police, after a two
year investigation.
by Alex Trelinski
Eleven arrests were made
in Spain, in an international
operation in conjunction
with Europol and Romania’s
internal ministry,
with people also detained
in Romania, France, Italy
and Sweden. Twenty-three
towns and cities were hit by
the thieves in Spain, including
Elche, Gandia, Santa
Pola, Murcia, Cartagena,
and Elda.
The value of the phones,
that were always stolen
during the night, amounted
to over 700 thousand
euros, and they would
then be shipped over to
Romania, either with the
gang members, or posted
in parcels.
Police say inquiries are
continuing with further
arrests not being ruled out.
Stabbed after
knocking on
neighbours door
A MAN who went to his
neighbours apartment to
tell him he could see water
leaking from his property
was stabbed several
times with a pair of scissors,
suffering a serious
stomach wound.
The police were alerted
to the assault last Wednesday
morning and found the
27 year old victim who told
by Simon Russell
them that his neighbour has
said “he was going to kill
him”.
They arrested the alleged
perpetrator, a 45 year old
Spanish national with a
lengthy police record.
He has been provisionally
charged with attempted
murder and assault.
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 7
Hidden gang caught
by Alex Trelinski
A GANG of bank robbers
that wore a variety of disguises
and stole all round
Spain, including from offices
in Alicante and Murcia,
have been arrested by the
Guardia Civil in Almeria.
The three men and a
woman have been charged
with 20 counts of robbery
and identity theft, with
authorities not ruling out
further charges.
The crooks operated since
July 2018, and also struck
in Granada, Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya,
Burgos, Pamplona, Valencia,
La Rioja, Zaragoza,
Pontevedra and La Coruña .
The exact locations where
they carried out their robberies
locally have not been
revealed by the Guardia.
They are said to have
amassed over 200 thousand
euros, and worked on the
basis of carrying out distraction
robberies, without using
any violence or weapons, and
with frequency jammers to
block mobile phone reception.
The gang had an array of
wigs, sunglasses, and baseball
caps to hide their identities,
and they would spend
time carrying out surveillance
on a bank they wanted to rob.
They would research what
was the busiest time at their
latest target, and then their
Funerals are no laughing
matter, says bishop
JULIAN Ruiz Martorell,
the bishop of Huesca, has
written a decree about the
celebrations at funerals in
his diocese.
This includes limiting music
played to that within the
Christian canon - so no My
UK’s favourite, apparently).
by Simon Russell
operation would begin, as
one of them, in disguise,
would go in and pretend to
be a customer.
As a teller was distracted,
The bishop also wants to
stop the practice of reading
out farewell letters or thank
you letters, biographical
speeches and various other
modern day practices.
He said “Christian funerals
should clearly reflect the
Easter meaning of the Christian’s
death (where eternal
life follows)” and should not
be seen as a final goodbye or
heartbreaking experience.
However the practice is
not as widespread as in the
UK, where the most common
send-off songs played also
include “Angels” by Robbie
Williams and, bizarrely, the
Match of the Day theme tune.
another disguised gang member
would pop in and grab
any money they could lay
their hands on, as the crooks
then beat a hasty retreat.
Celebrating local food
OLIVA is holding the
town’s XII Mostra Gastronomic
this month, a celebration
of Valencian and
Olivense gastronomy.
From the 16 to 19 September
the town’s schools will be
visiting the indoor market
where the students will be
by Simon Russell
guided around and able to
sample various foods.
Sunday 20 September is
World Paella Day and to
mark this occasion, chefs
will be making a giant paella
from 8pm on Paseig
Lluis Vives. The next day
there is the stuffed pepper
making competition, a typical
local dish. This is from
9.30 to 12.00 at the indoor
market.
Next Sunday (28 September)
is the figatell competition,
from 8.30pm at the
market, these being another
very traditional dish in
the area.
Santander
closures
Galicia burns
FIREFIGHTERS backed by
over a dozen aircraft battled
forest blazes raging in
Spain’s northwestern region
of Galicia at the end
of last week.
The fires cut motorways
and forced the evacuation of
several villages,
Fanned by strong winds
by Alex Trelinski
amid hot and dry weather,
the wildfires destroyed over
500 hectares of forest.
In October 2017, Galicia
suffered from a wave of deadly
wildfires that were fanned
by gusty, shifting winds and
killed at least four people.
SANTANDER Bank has announced
the closure of a
dozen branches in the Valencia
and Murcia regions
in the first phase of of plan
to eventually shutdown
1,150 branches across
the country.
The bank declared the
first deck of 86 closures
last Friday, as it plans to
slash just over 3,700 jobs,
or around 11 per cent of
its workforce.
The measures are part of
by Alex Trelinski
Santander’s wider strategy
to focus on cost savings in
Europe while pursuing higher
profits on offer in Latin
America.
In the spring, Santander
said it was looking a billion
euros of savings in Europe.
Details of which local
branches were closing were
not revealed, but there will be
considerably more locations
to come.
Surprise neighbours
A SEVILLA area home
owner got more than he
bargained for when workers
building an extension
at his house uncovered a
Roman burial chamber in
his garden.
José Avilés from the town
by Alex Trelinski
of Carmona was shocked
when the ancient graveyard
Cutting the cord
structure surfaced whilst
workmen were lowering the
ground level and demolishing
part of a broken wall.
It has been described as
a hole of around a metre
square through which a
stone arch is clearly visible,
giving access to a
second chamber with a
domed roof.
A historical expert found
eight niches with the chamber,
six of which contained
ceramic urns housing the
ashes of the deceased.
Some were made of glass
and protected by a lead outer
coating, and three of them
were engraved with what
may have been the names of
those inside.
Avilés now intends to alter
the plans for his house
extension so as to incorporate
the ancient structure
as a 'feature, and to ask for
grant money from national
and regional authorities.
Mosquito summer
by Simon Russell
RESIDENTS and visitors to
Elche have said that the
mosquitoes this summer
have been the worst in living
memory, both for sheer
numbers and the ferocity
of their bites.
The town centre and the
Hondo, El Altet and Arenales
areas have all been badly
affected and poor fumigation
by the government has been
partly blamed.
However the heavy rains
in August followed by the
return of more warm muggy
weather also formed a perfect
late summer habitat for
the creatures.
Many of them are the more
virulent tiger mosquitoes and
their appearance has prompted
the abandonment of sports
events, near emptying of
beaches and people being
forced to keep their windows
shut despite the heat.
Elche council has said it is
looking into the problem but
conceded that when it was at
its height in August “nothing
ever gets done.”
A MAN from the Catalunya
region has lost his
claim against his parents,
who refused to give
him money.
A Barcelona judge ruled
that “relatives cannot be
expected to maintain the illusions
or expectations” of
someone who is an adult.
The unnamed 24-year-old
was told that he “should accept
responsibility for his
decisions”, after wanting his
parents to pay his food bills
after he decided to return
to college.
The court heard that when
his parents separated, thethen
teenager spent time in
both his parents homes and
on turning 18 he got a grant
to go on a course, but had
by Alex Trelinski
spent the money instead on
a tattoo.
His parents told him off,
and he then moved in with
his grandparents who have
supported him since.
The man´s view was that
since he had returned to
college, his parents and not
his grandparents should
shoulder the cost.
The law in Spain says
that parents are not automatically
absolved of legal
obligation to support their
offspring beyond the age of
18, but are expected to do so
if they are unable to support
themselves during full time
study or while job seeking,
providing they can prove
that they are incapable of
supporting themselves.
Like in the matter of the
24-year-old, individual situations
can end up being
judged on a case-by-case
basis.
Law and order on the agenda
THE centre right Ciudadanos
(Cs) party have tabled
motions in the Congress
of Deputies aimed at tackling
what they see as an
increasing breakdown in
law and order, especially
in some inner cities.
Crime in Barcelona, for
example, has risen by 30%
recently, something that has
been picked up by the press
in countries such as Germany
and the UK where many
visitors to the Catalan capital
come from.
“Multi-recidivism” is one
area that needs addressing
they say, whereby if a thief
by Simon Russell
steals less than €400 it is
classed as a minor offence
and not a crime.
Many career thieves are
aware of this and risk nothing
more than a fine however
many times they re-offend.
The Cs have proposed that
these serial offenders should
be eligible for harsher fines,
including prison sentences,
after committing three or
more such thefts.
They also say that any foreigners
here illegally found
guilty of a crime be deported
back to their home country,
with many currently getting
round this due to the
€400 law.
Their other main proposal
is a crackdown on squatters,
especially in city centres
where it has become rife in
some places.
Apart from the distress
and financial loss to the
home owner, many of these
squats are also used as a
base for crime and drug
dealing with eviction being
a costly and long winded
process say the Cs.
They want an eviction
process introduced which is
“quick and streamlined”.

It’s a dog’s life
Five cyclists hit by “speeding” van
by Simon Russell
POLICE are trying to determine
if a van that hit
five cyclists on a road
near the Valencian town
of Betera was speeding at
the time of the accident.
The incident happened
last Thursday morning on a
bend in the road, and three
of the riders were later hospitalised
with injuries that
are serious but not believed
to be life threatening.
The other two victims suffered
abrasions and bruises
that could be treated at the
scene.
The police say that there
is a long tyre skid-mark on
the road, indicating that the
vehicle may have been travelling
at excessive speed but
the forensics team will be
investigating further.
The van driver co-operated
fully, the authorities said, and
tested negative for alcohol
and drugs.
The cyclists were also tested
and had no traces of any
substances in their blood.
The man who received
the worst injuries was
thrown over the top of the
vehicle after being hit from
behind.
Two ambulances were
required at the scene, one
Basic Life Support and one
SAMU vehicle.
DOG OWNERS in Spain’s
northwestern city of
Zamora will have to pay
a tax from next year, as
the council has got fed
up of paying to clear up
dog mess.
“Dog owners should contribute
to a certain extent
to the expense of it all” said
Diego Bernardo, Zamora’s
tax councillor.
He acknowledged though
that not everyone was happy
by Alex Trelinski
with the new, if modest, levy
of nine euros a year.
“The tax has brought some
criticism”, he added, “but
not all of the reactions have
been negative”.
Zamora council expect to
raise 90 thousand euros per
year from the tax, which
will be used to create more
dog walking areas, paying
for clean-up and distribute
Sun, sea, sand and
culture
FIGURES just released by Simon Russell
show that people are coming
to Denia for more than people went in August then
just its great beaches and the other months but over
gastronomy, with cultural 20,000 a month have been
In July and August 40,000
The newly reopened old people went to the castle,
fish market, now the Museum
of the Sea, had 67,000 in August, when there were
17,000 in July and 23,000
visitors between mid-June a few rainy days. 20,000
(when it opened) and the end people visited the Archaeological
Museum at the top of
of August.
A couple of thousand more the castle.
bags for canine waste. It’s
not clear though how the
authority will create a register
of dog owners as well as
policing that everybody has
paid the charge.
Madrid’s mayor last year
tried to push for compulsory
dog DNA tests in order to be
able to identify and fine dog
owners who leave their best
friends’ poop in the streets.
After a change in mayor,
the plan was dropped.
Posed as UN diplomat to avoid parking fines
POLICE in Valencia have
arrested an Albanian national
who had been posing
as a United Nations special
diplomat, ostensibly to
avoid parking restrictions,
although the authorities
are investigating further
possible crimes.
THE new governing body
in the Town Hall of Villena
(Alicante) are facing
a backlash as they have
sanctioned moves that
appear to open the door
to bullfighting after a five
year ban on the practice.
The previous council, Las
Verdes (Greens) banned
such events in 2014 while
the new PSOE ruling body
court cases brought by probullfighting
him this time was suspicious
and called through for confirmation.
It was confirmed the man,
or his vehicle, had no diplomatic
connections and he
was arrested and the car impounded.
It will be thoroughly
searched as it is thought that
there may be an involvement
in more serious crimes than
impersonation and illegal
parking.
The suspect’s passport was
also found to be a forgery.
Outrage as bullfights are back
they had to “consider all applications
A spokesperson for the
town’s animal rights group
said the council were “running
scared” of the court
proceedings, that there
was little legal merit in the
pending case and that the
final decision on the use
of any public space always
rests with the elected c
died suddenly last month.
A collection was made
for the charity at her funeral,
raising €255.30. The
group would like to send
their sincere condolences
to all Marilyn’s family
closed after eight years, a
difficult decision to take
but it is no longer viable.
Special thanks must go
to Anne Goodwin for her
Benidorm Pride pulls in the crowds
ORGANISERS of last week’s
Benidorm Pride will celebrate
its tenth anniversary in
POLICE in Benidorm have
apprehended a forty-sixyear
old British man suspected
of shooting a discotheque
doorman in the
leg with a firearm, during
the early hours of last
Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred
outside a club, popular with
British holidaymakers and
locals, situated in the busy
‘Guiri Zone’ of the resort’s
Rincon de Loix area, known
locally as the English Square.
Witnesses to the attack
told the Spanish Press that
two drunken men, tried to
gain entry to the venue, but
were refused entry by one of
the establishment’s security
staff, owing to their state
of inebriation.
Despite their protestations,
the doorman continued
to deny them access to
the premises, until the pair
eventually left the venue.
However, a few minutes
later, one of the drunken
men returned in a vehicle,
which he parked directly
outside the discotheque.
On leaving the car, the
suspect pulled a handgun,
before firing three shots in
the direction of the doorman,
who was still working outside
the premises.
One of the gunshots hit
the staff member in the calf,
but although, wounded by
the bullet, the doorman was
able to chase after the man,
who had returned to the vehicle
before speeding away
from the scene.
The victim, a thirty-sixyear
old Romanian national,
located a Local Police patrol
car parked nearby and informed
the officers inside
about the attack.
A general alert to all units
in the area was issued to apprehend
the vehicle used by
the assailant.
The suspect was stopped
as he drove along Avenidea
Amettla del Mar, leaving
the resort.
On searching the vehicle,
the arresting officers, uncovered
a weapon and ammunition,
matching the description
of those used in the attack.
The British suspect was
arrested and is expected to
appear in court later this
week, whilst the victim was
taken to hospital for treatment
to his leg wound.
he heard the police vehicles
sirens.
Other officers were alerted
to create a fence around
the immediate area, whilst
the adjacent premises were
searched for evidence of
breaking and entering.
The investigation uncovered
evidence that two of the
three bars had been entered
under force and the protagonist
had injured themselves
in the process, leaving
a trail of blood inside
the premises.
A man, matching the description
given by the witness,
carrying wounds to his
hands, was quickly detained
by other officers.
The detainee, a Romanian
national, aged twenty years
old, was placed at the disposal
of the Courts of the Guard
of Benidorm, charged with a
crime of robbery with force.
2020 and co-organiser Geoff
Gartland is promising more
changes to make it bigger
than ever.
“Our Pride Festival has
grown every year, with more
and more people wanting to
attend and we already have
some great plans to celebrate
our tenth year,” he said.
The Pride parade was reported on Spanish National TV news bulletins
“But first we’ll take a
rest and reflect on the success
of this year’s event
and work out where we can
make improvements.”

Altea Moors and Christians
LATER this month the
townspeople of Altea will
step back a few centuries
to celebrate the traditional
battles between the Moors
and Christian forces.
The annual Moros y Cristianos
fiesta is the biggest
on Altea’s calendar, beloved
by locals and visitors for its
spectacular parades, firework
displays and parties.
Penyas, or social clubs, are
paid into by fundraising activities
throughout the year,
so that during the week long
fiesta they are able to set
up makeshift bars in empty
buildings, garages and
shops, that serve food and
drink to their members.
These penyas are busy
throughout the fiestas, but
the main activities to watch
out for are the parades which
snake through the streets of
the town.
The real festivities begin
on Friday September 20th,
at midnight, when both the
Christians and Moors march
together along the streets of
the newer part of the town
around the Garganes area.
On Saturday September
20th, the Christians parade
by Andy Mansell
Calle Filarmonica to the
Plaza d’esportes at 20.00h.
On Sunday 22nd at
14.00h a loud pyrotechnic
Mascleta takes place in the
Paseo Mediterraneo car
park, followed at 20:00h by
a Solemn Procession in honour
of Stmo. Cristo del Sagrario
and San Blas along
the usual route.
At 00:30, a huge and spectacular,
Grand Firework display,
will light up the skies
above the old town.
On Monday September
22nd it’s the turn of
the Moors to parade separately
through the streets
of Garganes.
Throughout the festivities
a marquee, erected on the
Cami de l’Algar car park,
will provide food, drink and
entertainment provided
by various singers, bands
and orchestras.
This year sees the 40th
anniversary of the Altea
Moros y Cristianos Fiesta,
which has grown signigificantly
since 1979, into one
of the biggest on the Costa
Blanca.
The fiesta features three spectacular parades
first about the rise of photobooks,
something that allows
people to show their work
without taking out a formal
exhibition.
The second at 1pm is
about the art of black and
white photography, highlighted
by a body of work
cliffs and rocks.
This was in the early afternoon
and thankfully the
sea conditions were fair.
On the 21 September at
midday in the same venue
there is a discussion about
whether the recent trend to
alter photographic images
through applications such as
Photoshop is a good thing.
The 1pm talk is about the
empowerment of ordinary
people on the street when
armed with a camera.
On 22 September there is
a round table session in the
JAVEA’S drinking water
supplier, Amjasa, has installed
a pumping station
powered by 36 solar panels
to carry on honouring
their pledge to increase
the use of renewable
energy.
The electricity generated
will drive the pumps at the
by Simon Russell
La Falzia station, sufficient
to supply water to the Balcon
al Mar, La Cala and Ambolo
urban areas.
Amjasa say that the panels
have been successfully
piloted since May, and although
the summer months
are the sunniest they are
also the time when water
usage is at its highest as the
population triples over July
The firm has also upgraded
to a fleet of electric
vehicles and their long term
goal is almost total reliance
on renewable energy.

Eight point
plan revealed
BENISSA Mayor Arturo Poquet
(Partido Popular) and
members of his team unveiled
their eight key projects
in a press conference
this week, with the first
item being approval of the
new budget without which
the whole package will
presumably be in doubt.
by Simon Russell
The General Structure Plan
also needs to be approved and
it is hoped to submit this
to the Generalitat by June
next year after the initial
procedures are followed.
Other goals include boosting
tourism, the construction
of a new town hall, a new
football pitch and athletics
track plus the building of a
municipal auditorium.
These ambitious proposals
represent a four year plan
for Benissa, said Mr Poquet,
of political stability compared
to recent years.
Spain reviews
Brexit plans
The Douglas
DC3 at
Sabadell
airport
THE SPANISH cabinet, under
Prime Minister Pedro
Sanchez, held a special
meeting last Thursday to
discuss preparations for
a no-deal Brexit, which
currently still sees the
UK leave the EU without a
deal on October 31st.
Amidst the dramatic political
moves in Britain over
the last fortnight, Sanchez
presided over a gathering
of his ministers to pour over
all of the Brexit contingency
plans that were passed in
the Spanish parliament back
in March.
The session focused on the
rights of the 300 thousand
British nationals living in
Spain, and the 180 thousand
Spaniards residing in the UK.
It emerged that regional
governments like the one
covering Valencia will now
get more involved in Brexit
contingency plans.
Powers over matters such
as healthcare and education
are devolved to the regions,
by Alex Trelinski
and regional officials have
been called to a future meeting
of the Conference for EU-
Related Matters.
The Valencian regional
president, Ximo Puig, has
continually stated that access
to the healthcare system
will be maintained for
all British nationals irrespective
of whether a Brexit
deal is struck or not.
The respected El Pais
newspaper reported that Pedro
Sanchez had got a deal
Madrid
meeting
with ex-UK PM Theresa May
on rights for both Spaniards
and British nationals earlier
in the year, which would last
until the end of 2020. El Pais
also quoted Foreign Minister,
Josep Borrell, as saying that
changes to the contingency
plans could happen soon.
A more vexed issue for last
week’s cabinet session was
the matter of Gibraltar and
what happens at the border
if the UK crashes out of the
EU, especially with 28 thousand
people crossing it daily
to go to work.
Planes rotting away at Spanish airports
THERE are more than
a hundred aircraft that
have been on the ground
at airports across Spain
for more than a decade,
according to a trade
union report issued this
week.
Most of these have been effectively
abandoned, many by
airline that firms have gone
out of business, and are incurring
about 3 million euros
a year in costs.
The union has become involved
as they are concerned
about talks of breaking these
by Simon Russell
up on site, with environmental
damage and increased
health and safety risks for
their members.
Sabadell airport in Barcelona
has easily the most
with 35 abandoned hulks,
followed by Madrid and Valencia
which have 9 and 8.
Some have become tangled
in legal disputes while
others have been seized to
pay debts, such as the Jumbo
747 at Valencia airport
which was impounded after
the Spanish carrier Pronair
went bust a decade ago.
Attempts to auction the
massive purple plane failed
and the 747 is sitting on the
grass at the airport, depreciating
in value and condition
on a daily basis.
Probably the oldest plane is
the Douglas DC3 in Sabadell
airport.
These planes revolutionised
commercial air travel
making it affordable for
many for the first time - but
production of the DC3 ceased
in the mid 1940s.
Retirement Shortfall – Could this be You?
After the introduction of pension
freedoms in 2015, financial
advisers found that in addition to
trying to get clients to save and
accumulate wealth, they now had
to try to make sure clients didn’t
deplete their pension pots so that
they ran out before the client died.
This can be quite a challenge, as
since this change clients have the
freedom to use their retirement
savings however they want.
Admittedly, there are fewer
Lamborghinis on the road than
was expected, but it is crucial
where possible, that financial
advisers step in to help clients
make the right decisions and
ensure the money is not frittered
away.
The most common questions
are:
Should I take my 25% tax-free
cash?
This may sound good but
whether you are eyeing up a
cruise, a new car, or have a
nagging mortgage to pay off, the
ability to take a quarter of your
pension as a “ tax-free lump sum”
can seem like an opportunity too
good to miss. However, before
you are swayed by what the
money could buy you, remember
that if you are a Spanish Tax
resident there is no such thing as
a tax free lump sum, this applies
to UK tax residents only. The
Hacienda in Spain will tax this
sum once they know about it.
How much can I take from my
pension?
If you have a pension that
allows flexible drawdown, you
will have to carefully manage
how much money you take out of
your pot to ensure that it doesn’t
run out.
Before looking at the numbers,
you’ll also need to think about
what you want to do with your
retirement and what your financial
priorities are. For example,
whether you want to really make
the most of your earlier years
while you’re fit and well, or
whether you want to stockpile
your cash for care later in life or
leave inheritance for loved ones.
Research has shown that
people think they can safely
withdraw around 7% a year from
their retirement fund without
fear of running out of money,
although the reality is likely to be
significantly less than 7%. A more
sustainable rate of withdrawal is
usually between 3.5%pa to 5%pa.
It is also important to consider
that your spending needs will
change during your retirement.
The early years of your retirement
are likely to be the most expensive,
but costs can be high in the latter
stages too, especially if long-term
care is needed.
Can I take my whole pension as
a lump sum?
Since the introduction of the
pension freedoms in April 2015,
you can now take all of your
pension as a lump sum, but just
because you can, it doesn’t mean
you should!
Remember any money taken
from your pension is taxable here
in Spain and this could mean that
you find yourself with a very large
and unwelcome tax bill.
If, however, it is only a small
pot and you have other sources
of retirement income, it may not
always be a bad move. The key
is doing it because you have a
specific need or use for the cash,
rather than just putting it in the
bank, where you will get poor
returns and lose all the tax benefits
of keeping it in a pension.
Must I take an income from my
pension?
The simple answer to this
question is ‘No’. If you don’t
need the money, there can
be advantages in leaving it
within a pension, including taxefficient
growth, the ability to
pass the money tax free to your
beneficiaries if you die before age
75 and this money being outside
of your estate for inheritance tax
purposes.
Business & Money
Don’t break the law
as a landlord in spain
IF you only live for part
of the year on the Costa
Blanca in your property,
then an excellent way of
boosting your income is
to rent out your home for
tourists, at Sun Lawyers
they can tell you exactly
how this can be done.
The big point is that it
must be done legally by getting
a Tourist License from
the Valencian government,
and since it can be a complex
bit of business, we can act on
your behalf in applying for
the tourist license.
Crucially, if you are renting
out and do not have a license,
then you are breaking
the law, and inspectors are
checking on websites where
properties are being advertised
and have not registered
with the authorities.
There have been many reports
of this happening, so
don´t gamble by being an illegal
landlord.
It is compulsory for all holiday
lets to be registered, and
that´s why we at Sun Lawyers
can sort everything out
for you, and you are left with
no nasty surprises, and the
possibility of fines and legal
action being taken because
you are illegally letting out
your property.
To keep it brief, the Valencian
regional rules say that
“tourist rentals are properties
of any type that are rented
out regularly in exchange
for money, with immediate
availability, and with the
aim of fulfilling accommodation
needs for tourism, holidays,
or leisure”.
There are different gradings
for the type of property
that you let out, namely Superior,
Premier, and Standard
but the Sun Lawyers team
can cut through all the red
tape and get the right documentation
and permissions
for what you have.
You will also have to pay
tax on the rental income
that you get, but we will sort
that aspect out for you, and
then you can get the money
coming in, and you can sit
back and relax wherever you
are living!
Sun Lawyers will take
you through the stages that
you need to get the Tourist
License:
1. Give you an assessment
of your property and
what you exactly need.
2. Apply to the Town Hall
for the compatibility
certificate
3. After obtaining the
compatibility certificate,
we will apply
to the local government
to get the rental
license.
There is a lot to be done,
which may not seem obvious
at first hand, but again we at
Sun Lawyers will be across
every single aspect.
The landlord personally
needs to:
1. Apply for the property
registration number
which you will use to
advertise your rental.
For example, if you are
renting out your property,
you will have to put up a
sign close to the front door,
with the registration number
on it.
If you take a booking, then
you must get some internet
access codes from the police,
so that you can fill in the details
of the guests that will
be staying.
The laws on Tourist Rentals
also demand a certain
standard of accommodation
for what you are letting out
in terms of the description
and the category like Standard
that me mentioned
earlier.
An added twist as well is
that different standards also
apply if you want to let out a
property in a rural area!
There are clearly many potential
pitfalls if you try and
go through all the different
stages of getting a Tourist
License on your own, which
is where we at Sun Lawyers
come in.
We have years of dealing
with such matters across
the Costa Blanca, and our
friendly English-speaking
lawyers will do everything
necessary to make sure that
you have complete piece
of mind.
Keeping your holiday letting
under the radar is not a
good idea, and don´t listen to
people offering you an easy
fix at your local bar, or just
giving you the wrong details
and bad advice.
Trust us at Sun Lawyers
to act on your behalf, in the
knowledge that everything
will be done to the letter of
the law, which is what we
are in business for.
the right advice and experts
behind you, and touch base
If you have made the decision or are
thinking about making the decision to
go solar, then you may be wondering -
how does sunlight actually gets turned
Don’t let
You may have other questions too,
such as will your solar panels work on
cloudy days, and will your panels work
at night via moonlight, which, after all,
is reflected sunlight? To find out the
answer to these questions and a few
more, please read on.
Charge your
home with the
power of the sun
GARDENERS looking to
protect their fruit and veg
are being warned to remain
vigilant against destructive
garden pests.
From aphids and caterpillars
to snails, the smallest
creatures can still pack
a punch when it comes to
destroying your much-loved
flowers and veg.
Often, it’s best to try and
prevent pest problems before
they occur, but if you are too
late there are still some options
to explore that don’t
involve chemical pesticides.
It can be really frustrating
and disheartening when you
find some of your prized crops
destroyed by common pests.
So here some common
pests to keep an eye out for as
you’re preening and pruning
your plants.
Aphids
These tiny critters have long
antennae and two little tubes
projecting rearward from
their abdomen. They like
to hang out on fruits, vegetables,
flowers and shaded
trees and suck plant sap,
causing foliage to distort and
leaves to drop.
To control these bugs,
wash your plants with a
strong spray of water and
if possible, cover them with
floating row covers. You can
also try applying hot-pepper
or garlic repellent sprays and
for severe problems, apply
horticultural oil, insecticidal
soap, or neem oil.
Caterpillars
Caterpillars are soft, segmented
larvae with six legs
in the front and fleshy ‘false’
legs on rear segments. You’ll
often find them munching
through a variety of fruits,
vegetables and plants. To deter
them apply floating row
covers or alternatively, handpick
them from the plants.
Slugs
Slugs are single-shelled, softbodied
animals that are persistent
and widespread pests.
They can cause damage on a
wide range of plants, munching
holes in leaves, stems,
flowers, tubers and bulbs.
Attract slugs and snails
by leaving out decaying organic
matter – inspect these
after dark.
You could also try using
copper rings around the base
of susceptible plants, and
sprinkle ashes, soot, sharp
sand, crushed nut of eggshells
around your precious
plants to provide a physical
barrier that slugs and snails
don’t like to cross.
Carrot root fly
It’s the larvae of the carrot
fly that are the major
cause of plant damage – as
they move through the soil
feeding on different roots,
they can cause widespread
damage to crops. Signs to
check for are leaf discolouration,
and holes or tunnels in
the carrot.
You should check for damage
or infestation regularly
and choose growing sites
that are fairly open and exposed.
It’s also a good idea
to companion plant with a
strong-smelling vegetable to
mask the carrot smell, such
as onions or garlic.
Thin your seedlings in the
evening when adult flies are
less active and then destroy all
thinned plants. Remember to
firm the soil around the plants
after thinning as this deters
the flies from laying eggs.
Caterpillar
Birds
Birds such as pigeons can
cause major problems on edible
crops, removing leaves
and buds. This can happen
quickly with no visible culprit
as pigeons often feed in flocks
and target gardens early in
the morning when they’re
less likely to be disturbed.
The most effective way to
deal with pigeons is to prevent
them from reaching the
crops in the first place. As
such, covering your plants
with netting or fleece is a
good idea but make sure you
stake or weight down the
edges. You could also make
items to scare the birds –
hang old CDs along wires to
flash sunlight and scare the
birds, or use aluminium cans
and similar items.
TO a beginner, gardening
might feel like some kind
of rocket science.
Whether you have acres
of land at your disposal or
just a few square metres to
work with, it can be a daunting
task to tackle largely due
to the commitment and time
you have to invest.
These step-by-step tips will
cover the basics and have you
nursing a variety of plants,
flowers and vegetables in
no time.
A spokesman for BillyOh.
tips, says: “Not only does
results, it also gets you
Getting the garden
of your dreams
calories too. Simply follow
our step-by-step guide and
you’ll be nursing the garden
of your dreams in no time!”
Plan ahead
Before you even consider
heading out to buy new
plants and equipment, first
have a think about the bigger
picture and how you’d
Charge your
home with the
Water, water,
power of the sun
eventually like your garden
to look. There are some great
gardening apps available
that will help you plan your
dream garden with ease.
When you have a strong
idea and you have the bulbs,
plants and seeds to hand,
place them all on to the soil
before planting them as
you’ll be able to move them
around until you’re happy
with the arrangement. This
is much easier than having
to dig up and replant
them afterwards!
Pick easy-togrow
plants
Although azaleas and orchids
look and smell amazing,
they’re notoriously difficult
to grow, so are no good
for a gardening novice.
Instead, opt for plants and
flowers that have a reputation
for being easy to grow
and care for.
Look for plants that come
in a variety of colours and
shapes, that are reliable, low
maintenance and will grow
quickly so you’ll be able to
reap the rewards sooner!
Soak the roots
By thoroughly soaking the
roots of a new plant before
putting it in the soil, you’ll
reduce the risk of getting dry
root balls.
Also make sure that the
hole is bigger than the root
ball before you plant it, as
a plant’s roots need to be
able to spread to get the best
chance of tapping into moisture
and absorbing the soil’s
natural nutrients.
Be gentle
Instead of yanking plants
from their pots by their
stems, gently squeeze the
sides of the pot and turn it
upside-down, using your other
hand to catch it as it slides
out. Otherwise, you’re likely
to break or bruise them.
Give plants
space
Crowded plants are much
more susceptible to disease
and young plants often will
not survive if placed too
close together.
If they do manage to pull
through, they’ll need more
frequent watering and fertiliser
too, so make sure you
read each plant care label
carefully to find out how
much room they need.
Label, label,
label
As a gardening rookie, it can
be easy to forget exactly what
you’ve planted and where as
you might not be able to identify
plants and flowers easily
just from looking at them.
To avoid any confusion,
take some time to write a
plant label and pop it in the
ground next to the seeds,
bulbs or plants you’ve planted.
Most plants you buy will
come with a care label anyway
but they can get quickly
ruined being outdoors, so try
copying out the information
on to small strips of wood or
lollipop sticks that you can
stick in the ground instead.
water
Make sure you give young
plants plenty of water, but
avoid getting the plant’s
leaves wet! Wet leave can
quickly lead to mould, rot
and decay – which equate
to one sick plant! Be on the
lookout for yellow leave as
that means too much water!
Trim and prune
Trimming and pruning your
plants allows for increased air
circulation and fewer leaves
for you to spill water on.
It also keeps your plants
and flower looking neat and
pretty, instead of unkempt
and bedraggled.
Beware of
weeds
Weeds are a gardener’s
worst enemy – FACT! So,
make sure you get in to the
habit of weeding regularly.
Remember to remove
weeds along with their roots
to reduce the chance of them
re-growing, and if there are
seeds clinging to the weeds,
don’t put them in the compost
heap. You’ll just end up
re-seeding them when you
spread the compost!
Set reminders
Set up a dedicated calendar
so you’ll have an idea
of when to complete general
gardening tasks for each
plant throughout the year.
There are also some fantastic
mobile apps that have
virtual assistants to remind
you when to water, feed,
and prune your plants, so
you can have the garden of
your dreams.

Av. de La Marina 44
(Calpe Moraira Coast Road)
THE Spanish property
market has many quirks,
and it pays to do your research
before buying a
home in Spain.
The process of buying a
property in Spain usually
runs as follows. First, the
buyer makes an offer, usually
through the seller’s
estate agent.
If this is accepted, then
the buyer and seller sign
a preliminary contract
(contrato privado de compravento)
and the buyer
pays a deposit, typically
10 per cent of the purchase
price.
The buyer then arranges
any mortgage they require,
although they should have
already discussed their
needs with the mortgage
provider. The contract of
sale (escritura de compravento)
is usually signed
in front of a notary, at
which point the full sale
by Alex Trelinski
price, taxes and other costs
become due.
The services of a notary
are not legally required to
complete the sale, but it is
advisable and required by
many mortgages.
The seller is responsible
for hidden defects in the
property, even if they are
not aware of them. However,
in practice gaining
restitution for such defects
can be difficult and costly.
Paying the costs and taxes
associated with buying a
home can be completed by
the buyer or their agent. It
is the buyer’s responsibility,
however, to ensure taxes
are paid.
The buyer is also responsible
for registering
the property. The notary
may provide this service
for a fee, and/or may notify
the registry office
Trust us to sell your property
CALL TODAY TO LIST YOUR PROPERTY
that the sale has taken
place, without completing
full registration.
Costs are primarily paid
by the buyer, and vary
across Spain. Many are
negotiable – there are no
fixed fees for lawyers or
estate agents.
Costs paid by the buyer
include:
• Property transfer tax
6–10 per cent(existing
properties) / IVA at
10 per cent (new
properties);
• Notary costs, title deed
tax and land registration
fee 1 to 2.5 per
cent;
• Legal fees 1 to 2 per
cent(including IVA).
The estate agent’s fees
are usually paid by the seller,
and this is typically their
only cost. Estate agents
usually charge a percentage,
typically around 3 per
cent of the final sale price.
Sardine tins for
the homeless?
by Simon Russell
A CONTROVERSIAL plan
in Barcelona to use shipping
containers as emergency
housing has started
construction - or rather
installation - this month.
Close to La Rambla, the
cities iconic shopping street
and one of its main visitor
attractions, the initial
12 containers have already
been craned into place.
The controversy is twofold,
the aesthetic qualities
of the housing and whether
it is right to house people in
these conditions.
However there are over
1,000 people on the emergency
waiting list alone,
many of them effectively
homeless and the council felt
they had little choice but to
pilot the scheme.
The units will be soundproofed
and have many of
the mod-cons you associate
with modern apartments.
However the council have
said that the speed of installation
is the greatest benefit,
less than a year compared
to an eight year average for
conventional new housing.
Barcelona’s public housing
stock is just 1.5%, one of the
lowest levels in Europe.
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 29
Coastal demand continues
THE prices of homes that
were sold in Spain´s coastal
regions grew by an average of
5.7 per cent over the last year,
up to 1,727 euros per metre
squared, which is 160 euros
per square foot, according to
a study published by internet
property portal idealista.
Properties on the Costa del
Sol were those that have risen
the most in the last year, with an
increase of 9.9 per cent. These
are followed by the coastal areas
of the Balearic Islands, with
a price change of 9.3 per cent.
The Costa Blanca saw a more
modest rise of 3.7 per cent,
whilst Murcia’s Costa Calida
was slightly higher at 4.1
per cent, alongside the Costa
de Valencia.
by Alex Trelinski
The Cantabrian coasts in the
north of Spain, on the other
hand, kept showing year-onyear
drops in their prices. The
greatest decrease in house
prices occurred in the Mariña
Lucense (-6.5 per cent), followed
by the Costa da Morte
in A Coruña (-1.1 per cent), the
Costa of Biscay (-0.7 per cent)
and the Costa Verde in Asturias
(-0.6 per cent).
In all other Spanish coastal
areas, property prices
increased.
The Balearic coast remains
the area with the highest prices:
3,144 euros/m 2 , or 289 euros/
sq ft. It is followed by the Costa
Guipuzcoana (2,972 euros/m 2
or 276 euros/sq ft), Maresme
(2,368 euros/m 2 or 220 euros/sq
ft) and the Costa Brava (2,250
euros/m 2 or 209 euros/sq ft).
Also above two thousand
euros are the Coast of Biscay
(2,204 euros/m 2 or 205 euros/sq
ft) and the Costa del Sol (2,030
euros/m 2 or 189 euros/sq ft).
The Mariña Lucense is the
coastal area with the lowest
prices, with sellers only asking
for 949 euros/m 2 , or 88 euros/
sq ft. Close behind it comes the
Costa da Morte with 957 euros/
m 2 , or 89 euros/sq ft, then the
Costa del Azahar in Castellón
(1,044 euros/m 2 or 97 euros/sq
ft), the Costa de Valencia (1,118
euros/m 2 or 104 euros/sq ft) and
the Costa Cálida (1,144 euros/
m 2 or 106 euros/sq ft).
Should I be having
regular smear tests?
I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and have not had a smear test since. My friend who
has also had a hysterectomy is still having regular smears. Should I be having checks?
THERE is no right or wrong
here as it depends upon
the situation. The important
issue is that the patient
knows what type
of hysterectomy she has
had and the reason for
the procedure.
During a smear test, cells
are removed from the cervix
(neck of the womb) and
examined for changes that
may lead to cancer later on.
If a woman has had a TO-
TAL hysterectomy, the cervix
will have been removed. If
she has had a SUB-TOTAL
hysterectomy the cervix will
have been conserved.
Therefore, in the case of a
sub- total hysterectomy, the
woman should attend for regular
smears. Very frequently,
women who have had a total
hysterectomy will not need to
attend as they have no cervix.
However, and this is EX-
TREMELY IMPORTANT, if
the hysterectomy was performed
as a result of cancer or
for any other reason if there
were pre- cancerous changes
or the suspicion of cancer, the
woman will still need regular
checks. In cases such as
these, a procedure known as
a vault smear is performed.
It is the same procedure but
as the woman has no cervix,
cells are removed from the
closed end of the vagina and
the vaginal walls.
All women undergoing
hysterectomy should ensure
that they know exactly what
type of surgery they are having
and ask the Gynaecologist
if ongoing smear tests
are recommended. If you are
unable to find this information
out, see your Doctor or
Practice Nurse.
Nature’s super
food – QUINOA
TODAY we would like to tell
you more about nature's
super food – QUINOA.
Not only can you make
wonders with it in your kitchen,
but you can benefit greatly
from its health benefits!
Just to name several
important health benefits
for you:
1. Quinoa is one of the most
protein-rich foods we can
eat. It is a complete protein
containing all nine
essential amino acids.
2. Quinoa contains almost
twice as much fiber as
most other grains. It
also helps to prevent
heart disease by reducing
high blood pressure
and diabetes.
3. Quinoa contains Iron.
Iron helps keep our red
blood cells healthy and
is the basis of hemoglobin
formation.
4. Quinoa contains lysine.
Lysine is mainly essential
for tissue growth
and repair.
5. Quinoa is rich in magnesium.
Magnesium helps
to relax blood vessels and
thereby to alleviate migraines.
Magnesium also
may reduce Type 2 diabetes
by promoting healthy
blood sugar control.
6. Quinoa is high in Riboflavin
(B2). B2 improves energy
metabolism within
brain and muscle cells
7. Quinoa has a high content
of manganese. Manganese
is an antioxidant,
and helps to protect your
body from free radicals
linked to cancer, aging
and many other diseases.
In short, quinoa is THE
FOOD OF CHOICE for everyone
serious to take their
health to the next level.
Here are some great
ideas how you can
use quinoa:
• In salads
• Make a stew with it
• Make quinoa pudding
• Use quinoa as a stuffing
for vegetable and meats
Quinoa and
Roasted
Pepper Chilli
THIS vegetarian chilli is
loaded with fresh vegetables,
pinto beans, and quinoa
and gets its zing from
poblano chilles.
Quinoa holds strong as
one of our favourite ingredients
for the healthy cook:
a quick-cooking, gluten-free
whole grain that’s also a
good source of protein.
Quinoa is ideal in soups
and stews because the grains
don’t soak up too much liquid.
Here it adds body and
texture to a smoky vegetarian
chilli. Chipotle chillies
are jalapeños that have been
dried and smoked.
Start with one minced chilli
in about a tablespoon of the
surrounding adobo sauce,
then add more according to
your heat preference.
Ingredients
• 2 red bell peppers
• 2 poblano chillies
• 4 teaspoons olive oil
• 3 cups chopped zucchini
• 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tablespoon chilli powder
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon Spanish
smoked paprika
• 1/2 cup water
Don’t fall at the first hurdle
TAKING those first steps
to fitness can be daunting
but experts say you’ve a
better chance of keeping
on track if you can avoid
these beginners’ blunders.
Steer clear of these five
common gym rookie errors
and you will maintain
motivation and get fitter.
1. Poor Preparation
Beginners don’t realise that
a workout actually starts
before entering the gym,
by eating the right preexercise
meal, getting fully
hydrated and stepping into
appropriate clothing.
Don’t eat anything full of fibre
or too heavy to avoid feeling
bloated, take a bottle of
water and wear a loose shirt
and shorts with appropriate
trainers.
Location is also vital to ensuring
a successful session;
don’t choose somewhere
that’s too busy, that could
be distracting or that has
disappointing facilities.
The key to preparation is
warming up the muscles; this
could be as simple as a brisk
walk to the gym followed by
some suitable stretches.
2. Over-ambition
Confidence is key to starting
an exercise journey, but
Parents advised to
check that poor eye
sight is not holding
their children back
OPTICIANS are using the
start of the new school
year as an opportunity to
inform parents and children
of the importance of
regular eye tests.
At the start of term, they
recommend that parents
take their children to a
professional who can check
their vision and take the
right measures to ensure
that their eye sight is not
holding them back. Poor
vision can inhibit learning
and hold them back from
performing well in sports.
Juan Carlos Martínez
Moral, president of the
General Council of Colleges
of Opticians-Optometrists
(CGCOO), says: ‘As vision
can often change during
your school career, it is important
to have regular eye
examinations by an optician-optometrist.
By having
your eyes tested at least
once a year, you can rule out
refractive problems such
as long-sightedness, shortsightedness,
or astigmatism;
binocular vision abnormalities
such as strabismus,
or amblyopia, popularly
referred to as “lazy eye”.’
Francisco Jurado from optical
group Specsavers Ópticas
agrees: ‘We have seen
a high number of children
needing glasses across our
opticians in Spain and experts
around the world are
reporting a sharp increase
in myopia in young children.
The difficulty with children
with poor eye sight is they
often don’t realise there is
anything wrong before it is
identified in an eye test. This
means they struggle unnecessarily
at school and can be
misdiagnosed with learning
difficulties simply because
of their poor vision. To avoid
issues like these, we also
recommend yearly eye tests
for children before they go to
full-time education and incorporating
an eye test into
the “Back to School” routine
to pick up any changes early,
many first-time gym-goers
and running rookies make
the mistake of trying to do
too much too soon.
It is necessary for novices
to be realistic about their
current with current abilities
and limits and to know
what their objectives in the
short and long-term.
The best approach is to
steadily build a foundation
of fitness – remember every
single session doesn’t need to
be a personal best.
3. Unbalanced
routines
Failing to strike a balance
between cardiovascular calo-
before it starts to effect their
learning.’
According to charity
ONCE, they have 4,245
members aged 18 and under
who are suffering from
low vision or blindness
and studies show that one
out of every four children
has an undetected vision
problem that may inhibit
their progress.
Common eye conditions
can all be identified with a
complete eye test. The sooner
that vision problems are
detected, the better the outcome.
Conditions such as
squint and amblyopia (lazy
eye) can be treated more effectively
if they are picked
up earlier.
Book a Back to School eye
test at Specsavers Ópticas
during September and see
their range of glasses which
are specially designed for
children, including a new
range of Toy Story glasses.
rie burning and strength or
weight training will not help
achieve fitness goals.
It is normal to have a specific
focus or objective, such
as gaining arm strength or
training for a race, but overall
fitness can only be achieved
by including the whole body
in workout regimes.
Never skip leg day. It
has become a cliché among
exercise enthusiasts, but
overlooking the lower body
will eventually result in the
double-whammy of looking
stupid and getting hurt.
4. Losing motivation
The novelty will wear off
naturally as with any new
activity, but the only way
to consistently uphold and
improve fitness levels is to
maintain motivation.
Do this by keeping music or
podcast playlists vibrant and
up to date, but definitely avoid
off-putting books; the gym is
for exercise, not story time.
Also accept that injuries
can happen even with all the
correct precautions; elite athletes,
such as Olympic medallists,
are susceptible to an
occasional strained muscle –
beginners will be too.
Though an obvious physical
barrier in the short-term,
an injury should not become a
mental obstacle and discourage
beginners from all that is
good about getting active.
Working out with a friend
can also be a great inspiration
in the gym.
5. Neglecting
recovery
The warm-down after hitting
the gym or pounding the pavements
is crucial to getting the
most out of exercise.
Inadequate rest and recovery
between sessions could
cause injuries, but that doesn’t
mean an immediate lie down
on the sofa post-workout.
Do some light stretches
covering the whole body and
gradually decrease movement
to avoid stiffness later that
day or the following morning;
consider, for example, a walk
to the shops. Warm-down by
strolling around the local high
street, as this can also provide
the opportunity to rehydrate
and refuel, which is pivotal
to recovery and reaping longterm
benefits.
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 35
Pets
More than
a stroll in
the park
ARE you a social stroller
or an escapist? New research
has revealed the
benefits people get from
walking their dog.
Eight out of ten dog owners
say they take their pet
out for a stroll just go get
some peace and quiet.
As well as exercising
their pooch, 71 per cent believe
this space is a vital destressing
tool in the hustle
and bustle of life, while
time spent with mans’ best
friend gives more than three
quarters of owners valuable
thinking time.
The study discovered that
one in five dog owners have
made a major life decision
while out on a walk – using
the time to mull over a
problem or dilemma.
And that includes more
than one in four who have
decided to end a relationship
while exercising their pet.
Others have made the decision
to move home, change
jobs, start their own business
or even try for a baby.
Not getting out on the
walk can make owners
guilty, irritable and even
sad, according the research.
The study was carried out
amongst 2,000 dog owners.
Gemma Cunningham, brand
manager for YuMOVE, which
commissioned the research,
said: “Walking the dog is one
of the most important jobs as
an owner.
“But while it is primarily
for the benefit of the dog, it
can also be beneficial for dog
owners too.
“Getting away from everyday
life for a bit while you go
on a quiet stroll can give you
some much needed time with
man’s best friend to clear
your head and enjoy some
time to yourself – something
many can struggle to
get otherwise.”
The study also found the
average dog owner heads out
on eight walks with their pet
a week, and with each one
lasting around 30 minutes –
so that comes to four hours
of thinking time per week.
Most of the owners
quizzed also spoke of the
benefits of exercise while
six in 10 enjoy the chance to
have quality time with their
canine companion.
Being outdoors, meeting
other dog owners and discovering
new places are also
among the reported benefits
of walking the dog.
A quarter of owners use it
as an opportunity to go for
a stroll with their partner
while, 13 per cent take their
children along.
As a result, 35 per cent
say walking together has
bought them more laughter
and enjoyment, while
15 per cent say it has made
them more trusting. Others
say they are now more honest
with each other and also
more supportive.
So it’s little wonder that
walking the dog isn’t seen
as a chore, with 97 per cent
of owners generally enjoying
the task and with more
than a quarter disappointed
if they don’t get chance to go
out as planned.
Gemma added: “It is also
clear there are several kinds
of dog walkers who find different
purpose and meaning
in their daily walks.
“Whether it is to spend
more time together with the
family, get more exercise or
simply find some peace and
quiet, the walk can bring a
wide range of benefits.”
Kotor
THE
old town – that is the most
famous part of Kotor, where
the Kotor history, culture, and
tradition are being preserved.
The old town of Kotor has a
great number of monuments
of the medieval architecture –
churches, cathedrals, palaces
and museums. Its beauty is complemented
with the multitude
of narrow streets, squares and
markets.
The old town also stands out
due to the great number of stylishly-made
gates, palaces of the
wealthy families, and a great
number of stairs.
Today, the old nucleus of Kotor
is considered to be the best
preserved medieval urban entity
in the Mediterranean. The largest
and the most impressive are,
without doubt, city bulwarks
which surround the town.
They are about 5km long, 20m
high and about 10m wide. Being
completely preserved, they are
a unique sample of the fortification
architecture in Europe. The
beginning of their construction
started in the 9th century.
Bulwarks have 3 doors,
through which for centuries
people have come in and out of
the town. From whichever door
you enter the town, the road will
bring you to the most famous edifice
– Cathedral of Sveti Tripun,
from the 12th century, which is
dedicated to the protector of the
town – Sveti Tripun.
There are several squares in
the town and the main, and the
biggest, city square is Trg od
oruzja (Square of arms). That
square was, and remained, the
main place for gathering. Various
gatherings happened there.
Cultural richness of Kotor is
made priceless by its treasury
which hides some significant
cultural monuments like Tower
Watch (8th century), Cathedral
of Sveti Tripun (12th century),
Church of Sveti Luka (12th century),
Prince’s Palace (17th century),
Church of Sveta Marija
(12th century), Church of Lady
of Health (15th century) and Napoleon’s
Theatre (19th century).
Old Kotor also has numerous
palaces, such as Bizanti, Buca,
Pima and Grgurin, which today
houses the Maritime museum.
FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 37
RIO de Janeiro is the second
largest city in Brazil,
Rio used to be the Capital
city until April 1960 when
the honour was taken up
by the Brasilia, a new built
city in the Highlands of
Brazil.
Famous for it’s beaches of
Copacabana and Ipanema,
the Rio de Janeiro is also
known for it’s world famous
statue of Christ the Redeemer,
located overlooking the
city. Built between 1922 and
1931, the statue is a towering
30 meters high and 28 me-
ters wide and was built as a
symbol of Christianity.
The best way to visit the
monument is by Cog Train,
which winds up through the
green foliage of the Tijuka
Natural park, offering stunning
scenery offering views
of the city in it’s wake. The
by Yvonne Hollywood,
Worldwide Horizons
train leaves every 30 minutes
and can be booked
in advance.
Back down on ground level,
what could be more Brazilian
than visiting Copacabana
Beach? Rebuilt in 1970 with
a long walkway, the beach is
well served by bars and restaurants
on the 4km paved
area.
Each New Year, around
two million people visit this
beach to witness one of the
world’s most spectacular firework
display to welcome in
the new year.
A little further along the
coast, you will find Ipanema
Beach, one of the best places
to take a dip. The surrounding
area of this beach is where
local artists gather and has
an altogether more hippy feel
to it. Both beach areas are
well served by hotels and local
accommodation, from the
truly 5 star to the adventurous
home rentals.
It is good to note that Copacabana
and Ipanema areas
are two of the three safest
places to stay whilst in Rio.
They are also the some of
the best places to enjoy the
nightlife of the city, complete
with hip nightclubs as well
as many places featuring live
music.
And one can’t think of Rio
without mentioning the huge
Carnival that takes place
there annually in February.
This is the party to end all
parties, held over a 4-5 day
period, a parade of thousands
of persons in some of the
most colourful costumes that
can be imagined. This event
has developed over the years
(it first started around 1723,
so these people know how to
party!) and now many of the
events held at it are ticketed
events – a good idea to buy in
advance given that there can
be up to 2 million visitors to
the festival on a daily basis!
The best time to visit Rio
is between December and
March, when the weather is
at its best.
The currency is Brazilian
Real, with €100 buying you
around 450 reais. Around
45 Reais is the cost of a nice
wine, accompanying a meal
which costs around 50-100
reais.
The new
Land Rover
Defender
AN icon reimagined for the
21st century; it has been
cleverly engineered with
capability and safety for
all the family at its heart.
The unmistakable silhouette
is familiar yet new. It
looks tough and is tough
but designed with purpose
and engineered to excite.
Iconic in name, shape and
capability, Defender can be
personalised to allow owners
to make the most of their
world.
Beside the peerless luxury
and refinement of the Range
Rover family and the highly
capable and versatile Discovery
SUVs, new Defender
completes the Land Rover
dynasty. The 110 is just the
start for this family of the
most capable and durable
4x4s in the world. It will be
swiftly followed by a short
wheelbase 90, before a pair of
practical commercial models
join the line-up in 2020.
Design
A distinctive silhouette
makes the new Defender
instantly recognisable, with
minimal front and rear overhangs
providing excellent approach
and departure angles.
Land Rover’s designers reenvisioned
familiar Defender
trademarks for the 21st
century, giving the new 4x4
a purposeful upright stance
and Alpine light windows in
the roof, while retaining the
side-hinged rear tailgate and
externally-mounted spare
wheel that make the original
so identifiable.
The stripped-back personality
of the original Defender
has been embraced inside,
where structural elements
and fixings usually hidden
from view have been exposed,
with the emphasis
on simplicity and practicality.
Innovative features include
a dash-mounted gear
shifter to accommodate an
optional central front ‘jump’
seat, which provides threeabreast
seating across the
front like early Land Rovers.
As a result, the Defender
110 offers five, six or 5+2
seating configurations, with a
loadspace behind the secondrow
seats of up to 1,075 litres,
and as much as 2,380-li-
tres when the second row is
folded. The 90 will be able to
accommodate six occupants
in a vehicle the length of a
compact family hatchback.
Personalise
New Defender will be available
in 90 and 110 body designs,
with up to six seats
in the 90 and the option of
five, six or 5+2 seating in the
110. The model range comprises
Defender, S, SE, HSE,
First Edition and top of the
range Defender X models
and customers will be able
to personalise their vehicle
in more ways than any previous
Land Rover with four
Accessory Packs. The Explorer,
Adventure, Country
and Urban Packs each give
Defender a distinct character
with a specially selected
range of enhancements. The
exclusive First Edition model
features a unique specification
and will be available
throughout the first model
year of production.
Customers will even be
able to opt for a new Satin
Protective Film to make
the exterior paintwork even
more durable. The sustainable,
solvent-free and completely
recyclable wrap helps
protect against everything
from car park scratches to
bramble rash and will be
available as a factory-fit option
with Indus Silver, Gondwana
Stone and Pangea
Green colours, providing a
unique contemporary finish
as it protects new Defender’s
paintwork.
Nuevo Clase A Sedán.
Just like you.
La gama Clase A se amplía con una nueva berlina que
Motoring
Beauty and a beast
THE normally urbane Audi
A7 Sportback is about to
bare fangs again as the
successor to the original
RS 7 brings 600PS and
800Nm to bear on the 2019
Frankfurt Motor Show.
More power meets greater
practicality and improved efficiency
in the new second
generation model, which
for the first time houses five
seats and a mild hybrid drivetrain
within its significantly
broadened body.
The exterior
Although unmistakably descended
from the A7 Sportback,
with which it in fact
shares only its bonnet, roof,
front doors and tailgate, the
new RS 7 Sportback looks
perpetually ready to wield its
sledgehammer performance
– its sinewy body virtually
hugs the road surface, and its
sizeable wheels are shrouded
by boldly flared arches that
leave no margin for doubt
about the mettle of this latest
Audi Sport offering.
To accentuate the
1,951-millimetre width even
further, the front of the new
RS 7 Sportback features a
broad, flat Singleframe with
no contrasting border. The
radiator protective grille
with its gloss black RSspecific
three-dimensional
honeycomb structure and
the large front air inlets and
vertical fins also contribute
to the dramatic stance, as do
the horizontal blade marking
a distinctive downward
edge to the front end and the
RS matrix LED laser headlights
with their dark bezels
and dynamic indicators.
Along with the rear LED
lights, these ultra-sophisticated
units also run through
RS-specific ‘animation’ sequences
when the vehicle is
locked and unlocked.
The interior
Much like the exterior design,
the architecture inside the
new RS 7 Sportback combines
taut surfacing with
clearly defined contours, and
seamlessly integrates the futuristic
user interface. The
upper MMI touch response
display is embedded in the
predominantly black architecture
in a way that renders
it almost impossible to see
where the display ends and
the surroundings begin. The
driver can use the upper RS
monitor display to call up an
overview of drive system component
temperatures, maximum
g-forces and information
regarding tyre pressures
and temperatures.
Special RS displays use
the Audi virtual cockpit to
provide details of tyre pressure,
torque, performance, oil
temperature, boost pressure,
lap times, acceleration, and g-
forces. The shift light display
prompts the driver to upshift
when the rev limit is reached.
RS sport seats upholstered
with perforated Valcona
leather featuring a
honeycomb pattern and RS
embossing are standard, positioning
the driver perfectly
behind the flat-bottomed,
fully perforated RS sport
leather steering wheel with
new large RS aluminium
shift paddles and multifunction
buttons, including the
RS MODE button, which
the driver can use to enable
the new Audi drive select
RS1 and RS2 modes. This
automatically opens the RSspecific
displays in the Audi
virtual cockpit. The RS and
RS 7 logos adorn the steering
wheel, seats, and illuminated
front door sill trims.
Logo projectors on the front
and rear doors beam the
Audi Sport emblem onto
the ground when the doors
are open.
KEEPING
IT PINK
SOME of the best rainbows that I have ever seen
have been here in Spain, but a Scottish photographer
clicked something special, as he got a
pink rainbow during sunrise.
Sinclair Cunningham was out in the countryside
looking to capture a striking pink sunrise on his
camera, when he came across the rainbow.
In eight years of taking pictures, the self-employed
photographer says he has never seen a pink rainbow,
which tends to occur either during sunrise or sunset.
The rainbow appeared in the sky at 6.00am near
the ‘Kissing Trees’ in Kinghorn, Fife.
Sinclair said: ‘I turned round and saw the pink
rainbow and just got into position to capture it with
the Kissing Trees in the shot and the rainbow dipping
down into it”.
I suggest that Sinclair spends some time over
here, and he will have a rainbow field day, assuming
it rains.
SLOWEST CHASE EVER
I love watching a good car
chase in the movies or on the
TV, but I’m not sure how high
my excitement levels would
have reached after a man was
arrested last Saturday night after
leading a
leading a 14mph police chase in
a stolen tractor!
Armed police chased the runaway
driver after he refused to
pull over on a road in Lincolnshire,
and attempted to stop the
STRAY KITTY CHAOS
SPARKY the kitten caused a lot She had heard the kitten’s meows
of bother as he got trapped in a from her lounge but when she went out
car, which then had to be partially and checked she could not find anything.
dismantled, as Sparky was firmly She called her father and they eventually
tracked the cries down to her car’s
wedged in the engine compartment.
Six-week-old stray Sparky’s plaintive
cries were heard coming from Zoe A wheel and the headlights had to
engine compartment.
Slocombe’s parked car in Huntingdon,
Cambridgeshire.
and they wrapped him in a blanket and
come out so they could reach the kitten ,
Her father then took the front of the gave him some food and water before
car apart to get to the kitten.
taking him to a vet.
Ms Slocombe(cue pussy joke from “Are Experts said the little kitten was
You Being Served” ?) said she wrapped lucky to have survived and he’s been
the kitten in a blanket and he is now being
cared for by the RSPCA.
ing him a
looked after by the RSPCA ahead of find-
home.
vehicle because it had no lights
and was believed to be stolen.
However, the driver ignored
their warning signals and led the
cops on Britain’s slowest ever pursuit
– causing damage to one police
vehicle.
Armed officers were forced to
get involved and form a road block
to bring the motorist to a halt
near Market Rasen.
Don’t expect this chase to hit
the big screen soon!

Puzzles & Tarotscope
NESSIE’S AN EEL
I’VE been to Loch Ness in Scotland
a couple of times, and of
course it’s all about spotting that
monster, which of course has
been a great fabrication just to
boost tourism.
But scientists from New Zealand
reckon they have come up with an
obvious reason for what Nessie might
really be, namely giant eels.
The researchers have tried to catalogue
all living species in the loch by
extracting DNA from water samples.
Following analysis, the scientists
SO much for some species of tra-
ditional fish being served up with
chips back in Britain, as a survey
done by The Mirror newspaper
shows all kinds of stuff, including
endangered species of shark being
sold at chippies.
A DNA probe found dishes such as
rock salmon contained spiny dogfish
and starry smooth-hound.
A Mirror investigation discovered
threatened spiny dogfish and starry
smooth-hound were being passed off
have ruled out the presence
of large animals
said to be behind reports
of a monster.
No evidence of a prehistoric
marine reptile called a plesiosaur
or a large fish such as a
sturgeon(Not, Nicola) were found.
Catfish and suggestions that a wandering
Greenland shark were behind
the sightings were also discounted.
But they have reached a conclusion
that some of the Nessie sightings
down the years may in fact have
FISHY BUSINESS
as rock salmon, huss and rock eels to
unsuspecting customers.
Campaigners have now called for
better labelling so wholesalers and
chippies know exactly what species of
fish they are selling.
Scientists tested 15 battered samples
bought at resort towns including
Bournemouth, Brighton, Clacton,
Great Yarmouth, Newquay and Poole.
The Marine Conservation Society
said the research showed “most consumers
are completely unaware of
been giant European eels, based on
the DNA samples.
Not exciting, but using logic, we
probably have the answer to the Loch
Ness Monster sightings, and a blow
to the local tourist industry.
what they’re eating”.
Its head of fisheries and aquaculture
Samuel Stone added: “Chippies should
provide better information and labelling
at the point of sale.”
That’s fair enough, but I suspect
chippies are being sold stuff that is not
the real deal, and I do have some sympathy
for them.
UNIFORM
NONSENSE
IT’S been “back to existing students.
school” for the last So no skirts for
week or so for many girls(really), and the argument
is over “concerns”
youngsters in the UK,
and also in Spain, and over the length of the
that means that there skirts, with the new rules
had to be some institution
getting em-
of transgender pupils.
also catering for a handful
broiled in a row over 150 parents and pupils
school uniforms. staged a protest over the
I’m from the radical
view of things that with the protestors say-
gender neutral uniforms,
they are an utter waste ing that the youngsters
of time and money, and should have a choice to
that the focus should be wear skirts, while others
on education.
believe clothes are being
wasted.
That’s why I especially
have no time for the political
correctness of the have had to buy trousers
So returning pupils
Priory School in Lewes, for the new school year, as
West Sussex who crazily the skirts are dumped.
decided to make trousers It just doesn’t make any
compulsory for new and sense.

DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A black-andwhite
crossword-style grid is set up for
each quote, with a number of letters
“hovering” above each column. Your task
is to “drop” each of those letters into
the appropriate square in each column,
until the entire quote is revealed. All
punctuation (commas, periods, dashes,
etc.) has been removed. Good luck!
PRETTY WOMAN
HEADS UP WEST
Hard to believe that the movie Pretty
Woman is nearly thirty years old, yes
thirty.
The box office smash, starring
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, first
released in 1990, is a classic story
focusing on an eccentric sex worker
by the name of Vivian Ward who
is hired by wealthy businessman
Edward Lewis to escort him to several
high-flying social and business
events.
Fans of the film will be delighted to
learn that a musical adaptation of the
movie will hit the West End stage on
Valentine’s Day next year.
The Piccadilly Theatre will play host
Boris and
Theresa?
to Pretty Woman: The Musical for a
very limited run, with Bryan Adams
stepping in to helm the tunes.
No word has been released on who
will play the lead roles, but I’m
guessing that Boris Johnson and
Theresa May aren’t in the running.
HOLOGRAM WHITNEY ON TOUR
Not sure how I feel about hearing
that a Whitney Houston hologram
is set to tour the UK next year,
according to reports.
Apparently, though details are still
sketchy, the show will be staged
by Base Entertainment, which has
previously produced holograms
of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison,
with one based on Amy Winehouse
apparently in the works.
The concerts are set to feature
many of the major hits released by
Houston, who passed away in 2012.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody
(Who Loves Me) and The Greatest
Love of All are expected to be
included, with the New York Times
reporting original band members
and backing singers are lined up to
perform alongside the hologram.
I suppose for diehard fans the
chance to hear a flawless Whitney
perform again is hard to resist,
particularly as some of her last
Whitney
on the wall
appearances prior to her death
were plain embarrassing.
Mind you I went to a Chris Rea
concert once and may aswell have
been watching a hologram……He
had as much personality as the
wall.
our Homolulu float.
Well, I’m very happy to report that
we had a fantastic time, despite a
few technical hitches, leaving us
without music for a large part of
the route and torrential rain as we
decorated our transport.
Huge thanks to everyone who
jumped onboard and walked
alongside and to those who
helped get it ready.
This year’s festival was one of
the best, so congratulations to
everyone involved, organisers,
performers, participants
and spectators.
Benidorm has had a tough year,
with a negative campaign waged
against us by certain parts of the
UK media, so it was nice to give a
big finger to all the Beni knockers
and show them that when we want
to, we can put on a show to beat
them all.
GRAHAM’S IN IT FOR
THE LONG HAUL
Having recently reached an age
where, had I stayed in the UK, I
would almost certainly already
have retired, but as I live and
work in Spain, the chances of
me finishing work are next to
zero, I was comforted to read the
thoughts of chat show supremo
Graham Norton.
Speaking on what the future
holds on US radio show SiriusXM,
Graham said: ‘What I might try
to do is just cut back on my
workload. Then I would be able to
stare at a wall, write a book, walk
the dogs…’
However, he added that friends
who have retired have convinced
Teenage
daydream
Graham
him that it’s a terrible idea.
‘What’s odd is, when you stop
working you become a teenage
girl,’ he said. ‘You start obsessing
about minutiae. I don’t want to
turn into that person.’
You’re right Graham, neither do I,
but I don’t want to stare at a wall
either.
Jamie’s Out
So this year’s Strictly Come Dancing hasn’t
even reached the live shows and already
there’s been a casualty.
Made in Chelsea’s blond bombshell, Jamie
Laing has pulled out owing to an injury
sustained in training.
He quit at the weekend after damaging
a tendon in his right foot during a
group number, claims that he told his
professional dance partner, Oti Mabusi,
about his ailment but she told him to grin
and bear it.
“It felt like someone had hit me on the back
of it with a belt. like stepping on glass,”
said Jaimie, “I grabbed Oti and said, ‘Oti
something’s happened to my foot,’ and she
just went, ‘Dance.’”
There’s been lots of speculation that Jamie
will return to Strictly next year, but for this
Jamie’s quit
Strictly
series he has been replaced by Emmerdale
hunk Kelvin Fletcher, who plays Andy
Sugden in the Northern soap.
Not quite chalk and cheese ….. more like
Moet and a mug of Yorkshire tea.

FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2019 45
Sports & Local News
Montgo
Golf Society
Stableford
competition
TODAY Montgo Golf Society
played a Stableford competition
at Oliva Nova in overcast
conditions and a refreshingly
cool comfortable
temperature. Our sponsor
Tom Atkinson presented a
grand selection of prizes.
Celia Cronin shot a handsome
38 points to claim first
place, followed by Jan Jones,
a stalwart of the society, just
behind with 37 points. Richard
Delaney was third one
point behind with a 36.
Neil Carter returning from
a summer break had nearest
the pin on the 3rd, Gordon
Gleeson claimed the NTP on
the fifth, whilst another returnee,
Brian Redfearn was
within one metre of the 16th
hole to claim that prize.
Two’s today were scored by
Pamela Cook, Celia Cronin
and Dennis Hammond.
So the Montgo ball stock is
yet further depleted!
It was good to play with
our returning members Martin
and Pamela Cook, Sue
Burman and Dennis Hammond,
Neil Carter, and Brian
Redfearn. David Fotheringham
was also spotted in the
crowd. Welcome back you all.
Next week’s medal competition
is for Paul Tolley’s
Rose Bowl.
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
INTERNATIONAL BREAK 1
JUST as the Alfaz Fantasy
Football League gets going
we are interrupted with an
International Break. Well
at least it’s not the usual
meaningless Friendlies as
they have two Euro Qualifying
games against Bulgaria
and Kosovo.
The break gives us a
chance to reflect on what has
happened so far in Premier
League and the A.F.F.L. We
have over 200 teams taking
part in this season’s Fantasy
as well as having 13 Mini-
Leagues.
The Fantasy League got
off to a bad start with the
Transfer Window closing
before the Premier League
started.
Unfortunately the European
Leagues kept their
Window open ‘til the 1st September
which meant some of
our Managers lost players
to Europe.
In the opening four weeks
of the Premier League we
have seen Liverpool with a
100% record and Manchester
City hanging on to their
coat-tails in second place.
The early front-runners
in the A.F.F.L. are Isobel’s
team, The Bluebells, who
are the present leaders.
Stephen’s Vote for Pedro,
Kapur’s Napali Eleven and
we have two teams in joint
fourth spot, Keith’s Max &
Paddy and Debbie’s Foxy
Filberts. Tony Red’s Miles
Platting Swifts were top for
the first two weeks, but they
have now dropped down
to tenth.
Top Players so far in
this season’s Fantasy are
as follows:
Top Keepers: Wolves
Patricio, Everton’s Pickford
and Crystal Palace’s Guita
all on 12 points, one more
than Manchester City’s Ederson.
Top Defenders are Palace’s
Van Aaholt (19), Everton’s
Digne (15) and Liverpool’s
Van Dijk (14).
Top Midfielders are Liverpool’s
Mo Salah (31), Manchester
City’s Raheem Sterling
(29) and his team-mate
Kevin De Bruyne (26).
Top Strikers are Manchester
City’s hardy annual
marksman Sergio Aguero,
who is the top scorer of the
season so far with a tally of
39 points.
The second highest scorer
is Norwich’s Finnish striker
Pukki with 35 points to his
name. He could be this season’s
hidden gem.
The most selected player
this season in the A.F.F.L.
is, suprisingly, Spurs’ Harry
Kane, with no fewer than
95 Fantasy Managers putting
their faith in this North
London Striker.
The nearest player to him
is Manchester City’s Sergio
Aguero with 80 selections.
(I know who I would rather
have in my line-up).
Most selected Keeper is
Manchester City’s extra
Midfielder Ederson who has
58 followers.
Top Defender is Manchester
United’s new recruit
Harry Maguire who was
backed by 79 Managers. The
inform Raheem Sterling was
the most selected Mid-fielder
with 78, which is more picks
than Liverpool’s Mo Salah,
who only managed 57.
Moving on to our Fantasy
League tables, we have had
three different leaders of our
Mark Carter Ladies Section.
Elaine’s Barbra’s XI, who
finished Runners-Up in this
section last season, was fast
out of the traps in the first
week by being the first team
at the summit.
They were quickly
usurped by Jayne’s team, Up
the Dale, who stayed at the
top for two weeks before losing
out to the present leaders,
Isobel’s The Bluebells
In our Junior League,
young Olly’s Team, Olly 11,
have taken full control in the
early stages with a comfortable
14 point advantage over
Harley’s Ginger Ninjar.
Last years winners of this
section, William & Henry,
had a brief one week spell at
the top but they soon gave
way to one of our new Junior
Managers teams, Frankie’s
More Than a Game, who
also lasted one week in
pole position.
The Golden Boot League,
which is sponsored by Rachel
at the Across the Costasas,
has been very competitive
already with no fewer
than four teams tasting life
at the top. Tony Red’s Miles
Platting Swifts (first week),
Jayne’s Up the Dale (second
week), Macca’s Albir Villains
(third week) and the leaders
now Stephen’s Vote for Pedro
have all been there. Don’t
forget, in this league only
goals scored earn you points.
If a Defender scores he
gets 10 points, a Midfielder
7 points and a forward 5
points. If one of your players
scores an own goal, those
scores become minus. Top
players in this league are
Raheem Sterling (35), Sergio
Aguero (30) and Pukki (25).
Macca’s Albir Villains
have been in charge of our
Champion of Champions
League for three of the four
weeks, but they now have
had to make way for one of
our top Lady Teams, Pauline’s
Vodka Army, who have
a slim five point lead over
the Villains at the top.
Overall the Fantasy
League has got off to a flying
start with 113 goals in
80 Premier League games
(mind you Defenders have
contributed to that tally
with four own goals, one
more than last season).
We have had 124 yellow
cards and five red ones. I
think VAR has a lot to answer
for in those figures.
This time last year nine
players had seen red. I
believe most referees are
frightened of making a mistake
because Big Brother is
watching them!
The full draw for our
K.O. Cup competition is
now up on our website and
will take place the weekend
of September 20th.
Lets hope all our players
come back from the International
Break fully fit and
ready to go again.

Canadian
stunner
TEENAGER Bianca Andreescu
stunned Serena
Williams in a gripping
US Open final to claim a
first Grand Slam title last
weekend and deny the
American a 24th major.
Williams, 37, did not cope
with the 19-year-old's quality
in a 6-3 7-5 loss.
Canadian 15th seed Andreescu,
in the main draw
here for the first time, blew
a double break in the second
by Alex Trelinski
set before taking her third
match point and falling to
the ground in disbelief.
"This year has been a
dream come true," Andreescu
told the crowd.
"I am beyond grateful and
truly blessed. I've worked really
hard for this moment.
To play on this stage against
Serena - a true legend of the
sport - is amazing."
No deal Neymar
BARCELONA will not make
a move for Paris St-Germain
forward Neymar in January,
says Barca club president
Josep Maria Bartomeu.
by Alex Trelinski
The La Liga champìons
spent all summer trying to
negotiate a deal to re-sign
the Brazilian, who moved
to France for a world record
220 million euros in 2017.
However, the two clubs
were ultimately unable to
agree a deal.
Asked whether it was possible
for Barca to sign Neymar
in January, Bartomeu
said:"No. Right now, no."
Casey’s tight win
Marc’s Marino bid
THE 2019 MotoGP season
resumes this weekend
with the San Marino GP,
and Spain’s Marc Marquez
continuing his domination
of the title race.
The Misano circuit opened
50 years ago, and has seen
plenty of Italian success in
the past, though all eyes will
be on world champion Marquez,
who has admitted that
his failure to win races twice
by Alex Trelinski
in a row at Silverstone and
Austria have been his worst
moments of the year.
The perfectionist that
Marquez is and despite the
fact he leads the standings,
he said that losing on the
last lap at Silverstone in late
August to fellow Spaniard,
Alex Rins, was also hard
to take.
PAUL Casey won his first
European Tour title for
five years with a onestroke
victory at the
Porsche European Open
last Sunday.
Marquez though is on 250
points, 78 points clear of second-placed
Andrea Dovizioso,
and he’ll be hoping that
the Italian won’t be bring on
a home victory this Sunday.
Back to back wins
FERRARI'S Charles Leclerc
by Alex Trelinski
maiden win in Belgium a week
held on under intense pressure
earlier, and Ferrari's first at
from both Mercedes
drivers to win an exciting
Italian Grand Prix at Monza
last Sunday.
Leclerc's victory was his
second in a row, following his
their home race since Fernando
Alonso triumphed in
2010. The 21-year-old pushed
the rules on driving conduct
to hold off Lewis Hamilton
through the middle of the race
before Valtteri Bottas took up
the challenge in the closing
laps after a mistake from the
world champion.
Bottas finished second
and his teammate Hamilton
third, with Singapore
to come a week on Sunday,
and Hamilton a healthy 63
points ahead of Bottas in
the championship.
by Alex Trelinski
Casey shot a six-under 66
in Hamburg to finish ahead
of Scotland's Bob MacIntyre,
German Bernd Ritthammer
and Matthias Schwab
of Austria.
It was a second victory
of 2019 for the 42-year-old
after success at the Valspar
Championship on the
PGA Tour.
"This is an incredibly
prestigious tournament,"
said Casey. "I'm over the
moon to be European
Open champion."
Fantastic final
RAFA Nadal won his 19th by Alex Trelinski
His victory moves him
Grand Slam title on Sunday
within one of Swiss rival
night, after holding cruising at two sets and a Roger Federer's all-time
off Russian Daniil Medvedev's
exhilarating fightback
in one of the greatest
US Open finals.
The Spanish star won 7-5
6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4 against the
fifth seed in New York.
Nadal, seeded second, was
break up, only for Medvedev
to force a decider.
But Nadal stopped his
momentum to clinch a thrilling
win in four hours and 50
minutes - just four minutes
shorter than the longest US
Open final.
leading tally of men's Grand
Slam victories.
"It has been one of the
most emotional nights in
my tennis career," Nadal
said. "It has been an amazing
final. It has been a crazy
match."

FIVE
JURGEN Klopp’s Liverpool
will be first out of the traps
as the Premier League returns
this weekend after
the international break.
The Reds will go for five
straight wins as they play
Newcastle United at Anfield
tomorrow lunchtime
Liverpool is the only
team that have a 100 per
cent record in the Premier
League, and will fancy
their chances against Steve
Bruce’s Newcastle United.
Having said that, the last
road-trip for Newcastle produced
a one-nil win at Spurs,
though most suspect the Geordies
will be fighting a long
by Alex Trelinski
battle against relegation.
Champions Manchester
City are two points behind
Liverpool, and they go to
early strugglers Norwich for
the Saturday evening clash.
Leicester City have started
well and have a Saturday
afternoon trip to Manchester
United to look forward
to, with the home side still
smarting from all the costly
missed penalties they have
had this season, plus that late
late show by Crystal Palace.
Roy Hodgson’s side are
fourth in an unfamiliarlooking
table, and they
have a London derby clash
at Tottenham tomorrow.
Frank Lampard has
quickly discovered that
high profile Premier League
management is a different
kettle of fish from running
a Championship team, and
you sense that defeat at
Sheffield United, who have
easily looked the best of the
promoted sides, will get the
early panic button pressed
at Stamford Bridge.
Sunday sees Quique return
as boss of bottom side
Watford, and the Vicarage
Road outfit will be looking
for an immediate bounce as
they entertain Arsenal.
Benidorm
