Law and order on the agenda
THE centre right Ciudadanos
(Cs) party have tabled
motions in the Congress
of Deputies aimed at tackling
what they see as an
increasing breakdown in
law and order, especially
in some inner cities.
Crime in Barcelona, for
example, has risen by 30%
recently, something that has
been picked up by the press
in countries such as Germany
and the UK where many
visitors to the Catalan capital
come from.
“Multi-recidivism” is one
area that needs addressing
they say, whereby if a thief
by Simon Russell
steals less than €400 it is
classed as a minor offence
and not a crime.
Many career thieves are
aware of this and risk nothing
more than a fine however
many times they re-offend.
The Cs have proposed that
these serial offenders should
be eligible for harsher fines,
including prison sentences,
after committing three or
more such thefts.
They also say that any foreigners
here illegally found
guilty of a crime be deported
back to their home country,
with many currently getting
round this due to the
€400 law.
Their other main proposal
is a crackdown on squatters,
especially in city centres
where it has become rife in
some places.
Apart from the distress
and financial loss to the
home owner, many of these
squats are also used as a
base for crime and drug
dealing with eviction being
a costly and long winded
process say the Cs.
They want an eviction
process introduced which is
“quick and streamlined”.
