Altea Moors and Christians<br />
LATER this month the<br />
townspeople of Altea will<br />
step back a few centuries<br />
to celebrate the traditional<br />
battles between the Moors<br />
and Christian forces.<br />
The annual Moros y Cristianos<br />
fiesta is the biggest<br />
on Altea’s calendar, beloved<br />
by locals and visitors for its<br />
spectacular parades, firework<br />
displays and parties.<br />
Penyas, or social clubs, are<br />
paid into by fundraising activities<br />
throughout the year,<br />
so that during the week long<br />
fiesta they are able to set<br />
up makeshift bars in empty<br />
buildings, garages and<br />
shops, that serve food and<br />
drink to their members.<br />
These penyas are busy<br />
throughout the fiestas, but<br />
the main activities to watch<br />
out for are the parades which<br />
snake through the streets of<br />
the town.<br />
The real festivities begin<br />
on Friday September 20th,<br />
at midnight, when both the<br />
Christians and Moors march<br />
together along the streets of<br />
the newer part of the town<br />
around the Garganes area.<br />
On Saturday September<br />
20th, the Christians parade<br />

Calle Filarmonica to the<br />
Plaza d’esportes at 20.00h.<br />
On Sunday 22nd at<br />
14.00h a loud pyrotechnic<br />
Mascleta takes place in the<br />
Paseo Mediterraneo car<br />
park, followed at 20:00h by<br />
a Solemn Procession in honour<br />
of Stmo. Cristo del Sagrario<br />
and San Blas along<br />
the usual route.<br />
At 00:30, a huge and spectacular,<br />
Grand Firework display,<br />
will light up the skies<br />
above the old town.<br />
On Monday September<br />
22nd it’s the turn of<br />
the Moors to parade separately<br />
through the streets<br />
of Garganes.<br />
Throughout the festivities<br />
a marquee, erected on the<br />
Cami de l’Algar car park,<br />
will provide food, drink and<br />
entertainment provided<br />
by various singers, bands<br />
and orchestras.<br />
This year sees the 40th<br />
anniversary of the Altea<br />
Moros y Cristianos Fiesta,<br />
which has grown signigificantly<br />
since 1979, into one<br />
of the biggest on the Costa<br />
Blanca.<br />
The fiesta features three spectacular parades<br />
