Golf Society
Stableford
competition
TODAY Montgo Golf Society
played a Stableford competition
at Oliva Nova in overcast
conditions and a refreshingly
cool comfortable
temperature. Our sponsor
Tom Atkinson presented a
grand selection of prizes.
Celia Cronin shot a handsome
38 points to claim first
place, followed by Jan Jones,
a stalwart of the society, just
behind with 37 points. Richard
Delaney was third one
point behind with a 36.
Neil Carter returning from
a summer break had nearest
the pin on the 3rd, Gordon
Gleeson claimed the NTP on
the fifth, whilst another returnee,
Brian Redfearn was
within one metre of the 16th
hole to claim that prize.
Two’s today were scored by
Pamela Cook, Celia Cronin
and Dennis Hammond.
So the Montgo ball stock is
yet further depleted!
It was good to play with
our returning members Martin
and Pamela Cook, Sue
Burman and Dennis Hammond,
Neil Carter, and Brian
Redfearn. David Fotheringham
was also spotted in the
crowd. Welcome back you all.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
INTERNATIONAL BREAK 1
JUST as the Alfaz Fantasy
Football League gets going
we are interrupted with an
International Break. Well
at least it’s not the usual
meaningless Friendlies as
they have two Euro Qualifying
games against Bulgaria
and Kosovo.
The break gives us a
chance to reflect on what has
happened so far in Premier
League and the A.F.F.L. We
have over 200 teams taking
part in this season’s Fantasy
as well as having 13 Mini-
Leagues.
The Fantasy League got
off to a bad start with the
Transfer Window closing
before the Premier League
started.
Unfortunately the European
Leagues kept their
Window open ‘til the 1st September
which meant some of
our Managers lost players
to Europe.
In the opening four weeks
of the Premier League we
have seen Liverpool with a
100% record and Manchester
City hanging on to their
coat-tails in second place.
The early front-runners
in the A.F.F.L. are Isobel’s
team, The Bluebells, who
are the present leaders.
Stephen’s Vote for Pedro,
Kapur’s Napali Eleven and
we have two teams in joint
fourth spot, Keith’s Max &
Paddy and Debbie’s Foxy
Filberts. Tony Red’s Miles
Platting Swifts were top for
the first two weeks, but they
have now dropped down
to tenth.
Top Players so far in
this season’s Fantasy are
as follows:
Top Keepers: Wolves
Patricio, Everton’s Pickford
and Crystal Palace’s Guita
all on 12 points, one more
than Manchester City’s Ederson.
Top Defenders are Palace’s
Van Aaholt (19), Everton’s
Digne (15) and Liverpool’s
Van Dijk (14).
Top Midfielders are Liverpool’s
Mo Salah (31), Manchester
City’s Raheem Sterling
(29) and his team-mate
Kevin De Bruyne (26).
Top Strikers are Manchester
City’s hardy annual
marksman Sergio Aguero,
who is the top scorer of the
season so far with a tally of
39 points.
The second highest scorer
is Norwich’s Finnish striker
Pukki with 35 points to his
name. He could be this season’s
hidden gem.
The most selected player
this season in the A.F.F.L.
is, suprisingly, Spurs’ Harry
Kane, with no fewer than
95 Fantasy Managers putting
their faith in this North
London Striker.
The nearest player to him
is Manchester City’s Sergio
Aguero with 80 selections.
(I know who I would rather
have in my line-up).
Most selected Keeper is
Manchester City’s extra
Midfielder Ederson who has
58 followers.
Top Defender is Manchester
United’s new recruit
Harry Maguire who was
backed by 79 Managers. The
inform Raheem Sterling was
the most selected Mid-fielder
with 78, which is more picks
than Liverpool’s Mo Salah,
who only managed 57.
Moving on to our Fantasy
League tables, we have had
three different leaders of our
Mark Carter Ladies Section.
Elaine’s Barbra’s XI, who
finished Runners-Up in this
section last season, was fast
out of the traps in the first
week by being the first team
at the summit.
They were quickly
usurped by Jayne’s team, Up
the Dale, who stayed at the
top for two weeks before losing
out to the present leaders,
Isobel’s The Bluebells
In our Junior League,
young Olly’s Team, Olly 11,
have taken full control in the
early stages with a comfortable
14 point advantage over
Harley’s Ginger Ninjar.
Last years winners of this
section, William & Henry,
had a brief one week spell at
the top but they soon gave
way to one of our new Junior
Managers teams, Frankie’s
More Than a Game, who
also lasted one week in
pole position.
The Golden Boot League,
which is sponsored by Rachel
at the Across the Costasas,
has been very competitive
already with no fewer
than four teams tasting life
at the top. Tony Red’s Miles
Platting Swifts (first week),
Jayne’s Up the Dale (second
week), Macca’s Albir Villains
(third week) and the leaders
now Stephen’s Vote for Pedro
have all been there. Don’t
forget, in this league only
goals scored earn you points.
If a Defender scores he
gets 10 points, a Midfielder
7 points and a forward 5
points. If one of your players
scores an own goal, those
scores become minus. Top
players in this league are
Raheem Sterling (35), Sergio
Aguero (30) and Pukki (25).
Macca’s Albir Villains
have been in charge of our
Champion of Champions
League for three of the four
weeks, but they now have
had to make way for one of
our top Lady Teams, Pauline’s
Vodka Army, who have
a slim five point lead over
the Villains at the top.
Overall the Fantasy
League has got off to a flying
start with 113 goals in
80 Premier League games
(mind you Defenders have
contributed to that tally
with four own goals, one
more than last season).
We have had 124 yellow
cards and five red ones. I
think VAR has a lot to answer
for in those figures.
This time last year nine
players had seen red. I
believe most referees are
frightened of making a mistake
because Big Brother is
watching them!
The full draw for our
K.O. Cup competition is
now up on our website and
will take place the weekend
of September 20th.
Lets hope all our players
come back from the International
Break fully fit and
ready to go again.
