Welcome to 

our October issue 

We’re back after our lovely break and 

very much hoping that you all had a great 

summer. 

Bamford and Norden is such a vibrant 

community and so many of our articles 

represent the wealth of involvement by local 

volunteers in the area over the summer 

months. 

In July Norden Krufts was held at Norden 

Community School. Despite the horrendous 

weather, residents and their dogs came out to 

support the event which was a great success. 

There’s a fabulous double page spread 

on pages 64 and 65 with some wonderful 

photos taken by local photographer Richard 

Smith. 

The team from Moss Row Allotments have 

been very busy over the summer months, 

entertaining visitors at their Open Day as 

well as the Judges from the RHS who came 

to view the allotments as part of Rochdale 

in Bloom 

Even though Summer is coming to an end 

there is still so much to see at Denehurst 

Park and it’s wonderful to see that this 

unused park has become a great place for 

local visitors and residents to enjoy. 

Exciting events to look forward to include the 

Norden Village Christmas Market and Lights 

Switch On organised by Neeva on Thursday 

28th November. There will be the usual array 

of festive stalls including the very popular 

Mince Pie and Mulled Wine stall where you 

will see the usual couple of friendly faces. We 

very much look forward to seeing you there!

Celebrating 60 years 

DENIS HOPE, one of Rochdale’s longest established independent family businesses is proudly celebrating their 60th 

birthday. It all began in 1959 when Denis, who was working at the reputable Edward Taylor’s in Heywood, decided it 

was time to start up on his own. With a vision and a passion for the clothing industry, Denis aimed to provide amazing 

ranges, sourced from throughout Britain and Europe, coupled with unbeatable customer service. 

He opened the doors to a small Drake Street shop in 

September 1959, such was the success that the shop was 

extended into the property next door. Years later other stores 

were opened in Oldham and Bury, and a ladies department 

created within the flagship Drake St store. 

There has always been a family feel to the store, not only 

has the business seen 3 generations of the Hope family 

working in it, but it has also served to 3 generations of 

customers. Many customers fondly recall shopping at 

Denis Hope with their parents. 

When Denis retired the business was handed over to his son 

Michael. New labels were added to the already strong brand mix, the biggest addition being Hugo Boss. Denis Hope 

are now one of the biggest stockists of Hugo Boss outside of Manchester City centre. 

The business continues to go from strength to strength, there is no longer the Oldham and Bury stores but a beautiful 

Men’s and Ladies store in Clitheroe now exists. The ladies department was moved 4 years ago to its current location 

in Norden, and continues to flourish. 

In October last year the flagship store was closed and relocated to Norden due to the decline of Drake St. 

Incorporated in the move to Norden was a rebranding to HOPE Menswear, in keeping with the other HOPE stores. 

Now occupying 794-798 Edenfield Rd is the Menswear store, formal hire department and the existing HOPE 

Womenswear. Despite the changes and rebranding the stores still holds true to the original values and ethos that 

Denis insisted on. Grandson Oliver, now in control of the Norden store, has recreated a welcome atmosphere and 

pressure free shopping environment. 

All the stores have an excellent brand mix that appeal to a wide range of age groups. Well known brands such as 

Hugo Boss, Ted Baker, Oui, Barbour and Part Two are coupled with brands that can not be found on the high street, 

some of which are exclusive to Hope in the North West. 

Oliver and his team are trying to change some preconceived ideas that the store is either too formal or not for their 

age group. ‘New customers frequently tell me that they thought we were just a suit shop, and that they had no idea 

that we do things like Hugo Boss and Replay jeans, tee shirts and polos.’ Said Oliver ‘We have customers shopping 

with us from early 20’s upwards on the mens side and 30+ on the ladies, we really do try and cater for everyone.’ 

If you are yet to visit the store, you’ll love what you find. 

The new location for the Norden stores is proving a great hit, people can now turn the shopping trip in to more of an 

experience, whether its food at Nutters or Catherines, a quick drink in the newly opened Norden Inn (a Hope team 

favourite after work) or a trip to Wildbloods to stock the fridge up with fine meats and deli produce. Norden also 

boasts a Personal Training and health food complex, several 

beauty and hair salons, more retail shops and lies at the 

foot of the stunning Greenbooth reservoirs. With such an 

offering there is no need to venture in to town.

media, and keep up to date on the planned birthday 

celebrations…

KRUFTS 

2019 

Basil the Collie awarded Best In Show 

On Saturday 27th July and in typical British 

style, the rain poured and poured but it 

certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of 

organisers, dogs and their owners who took 

part in Norden’s first ever Krufts. 

All the fabulous volunteers arrived to help, 

including the work experience girls from 

Greenbooth Groom Room and nothing was 

too much trouble for them so a huge thank 

you to all of them! 

The dogs looked amazing and we could see 

efforts had been made by everybody. Going 

through all the competitions was a really 

difficult task especially when it came to 

choosing winners. As result, members of 

the crowd were asked to join the judges and 

help with the decisions and this created a fun 

atmosphere. 

All winners along with 2nd 3rd & 4th places 

were awarded beautiful rosettes donated by 

Angela from Amber Pets and the 1st placed 

winners were entered in to the final. 

Congratulations to Basil, a collie owned by 

Gill Rothwell who won Best in Show 2019 – 

he was awarded a lovely trophy donated by 

the Streetwise team. 

Everyone had a great day and laughed in the 

face of rain, after all we are British and very 

accustomed to it!! 

A big thank you to every business in Norden 

village as well as the shops at Cutgate and 

local pubs who donated prizes and money to 

help make this great show happen. We are all 

so grateful and it’s fabulous to see that the 

community spirit is still alive. 

A huge thanks to Julia Mcclean from 

Greenbooth Groom Room for organising 

this wonderful event and putting the show 

together. Also many thanks to everybody 

in the village for their support of Julia’s new

to book your dog in for a cut and pamper! 

A grand total of £500 was raised, £50 will be 

donated to Norden community school as a 

thank you for the use of the school and the

Third Attempt 

to Build on Green Belt 

at Bamford Hall 

A third application to build a large ‘country House” on a greenfield site within 

the Green Belt at Bamford Hall has been lodged with Rochdale Council. 

The house would be 8 times the size of an average UK house and would 

include parking for six cars. The previous two applications were refused 

Planning Permission. 

he proposed site is an undeveloped eld, part of farmland which served th Century 

Bamford Hall. t that time the Bamford estate was owned by the enton family who were 

ochdale mill owners and bankers. ollowing the failure of the entons bank in , the 

Bamford Hall estate including four farms was auctioned at a liuidation sale. 

here is a pond on the site which was used by the estate workers to water and wash the 

carriage horses. he workers lived in cottages net to the site which have survived to 

this day. he pond and cottages comple is a good eample of how servants working for 

large halls lived and worked. f allowed, a large contemporary building built between the 

pond and historic cottages in this open rural setting would appear incongruous at best. 

he revised ational lanning olicy ramework continues to provide a high 

level of protection to the reen Belt. nappropriate development is, by denition, harmful 

to the reen Belt and should not be approved ecept in very special circumstances 

he applicant concedes this is inappropriate development in the reen Belt but seeks

in the countryside. he cottages are net to the site and there are two large Halls which 

replaced the entons Hall nearby so the site cannot be described as isolated and 

aragraph should not apply.

INGREDIENTS 

50g (2oz) butter 

2 large onions (chopped) 

2 potatoes (chopped) 

2 carrots (chopped) 

3 garlic cloves (crushed) 

Zest and juice of 1 orange 

2 tsps. mild curry powder 

1.8 litres (3 pints) chicken or vegetable stock 

2 x 400g (13oz) cans chopped tomatoes 

or fresh equivalent 

2 dessert apples, peeled and chopped 

1 tbsp dried basil or 3 tbsps. fresh basil 

Salt and pepper 

METHOD 

1. Melt the butter in a large pan, add the 

onions, potatoes, carrots, garlic and 

orange zest, and cook gently, stirring 

from time to time, for about 5 minutes. 

2. Add the curry powder and cook stirring 

constantly for 1-2 minutes. 

3. Add the stock, orange juice, tomatoes, 

apples, basil and salt and pepper to 

taste. 

4. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer 

gently for 30 minutes or until the 

vegetables are tender. 

5. Puree the soup in a blender until smooth. 

6. This recipe can be altered using 

vegetables available. If you use watery 

vegetables reduce the stock accordingly. 

7. You could use just cumin or coriander or 

garam masala instead of 

curry powder. 

8. Serve with crusty bread.

Respect 

M60 Ring of Red 

This year members of the Military 

Vehicle Trust from the West Pennines 

and other neighbouring areas are 

invited to bring their Military Vehicles 

to join the thousands of bikers on the 

RIDE OF RESPECT. 

The RIDE OF RESPECT is an annual event to create a ‘Ring Of Red’ around the M60, 

Manchester, on Remembrance Sunday. The sentiment and organisation of this 

event is commendable, and the organisers have requested our involvement. 

“This year is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the 30th anniversary 

of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it would be great if we could get as many MV’s as 

possible to join the thousands of motorbike riders who pay their respects to the 

men & women of our armed forces both past and present”. 

The idea of the event is to raise money for small charities that help veterans by 

creating the biggest poppy ever attempted. Participants all wear something 

RED or place a RED banner on their vehicle to complete a circle around the 

36-mile M60 route, which if seen from the air would show a massive Ring of Red, 

symbolising the Poppy. Last year there were over 2300 participants! 

All you need to do to join in is meet at the Westbound Birch Services on Sunday 

10th November 2019. Assembly is from 1030 hours and bikers will be departing in 

groups of 200 from 1300 hours. MV’s will be one of the last groups to depart at 

approximately 1330 hours and marshals will be on hand, with help from the 

Highways Agency, to prevent disruption to motorists and help to ensure the 

event passes off without a hitch. 

On the day we can also accommodate people and vehicles wishing to 

participate in the morning Remembrance Commemoration at Rochdale Town 

Hall, which is conveniently placed to access the westbound Birch Services.

Bamford Councillors Update 

Covering Bamford Ward including Marland, Brimrod & Sudden 

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues 

We have been very busy in the ward for the past couple of months; as weeds have 

been shooting up everywhere we have been working with the Council teams to keep 

footpaths and ginnels clear, especially on Woodgate Avenue, around Bamford 

Academy and on Hinton Close. 

We have also been helping residents on Spring Bank Lane and Oulder Hill Drive with 

issues over parking, as well as responding to concerned residents from Kenion Road 

and Oulder Hill regarding speeding. 

This year we have been able to support the Friends of Springfield Park in a £5,000 

funding bid for new play equipment and we have created a new facebook page for 

the group which will help them to share news and pictures of all their activities and 

plans, including new planting and ambitions for a green flag award. Please do 

search for the new facebook page and like & share. 

We will be supporting the Bamford Bolts Netball club again this year following their 

success in gaining promotion and the growth of the club to now include three 

competitive squads. It is a great pleasure to see a local sports club doing so well 

and engaging with young girls from our area. 

Norden Road is looking great with it’s new surface and footpaths, we are really 

pleased with the quality of the work and that officers have been careful to do as 

much work as possible over school holidays, so that there has been minimal impact.

We enjoyed welcoming the Tour of Britain Cycle Race as it passed through the village 

earlier this month. Working together with Council Officers we were able to put 

together some great activities to celebrate this special sporting occasion and it 

seemed to give the village a real lift, with lots of people enjoying the race action.

We will be attending the Community Safety vent on Saturday 19 October at Norden 

Bowling Club from 10am, so please come along as there will be lots going on. 

Residents tell us that they are pleased with the new, bigger bin at the top of 

Caldershaw Road, which has now replaced the small worn one on the lamppost. 

We are moving along with plans to install a new CCT camera in the village. This will 

give etra security to residents and businesses and be monitored via the central 

control centre in Rochdale. This has been a big investment but we know that safety 

and security is one of peoples main concerns, so we are happy to have been able to 

get this valuable addition to the village. We will continue to work with community 

police to ensure that this becomes part of our wider network of initiatives to reduce 

crime and antisocial behaviour. 

It has been good to see that microasphalting work has now taken place along 

denfield Road. This was the final layer to all the resurfacing and after a gritty’ 

couple of weeks we now seem to have a very good surface. 

We have helped to support the installation of a new defibrillator situated on 

Woodhouse Lane; a very worthwhile project which adds to a growing network of these 

lifesaving devices throughout Norden. Let’s hope they never need to be used but it is 

reassuring to know that they are there.

MOSs ROW ALlOTMENTS 

Get Ready to BlOom 

The last few wEeks have bEen busy on the 

ALlotments, entertaining visitors 

Firstly, there was an enjoyable visit by 

Caldershaw Primary Year 3 children who 

stayed with us for just over an hour. There 

were several tenant helpers including some 

new tenants who also enjoyed the afternoon. 

The children were split into three groups and 

allowing fifteen minutes on each activity were 

then moved around. 

The activities included looking at vegetables 

and identifying them growing in the ground, 

pond dipping and identifying heroes and 

villains of the bug life on the allotments. On 

returning to School the children then wrote 

feedback describing what they had enjoyed 

and what they had learnt. This is always 

revealing and helps plan activities for future 

visits. It is not surprising that the pond dipping 

is usually the best liked. 


Our next visitors were 

a liTtle more daunting 

as it was the Judges 

from the RHS 

They were judging the Allotments in the “It’s 

your Neighbourhood Category” and as part of 

the route for Rochdale in Bloom. Several of the 

Tenants were there working, ready to talk to the 

judges even though it was only 9 am. 

The Allotment representatives who accompanied 

the judges around the site felt that they liked 

what they saw and heard, so there is hope and 

we are keeping our fingers crossed that that a 

level 5 will be achieved again this year, after last 

year’s disappointing level 4. 

Next it was the eagerly 

anticipated Open Day 

This was far more successful than last year. 

There weren’t a great many visitors but enough 

to make sure that there were not many cakes left. 

Again, two plot holder bakers did the day proud. 

The cakes were delicious. Plot holders were 

kept busy showing people around and telling the 

history of the site. The date did not clash with the 

Feel Good Festival and the weather was sunny 

and fine in comparison to the previous Saturday. 

All three events were productive and 

enjoyable, and thanks should be given to 

the Plot Holders whose enthusiasm and 

help, made this possible. This is by both 

participating in the events and by making 

sure that the Allotments are maintained 

and look good for Visitors. We were also 

lucky that the good weather was there for 

all three events.

The End of the Hutchinson Reign 

We left our last visit to Greenbooth with 

an insight into school life and activity 

within the village. James Butterworth’s 

daughter Mary Hutchinson had held an 

almost regal position within the village. 

The Hutchinson’s had provided work, 

housing and education for the village 

population and they were pillars of the 

community. They lived at Upper 

Tenterhouse, a very large and grand 

mansion with 26 bedrooms, set in a 

substantial plot of land with a boating lake. 

They hosted many grand parties and lavish 

dinners. Their wealth, although providing 

them with an extremely privileged lifestyle, 

also generously supported the local 

community. 

Mary’s husband Robert Hopwood 

Hutchinson had been born into a family of 

wealthy Blackburn cotton manufacturers. 

Now their eldest son Robert Percy 

Hutchinson joined his father in the 

managing of his Nova Scotia Mill in 

Blackburn whilst the youngest son Arthur 

Lord Hutchinson worked alongside his 

mother at Greenbooth Mill. The sons both 

had very different personalities and Percy 

put the benefit of his privileged education 

at Eton and Harvard to use by developing 

his business acumen. He became interested 

in politics and set up some independent 

business dealings, for a while even living 

in Geneva. Arthur on the other hand was 

content to remain steadfast to the family

usiness in Greenbooth. When Percy took 

himself off to London to pursue ventures 

new, Arthur married Florence and went 

on to have a daughter, Beryl. Both Arthur 

and Florence lent enormous support to the 

people of Greenbooth and Norden, Arthur 

following on from his father as president of 

Norden Cricket Club and was to remain in 

that role for the next 27 years from 1881 

to 1908. 

The mill at Greenbooth had been doing well 

under Arthurs stewardship but now in 1908 

it is up for sale and its closure in many ways 

was to signal the death knell for the village 

of Greenbooth and its inhabitants. It is a few 

years later before the cause of the downfall 

is totally revealed. Back in London, Percy 

had become reacquainted with a man called 

MacKenzie, a previous contact of his, and 

a somewhat dubious character. Despite 

his privileged and extensive education it 

failed to protect him from being led astray 

by MacKenzie, a corrupted forger. Meeting 

up with him again, at a point where he had 

got himself into financial difficulties with 

the Blackburn mill, he became caught up in 

some issue with the passing of fraudulent

They whole heartedly supported not only 

the everyday working life of the village but 

contributed heavily to social functions, often 

hosting event at Tenterhouse and also allowing 

use of Greenbooth school rooms 

as a meeting place for social occasions. 

All this paints a picture of great affluence 

and yet we know that, due to financial 

difficulties, the Mill closed its doors in 

1908, so what was it that brought about 

this fall from grace? A newspaper article of 

1908 discussing the proposed sale, reveals 

that the current wage bill was now around 

£14,000 a year and that the Mill was the 

largest rate payer in the Norden district and 

therefore it was very much hoped that the 

business would continue. Obviously the 

closure of the mill would go on to have 

massive implications for the local population.

obtaining subscriptions and adjusting figures 

on several cheques. This scenario was 

widely publicised and must have brought 

great shame to the family. The Common 

Sergeant in passing sentence, said that while 

he had no doubt that Mackenzie was the 

ringleader of a very extensive scheme 

of forgery, the prisoner’s connection with 

him must have made him aware that the 

man was a criminal of an almost desperate 

character. He was found guilty and 

sentenced to 4 year penal servitude at 

Parkhurst prison on the Isle of White. 

Arthur, had done his best to support Percy 

through his problems but was unable to 

maintain the required funding and needless 

to say the financial impact hit the 

Greenbooth mill heavily. 

Both Arthur and his wife Florence had been 

very active supporters of St Paul’s and 

Bagslate Wesleyan Chapel. Most of the 

social life of the day was centred around 

church and family and the Hutchinson’s 

fully embraced this way of life. Despite 

having enjoyed enormous wealth and 

privilege, Arthur does not appear to be in 

the least ostentatious. In 1911, despite 

having left Greenbooth and now living in 

Maida Vale, Arthur sends a letter and a 

donation to St Pauls for a fund raising that 

was taking place at the time. He makes the 

remark ‘My impaired means prohibit my 

doing what I would like but I have pleasure 

in enclosing you a small donation, and if the 

negotiations I now have on for disposing 

of Greenbooth and thus freeing myself of 

a most serious liability bear fruit I will be 

pleased to materially increase it.’ 

Club function he makes a very telling 

remark. Talking of the club and its players 

he says, ‘I am somewhat rather old 

fashioned and sometimes thought there 

were too many ‘matches’ and too few games’ 

he goes on to say that his preference was 

for friendly games and stressed that they 

had been fortunate in having so many local 

players who had stood by the club instead of 

pursuing their fortunes elsewhere’. 

Somewhat of an analogy of how the 

brothers had led their lives, Arthur 

remaining steadfast whilst Percy needed 

to seek his fortune elsewhere. Percy’s 

wayward lifestyle was to have massive 

implications for Arthur and indeed for 

Greenbooth itself. 

We can only surmise that Percy receiving 

a guilty verdict took its toll on Arthur and 

contributed heavily to his own financial 

downfall. Arthur died only a year after 

Percy’s verdict at the age of 52. A listing in 

the Annals of Rochdale in 1912 under 

‘Published Wills’ records his estate of 

£38,160 gross and £4,511 net, a very clear 

indication of the level of debt and weight of 

the burden he had carried. Percy went on 

to live in Dorset, married his second wife 

Ellen Jane Read in 1925 and died in 1928 

at the age of 75.

From The Archives 

Previous centuries have seen horse 

racing in Rochdale. The first was on 

Hunger Hill, later on Rooley Moor 

and then on Whittaker Moss south 

of Edenfield Road which must have 

been quite an organised occasion as 

a rudimentary grandstand on the site 

collapsed leading to the death of one 

Mary Sharples. 

After this, races were held on Bagslate 

Common where Rochdale Golf Course 

now stands. In the 19th century Bagslate 

was an important junction in the road out 

of Rochdale, being near to a turnpike on 

Edenfield Road for the route to Haslingden. 

Not only were political meetings held at 

Bagslate Moor (there had been a Chartist 

Camp there in the 1830’s), it was common 

to have it as the place for a fair with booths 

and huts rented out around which jugglers, 

tinkers, hawkers, toffee makers, pedlars, 

pickpockets and punters mixed with the 

crowd coming up from town. Part of the 

early fair featured a horse race with a £10 

first and a £5 second prize. 

Soon the site was established as a race 

course in its own right albeit rather old 

fashioned even for those days, with flights 

of hurdles and races taking place over 

three laps of the track. 

Between the 1820’s and the 1850’s races 

were organised by the Rochdale Hunt, 

named by some the ‘Nudger Races’ after 

the leader of the hounds. The race

at the beginning of July with prize money 

of £50 per race and special awards of The 

Manor and The Military Plates. Course 

discipline was initially strict from the 

stewards Edward Ball Esquire and Fred 

Lees Esquire in the 1820’s and from the 

Clerks of the Course Edmund Ogden or 

James Pilling who was also landlord of 

the Woolpack Inn at Marland. For 

example, dogs straying on the course 

would be destroyed immediately and 

gentlemen were advised not to ride on the 

course unless they were club members. 

Carts were allowed on the race course 

grounds but with a charge of 2/6d (12.5p)! 

Visitors had to pay admission to the race 

meeting but once in, there was more than 

just horse racing and betting to while away 

the afternoon. Many of the fair’s legitimate 

booths and entertainments survived but 

alongside them there was cock-fighting, 

bull baits, dog fights, trail hunts and 

drinking and gambling on race days, the 

last public cock-fight being held in July 

1828. Such activities sparked a great many 

objections to the race meetings. Certainly, 

the middle classes of Rochdale seemed 

to dislike these peripheral events. As one 

local paper put it, ‘all rapscallions and 

good for nawts descended on Bagslate.’ 

The Sunday Schools Union had particular 

objections and sent a representative group 

to the race committee to put a stop to it. 

Their meeting took place at the Woolpack 

Inn near to Toad Lane with John Ashworth 

claiming, after much prayer, that moral 

meetings normally lasted three days, often

harm was coming to the townsfolk of 

Rochdale. The race committee promised to 

act to reduce the trouble that accompanied 

the racing. However, the meet went ahead 

although it rained so heavily that year that 

the horses found the going difficult. One 

horse named Bando, thought to have been 

an old post horse for the stage coaches 

that used to change at the Wellington 

Hotel, fell and was so badly injured it was 

shot on the spot, the story going that 

Bando’s skeleton was kept at Faukner’s 

smithy in town. This sad event further 

discredited the race meeting. 

There is some suggestion that the races 

had been discontinued in the mid 1820’s 

but an article in Rochdale’s first newspaper, 

The Recorder, has it that the races were to 

be revived in 1827. Certainly by 1845 there 

was an appetite for racing on Bagslate 

Moor with a first grandstand being built to 

accommodate race-goers although no 

immediate payment was forthcoming to the 

builders. Notwithstanding that, a second 

grandstand was planned, so there must 

have been ambitions for further meetings. 

In fact, a foundation stone was laid for 

the new building and a Yeoman Band 

‘just returned from Forin Parts’ as the 

newspapers had it, played as bottles of 

spirit were ceremoniously broken over 

the stone. 

so once again the races were discontinued, 

the last meeting held in July 1850. Little is 

left of the Bagslate Races but not only can 

a colourful commemoration of them, ‘Hark 

to Nudger,’ be seen in Touchstones 

museum on the Esplanade but the Turf 

Tavern on Edenfield Road reminds 

passers-by to this day that Rochdale had 

once been a home to the so-called sport 

of kings.

Through the 1840’s however, racing at 

Bagslate became more sporadic. Falling 

gate receipts meant smaller prize money 

and the field and the buildings where the 

races took place fell into disrepair. In 1850 

the builder of the first grandstand James 

Pilling (who had also been Clerk of the 

Course) secured payment at last, but this 

had the effect of bankrupting the race club

trolls by the new ’Monet’ bridges 

have continued to keep Denehurst 

Park as their home, nestled between 

the rocks and plants.

The new inclusive play area has been 

very well received since its grand 

opening in April and has become a 

much loved feature in the park and is 

rarely empty. Complete with swings, 

slides, a roundabout and a large 

pirate ship, the adventure themed 

play area still does not fail to impress 

adults and children alike. 

The two community orchards, now 

in their third year, are becoming well 

established and producing a wide 

variety of heritage apples and pears 

such as Ashmead’s Kernel, Keswick 

Codlin and Black Worcester; located 

at the top of the park among the 

wildflowers, the orchards provide the 

perfect setting for scrumping.

Treacle tart with orange 

and pecan salad 

Autumn is well and truly upon us the clocks have gone 

back, the nights are drawing in and the leaves are 

falling from the trees. What better way to cheer you up 

than this recipe for treacle tart, its comfort food at its 

best, hot, sticky, gooey, perfect with vanilla custard, a 

dollop of mascarpone or quite simply with a ball of ice 

cream. If you can’t get the dry breadcrumbs, use fresh 

but add more syrup otherwise it gets a bit gloopy. 

The tarts can be made in advance and left in the fridge, 

warm them through for about 3-4 minutes at 180˚c 

to get them hot again. 

INGREDIENTS 

PASTRY 

110g butter 

50g caster sugar 

1 egg yolk 

175g plain flour – sifted 

Pinch salt 

FILLING 

250g golden syrup 

Zest and juice 1 lemon 

250g dry white breadcrumbs 

1 egg 

Few drops vanilla essence 

ORANGE SALAD 

2 oranges 

50g sliced pecan nuts 

Juice ½ lemon 

50g sugar 

Chocolate transfer decoration 

(optional) 

Vanilla ice cream 

METHOD 

1. Cream the butter and sugar together, add the egg, beat 

well, then add the flour, salt and vanilla. Bring together 

then cover in food wrap and leave in a fridge for 20 minutes 

before using. Line 6 10cm in diameter tart tins with the 

pastry and bake at 180˚c for 8 minutes until a light 

golden colour. 

2. Warm the golden syrup so it becomes easier to stir and mix 

in the lemon zest and juice, the breadcrumbs, egg 

and vanilla essence. 

3. Pour into the baked pastry cases and bake in a hot oven 

180˚c for 8-10 minutes until a light golden, leave to cool. 

4. For the orange salad segment the oranges, place the orange 

juices, lime juice and sugar into a small pan and bring to the 

boil to form a light syrup. Leave to 

cool then pour over the segments 

and add the pecans. 

5. When ready to serve either re-warm 

the tart briefly or serve at room 

temperature with the orange salad, 

chocolate decoration, ice cream and 

a dusting of icing sugar.

Viridor Credits funding roof repairs to Bircle Church 

St John the Baptist, Bircle Church have been extremely fortunate in securing financial assistance from 

Viridor Credits to help towards funding much needed repairs to the roof of the building. 

The church stands high above the town and from the churchyard there are panoramic views over the 

surrounding towns of Bury, Heywood, Rochdale and the Pennines. However, because of its location the 

church is exposed to the worst of the weather and over the years this has taken its toll on the building. 

Carol Collins, Church Warden says “We are extremely grateful to Viridor Credits in helping us to keep our 

church building in good repair – the church was built over 170 years ago and is Grade II listed. We are so 

pleased that Viridor Credits appreciated the importance of the building to the community and is helping us 

to preserve the beauty, calm and peace which the church offers for years to come” 

Lesley Gough, Church Warden added that although work is to begin on the repair this week all church 

services and activities will continue as planned. In recent years the church has become a thriving 

community hub and is used much more than for Sunday morning services. Monday mornings are Welcome 

Space, Stay and Play for carers and tots and coffee morning for anyone who cares to call – there is no 

cost whatsoever and all are welcome to pop in for refreshments and a chat. Monday afternoon the Art 

and Craft group meet and sessions are to continue beginning of September. The church will be open to all 

on 20th and 21st September during the Heritage Open Days weekend and again this is a “free” event. 

On Thursday evening 3rd October the very popular “Valley Aloud Community choir will be 

performing to help the church raise much needed funds.
