Third Attempt
to Build on Green Belt
at Bamford Hall
A third application to build a large ‘country House” on a greenfield site within
the Green Belt at Bamford Hall has been lodged with Rochdale Council.
The house would be 8 times the size of an average UK house and would
include parking for six cars. The previous two applications were refused
Planning Permission.
he proposed site is an undeveloped eld, part of farmland which served th Century
Bamford Hall. t that time the Bamford estate was owned by the enton family who were
ochdale mill owners and bankers. ollowing the failure of the entons bank in , the
Bamford Hall estate including four farms was auctioned at a liuidation sale.
here is a pond on the site which was used by the estate workers to water and wash the
carriage horses. he workers lived in cottages net to the site which have survived to
this day. he pond and cottages comple is a good eample of how servants working for
large halls lived and worked. f allowed, a large contemporary building built between the
pond and historic cottages in this open rural setting would appear incongruous at best.
he revised ational lanning olicy ramework continues to provide a high
level of protection to the reen Belt. nappropriate development is, by denition, harmful
to the reen Belt and should not be approved ecept in very special circumstances
he applicant concedes this is inappropriate development in the reen Belt but seeks
to gain lanning ermission under aragraph which relates to isolated homes
in the countryside. he cottages are net to the site and there are two large Halls which
replaced the entons Hall nearby so the site cannot be described as isolated and
aragraph should not apply.
