This month’s focus ... hyperpigmentation 

One of the leading concerns among clients today is

Books for mums ... and a happy-ever-after 

After an air raid in London, an injured woman is found wandering around. She

A celebration to 

remember 

Giving recognition where it is due is oh-so important; and Caxton, the 

publishers of Get It Pretoria magazine and the Rekord newspapers, are 

definitely not afraid to give credit where it is due. For the annual 

Caxton Excellence Awards, personnel from across the company 

recently got together at the lavish The Maslow Hotel at the Time 

Square Casino opposite Menlyn Maine to celebrate a year of hard work. 

Awards were given for outstanding design skills, photography, writing, 

advertising campaigns, years of dedicated service and more. The theme 

of the evening was Renaissance and Caxtonites dressed to impress. 

The food, expertly prepared by The Maslow Hotel’s executive sous 

chef, Jaco Truter, was out of this world and the entertainment ensured 

that the party lasted all night. And did we mention there was a silent 

disco to end the evening with? It was epic! A big congratulations to all 

the winners. You deserve all the recognition that comes your way. We 

definitely cannot wait for next year’s awards ceremony.

She’s a mom, wife, businesswoman, singer and actress. Pretoria East’s Melissa Swart dishes 

on how she manages to raise babies and build a career.

Melissa Swart has a smile that 

can light up a room, a career 

that will leave many green 

with envy, a doting husband 

and is mom of two kiddos under the age 

of five. Jip, that’s quite a mouthful. 

And then she still finds time to help 

other moms deal with the challenges of 

parenthood. 

Melissa, hubby Tertius and two kids, 

Xavier (3) and Xerésh (4) reside in Pretoria 

East and the busy mom says her kids 

completely changed her life. 

“I always thought that I knew what 

unconditional love (with my husband) 

was, but my two little ones came to show 

me the true definition and concept of true 

love,” Melissa explains. 

And it was her kids that made her start 

her blog #THEHONESTTOMOMTRUTH. 

“Staying home alone with first Xerésh 

and then her and Xavi made me go 

through one heck of an identity crisis. 

“Before the kids, I was always very sure 

of who I was as a successful singer, actress 

and writer and suddenly I was just a 

mom. Everything I used to work on was 

suddenly just gone. 

“The more I got to talk to other moms, 

however, I came to realise that I was not 

alone. I just could not understand why no 

one ever speak about it, so I decided to do 

so,” Melissa says. 

The name comes from the saying: “It 

is the honest to God truth” and Melissa 

says she chose it specifically, because 

she wants moms to be able to share their 

truths. 

“I write about my own experiences as 

well as what I see other moms go though 

and experience around me,” she adds. 

She recently teamed up with the wellknown 

baby product range Epimax and 

launched her own web-series 1,2,3 with 

Living and Loving magazine. 

“I talk about topics many moms debate 

or have questions about. You would think 

that being a mom is hard enough, but 

I never imagined moms would criticise 

and break each other down this much. 

“Being a mom is all about the daily 

discovery of my heart’s capabilities. It is 

a chance to raise two people who know 

their worth and therefore can make a 

change in the world,” she says. 

“The feedback on the blog has been 

fantastic, with many parents telling me 

they feel less alone.” 

Apart from being a blogger and 

full-time mom, she is also part of the 

female singing group Dinamiese 

Dames alongside Nadia Beukes, Marisa 

Drummond and Edrien Erasmus. The 

ladies met while sharing a dressing room 

while working on a musical. 

“We became friends and since we 

all have a passion for women and the 

different phases in life, we decided to start 

a cabaret group,” Melissa explains. 

The talented Pretorian is also the sister 

of former Miss South Africa Melinda Bam 

and the daughter of well-known gospel 

singer Wanda Bam. 

“I have so much love for Melin’ and my 

mom and I am so proud of them. But it is 

sometimes tough to fight for your own 

identity when people keep pushing you 

under someone else’s title,” she says. 

Melissa also has a passion for hair, makeup 

and styling and says it mostly comes 

with being part of the entertainment 

industry. 

“When I gave up my musical theatre 

career to be with the kids, it was also 

something I could do from home, and my 

business just boomed,” she says. 

So how does she manage it all? 

“Lists ... It is all that works. Start at the top 

and work your way through,” she laughs. 

The most difficult part of being a mom? 

Patience. But her mom taught her to have 

grace with yourself and your own growth 

process. 

“Many days life is like a circus, but it is 

a beautiful, colourful circus and I cannot 

wait to see what tomorrow has in-store,” 

Melissa says.

THE TIME IS 

NOW! 

For years, mum of two, Magna Lomas, has put her family first. She was the rock behind 

hubby’s business, momager to her singer son and the glue that held her household and 

family together. Now, at the age of 48, it is finally her time to shine. 

Magna Lomas (48) from 

Southdown’s story is one to 

which many mothers can relate. 

From the minute her first little 

bundle of joy was born, her entire life 

started to revolve around her family. 

That inevitably led to many of her hopes, 

dreams and passions to take a backseat to 

the needs of her family. With her last born 

out of school, Magna finally has some time 

to spare – time for her art. 

She credits her creativity and love of the 

finer things in life to her mother, who had 

a room filled with all the kinds of art and 

craft necessities of which you can dream. 

“My mother always motivated me and 

gave me the opportunity to flourish in my 

art,” Magna says. 

After completing her schooling, she 

enrolled as an art student at the Tshwane 

University if Technology (then Technicon 

Pretoria) but, because of circumstances, 

only completed her first year of studies. 

She met her husband, Wayne Lomas, 

in art class in Grade 10 and the couple 

is celebrating their 26th wedding 

anniversary this year. They have two sons, 

Georic (21) and Johndré (18). 

The love of the arts seems to run though 

all members of this family’s veins. 

Wayne owns his own shopfitting 

business, Georic is a singer with a passion 

for design and little brother Johndré is 

following in his dad’s footsteps, working at 

the family business. 

Taking care of a house full of men is no 

easy task, but with both sons all grown 

up, Magna decided that it was time to do 

something for herself. 

“Over the past nine years, we as a family 

went through lots of trying times, mostly 

due to health problems. As of this year, 

however, everyone is doing well and 

I decided that it is time for me to find 

myself again and live out my passion,” she 

says. 

One look at her paintings will have you 

convinced of Magna’s talent. It is one of a 

kind, eye-catching and really speaks to the 

viewer. 

“I get inspiration from different emotions 

I experience, things that happen and 

the hidden inner strength and beauty of 

women,” she explains. 

She spends about 20 hours per week 

painting, but says the creation process is 

running through her mind 24 hours a day. 

“I do not like to work on a painting for 

longer than a week. I tend to lose interest,” 

she says. 

When she is painting, she uses acrylic 

paint as base layers and oil paint for the 

finer detail on top. For her latest painting, 

she even mixed it up a bit and used oil 

pastels and charcoal along with the acrylic 

and oil paint. 

One of our favourite paintings is of a 

woman posing with an awkward, forced 

smile. 

Magna entered the piece into an 

international art competition called 

Delusional Art in 2018 and says it tells the 

story of a young girl who hides her trauma 

and pain behind a forced smile. 

“Her inner conflict, anxiety, sadness, 

struggle, confusion and disillusionment 

are all illustrated with her eyes are an 

indication of what is going on in her mind 

and soul. The light and darkness indicates 

the happiness and sadness in her life,” she 

adds. 

“My pieces are all simple yet timeless. 

Colour and detail are very important to 

me and the brush strokes are all worked in 

with a dry brush to help create a smoother 

effect. 

“My latest pieces are very transparent, 

soft and mysterious,” she says. 

Some of her favourite local artists include 

Lionel Smit, Mat Louwrens, Michael Heyns 

and Marina Louw. The last artwork she 

bought is by Mat Louwrens, depicting 

children running through a field of flowers. 

An advice for other mums trying to find 

themselves again after the kids have left 

the nest or just struggling to keep their 

head above water amidst daily chores and 

responsibilities? 

“Keep the faith and be patient with 

yourself; it will get better. Your time will 

come. If you do want to take on a project, 

keep it small. Rather tackle something 

smaller just for the fun of it, as bigger 

projects tend to lead to frustration. 

“Never stop dreaming and remember to 

keep your passion alive – even if it is only 

in your head. 

“And lastly, never let your fear of 

disappointment keep you from doing 

something – just go for it.” 

When she is not busy running the 

household, spending time with family 

or painting, she likes to scroll through 

Pinterest looking for inspiration and new 

ideas.

For many it is a string of pearls or a 

gorgeous Christening gown, but where

the radio and we immediately fell in love 

with the name and decided Everli was the 

perfect fit – Everli is our ‘foreverli’ brand 

name,” Nina explains the name.

cotton and bamboo, making items 

long-lasting and eco-friendly. Bamboo’s

Starting up their own business was 

anything but easy.

reality, and then realising that there is no 

turning back. It is a leap of faith, but also 

the most rewarding part. In the fashion 

industry, it is always quite challenging 

creating the next season’s collection six 

months in advance – you are ‘dying of 

heat’ while dreaming up winter designs,” 

the sisters say. 

Working with family, we can imagine is 

quite hard. So what is their secret? 

“We are not only family, but best friends. 

We have different personalities and 

strengths which we capitalise on and 

have different roles and responsibilities 

within our business. It is important to 

switch off some days and spend quality 

sister bonding time and not talk about 

business,” the duo explains. 

And the two really are two peas in 

a pod. Both studied BCom Marketing 

Management at the University of Pretoria 

and spent time abroad after varsity. 

At Everli Baby, Nina is the mastermind 

behind the business and handle all dayto-day 

business activities, while Sally is the 

more creative and analytical brain.

BOOTCAMP 

THAT BOOTY 

We know it’s cold outside and exercise might not be your top priority. Get in shape, or just 

get started with a bootcamp session (or two). Here’s what you need to know. 

Lelani Loots, owner of LaniFit 

Bootcamp, has always been 

passionate about fitness. She is a 

qualified personal trainer with a fulltime 

schedule. 

“My classes were fully booked and there 

were only so many people I could help, so 

I decided to start my own bootcamp to 

offer training in bigger numbers. 

“LaniFit Bootcamp was born and today 

I have between 250 and 300 ladies 

attending classes at three different 

venues in Centurion,” Lelani says. 

Of course we wanted to find out more 

about this fitness craze and Lelani was 

eager to share. 

Why is bootcamping such an effective 

form of exercise? 

“Bootcamp targets different areas in 

the body and activities involve various 

cardiovascular, strength-building and 

mobility-enhancing exercise routines 

designed to target each and every muscle 

group,” Lelani explains. 

She uses different equipment like 

kettlebells, slamballs, boxing, bands 

and weight training to help achieve the 

optimal workout. 

And then there is, of course, the fact 

that you get to exercise outdoors. 

“It is energising and gives you a chance 

to breathe in fresh air while you work. It 

can also be the change of scenery your 

brain needs to rewire after a long day at 

work,” she adds. 

On a scale from 1 to 10, how hectic is 

bootcamp classes compared to Pilates, 

gym, etc? 

“My bootcamp is for all fitness levels as 

you just do what you can and keep up 

with your own fitness levels. Every session 


we do will be something different and as 

you get stronger and fitter, you can do 

more and more every week,” Lelani says. 

“On a scale of one to 10, I would say it 

is a strong seven – but only because I am 

the trainer. 

“I like to motivate clients and push them 

to their limits compared to a gym where 

you gym by yourself and might not give 

it your all.” 

How long are the classes? 

“Classes are an hour long, including warm 

up. All in all, you will get a good workout 

and cool down.” 

How many classes per week are 

needed to see a difference? 

Lelani recommends attending bootcamp 

classes at least twice per week. 

It might also be a good idea to 

supplement your weekend exercise 

regime with a weekend park run or 

‘active’ activity with the family. 

How many different exercises does one 

do at a bootcamp class? 

Every session is different. Some days 

classes consist of a 20-minute boxing 

session, paired with a 15-minute ABS 

workout with some cardio in between. 

“Other sessions are focused on legs, 

thighs and the bum area,” Lelani says. 

“I also love to do full-body Tabata 

workouts (20sec work, 10sec rest), where 

I will let the campers train arms, legs, 

butt, ABS, back and fitness all in one class. 

What are some of the most basic 

bootcamp exercises people can look 

forward to? 

Lelani likes to do stations with lunges, 

squats, kettlebell swings, wall balls, 

crunches and mountain climber 

movements. She also offers boxing. 

Who would you say would benefit 

most from bootcamp? 

“Everyone! Bootcamp is the perfect form 

of exercise for someone who wants to 

lose weight, tone, get stronger (some 

campers train for the Comrades and just 

want to improve leg and arm strength), 

get fit, improve their well-being or just 

want to spend some time outdoors while 

getting a workout.” 

How important is it to follow a good 

diet along with exercise? 

“Like the experts say, a healthy lifestyle 

consists of 80% diet and 20% training – 

yup, that’s true! But even if you just start 

with bootcamp to help you get fitter, 

stronger and more motivated, you will 

slowly start to change your eating habits 

as well,” Lelani says. 

How much does it cost to attend a 

class? 

Midstream classes: 

Monthly fee: R350 – three classes 

per week. Classes are on Mondays, 

Wednesday and Fridays between 8am 

and 9am or Mondays and Wednesdays 

between 5pm and 6pm. 

Doxa Deo Raslouw and Rooihuiskraal venue 

Monthly fee: R300 – two classes per week. 

Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays 

between 8am and 9am, 4:30pm and 

5:30pm and 5:30pm and 6:30pm.

The 33-year-old exercises five 

days a week, starting on a 

Sunday, and say Tuesdays are 

her rest days. In 2016, she was 

chosen as The Face of Garmin 

Fitness. 

“They were looking for an 

ambassador who needs to live 

the brand. My first thoughts 

were “this is me!” so I decided to 

enter. After the interview round, 

I was named the 2016 Face of 

Garmin Fitness,” she beams. 

So how does she stay in such 

good shape? 

“Firstly, I do not diet. I make 

healthy eating a part of my 

everyday lifestyle. While 

I recommend sticking to an 

80/20 nutrition plan, ultimately 

the key to staying fit and eating 

healthy is learning to listen to 

your body. 

“Secondly, I really enjoy 

exercise. If you are one of 

those people who absolutely 

dread every minute of your 

approaching treadmill workout 

and hate it even more once 

you are there, it is time to find a 

different approach to exercise,” 

Lelani says. 

Her typical day will make you 

blush. 

4am: Rise and shine with a cup 

of coffee. Lelani likes to take 

her two fur-kids out for a walk 

to enjoy fresh air and see the 

sunrise. 

5am: Back-to-back personal 

training sessions until 7am. 

8am: Ladies outdoor bootcamp 

class at Midstream Estate. 

9am: Head to gym with a friend 

for an hour HIIT (high-intensity 

training session) session. 

12pm: Lunch time. 

12:30pm: Power nap followed 

by a blend of power smoothie to 

boost her recovery. 

5pm: Afternoon outdoor 

bootcamp session. 

6:30pm: Crossfit training 

session with her husband. 

8pm: Dinner. 

When Lelani is not working, 

she loves to spend time with her 

husband and their two dogs. She 

also likes going to food markets 

or travelling the globe.

Just remember – no mums allowed in the kitchen for any of these recipes! 

MARSHMALLOW PUDDING 

Serves 8 

INGREDIENTS 

• 1 can of pineapple slices, drained 

(400g) 

• 1 packet of marshmallows, cut into 

pieces (150g) 

• 20 red and green glazed cherries, 

diced 

• 50g walnuts, crushed 

• 1 tin of cream (250ml) 

• 1 can condensed milk (397g) 

METHOD 

1. Cut the pineapple into smaller 

pieces and add to a mixing bowl. 

Add in the marshmallow pieces, 

diced cherries and crushed walnuts. 

2. Whisk the cream at high speed for 

at least two minutes or until it 

becomes pointy when removing 

the whisk. 

3. Add the whipped cream to the 

other ingredients and mix well. 

Add the condensed milk. Stir until 

properly mixed. 

4. Dish the mixture into a pie dish 

and let sit in the fridge for about 

three hours. Garnish with mint 

leaves and berries. 

SHAKY PIZZA 

Serves 4 

The pizza dough is fun and quick 

to make. The recipe is taken and 

adapted from Wenresepte by 

Carmen Niehaus. Preparing the 

ingredients for the topping will take 

the longest. 

INGREDIENTS 

Crust 

• 500ml flour 

• 10ml baking powder 

• 10ml light brown sugar 

• A pinch of salt 

• 150ml warm water 

• 125ml sunflower oil 

Topping 

• 90-120ml tomato pasta sauce or 

pizza sauce (± ¼ of 410g can) 

• 150g grated Cheddar cheese (375ml) 

• 240g grated mozzarella cheese (500ml) 

• 4-6 mushrooms, thinly sliced 

• ½ greenpepper, thinly sliced 

• 16-20 slices of salami 

PASTA-ALA-LEKKER 

Serves 6 

INGREDIENTS 

• 1 packet of macaroni (500g) 

• 1 packet bacon (250g), diced 

• 2 medium sized onions, chopped 

• 3 garlic cloves, crushed 

• 1 green pepper, pitted and diced 

• 250g mushrooms, sliced 

• 2 cans of tomato and onion mix 

(410g) 

• 30ml tomato sauce 

• 30ml chutney 

• 100g grated Cheddar cheese 

METHOD 

1. Set the oven to 180˚C and grease 

the oven pan. 

2. Cook the macaroni and fry the 

bacon in a pan. 

3. Fry the onion, garlic and peppers in 

a pan. Add the mushrooms and fry 

for another three minutes. Add the 

tomato and onion mix and chutney 

and stir. 

4. Drain the pasta and throw it 

back into the pot. Stir the sauce 

in and dish everything into the 

oven pan. Bake until the cheese 

melts. 

METHOD 

1. Set the oven to 200˚C and grease the 

baking tray or pizza pan. 

2. Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar 

and salt together in a sealable mixing 

bowl. A 2-litre ice cream tub works 

well. Add the water and oil and close 

the lid tightly. The bowl/tub has to 

seal properly otherwise the warm 

mixture will spill when shaken. 

3. Shake the bowl/tub until it feels as if 

the dough start to roll around inside. 

Remove the lid and make sure the 

flour is mixed in properly. Continue 

shaking needed. 

4. Press the dough into the baking tray 

or pizza pan. 

5. Spread the tomato pasta sauce 

or pizza sauce over the base and 

sprinkle half of the cheese on top. 

Place the mushrooms, pepper and 

salami on top. 

6. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over 

the top and bake the pizza for 20 

to 25 minutes until the cheese are 

melted and the crust turned brown. 

SHERRY LAMB CHOPS 

Serves 6 

INGREDIENTS 

• 1 onion, chopped finely 

• 100ml sherry 

• 75ml olive oil 

• 25ml balsamic vinegar 

• 15ml freshly chopped rosemary 

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed 

• 10ml light brown sugar 

• Salt and freshly grounded black 

pepper 

• 6 lamb chops 

METHOD 

1. Mix all the ingredients except the 

chops together. Place the chops in 

a layer in a glass dish and dish the 

marinade on top. Turn the chops 

over until fully marinated. 

2. Cover the dish with a lid or cling 

film and let sit in the fridge for at 

least eight hours. Turn the meat a 

few times. 

3. Braai the chops over medium 

heat for about five minutes on 

each side or until well done – your 

choice. 

Note: The marinade also works well

This May we’re honouring the matriarch ... and we visit the 

extraordinary Tintswalo Safari Lodge, where ellie is queen 

We sat for an hour or so in an 

open vehicle late one afternoon, 

quietly watching a herd of about 

40 elephants – from a graceful 

matriarch who kept a watchful eye 

on us to a youngster just a few 

months old – swimming, rolling 

and cooling down in the dam. 

Quite probably the most peaceful, 

relaxing hour of the year so far. 

It was not the first elephant 

sighting of the trip. 

There was a trio standing under 

the jackal-berry tree which shades 

the deck of Tintswalo Safari 

Lodge ... taking turns to drink from 

a hosepipe that is hooked up in the 

branches. 

Then there was the young bull we 

encountered on an early morning 

drive, which trumpeted and did a 

little mock charge, showing off his 

muscles by breaking branches off a 

small tree ... determined to show us 

who is boss. Such a teenager! 

The elephants were definitely 

the highlight of our trip to this 

magnificent lodge in the Manyeleti 

Game Reserve, which is surrounded 

by the unfenced borders of the 

Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands 

and Timbavati. 

The lodge prides itself on offering 

guests an authentic African safari 

experience. And by golly, does it 

deliver! 

The game viewing is exceptional. 

A leopard mum lazed in a tree 

while her cub played in the dry 

river bed below. A rather smooth 

young cheetah showed off, posing 

for a good 10 minutes on a fallen 

log ... model-like in his turns to 

ensure everyone got a great shot. 

The hyenas were less friendly 

... darting across the road after 

sundown and disappearing quickly 

into thick bush. We saw – and not 

just briefly – lions and rhino and 

giraffes and a host of antelope and 

so much more. 

Rangers and trackers – most of 

the latter from the native Shangaan 

communities – are passionate and 

skilled, so it is doubtful you will 

leave without seeing at least a few

ranger and tracker duo Eric and 

Foster, who could well star as a 

comedy duo in a show if they ever 

give up their day jobs. 

As exciting as rounding a corner 

to encounter a rhino may be, is 

rounding one and coming across

for a pre-dinner treat. 

The next morning, the same area 

is transformed into an outdoor 

breakfast venue ... mimosas 

and eggs with a soundtrack of 

birdsong.

or in the dry river bed in front of 

the lodge; and trust us, it is a dinner 

that is sensational.

Suites. All have private plunge 

pools and wooden decks, woodburning 

fireplaces and baths with a 

view! So romantic. 

With just six suites, the lodge is 

never overcrowded ... and if you 

are looking fo total privacy for you

Manor House – an exclusive-use 

villa with five en-suite bedrooms, 

its own chef, butler and game 

vehicle.

An African savannah elephant is killed, 

on average, every 15 to 20 minutes. 

Let that sink in a little. These gentle, 

magnificent creatures are a species 

in crisis. The authors of The Last 

Elephants, Don Pinnock and Colin Bell,

... that at CITES 2019, elephants will 

be upgraded to Appendix I (banning 

trade of elephants or their parts across 

international borders) and secondly 

that those countries that receive and 

use legal and poached ivory (mainly

elephants and the dangers they face

Fête de la Musique, also known as Make Music Day or 

World Music Day, is a music festival which started in
