When new mother of twins Lauren is

Wish list 

Here’s to a marvellous July 

Sticky wings recipe 

When having friends or family over, you can’t 

go wrong with presenting a platter full of wings 

alongside a mouth-watering blue cheese dip! 

The only way to get the chicken wings really 

glossy and sticky is to re-glaze them a few times 

while cooking. Keep on going (about 3-4 times) 

until you get the desired result, then serve 

hot or at room temperature with this zippy 

Southern-style blue cheese dip and a glass of 

Spier Signature Chenin Blanc. 

For the hot sticky marinade: 

(SERVES 4) 

1/4 cup (60ml) tomato sauce (ketchup) 

• 3/4 cup (180ml) smoky BBQ sauce • 15-30ml 

(1-2 tablespoons) Sriracha sauce (or hot chilli 

sauce) • 15ml (1 tablespoon) Worcestershire 

sauce • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 

(muscovado or demerara) • 5ml (1 teaspoon) 

smoked paprika • 1/2 teaspoon salt • About 16 

chicken wings, for covering in the marinade 

For the dip: 

100g blue cheese, crumbled • 1 cup thick sour 

cream or crème fraiche • 1/4 cup mayonnaise 

• 1-2 tablespoons milk • 2 teaspoons lemon juice 

(or apple cider vinegar) •Salt and pepper to taste 

Method: 

Make the sticky marinade: In a medium size 

mixing bowl, add all the ingredients for the 

marinade (except the chicken) and mix together. 

Pour over the chicken wings in a sealable 

container and marinate for 30 to 60 minutes (or 

longer – overnight). 

Preheat the oven to 200 C. Line a roasting tray 

with foil, then arrange the marinated wings in a 

single layer. Roast for 30 minutes, then remove 

from the oven and use a pastry brush to brush 

with more marinade. Return to the oven, and 

keep on brushing every 10 minutes until the 

wings are very tender and the edges are dark, 

glossy and sticky. Remove from the oven and 

serve hot or at room temperature. 

Make the dip while the chicken is roasting. Mix 

all the ingredients in a food processor and until 

smooth and thick (thin it with a little milk if its 

too thick). Keep any leftovers refrigerated in a 

covered glass jar.

It’s time you got to know Peniel Morebodi Makena. Why? This local rising star is 

setting off to Orlando and she may soon grace our screens if 

chosen for an international television production.

Peniel Morebodi 

Makena’s acting career 

has already kicked off 

and she is geared to make South 

Africa proud. Currently seen on 

the web series, The Myth, Peniel 

loves being on stage. Her big break 

came when she was selected by 

international casting director Kim 

Myers and Tyler Perry’s independent 

casting director, Rhavynn Drummers 

at a Joburg audition. Soon she’ll be 

packing her bags to go to Orlando, 

Florida to audition in front of leading 

casting directors, fashion houses 

and producers in parts of America, 

Europe and Asia. “It is a dream 

come true.” 

Other career highlights 

“I was introduced to modelling at 

the age of eight. My cousin Mpule 

Kwelagobe was taking part in a 

fashion show at a little restaurant 

called Taj in Botswana and asked me 

to go along with her. 

The owners asked me if I would like 

to be part of the show and I thought, 

gee, this is it, this is what I want to do! 

Acting on the other hand was not 

something I had considered still 

being so young and it was actually 

my husband, Mokgoshi Makena 

who said that I should give it go. I 

joined Just You Model and Artist 

Management and they have given 

me opportunities I could never have 

dreamt of. 

They have contributed to my success 

as an artist and I could not have done 

it without them. I give everything 

I do my all, and I think that’s what 

makes me stand out. 

Home is where the heart is 

Growing up with a family who shared 

her passion shaped her future. 

“I was raised in Maunatlala- a village in 

Central District of Botswana. 

I am the second born of Cecilia and 

Moshe Morebodi and have two 

brothers (Shalom and Raah) and a sister 

(Eliel). After school I went on to study 

psychology. 

I have mastered skills to be patient, listen 

to understand and communicate in a 

way that makes people feel comfortable. 

Being a psychologist has contributed to 

my success as an actress and model but 

underneath all of this, in my heart I’d like 

to think I can make a difference to the 

youth at home in Botswana.

Hobbies…I love reading, cooking and baking.

centre of my outfits.

although they’re welcome to enter the 10km 

race if preferred. They must be available to attend

The beautiful family kitchen sold them straightaway, and it’s the heart of their home. 

Family living 

We take a peep inside a Meyersdal family home. 

Many hours of fun and good times have been enjoyed in the bar area. 

This family home in a gated estate in Meyersdal 

can best be described as homely 

but with a definite entertaining edge to it. 

When we chatted with the owners, who 

have two young children, they admitted 

as much as they enjoy quiet family times 

together, they also love entertaining 

family and friends. 

They moved into their five bedroom home 

nine years ago and immediately fell in love 

with it when they caught a glimpse 

of the double volume kitchen and knew 

this would be the heart of their home. 

“We enjoy cooking and there’s nothing 

better than good food shared with those 

we love.” 

The rest of the house was a clean canvas 

so they could make it their own. Cladding 

was added to modernise the open 

fireplace, which will be well used over the 

next few colder months and they turned a

cosy corner into a family library. “We all are 

avid readers.” 

As you enter their home, the entrance area 

is warm and welcoming and this leads you 

into one of the two lounges, decorated in 

cream and red. “When we entertain we do 

sit here and relax but the bar area often 

wins us over, as it has a patio just off and 

this overlooks the garden.” 

The lower lounge, where the family watch 

TV when time allows, is the cosiest of the 

two. “We specifically wanted both lounges 

to be child friendly though so when 

we chose the couches they had be 

super comfy.” 

Dining in during the week the family eat 

around the central island in the beautifully 

designed kitchen and for more formal dinners 

the dining room is used. 

“We are an extremely busy family so one 

thing we didn’t want was a huge garden. 

The small lawn, garden beds and splash 

pool are absolutely perfect for us and 

with the patio and bar, entertaining is 

made easy.” 

A collection of special décor items are the focal part of the entrance area. 

Comfy and stylish makes this lounge the perfect place to watch TV.

Nontsi 

Her interest in cooking stems from enjoying and adoring good food. We spoke to the 

talented young Nontsi Jiyane who recently won in the fifth season of 

Come Dine With Me South Africa

Nontsikelelo (Nontsi) Jiyane, a resident 

of Suideroord was recently crowned as 

Host With the Most. She walked away 

with the grand prize of R10 000. Nontsi 

competed against fellow contestants 

Vusi Ndlovu from Glenanda, Jana Rau 

from Alberton and Makho Manyoni 

from Soweto. 

This sparkling lady clearly has a natural 

born talent, as the first things she 

tells me is, “This was my first dinner 

party ever! When I entered I didn’t even 

dream that I would win! I just entered 

because I am a huge fan of the show.” 

After entering she didn’t think BBC 

would call, but they did, and much 

excitement followed. 

Nontsi is an attorney by profession. She 

grew up in Soweto and later moved 

to Suideroord with her family. She 

completed her matric at Mondeor High 

and from there went on to study law at 

the University of the Witwatersrand. She 

completed her articles in Pretoria and 

Mondeor and now runs her own law 

firm. She certainly is driven, has lots of 

passion and comes across as fearless to 

achieve the things she sets her mind to. 

“I adore cooking and trying new things, my 

interest in Come Dine With Me stems from 

adoring food.” Nontsi’s menu was a reflection 

of the food that she loves, giving her 

guests an experience and a taste of what 

she really likes. She welcomed her guests 

with an exquisite bottle of pink bubbly 

and her starters were paired with a fruity 

Sauvignon Blanc and her mains with a 

soft Merlot. 

Daringly, Nontsi made the duck for the first 

time on the day of the show, and she was 

delighted with the result. The Cauliflower 

steak was also a first, but she did put some 

practise into the dessert, this she served 

floating out of the kitchen on a hover 

board. “I’m quite good on the hover board, 

but I was pretty stressed about dropping 

the dessert!” 

Her guests were impressed, not just by the 

dessert, but by this attention-grabbing 

piece of entertainment. 

Her theme and dress code for the evening 

was A Touch of Gold, she used her grandmother’s 

set of gold cutlery and decorated 

the table to suit her theme. “I really 

enjoyed the décor side of it and absolutely 

loved doing the flower arrangements! I’ve 

had a lot of people asking me to cook 

for them, but I want to go and decorate 

as well!” 

Her advice to future contestants, “Practise, 

think out of the box, look at what 

you’ve never seen on the show before 

and just be yourself!” 

Nontsi shared a lot about herself to her 

guests, her journey and the tribulations 

she has personally needed to overcome. 

“I have realised that you have to 

love yourself, and accept yourself for 

who you are. I don’t let negativity get 

to me.” 

“I was so surprised when I won and 

completely taken aback! I really 

thought Vusi was going to win, I knew 

the incredible effort he put into his 

meal. I enjoyed the entire experience, 

the fantastic camera crew and 

my fellow participants. We all got 

along, off and on camera. It was 

completely natural.” 

Nontsi would certainly do it again, and 

says that now she would really like to 

learn how to bake. “It was an opportunity 

of a lifetime and I am so grateful to 

have been part of it.”

Duck confit with pak choi 

Recipe serves - 4 

PREPERATION TIME - 1 HOUR 

AND 30MINS 

Ingredients: 

4 Duck leg portions • 1 Packet Pak Choi • 

1 Packet (microwavable) Baby Potatoes 

• 1 bottle Olive oil • 1 Packet Fresh Rosemary 

• 50g Crushed Garlic and Ginger • 1 

Packet 5 Spice • 1 Packet Paprika • 1 cup 

Flour • 2 eggs • 1 Packet Coarse Salt 

Method: 

Pre-Heat the oven to 180 degrees. 

Confit the Duck legs by salting them 

with as much coarse salt as possible and 

let rest for about five minutes. After 

five Minutes, remove all salt from the 

duck legs by dusting it off. 

Place the duck legs in an oven proof 

dish and evenly spice with 5 spice and 

Paprika (use own discretion.) 

Add the fresh rosemary and 2-3 tablespoons 

of the garlic. Lastly, add 3-4 

tablespoons of olive oil and massage 

the duck legs to evenly spice them. 

For the tempura style Pak Choi. Add a 

cup of flour into a bowl and add the 

2 eggs into a separate bowl. Take half 

of the Pak Choi and dip into the egg 

and cover with the flour. Place aside to 

deep fry before serving. 

Place the duck legs into the oven for 

20-25 minutes, remove from oven and 

drain the fat, and thereafter return to 

the oven for five minutes. 

While the duck cooks, deep fry the battered 

pak choi. 

Sauté the remaining pak choi in olive 

oil before serving. Simultaneously 

place the herb potatoes in the microwave 

for 8-10 min. Serve the duck 

immediately after removing from the 

oven and enjoy!

We’re planting… Petunia ‘Lightning 

Sky’ the latest in novelty petunias 

that is very hard to ignore. The speckled 

and starred yellow and red-velvet petals 

sparkle like a firework display. Each bloom 

is different, and the cooler days and nights 

bring out the markings. 

Like the other novelty petunias, the flowers 

are single, with compact, neat growth 

that suits smaller gardens, and spill out of 

containers and hanging baskets. Plants 

can double-up as in indoor flower arrangement 

for a day or two before being 

planted outdoors. They like full winter sun, 

well-drained soil, regular watering and 

fertiliser once a month to ensure an endless

There’s nothing like the colder months to make your bed a cosy haven. Add loads of layers ... think throws 

in faux fur or velvet, blankets in flannel or knit or (oh ... winter bliss) the ever-popular Sherpa. You can add 

a quilt too ... no longer just for granny’s room, they’re making a huge comeback – and the reversible quilts 

with coordinating prints are fab – ring the changes, depending on your mood. Slipping between crisp cotton 

sheets is always wonderful, but if you really suffer from the cold, consider brushed cotton sheets – the fabric is 

brushed to create a nap that traps in air to hold in the heat, making them wonderfully soft and warm. Volpes,
