Book club
Love. Laughs. And a little drama!
Book club
Every year, Sarah writes a love-filled
birthday letter to Izzy, her now sevenyear-old
daughter. And when she falls
pregnant with her second child, she
promises Izzy that when the new baby
arrives, life will not change, only get
better. But then, when five months
pregnant, Sarah collapses and her
future, and that of her pregnancy, is in
the hands of her husband and sister,
who don’t agree about what treatment
options the doctors offer, and the
family fights begin. Sinead Moriarty’s
tales are always heart-warming (and
sometimes heartbreaking) ... Seven
Letters is both – and thoughtprovoking,
too. Penguin, R290
Also look out for...
When Lucy’s affair with her married
boss turns sour and she’s retrenched,
she moves to a quiet village where
no one knows her history. She’s the
incomer, as the locals call newbies,
until another arrives. Alice, also young
and single, moves into the house next
door. She’s a little strange and Lucy
doesn’t trust, or even like, her much.
Even less so when Alice suggests
starting a book club, her way of
getting in with Lucy’s friends. And
Lucy’s right not to trust her. Alice has
moved into the village for just one
reason. Revenge! Once you’ve started
CJ Cooper’s The Book Club, you won’t
put it down. Little Brown, R325
Good friends. True love. And all the signs of the zodiac. Those of you who enjoy
David Nicholls, Marian Keyes and Jojo Moyes are going to love Minnie Darke and
her brilliant, feel-good romantic comedy. In Star Crossed, Justine Carmichael
(Sagittarius, aspiring journo and sceptic), bumps into her teenage crush Nick
Jordan (Aquarius, struggling actor and true believer) by chance. Or is it? Could it be
written in the stars? She discovers Nick relies on the astrology column published
in the magazine where she works, and makes a few adjustments to the Aquarius
horoscope, thinking it may help her love life. After all, it’s just the stars. What could
possibly go wrong? Funny, romantic ... chick lit at its best. Penguin, R290
When new mother of twins Lauren is
woken in the middle of the night, she
hears unusual noises from the bed
alongside hers in the maternity ward.
In that half-awake, half-asleep state
new mums find themselves in, she
thinks there’s a new arrival in the ward
... another mother, apparently also
with a set of twins. Drifting in and out
of sleep she’s not sure what’s a dream
and what’s not, but she’s convinced
someone is trying to steal her children
and she locks herself and her babies in
the bathroom until the police arrive.
The next morning, DS Joanna Harper
picks up the list of overnight incidents
that have been reported and sees the
report of an attempted abduction, but
it’s been flagged as a false alarm. She’s
told there’s no case, but Harper feels
something’s not right, so she visits
the hospital anyway. She discovers no
one believes Lauren ... but Lauren, and
soon Harper, are convinced the twins
are in real danger. Little Darlings
by Melanie Golding is a haunting,
unputdownable read. Scary stuff!
Here’s to a marvellous July
Sticky wings recipe
When having friends or family over, you can’t
go wrong with presenting a platter full of wings
alongside a mouth-watering blue cheese dip!
The only way to get the chicken wings really
glossy and sticky is to re-glaze them a few times
while cooking. Keep on going (about 3-4 times)
until you get the desired result, then serve
hot or at room temperature with this zippy
Southern-style blue cheese dip and a glass of
Spier Signature Chenin Blanc.
For the hot sticky marinade:
(SERVES 4)
1/4 cup (60ml) tomato sauce (ketchup)
• 3/4 cup (180ml) smoky BBQ sauce • 15-30ml
(1-2 tablespoons) Sriracha sauce (or hot chilli
sauce) • 15ml (1 tablespoon) Worcestershire
sauce • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
(muscovado or demerara) • 5ml (1 teaspoon)
smoked paprika • 1/2 teaspoon salt • About 16
chicken wings, for covering in the marinade
For the dip:
100g blue cheese, crumbled • 1 cup thick sour
cream or crème fraiche • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
• 1-2 tablespoons milk • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
(or apple cider vinegar) •Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
Make the sticky marinade: In a medium size
mixing bowl, add all the ingredients for the
marinade (except the chicken) and mix together.
Pour over the chicken wings in a sealable
container and marinate for 30 to 60 minutes (or
longer – overnight).
Preheat the oven to 200 C. Line a roasting tray
with foil, then arrange the marinated wings in a
single layer. Roast for 30 minutes, then remove
from the oven and use a pastry brush to brush
with more marinade. Return to the oven, and
keep on brushing every 10 minutes until the
wings are very tender and the edges are dark,
glossy and sticky. Remove from the oven and
serve hot or at room temperature.
Make the dip while the chicken is roasting. Mix
all the ingredients in a food processor and until
smooth and thick (thin it with a little milk if its
too thick). Keep any leftovers refrigerated in a
covered glass jar.
We’ve kept a keen eye out for new wines, and have
just had a sighting of unbridled Survivor Wild Yeast
Chardonnay. This free spirited wine range, inspired
by the hardy indigenous Nguni cow, has released its
Wild Yeast Chardonnay 2018 after a complete sell-out
of previous vintages. Which, trust us, is good news
for adventurous Chardonnay lovers who prefer the
unpredictability and unbridled expression of naturally
fermented wines. The wine, fermented in new 500L
French oak barrels, is all oatmeal and lime leaping
from the glass followed by invigorating layers of citrus.
Lovely on cooler days, and exceptional with veal or
pork, creamy butternut or rich seafood dishes. It’s R175
from the cellar door, and you’ll find it at all good wine
outlets. Details: www.survivorwines.com, @survivorwines on
You go
GAL!
It’s time you got to know Peniel Morebodi Makena. Why? This local rising star is
setting off to Orlando and she may soon grace our screens if
chosen for an international television production.
he has her heart set on
one day becoming a
famous model. But an
opportunity in acting
might just change her
direction. Meyersdal’s
Peniel Morebodi
Makena’s acting career
has already kicked off
and she is geared to make South
Africa proud. Currently seen on
the web series, The Myth, Peniel
loves being on stage. Her big break
came when she was selected by
international casting director Kim
Myers and Tyler Perry’s independent
casting director, Rhavynn Drummers
at a Joburg audition. Soon she’ll be
packing her bags to go to Orlando,
Florida to audition in front of leading
casting directors, fashion houses
and producers in parts of America,
Europe and Asia. “It is a dream
come true.”
Other career highlights
“I was introduced to modelling at
the age of eight. My cousin Mpule
Kwelagobe was taking part in a
fashion show at a little restaurant
called Taj in Botswana and asked me
to go along with her.
The owners asked me if I would like
to be part of the show and I thought,
gee, this is it, this is what I want to do!
Acting on the other hand was not
something I had considered still
being so young and it was actually
my husband, Mokgoshi Makena
who said that I should give it go. I
joined Just You Model and Artist
Management and they have given
me opportunities I could never have
dreamt of.
They have contributed to my success
as an artist and I could not have done
it without them. I give everything
I do my all, and I think that’s what
makes me stand out.
Home is where the heart is
Growing up with a family who shared
her passion shaped her future.
“I was raised in Maunatlala- a village in
Central District of Botswana.
I am the second born of Cecilia and
Moshe Morebodi and have two
brothers (Shalom and Raah) and a sister
(Eliel). After school I went on to study
psychology.
I have mastered skills to be patient, listen
to understand and communicate in a
way that makes people feel comfortable.
Being a psychologist has contributed to
my success as an actress and model but
underneath all of this, in my heart I’d like
to think I can make a difference to the
youth at home in Botswana.
Fun facts
Hobbies…I love reading, cooking and baking.
Must-haves in your wardrobe…My heels, they are always the
centre of my outfits.
What is in your handbag?
Different lip glosses and lip balms. I’m obsessed with moisturising my lips
so I never go without lip care, my purse and passport.
A girl has to always be ready if she needs to cross the border.
What can you simply not live without?
God, my family, and my phone.
The beautiful family kitchen sold them straightaway, and it’s the heart of their home.
Family living
We take a peep inside a Meyersdal family home.
Many hours of fun and good times have been enjoyed in the bar area.
This family home in a gated estate in Meyersdal
can best be described as homely
but with a definite entertaining edge to it.
When we chatted with the owners, who
have two young children, they admitted
as much as they enjoy quiet family times
together, they also love entertaining
family and friends.
They moved into their five bedroom home
nine years ago and immediately fell in love
with it when they caught a glimpse
of the double volume kitchen and knew
this would be the heart of their home.
“We enjoy cooking and there’s nothing
better than good food shared with those
we love.”
The rest of the house was a clean canvas
so they could make it their own. Cladding
was added to modernise the open
fireplace, which will be well used over the
next few colder months and they turned a
cosy corner into a family library. “We all are
avid readers.”
As you enter their home, the entrance area
is warm and welcoming and this leads you
into one of the two lounges, decorated in
cream and red. “When we entertain we do
sit here and relax but the bar area often
wins us over, as it has a patio just off and
this overlooks the garden.”
The lower lounge, where the family watch
TV when time allows, is the cosiest of the
two. “We specifically wanted both lounges
to be child friendly though so when
we chose the couches they had be
super comfy.”
Dining in during the week the family eat
around the central island in the beautifully
designed kitchen and for more formal dinners
the dining room is used.
“We are an extremely busy family so one
thing we didn’t want was a huge garden.
The small lawn, garden beds and splash
pool are absolutely perfect for us and
with the patio and bar, entertaining is
made easy.”
A collection of special décor items are the focal part of the entrance area.
Comfy and stylish makes this lounge the perfect place to watch TV.
Red and cream were chosen for this lounge and different textiles, patterns and prints have been incorporated.
COME DINE
WITH
Nontsi
Her interest in cooking stems from enjoying and adoring good food. We spoke to the
talented young Nontsi Jiyane who recently won in the fifth season of
Come Dine With Me South Africa
Photo credit: BBC Studios Come Dine With Me South Africa
Nontsikelelo (Nontsi) Jiyane, a resident
of Suideroord was recently crowned as
Host With the Most. She walked away
with the grand prize of R10 000. Nontsi
competed against fellow contestants
Vusi Ndlovu from Glenanda, Jana Rau
from Alberton and Makho Manyoni
from Soweto.
This sparkling lady clearly has a natural
born talent, as the first things she
tells me is, “This was my first dinner
party ever! When I entered I didn’t even
dream that I would win! I just entered
because I am a huge fan of the show.”
After entering she didn’t think BBC
would call, but they did, and much
excitement followed.
Nontsi is an attorney by profession. She
grew up in Soweto and later moved
to Suideroord with her family. She
completed her matric at Mondeor High
and from there went on to study law at
the University of the Witwatersrand. She
completed her articles in Pretoria and
Mondeor and now runs her own law
firm. She certainly is driven, has lots of
passion and comes across as fearless to
achieve the things she sets her mind to.
“I adore cooking and trying new things, my
interest in Come Dine With Me stems from
adoring food.” Nontsi’s menu was a reflection
of the food that she loves, giving her
guests an experience and a taste of what
she really likes. She welcomed her guests
with an exquisite bottle of pink bubbly
and her starters were paired with a fruity
Sauvignon Blanc and her mains with a
soft Merlot.
Daringly, Nontsi made the duck for the first
time on the day of the show, and she was
delighted with the result. The Cauliflower
steak was also a first, but she did put some
practise into the dessert, this she served
floating out of the kitchen on a hover
board. “I’m quite good on the hover board,
but I was pretty stressed about dropping
the dessert!”
Her guests were impressed, not just by the
dessert, but by this attention-grabbing
piece of entertainment.
Her theme and dress code for the evening
was A Touch of Gold, she used her grandmother’s
set of gold cutlery and decorated
the table to suit her theme. “I really
enjoyed the décor side of it and absolutely
loved doing the flower arrangements! I’ve
had a lot of people asking me to cook
for them, but I want to go and decorate
as well!”
Her advice to future contestants, “Practise,
think out of the box, look at what
you’ve never seen on the show before
and just be yourself!”
Nontsi shared a lot about herself to her
guests, her journey and the tribulations
she has personally needed to overcome.
“I have realised that you have to
love yourself, and accept yourself for
who you are. I don’t let negativity get
to me.”
“I was so surprised when I won and
completely taken aback! I really
thought Vusi was going to win, I knew
the incredible effort he put into his
meal. I enjoyed the entire experience,
the fantastic camera crew and
my fellow participants. We all got
along, off and on camera. It was
completely natural.”
Nontsi would certainly do it again, and
says that now she would really like to
learn how to bake. “It was an opportunity
of a lifetime and I am so grateful to
have been part of it.”
Flour • 2 eggs • 1 Packet Coarse Salt
Method:
Pre-Heat the oven to 180 degrees.
Confit the Duck legs by salting them
with as much coarse salt as possible and
let rest for about five minutes. After
five Minutes, remove all salt from the
Paprika (use own discretion.)
Add the fresh rosemary and 2-3 tablespoons
of the garlic. Lastly, add 3-4
tablespoons of olive oil and massage
the duck legs to evenly spice them.
For the tempura style Pak Choi. Add a
cup of flour into a bowl and add the
2 eggs into a separate bowl. Take half
of the Pak Choi and dip into the egg
and cover with the flour. Place aside to
deep fry before serving.
Place the duck legs into the oven for
20-25 minutes, remove from oven and
drain the fat, and thereafter return to
the oven for five minutes.
While the duck cooks, deep fry the battered
pak choi.
oil before serving. Simultaneously
place the herb potatoes in the microwave
for 8-10 min. Serve the duck
Timeless Classics
Give your garden a seasonal feel with these smart tips.
We’re planting… Petunia ‘Lightning
Sky’ the latest in novelty petunias
that is very hard to ignore. The speckled
and starred yellow and red-velvet petals
sparkle like a firework display. Each bloom
is different, and the cooler days and nights
bring out the markings.
Like the other novelty petunias, the flowers
are single, with compact, neat growth
that suits smaller gardens, and spill out of
containers and hanging baskets. Plants
can double-up as in indoor flower arrangement
for a day or two before being
planted outdoors. They like full winter sun,
well-drained soil, regular watering and
fertiliser once a month to ensure an endless
supply of flowers. The other showy
petunias in the novelty range are the blue
shaded ‘Night Sky’, and ‘Ink Splash’ with
‘Baby Doll’ being pink and white.
July meetings for Johannesburg South Garden Club
Both the July meetings will be held in The Geelhout Room, Klipriviersberg Recreation
Perfect for
the Patio…
Lavender ‘Avignon Early
Blue’ is small and bushy
with deep blue blooms
and the strong fragrance
of English lavender.
Keep flowering plants in
a warm, sheltered spot on
the patio during winter and
it will continue flowering
into spring. Use the edible
flowers in cooking or baking, and
to flavour sugar. Cut off the dead
blooms to encourage new flowers.
In summer it can be planted out into
the garden or into outdoor containers.
It is suitable for our hot, dry summers,
being able
to tolerate heat better than
stoechas varieties.
A GAME DRIVE
through the pages
A leisurely read through this new
coffee table book is (almost) as good
as being on an actual game drive.
What’s more, you’re guaranteed to
experience The Big Seven.
‘We ran on wobbly legs back to our vehicle about 100 metres
away ... we collapsed into our seats laughing and giddy with
the after-effects of the adrenalin rush that being charged by
the biggest predator in Africa brings on’.
Gerald Hinde and Will Taylor are both hugely experienced
in big African game ... spending more than three decades
photographing and working with the five that have always
been considered the hunters’ most dangerous wild animals.
But the pair felt that two more special species deserved
to be included on the list, two animals that visitors to our
big reserves are keen on seeking out. Welcome wild dog
and cheetah ... these two extraordinary animals, along with
the original lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard, are
featured in this astonishingly beautiful, recently released
book, The Big Seven.
Shot over more than 15 years, the photos are, as expected, sublime. But this is
more than just a photo-filled coffee table book. Will, who started off as a ranger
at Mala Mala, has written about their experiences in the bush ... and it makes for
an intimate, evocative read. So there’s the tale of the lioness charge when he
and Gerald were a little too close to her cubs for comfort. He tells us about an
enormous group of elephant ... ‘water splashed, trunks gurgled and there was
a high level of excitement as this huge gathering of 300 or more of the world’s
largest animal saw out the spectacular end to an African day’. He writes about them
filming a cheetah chase ... ‘amazed at how we could hear the paddle-shaped tail of
the cheetah cracking like a whip as it jinked by our vehicle at top speed in pursuit
of a steenbok’. He talks of hanging on for dear life while a chase is on, attempting
to stop expensive camera equipment from crashing onto the floor, of being chased
at high speed by black rhino, of the privilege of being around young leopard cubs,
and of slowly following a pack of wild dogs home in the sunset. With truly glorious
photos to study and fascinating facts about these animals, this book is an absolute
joy to those of us who love and appreciate our wild animals and the South African
big game areas. HPH Publishing. Available from hphpublishing.co.za, R650.
WORK or PLAY
These two destinations offer the best of both worlds
The de Charmoy Estate is close to King Shaka International Airport, making it ideally
situated for travellers, but is a fabulous family destination too.
Tucked away just 15 minutes inland from
Umhlanga and Ballito, the enchanting
family-owned de Charmoy Estate
offers the perfect mini-getaway spot to
unwind and enjoy some quiet time and
soul food.
The estate’s lush gardens, wide-open
spaces and island-inspired architectural
designs will have you thinking you’ve
travelled for miles to reach this
destination despite its being right on
your doorstep and perfectly positioned
for locals as well as travellers (just a
five-minute drive from King Shaka
International Airport).
One of the main highlights has to
be the estate’s on-site restaurant and
coffee shop, The Chocolate Garden. It’s
a magical, chocolate-inspired garden
that features chocolate-coloured plants,
chocolate-scented flowers, chocolate
mint and chocolate sunflowers and
vines. The coffee garden and restaurant
has a fully stocked bar and a menu that
caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner
(and includes chocolate versions of
tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, herbs and
the like). The focus is on freshness and
the combination of chocolate and
botanicals. It’s very child-friendly, with
roaming giant tortoises and a secure
play area.
When it comes to the accommodation
side of things, the estate has 16
beautifully appointed, four-star, airconditioned
rooms, surrounded by
tropical gardens. Each room has its own
entrance and unique character and you
can choose from the honeymoon suite,
family rooms or cosier king or queen
rooms. If you prefer self-catering, the de
Charmoy Estate also offers two selfcatering
units with a kitchenette.
The on-site spa is a great place for
guests to unwind and relax in an
intimate setting, surrounded by lush
gardens. This Sugar & Spice Spa has
two quiet treatment rooms as well as
a spa bath and sauna facilities and has
been designed to promote relaxation,
rejuvenation and wellness.
This home-away-from-home destination
truly allows you to relax in a tranquil,
tropical atmosphere and enjoy excellent
service. There are several swimming
pools and it’s easy to find a secluded
spot in the garden, watch the birds and
reconnect with nature.
Get away to the Valley … an incredible destination where you can escape the city for
the weekend (or hold your next work do in the world-class new conference centre)
Set in a ‘valley of plenty’ in a nature
reserve in the midst of a mountainous
area, Valley Lodge and Spa is
interlaced with rivers and streams
which nurture the indigenous
vegetation and the abundance of
animals and bird life. It really is the
ideal place to escape from the stress of
the big city … and an easy weekend
destination, as it’s just an hour’s or so
drive away.
The hotel sits prettily on the banks
of the Magalies River … all majestic
mountain backdrops and gorgeous
indigenous gardens. Arrive on a Friday
after work, slip off your shoes, order a
G&T and … breathe.
Plans for your weekend could include
going out and experiencing all the
area has to offer … think balloon safaris,
game drives, hikes in the hills and visits
to the nearby tourist spots such as the
Cradle of Humankind World Heritage
Site and the Sterkfontein Caves. And
good for you if you’re the exploring
type. Quite honestly, we’re a lazier lot,
and there’s just so much to experience
at the hotel that we don’t bother to
stray too far. We love to potter round
the gardens and, if feeling hugely
energetic, may pick up a tennis racquet
and have a game or two. There’s a pool
for a gentle dip or some strenuous laps,
a gym for those who can’t bear to go a
day without weights and then (and it’s
here we really come into our own) an
amazing spa. The hotel boasts it’s one
of the country’s finest, and we’re not
going to argue. It’s designed to provide
a health and wellness experience like
no other and is, trust us, a blissful spot
to spend a couple of hours.
Also amazing (and award-winning)
is the wine list and the fully stocked
cellar will satisfy even the fussiest wine
connoisseur. Meals range from English
pub evenings to dinner under the stars
… and everything in-between.
The rooms are described as ‘country
comfort with a dash of sophistication’
… they have their own sitting
rooms and private patios, and are
well equipped to give guests a few
hours, or days, of peace and quiet. A
book and a pot of tea on the patio
is a simple treat that shouldn’t be
undervalued!
We don’t usually chat about
conference facilities, but the newly
launched Steenkoppie Conference
Centre at the hotel is worth breaking
the rules … it’s got every possible
facility you could think of, and then
some. And let’s face it, if we have to
go to a conference, where better than
here, where the ambience is inspiring,
and during tea breaks you can watch
the dazzle of zebras strolling by.
It’s a rather special place, and talking
of specials … there are always loads
of them – the spa package and the
dinner-bed-and-breakfast special are
worth looking into.
Spoil
July
Fine bedding for
winter cocooning
OUR JULY SPOIL
Fancy a new set of linen or a warm
knitted throw? We’re giving a reader a
R1 000 Volpes voucher to spend
on linen of their choice. Simply visit
Facebook (Get It Joburg South), like our
VOLPES WIN post and you’ll be
in the draw. Comp ends July 23.
Good luck (and stay warm).
There’s nothing like the colder months to make your bed a cosy haven. Add loads of layers ... think throws
in faux fur or velvet, blankets in flannel or knit or (oh ... winter bliss) the ever-popular Sherpa. You can add
a quilt too ... no longer just for granny’s room, they’re making a huge comeback – and the reversible quilts
with coordinating prints are fab – ring the changes, depending on your mood. Slipping between crisp cotton
sheets is always wonderful, but if you really suffer from the cold, consider brushed cotton sheets – the fabric is
brushed to create a nap that traps in air to hold in the heat, making them wonderfully soft and warm. Volpes,
our local linen specialist, has an exceptional (and jolly well-priced) range ... well worth visiting before Jack
Frost arrives with a vengeance. Details: volpes.co.za
