Sunol, California deploys
drones to their mining plant
simply to gather
measurements of the massive
piles of sand and rocks sold
for construction. Allowing the
quadcopter to survey 90 acres
of land saves their workers lots
of time and money.
Surveying the entire site for
only 25 minutes yields them
lots more of data compared
to a full day of scanning the
area with a truck-mounted
laser. The drone, developed by
Kespry based in Silicon Valley,
has a nifty feature wherein it
can transform the data from
the survey into 3D maps. While
the drone does have an annual
subscription fee, the money
saved from hiring additional
workers to manually do the
survey is already worth its
services.
