Autonomous Vehicles Today
Although most of these
vehicles are still in the
planning stage, there are
already construction machines
that are in use these days.
Komatsu began developing
autonomous mining trucks in
2008 and released the world’s
first dozer with fully automatic
blade control semiautonomous
D61i-23 dozer in 2013.
Built Robotics created the
autonomous track loader (ATL)
in October 2017 which digs
and grades a large space
operated via an iPad. In the
same year, Volvo Construction
Equipment (Volvo CE) unveiled
the battery-electric HX2 load
carrier with vision capabilities
and the hybrid wheel hauler
called the LX1.
Meanwhile, Caterpillar
released more than 100
autonomous haul trucks that
can be remotely controlled
by an operator. Undoubtedly,
these machines have made a
massive difference in
construction sites. And the
industry is expecting to see
more of these in the coming
years.
