In the words of Engr. GerardoPancho, PHILCONSTRUCT2019 Event ChairmanThe first time I got involved inorganizing PHILCONSTRUCTwas when I was appointedchairman of its Technoforum,which is what we call theeducational program andseminars held alongside theexhibit. That was in 2008. I neverreally thought I would be giventhe chance to play an even biggerrole in the event in the future.In 2012, I was appointed theoverall event chairman. The firsttime was a big challenge alreadyin itself but back then, we onlyhad the SMX ConventionCenter to think about for theManila show. When I gotreappointed in 2018, the showhad already expanded into twicethe size as the 2012 edition. So atthis point, I’m thinking it wouldnot be enough to just fulfil thebasic duties of the chairman. Ipersonally challenged myself tostep up, try, and contributesomething a bit more.It was in 2018 when we startedelevating the lobby design ofthe show. We also launched ourown mobile app. We went reallyaggressive on strengthening thebrand and making it even moreattractive to exhibitors andvisitors. Seeing the response wegot from those initiatives hasbeen very fulfilling.As head of a constructionbusiness myself, I have afirst-hand account of thestruggles contractors face. One ofthose is not having access to new,cutting-edge technologies thatare already being used in othercountries. Our eventcommittee really made it one ofour priorities to showcase newtech from around the worldso that hopefully they will getpicked up by local distributorsand become more accessible toour fellow contractors.Luckily, we have friends fromaround the globe who share thesame goal with us, and we wereable to get the European Unionfor the first time to showcase newtech and solutions from theirtop manufacturers. We are alsoflying in speakers from the US,UK, and South Korea to sharetheir knowledge and best practiceadvise on a wide range of topics.This is on top of local expert-ledseminars that we regularly haveat PHILCONSTRUCT.For the first time, we also havethe Skills Olympics which will beheld at our much bigger outdoordisplay area. We will have rebartying, scaffolding, and paintingcompetitions and demos. Thatwill surely make for an excitingexperience for our attendees.For me, more than anything, thisis like giving back to the industrythat has served me so well. I have
