BRINGING HISTORY HOMENORMANDY HOUSEThe Baptist church in Barnes Lane was built in1816 following the Western Schism. This waswhen the curate of Milford, James Evans, leftthe Church of England and established theBaptist Church in Barnes Lane, taking a largeproportion of the congregation with him.At that time the land around the church wasmainly farmland apart from Sycamore Cottageon the south side.18682018Mrs Harriet Shaw was living there. Mrs Shawwas the widow of Ferdinand Albert Shaw, anIndigo planter who had retired to Carringtonsabout 1906. He was a founder and committeemember of Milford-on-Sea Historical RecordSociety in 1909. It was Mrs Shaw who made thefirst proposal for a "War Shrine" to be erected toacknowledge all those Milford men who servedin WW1. The suggestion was carried through,and the shrine was erected on the Bakehousewall in 1917.The 1928 Village directory revealed that MrsShaw had been joined at Harlington by one ofher sons, Harold Arthur, and his wife.Major H. A. Shaw MC had served in the regulararmy [Royal Garrison Artillery] between 1910and 1921. After leaving the army he became ateacher at various prep-schools until 1928. Hethen started a prep school in Harlington forarmy entrants, referred to locally as a crammer.During WW2 Major Shaw served in the RAF for 3years, following which he returned to prepschoolteaching Harlington having beenrequisitioned by the army.Harlington was bought by Colonel and MrsPaterson in April 1956.Following Colonel Paterson’s Death in 1979 SirJohn Curtiss bought the house and changed thename to Normandy House.John Curtiss served in the RAF as a Navigator,flying Meteors and Javelins, and in the 1950’swould bring his family to stay with his mother inLymington. He loved the area and bought hisfirst house in Hordle in 1974.By 1979 when he was the Commandant of theRAF Staff College in Bracknell the family movedto Normandy House.Having enjoyed the views of the Solent and theIsle of Wight from his mother’s house, he wouldtell his grandchildren that he could see theSolent from the attic windows in NormandyHouse which was really wishful thinking! Thehouse is currently owned by his daughter.Air Marshal Sir John Curtiss lived in Milford-on-Sea until his death in September 2013. Followinghis retirement from the RAF he was very activein the local community, especially withOakhaven Hospice and the British Legion.He had a very illustrious career and his story willbe told in more detail at Milford-on-SeaHistorical Society’s lecture, ‘More Voices ofMilford’, in November 2020.Ordnance Survey maps show that this was stillthe case in 1898; it wasn’t until the map of 1908that a house is shown next door to the Baptistchapel.This piece of land was part of the Whitby familyestates but was sold by Colonel Cornwallis-Westto W. E. Cove on the 8 th July 1903. The ReverendWilliam Earle Cove was the Baptist minister inMilford between 1901 and 1907, living at theManse in Barnes Lane, which was attached tothe chapel.By the time of the 1911 census Reverend Coveand his wife had moved to Mount Clear, nowNormandy House, and built on the plot adjacentto the Baptist church.
