The First Proclamation
..... At Gibeon the Lord appeared to
Solomon in a dream by night, and God
said, "Ask what I should give you." And
Solomon said, "You have shown great
and steadfast love to your servant my
father David, because he walked before
you in faithfulness, in righteousness,
and in uprightness of heart toward you;
and you have kept for him this great
and steadfast love, and have given him a
son to sit on his throne today. And now,
O Lord my God, you have made your
servant king in place of my father David,
although I am only a little child, I do
not know how to go out or come in. And
your servant is in the midst of the people
whom you have chosen, a great people,
so numerous they cannot be numbered
or counted. Give your servant therefore
an understanding mind to govern your
people, able to discern between good
and evil, for who can govern this your
great people?"
It pleased the Lord that Solomon
had asked this. God said to him, "Because
you have asked this, and have not
asked for yourself long life or riches, or
for the life of your enemies, but have
asked for yourself understanding to
discern what is right, I now do according
to your word. Indeed I give you a
wise and discerning mind; no one like
you has been before you and no one like
you shall arise after you.....
"Abba Father! Abba Mother!"
Prayerful Awareness
When we reflect on the first reading
today, we come across young King Solomon
son of the great King David. He is
young but has accepted the burden and the
great responsibility of leadership. So he is
humbling himself before God. He knows
that the relationship that his father had
with God is the only reason he became a
great King.
So when God asked Solomon what
he wanted, his focus was not internal or
selfish, but external and selfless. He is not
asking for wealth or power; he is asking
for help, for him to lead his people on the
correct path. The young king is determined
to please God. So when God sees the real
intent of Solomon, He grants him his wish
of Wisdom.
In the Gospel Today, we see the divine
quality of communion with the people. He
is sensitive to the feelings of the disciples;
He notices that they are tired from the
mission, and asks them to take a rest.
“Come away by yourselves to a
deserted place and rest awhile."
But when he sees the crowds; his
heart was moved with pity for them, for
they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.”
Our sonship
We are called to be selfless. And to do
God's Will with the help of the Holy Spirit.
The role of a shepherd is attending to the
sheep's every need, sacrificing all luxuries.
As we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and
Savior, we too must follow in the footsteps
of the Good Shepard Himself, JESUS.
Prayer Starter
I was pushed hard, so that I was falling
but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my
strength and my might; he has become
my salvation.
