Kaikoura show promises fun for all ages<br />

Aday of fun is being lined up for<br />

the 107th annual Kaikoura A&P<br />

Show at the SouthBay<br />

RacecourseonSaturday,<br />

<strong>February</strong> 22.<br />

PresidentMatt Anderson says<br />

therewill be plentyoffun for all<br />

ages at the annualshow,from the<br />

Sturgeon’s sideshows and bouncy<br />

castles,toDonald Stuartand his<br />

duck herding, afarrier giving a<br />

horse­shoeing demonstration,<br />

iconic <strong>North</strong>Islandentertainer<br />

BillyBlack Woolman,and the<br />

orsecompetitions in the main<br />

rena.<br />

Entries for the horse classes<br />

re once again strong and tradeite<br />

applications have been flying<br />

Horsejudginginthe mainring<br />

ill be held in the morning, with<br />

ound­the­ringhunter and pony<br />

umping events heldafterthe<br />

randparade,followed by showumping<br />

andthe Kaikoura Leap<br />

ix challenge at around4pm to<br />

inish the day on ahigh.<br />

Thoroughbred classes have<br />

een added to the horse schedule<br />

his year.<br />

unday, with the Kaikoura Pony<br />

lub offering afull day’s<br />

rogramme from 9am to 3pm.<br />

eturning to give ademonstration<br />

f making horseshoes and the<br />

hoeing process, which proved<br />

opular with spectators last year.<br />

The dry conditions mean the<br />

ain shearing competition will<br />

ot be happening this year, but<br />

popular bike­poweredshearing<br />

competition, which has featured<br />

former Kaikoura mayor Winston<br />

Gray in recent years.<br />

‘‘I’ve trying to get new Mayor<br />

CraigMackletoenter, but he<br />

wasn’t keen,and I’m not sure if I<br />

can convince StuartSmith, our<br />

localMP, but we’re working on<br />

him,’’ Matt says<br />

The dog section willfeature<br />

workingdogs, terrier racingand<br />

dog agility.<br />

SecretaryLaura Page says the<br />

first200 people through the gate<br />

will receive an eventscatalogue,<br />

whichoutlines the day’s<br />

activities and has atreasure map<br />

for children to follow.<br />

Thereisalso the farmyard<br />

corner with pigs, chickens, goats<br />

and miniature ponies to keep<br />

children entertained.<br />

Abutchery and cooking<br />

demonstrationwillbeheld in the<br />

PGG Wrightson marqueetoshow<br />

how to get the best cuts from a<br />

cattle beast and how to cook<br />

thosecuts.<br />

The entry fee has beenkept at<br />

$5 for adults,with children<br />

under­12 free. Thereisnocost for<br />

car parking.<br />

‘‘We won’t be able to do that<br />

forever, but we certainly want to<br />

make it affordable for families,’’<br />

Matt says.<br />

As the showgets nearer, the<br />

show committee is planning<br />

workingbees next Thursday<br />

before the show and again on<br />

Sunday, the dayafter, from 10am<br />

both days. It is keentohear from<br />

any willing helpers.<br />
