Dan opts to update
his mayoral wheels
By DAVID HILL
His choice of wheels made him a
standout during the mayoral campaign
and now WaimakaririMayor Dan Gordon
hopes to reduce his impactonthe
environment.
Mr Gordon has tradedinhis van at
local dealer Rangiora Toyota for a2012
ToyotaPriushybrid.
Just like the van, dubbed the ‘‘Dan
mobile’’ by WaimakaririYouth Council
members, the car has beenkitted out in
yellowandblack wraparound vinyl
signwritingproduced by Horton Signs.
‘‘It’sagreat car to driveand having a
vehicle likethis reduces my carbon
footprint, which is important as Ibelieve
we shouldall do what we can to mitigate
and lower our contributions to climate
Alister Newey is the Rangiora Croquet
Club’s seniorsingles champion after
beating Frank Williams in amatch that
last morethan 1 1 ⁄2 hours.
More than20club memberswatched
the match, withWilliams taking the first
The match was back to allsquare after
the seventh hoop, and the remaining
hoopswere exchanged.After12hoops
both players had won six each, with the
match, whichisusually only 12 hoops,
goingtoanextrahoop to find the
champion. Newey took the match after
claiming the 13th hoop.
In singles, eachplayer uses two of the
set of four croquet balls. Although the
objective is to win hoops, players spend
most of their time trying to stop their
opponentdoing so.
the council’s commitmentonthe issue.
He sayscouncil staff are also preparing
aproposal to add some electric cars to
the council fleetasatrial.
It might be the ‘‘mayoral car’’,but Mr
Gordon says it is his own and not
supplied by the council.
The Priushas a1200kmrange between
electric and petrol energy, he says.
‘‘I wouldhave likedtohave gone for a
plugin electric. However the rangeatan
affordable level is around 140km.
‘‘To get one with ahigherrange was
between $50,000 and $75,000, whichwas
outside my personalbudget.’’
Mr Gordonadmits thereare drawbacks
to drivingabrandedcar.
‘‘I’ve had alot of goodcomments, but
you have to be careful in asignwritten
car. You’vegot attention on you all the
time because people knowwho is driving
it.’’
