easily,bringing with it thesatisfactionof<br />
knowing thatbabyisgetting agoodstart<br />
to life.<br />
Forothers,itisawretched,painful<br />
struggle that often endswith reaching<br />
for theformula andbottle.<br />
It’s for these newmumsthatthe<br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong>DistrictHealthBoardbacked<br />
Mother4Mother programme<br />
canofferinvaluable support, andit’s on<br />
its wayto<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong>, says Brona<br />
Youngman.<br />
She has already helped set up groups<br />
for newmothers in Hawarden and<br />
Waikari,along withhamper basketsthat<br />
containtreats for them and their<br />
newborns, and information about what’s<br />
available for under5s in the community.<br />
Now,she is atraineevolunteer for the<br />
Mother4Mother initiative.<br />
‘‘I struggled to breastfeed,but Iwas<br />
lucky enough tohaveafriend who was a<br />
nurse, whom Icould ask for help.<br />
‘‘Manynew mums don’t havethat backup,’’Bronasays.<br />
‘‘We discovered thatWaitahaPrimary<br />
Health,which runs the Mother4Mother<br />
volunteertraining coursesin<br />
Christchurch,was looking at settingone<br />
up in AmberleyorRolleston.<br />
‘‘Thethingis, even Amberleyisalong<br />
waytogofor someofour families, so we<br />
rangthe peersupport administrator,<br />
Janine Pinkham,and asked if therewas<br />
achance acoursecould be runin<br />
Waipara.She agreed.’’<br />

As aresult,eight mumsofall agesfrom<br />
the areaaremeeting at theGlenmark<br />
Pavilion every Friday until theend of<br />
March.<br />
There, theyare beingtrainedand<br />
resourced to offer advice and support to<br />
pregnantwomen and breastfeeding<br />
mothers.<br />
Like aStJohn’s certificate, that<br />
training is reviewedand updatedevery<br />
twoyears.<br />
Bronasaysthere is stillarealneedfor<br />
volunteers from Hanmer Springs,<br />
Culverdenand Waiau. If anyone is<br />
interested, theycan still contact Janine<br />
on (027) 5881007, and do acatchup<br />
sessionbeforejoiningthe restofthe<br />
group.<br />
‘‘Our volunteers don’t need to be young<br />
mothers; theycan be anyone, of anyage,<br />
whohas breastfed ababy andbelieves in<br />
the importance of doing so,’’Brona says.<br />
‘‘Theyjustneed the peopleskillstobe<br />
abuddytoabreastfeedingmum,over<br />
the phone, via text,orfacetoface.It’sa<br />
commitment, butaveryfulfillingone,<br />
and agreat waytoofferpractical help to<br />
yourcommunity.’’<br />
