Fed Farmers urge patience
Federated Farmers is urging the
EnvironmentSelectCommittee to ditch
the Resource Management Act
Amendment Billand wait for the related
concurrentprocesses on its work
programme to play out.
The bill preempts and jeopardises
the comprehensive reviewofthe
Resource Management Actbythe
specialist panel appointed by the
Government, FederatedFarmers’
environmentspokesman Chris Allen
told the committeethis week.
It put the cart before the horse on the
Essential Freshwater proposals, which
sought feedback from the publicon
some of the samematters as in the bill.
FederatedFarmers is concerned that
while the Governmentisconsultingon
these exactproposals as part of the
EssentialFreshwater discussiondocument
process, it is concurrently
drafting its answers into the bill —
before assessing and addressing
feedback and concernsraised in the
morethan 17,500submissions received.
He says thebill is at odds with its key
aimsofreducing complexity, increasing
certainty, restoring public participation
and improving the act’s processes.
Mr Allen says fasttracking freshwater
planning processes oftenbecame the
‘‘survival of the best resourced’’, with
smallercouncils left behind.
