Haemostasis• The normal haemostatic response to vascular damage depends ona closely linked interaction between:• the blood vessel wall, circulating platelets and blood coagulationfactors.• An efficient and rapid mechanism for stopping bleeding from sitesof blood vessel injury is clearly essential for survival.• Nevertheless, such a response needs to be tightly controlled toprevent extensive clots developing and to be able to break downsuch clots once damage is repaired.
The haemostatic system represents a delicate balance betweenprocoagulant and anticoagulant mechanisms allied to a process forfibrinolysis.The five major components involved are; platelets, coagulationfactors, coagulation inhibitors, fibrinolysis and blood vessels.
