example, given the choice between the nouns van and peanutbutter as the first element in a
compound in which the second element is the noun driver, clearly the features of van are more
compatible with driver than are the features of peanutbutter.
12 Note as well that such reversible compounds may have a ―subject‖ orientation as well as an
―complement‖ orientation, as seen for example in compounds like dog attack and attack dog.
