esponsable [PP pour [NP les surgelés]]
alliage [PP à [NP haute température]]
langage de l’auteur
This property clearly distinguishes these expressions from all compounds that have been
discussed so far and suggests that they have a syntactic origin. It also explains (i) why the value
of the Number feature can be distinct for the two Ns e.g. responsable:SG photos:PL, and (ii) why
the second member of these expressions can be an NP, as in (31b). Many such expressions
generally have both structures, the one with the preposition being the oldest one e.g. stylo à bille
/ stylo-bille ‗ballpoint-pen‘.
22.4.4. Identificational NNs
I borrow from Noailly (1990) the term identificational to name the last NN expressions we have
to examine. These are exemplified in (35).
(35) l’institution Opéra „institution Opera‟
la catégorie adjectif „adjective category‟
le facteur coût „factor cost‟
la filière bois „wood industrial sector‟
la fée électricité „fairy electricity‟
In contradistinction to those discussed in the preceeding sections, these expressions satisfy (28b)
although they also conform to (25a), as (36) shows:
(36) a Jean étudie la catégorie adjectif Jean étudie l’adjectif.
„Jean studied the category adjective‟ „Jean studied the adjective‟
