the basis <strong>of</strong> the categorial composition <strong>of</strong> the compound, but on the basis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

grammatical/semantic relation between the constituents. In other words, nonsynthetic NN<br />

compounds can be classed as subordinate if they display <strong>and</strong> argumental (or quasi-argumental)<br />

relationship (e.g., cookbook author). Only where a clear argumental relationship between the<br />

compound constituents is lacking, will compounds be classed as attributive.<br />

The data I discuss below come from a number <strong>of</strong> sources – published works on<br />

<strong>compounding</strong>, the MORBO corpus, <strong>and</strong> my own relatively casual scrutiny <strong>of</strong> the New York<br />

Times.<br />
