BASIC INFORMATION<br />
Alice Springs Hospital is a 189 bed teaching hospital<br />
affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia<br />
and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only<br />
major hospital covering a catchment area of over a<br />
million square km.<br />
There is strong focus on Indigenous and remote<br />
health as a result of such a dispersed population.<br />
Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal<br />
people both from town and remote communities and<br />
we see a wide range of infectious disease. Cultural,<br />
language and communication issues also impact on<br />
our work. Our medicine is complex, including good<br />
old-fashioned “hands-on” care of arguably one of<br />
the sickest populations in Australia. Local services<br />
are supplemented by visiting specialists and a small<br />
number of patients are transferred out for problems<br />
requiring high level tertiary services.<br />
The hospital has an active education programme<br />
supported by award winning medical educators<br />
operating from a new, state of the art teaching and<br />
training facility on the Alice Springs Hospital campus.<br />
Alice Springs Hospital is accredited for diploma and<br />
terms in specialist training by ACEM, ACRRM, ANZCA,<br />
CICM, RACGP, RACP (adults and paediatrics), RACS,<br />
RANZCOG, RACMA and RANZCP.<br />
Many of our junior doctors stay on for post-graduate<br />
training and there are 53 resident positions available.<br />
Some are streamed places into “Acute stream”<br />
(ED/ ICU/Anaesthetics), “Medical stream” (General<br />
Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Renal Medicine,<br />
Continued Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine),<br />
“Rural Generalist/General Practice” (O&G,<br />
Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine).<br />
Many senior staff here started as students, interns,<br />
RMOs or as registrars and chose to come back as<br />
specialists.<br />

Ranges, and is surrounded by spectacular gorges<br />

and bicycle tracks. There are many galleries, alfresco<br />
cafes, restaurants and bars, and all manner of sport<br />
and fitness clubs. It has a resident population of<br />
28,000 and a regional population of 45,000, with<br />
600,000 visitors per year.<br />
Alice Springs Hospital has an active clinical training<br />
program and provides excellent clinical training<br />
opportunities and experience relevant to rural<br />
generalist practice. The hospital also boasts an active<br />
social life.<br />
