To the graduating class of 2020! It is such an incredible achievement to have made it this far into your medical school journey. Years of medical school have finally culminated in you looking down the final home stretch of your degree. As the sun finally sets on this part of your journey, I hope you can reflect on the amazing time you’ve had in medical school. The life-long friends you’ve made along the way, the growth that you’ve achieved and the exciting potential that you can make meaningful and lasting change in society. However, beyond the life-long friends you’ve made this year, you belong to an even more important cohort, the graduating cohort of 2020. 2020, perhaps of all years, is a year that won’t be forgotten. It is a year that uniquely bonds each and every person in this cohort. A year that represented tough challenges that you and your peers have had to find the resilience, motivation and courage to push through. A year that has reminded all of us why we picked this profession and why we chose to pursue this dream. As you approach this final stretch and reflect on what your next step may be, we hope that AMSA has featured prominently. From day one, AMSA has had your back. Perhaps you attended one of our premier events, donated blood as part of Vampire Cup or raised your hand to write a policy, we hope that AMSA has enriched your medical student experience. Whilst the sun might set on your medical degree, it is not too long before you will need to determine what your next step is. No doubt you will have given plenty of thought and conducted plenty of research to navigate this new frontier. In what might seem like a time of darkness, we hope that this publication, our annual AMSA Internship Guide, will be a guiding light for the twilight of your degree as you prepare for a thrilling new life! Enclosed within are some insights into the nuances that make each hospital unique, so you can make the best decision for you. It also features information relevant to the internship application process, especially during the year of 2020 with disrupted and changing requirements and conditions for internship applications. As you ponder on the vast and infinite possibilities beyond graduation, do remember to keep in mind the Editor-in-Chief, Michele Fu, as well as the Publications and Design Subcommittee, here at AMSA. Thanks, must go to Michele and her team, as well as to all of the dedicated volunteers who have contributed to crafting this Internship Guide. The 2020 AMSA Internship Guide will be like no other. In the final stretch, I’d encourage you to stay involved and make the most of this twilight time. Take care of each other and make the most of being a medical student. What a year it has been so far.... and it’s only April! If I had known 2020 would play out like this, I probably would’ve chosen to climb into my trusty time machine and skip the whole year. Unfortunately, however, we haven’t quite gotten around to inventing said time machine and hence, many of us have no choice but to trudge along in the face of uncertainty. In saying that, I am in awe of the strength and courage of our front-line workers in this time of crisis, and I’m truly appreciative of their effort and sacrifice. These people are the heroes who inspire the rest of us to continue to work hard and to eventually impact our communities in a more meaningful way. For our final year medical student readers, I imagine many of you may be feeling quite stressed in such uncertain times. Whilst I may not be able to directly assist you, my National Publications Subcommittee and I have worked tirelessly over the past few months to put together this guide in the hope that it may answer your internship questions and provide some clarity during this challenging period. We sincerely hope you find this guide useful in your internship decision-making and application process. You have all worked extremely hard to get to where you are and I hope you are proud of how far you’ve come. From applying for medicine to attending that first day of medical school, and now becoming a fully fledged doctor... what a journey! I am sure that the people around you and those who have supported you through this journey are also immensely proud of you. I wish you the best of luck in commencing the newest chapter of your career. There are still many years to learn, grow and develop into the doctor you aspire to be!
