The Alfred will provide Junior Medical Staff with the<br />

clinical experience, mentoring, education, training and<br />

support necessary to enhance their chosen medical<br />

career. The hospital also has a reputation for Service,<br />

Training and Research.<br />

The Alfred has renowned statewide services - a Trauma<br />

Centre with helipad; Hyperbaric Medicine Service;<br />

Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit; Heart Lung Transplant<br />

Service; Adult Burns Service; and a HIV/ AIDS Service.<br />

Senior medical staff here are approachable and eager<br />

to assist. A formal mentoring program is also offered<br />

to JMOs and RMOs.<br />

ROTATIONS AVAILABLE<br />

<strong>Internship</strong>: 5 terms, 3 of which will be core Medical,<br />

Surgical and Emergency Medicine.<br />

Emergency Medicine and General Medicine<br />

(both available at Austin, Echuca and Mildura),<br />

Endocrinology/Rheumatology, Gastroenterology,<br />

Liver Transplant Unit, Psychiatry, Spinal, and Stroke/<br />

Neurology.<br />

For surgery, there are rotations in the following units:<br />

Breast, Colorectal, ENT, Hepatobiliary and Upper GI.<br />

BASIC INFORMATION<br />

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health<br />

services, health professional education and research<br />

in the North East of Melbourne. Austin Health is world<br />

renowned for its research and specialist work in many<br />

fields of medicine and provides statewide services in<br />

liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, respiratory<br />

support services, toxicology and paediatric mental<br />

health. We are also the centre for Veteran mental<br />

health services. Austin Health incorporates the Austin<br />

Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital (HRH)<br />

and the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre (RTRC)<br />

and is affiliated with eight universities, specifically<br />

the University of Melbourne Medical School for<br />

undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.<br />

REASONS TO APPLY<br />

Austin Health is recognised for its excellence in<br />

clinical education and teaching. It provides dedicated<br />

training time each week to interns through the Clinical<br />

Education Unit. The new Austin Tower possesses<br />

new HMO quarters, an extensive education precinct,<br />

and modern wards and facilities.<br />

A clinical skills lab is also situated on Austin Hospital<br />

site, which provides hands-on training and simulated<br />

activities for all members of the health care team.<br />

The introduction of a new clinical information system<br />

at Austin with automated electronic inpatient and<br />

specialist clinic prescribing, drug administration,<br />

radiology, and pathology test ordering also eases<br />

patient management.<br />
